HDTV

Benefits of the Digital modulation: Flexibility

All HD programs in France are MPEG-44 free-to-air and 1 pay channel

Page 7: migration from Analogue to Digital Standard

7

Benefits of the Digital modulation: new services

Content : International, National and/or Local content.

National and/or Commercial Broadcasters

SDTV, EDTV, HDTV, INTERNET Access, DATA

BROADCASTING (MPEG2 and/or MPEG4)

Multiplex allocation

Fixed, portable and/or mobile reception

Pay TV, impulse Pay Per View, free services

Type of electronic program guide (EPG) and access control

management system (CA) …. (non exhaustive)

Decision to make in terms of new services types

The fundamental approach: to start from services in order to define the structure of the network and to prepare the national audiovisual law

Page 8: migration from Analogue to Digital Standard

8

Free to air (Basic bouquet ) Commercial/Thematic programs : subscription Impulse Pay per view : sport events, … NVOD, Home Shopping (purchasing via STB), E commerce

National annual TV fee, Set top box :

• Free of charge• Sold• Rented• Leased

Value Added Services economic model to be determined

Benefits of the Digital modulation: value added services

The dominant model in Europe is a free to air platform with some pay elements in MPEG-4

Page 9: migration from Analogue to Digital Standard

9

Advantages for the content providers

Opportunity to develop innovative content

Can converge with Telecom operators to offer mobile services

Infrastructure delivers data therefore encourages development and expansion of data services: new business model

New added value services can be added Associated data groups for accessibility, control, monitoring and Quality of

Services

system and service data (e.g. EPG, diagnostics, automation..)

Digital modulation benefits for Broadcasters

Page 10: migration from Analogue to Digital Standard

10

Advantages for Manufacturers

Analogue TV is old – room for innovation (market differentiation) is limited

Digital TV involves new set-top-box reception equipment, and potentially for higher quality displays (e.g. HDTV) => innovation

Consumer devices such as PVR, home networking require digital services

Head-end vendors can provide more flexibility, systems than previously

Convergence provides interest challenges for manufacturers

Digital modulation benefits for Manufacturers

Page 11: migration from Analogue to Digital Standard

11

Advantages for Governments

Digital dividend thanks to the spectrum frequency. New network planning issues has to be

considered after the analogue TV switch off.

Promote competition as more actors can enter into the market

Digital requires less RF power so this leads to energy’s cost savings and cost of ownership gain.

SFN mean you could have one RF frequency occupancy by multiplexed TV programs over the

countrywide.

Extension of the nationwide coverage: diversity and access to a wider range of population

Gives prominence to the public service broadcasters

Improves enforcement of regulation of broadcasting content

Stimulates content providers

Digital modulation benefits for Governments

Page 12: migration from Analogue to Digital Standard

12

Advantages for Consumers

Access to new services means increased choice and new system

information

Better choice or higher quality programs possible

Digital also means access to whole range of new consumer

products like PVR, flat screens...

Digital modulation benefits Consumers
