In 2008 after graduating from Loughborough University with a Masters degree in Systems Engineering I began graduate employment at Airbus as a wing structures designer. I developed skil ls in aeronautical engineering, structural design, CAD, materials science and manufacturing processes. In 2011 I star ted Dance-Off Productions, an events company that creates interactive indoor and outdoor spaces for mass-audience par ticipation, music, dance and theatrical per formances. With my team, I have engineered, designed, fabricated, buil t and decorated projects for a range of clients across the UK. In 2013 I formed MEC Mechanical Engineering and began providing freelance CAD design services to Airbus under contract with a specialism in structural wing repairs and carbon-composite structures design. In 2014 I became a Char tered Engineer, accredited by the UK Engineering Council and the Insti tute of Engineering and Technology. In 2015 I joined Architek Design as lead design engineer. In this role I am responsible for producing design drawings and models for structures and products ranging from furniture to architectural and ar tist ic instal lations.

With my colleagues at Architek Design Ltd. – a new design and fabrication enti ty based in Bristol – I designed and fabricated fi t ted and freestanding furniture under commission for a new social space buil t for the University of Bristol. My main contributions to this project were the production of CAD models and drawings of the elements being manufactured, and fabricating a series of booth seats on site. The design of the booth seats uti l ised CNC mil l ing services provided by local supplier. I was also responsible for the health and safety aspects, budget control, contract negotiation and overall project management on this task.

The feature table formed a central focus for the room and was designed to be an attractive social space for gathering, working and eating together. The timber elements were designed in CAD and crafted by hand using 1:1 scale drawings. The pillars were accurately positioned and anchored to the ground using templates produced from the CAD models for a flawless install.

Page 8: Mike Chatziapostolou Portfolio

The booth seating design task presented a challenging opportunity to utilise the speed and accuracy of CNC milling technology to quickly produce large and comfortable seating areas.

CAFE | BAR PLAN A01

I completed and drew up an accurate building survey in AutoCAD. Using this I designed the venue layout to help visualise the project definition and aid communication with the client and key stakeholders.

Project Examples

Page 12: Mike Chatziapostolou Portfolio

Working with a team of alpine event specialists, I was tasked with producing an accurate 3D model of the 'Tignespace' event space from architectural drawings and photographs. Once the building shell had been created, I populated the empty space with technical production, decor, traf fic management and point-of-sale elements. Working in the 3D digital realm, i t was quick and easy to model a range of layouts for comparison and down-selection by Okoru. Once a final design had been approved, I used the 3D model to create attractive 2D renders for use in Okoru's event management planning and printing in the event programme material.

Page 13: Mike Chatziapostolou Portfolio

For this project, I was commissioned to produce li fe- l ike renders of a conceptual shared workspace.

The task was driven by very tight t ime constraints, with close collaboration with the client throughout. My designs were used to successful ly secure the funding necessary to realise these spaces in 2016.

Page 14: Mike Chatziapostolou Portfolio
Page 15: Mike Chatziapostolou Portfolio

This house plan was drawn for a client to be used in a planning permission application and is a good example of the type of si te and architectural scale drawings I am able produced quickly and accurately in AutoCAD.

One of my regular clients wanted to update their health and safety documentation with accurate scale drawings of their stage structures and also wanted some basic renders produced for their website and sales publications. I modelled the stages in 3D using Solidworks and produced 2D technical drawings to suppor t their HSE compliance drive.

An outdoor stage design and build for a first- t ime client at a Central London location. Inspired by a giant children’s toy theme, I designed Robodude 9000 – a f lat-pack and reusable per formance space constructed using timber, aluminium tube and Kee Klamp® fit t ings. The design was completely specified in a digital 3D environment before being transferred to 2D drawings for fabrication.

An Airbus A380 suf fered an uncontained engine failure shor t ly after take-of f which caused extensive damage to the left hand wing. The aircraft landed safely, but the repair would take 18 months to define, manufacture and embody. I was responsible for developing the bottom skin and fixed leading edge repairs from concept through to manufacture and instal lation on the aircraft.

I wanted to create a strong, functional and authentic boxing ring using standard steel deck for use at Dance-Off per formances where the structure would be used to facil i tate dance batt les. The ring needed to be incredibly robust, easy to build and safe. After extensive research I could not find anything of f the shelf that met these requirements so decided to design this f lexible bracket and post system myself. The system fi ts al l common types of steel deck and can handle a platform of any size both indoors and outdoors.
