was about information...
The wireless-communications revolution
is about making digital information about
anything available anywhere.”

- Among M2M applications already installed in the field the biggest part is
communicating through 2G/2,5G network.
- Most of M2M applications were not demanding in bandwith to exchange
data. GSM data, DTMF, and SMS were the most common used
technologies. Then GPRS offered new opportunities to M2M applications
to propose different features (TCP/IP, FTP…) and services.
- Even if we see an increase in the amount of data exchanged in M2M,
2G/2,5G network is enough in most of cases to fulfill the requirements of
M2M players.
- 3G and beyond brought capabilities for specific features and applications:
streaming, video surveillance…

Strategy of network providers
- For couple of years, network providers have been promoting 3G. They
have invested a lot to get a 3G licences and to build 3G networks.
- Provider’s « mid-term » goal is to offer 3G exclusively to their customers.
- Mobile phone manufacturers have already been prepared to this migration:
Most of new devices on the market are compatible with 3G.
- As they used to do, M2M players have to follow this trend.
- Telit works closely with providers and suppliers to ease the migration from
2G to 3G to customers thanks to the Unified Form Factor and the Unified
