It’s not necessarily your fault,

ladies — you probably didn’t

do anything wrong. There are

just certain triggers (genuine

disinterest aside) you might

not be aware of. Things that tilt

that really–delicate scale to the

side of Not Calling. And it is a

delicate scale, because I think

the majority of the time, unless

the person is really unbearable,

or the chemistry utterly fl at,

the decision to continue dating

comes down to the really small

subconscious–level things. The

things that on their own might

seem petty, but when extrapo-

lated over the timeline of a

potential relationship, suddenly

look very scary.

You know the kind of thing I’m talk-ing about if you’ve ever had a guy tell you his mother says hi...on date three.

Here are the top 5 reasons guys stop calling:

The dating world is made up of peo-ple looking for serious and people who aren’t, and you have to be hon-est about which you are! If you’re all “I totally just want something casual” but that’s not exactly true, it’s going to manifest itself in weird ways, and he’ll st op calling because that’s not fair to either of you.

Everyone likes a little jealousy, right? But if it’s date two and a girl’s teasing any reference I make to other women in my life (“Just roommates, huh? Joking!”) a red fl ag pops up. If she suggestively asks about a girl I know because she saw a picture of the girl and me together, and said picture was discov-ered because she was on my facebook? We’re not making it to date three.

  The jealous /stalker vibe.

34 5

I know, it’s trite, it’s straight out of an Anis-ton fl ick, but that doesn’t make it untrue. Guys instinctually need mating friction, so if you’re always available and ready to see him, if you’re nodding agreeably at everything he says, indulging him at every laugh line, hap-pily letting his bedroom preferences trump yours — then what the hell is interesting about you?

2

There was no chase.

You’ve been social network attacking him.

You never paid.

Unless you’re going for hedge fund guys, you have to pay sometimes! On the fi rst date/meal/round, the obligatory purse reach is great, but odds are he’s not going to actu-ally let you pay, right? So when the second date comes around, don’t ask to pay, tell him you’re going to pay. It’s not an insignifi cant gesture; it says you’re ready to han-dle your half of whatever relationship emerges from those fi rst few dates.

Sometimes after a few dates you really like someone and it maybe kinda sorta starts to border on infatuation. (Es-pecially when you have a lazy Sunday afternoon and your thoughts drift, am I right ladies?) Don’t let this seep out by adding him on face-

book, following him on twitter, and commenting on his blog that you had no idea he used to live in Barcelona. One of these is fi ne! Showing interest is great! Just not an ava-lanche of it, ok? Cause you may as well have told him your Mom says hi. Ω

Blake Lively is starving. She slides into a booth at a charm-ing restaurant in New York City’s West Village and im-

mediately buries her head in the menu. “Let’s share a bunch of stuff,” she says, then adds, “On average, I order about three meals for myself in one sitting.” She isn’t kidding. Two bread baskets, two appetizers, two pasta entrées, and three desserts later, she decides that’s enough food…to start with.

But there’s good reason for Blake’s rav-enous appetite. As one of the breakout stars of television’s most buzzed-about show, Gossip Girl, she’s spent the last several months working 18-hour days. And that’s in addition to promoting her new flick, The Sisterhood of the Trave-ling Pants 2, in which she plays a col-lege student coming to terms with her mother’s death. Though she looks every bit the chosen Hollywood starlet (she’s dressed in skinny jeans, black ballet flats, and a leather bomber jacket), she hardly acts it. “I don’t drink. I don’t do drugs. But I do sleep around a lot,” she deadpans, before busting into laughter.

The fact is, her own high school experi-ence in Burbank, California, was a far cry from her character’s ultraprivileged existence. While Serena van der Wood-sen spends her time sipping cham-pagne at the Palace Hot e l dressed in designer clothes, Blake, now 21, was more of a gung-ho overachiever. “ I was class president, on the cheerleading squad, in a competitive show choir, and

in, like, six different clubs,” she says. She’s even sported a bulldog costume to act as mascot for some football games . That up-for-anything attitude is what helped her break into acting. She got her first gig (in the original Sisterhood movie) because her brother, also an actor, thought she would like performing and asked his agent to send her on a couple auditions.

She steers the conversation back to her alter ego and finds it important to distinguish her world from the drama-filled one her character inhabits. “There wasn’t a period in my life like Ser-ena went through, where I was doing drugs and having sex with my best friend’s boyfriend. I never went through that kind of crazy,” says Blake, who describes herself as a “weird combina-tion” of really outgoing and really shy.

Instead, she’s famous among her group of friends for being a prankster who breaks into impromptu “Riverdances” and belts out show tunes in the wrong key. “People think I’m goofy,” she says. “I don’t have that whole Angelina Jolie air to me. I wish that I did, and that’s an insecurity of mine. Some days, I wake up, and I’m like ‘Oh, I look good to day!’ And some days, I wake up and feel like I look like a tranny.”

More like a statuesque 5-foot-10 blond bombshell. No doubt Blake’s gorgeous

looks have made her something to talk—and blog— about. As she dives in to her ravioli, two women

Thanks to a starring role on the addictive Gossip Girl, a new movie, and a high-profile romance, she’s Hollywood’s proverbial It Girl. One more thing: You know you love her.

walking by the table do a double-take when they notice her. (You can practi-cally hear them gasping “OMG!”) And on a typical day, the Gossip Girl set is surrounded by 60 to 80 scoop-hungry paparazzi. “Their cameras will be click-ing during scenes while we’re just trying to get through our lines. It sounds like a swarm of wasps,” she says.

Blake has also already gotten a taste of what it’s like to be thrust into the celebrity rumor mill, thanks to tabloid speculation that she’s frenemies with her costar Leighton Meester, who plays Blair Waldorf on the show. Counters Blake: “It’s absurd. We get along so well.”And the gum-flapping doesn’t stop there. Long before they were photographed

frolicking together on vacation in Mexi-co, Blake and her onscreen boyfriend , Penn Badgley (who plays Dan Hum-phrey), were linked romantically.

Without mentioning his name, she says, “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been now. When I’m in a relationship, I give my heart an d soul to it and do it 100 per-cent.” Turns out, she has some pretty specific requirements for the man in her life: “If a guy can play Guitar Hero with me and sit at home and watch the Food Network and read magazines with me, that’s good. I don’t think there are many guys that’s fun for. It’s a lot to ask.” As far as Penn goes, she only cops to turn-ing to him for advice on-set from time to time. “He’s very stoic and calm and confident. He’s much more like Serena than I am.”

On the topic of love, Blake does admit to one thing: her lack of experience. “I’ve kissed just three people in

my life, other than stuff that I’ve done for TV or movies. I know—I’m weird! I hope Brad Pitt doesn’t hear this. He’s never going to want to marry me!” she says, giggling.

“But seriously, I haven’t been in many relationships. I don’t want to date someone just to date someone. I want to be with a guy who’s going to better my quality of life and better me.” At that point, the waiter comes over to set down the aforementioned array of cake and pastries. Blake pauses with her spoon in midair, looking bemused, and says, “Actually, you know what? A guy’s also perfect if he doesn’t try to eat my des-sert.” Ω

A sleek blowout is the best way to do justice to a great cut like Anne Hathaway’s. Apply a few drops of shine serum to wet hair, then blow-dry with a round brush, section by section. Do a side part, then tuck a chunk of hair in the front behind your ear. Done!

If you squint, Gwen Stefani is a dead ringer for Brigitte Bardot in this picture, thanks to a strategically placed hair bump (the nude lips help too). If you don’t have a Bumpit handy, make a side or center part,

tease your crown, then spritz it with hairspray. Pull back both sides around the teased section and pin into place.

Got texture? Flaunt it! Weren’t born with it? Fake it! For pretty waves like Beyonce’s, apply a bit of leave-in con-ditioner to damp hair, make braids all over your head, then go to bed. Undo the braids in the morning and separate them with your fi n-gers. Silently thank glamour.com for an amazing hair day.

Add a bump to your hair.

Show off your layered haircut.

Put away your fl atiron for a day.

7No, this isn’t a dancer with the New York City Ballet—it’s January Jones! For her daring bun, make a ponytail way up on top of your head, then braid it. Wrap the braid around the base of the pony and secure with bobby pins. Pirouettes are optional.

size amount of smoothing cream to wet hair, then blow-dry as

What to do now that we’ve offi cially retired the low-rider head-band look? Take a cue from Scarlett Johans-son and go with a thin headband in basic black. Tease the front of your hair fi rst for volume and to give the band something to grab onto.

Don’t be afraid of the way-high bun.
