As you now know, the NewYear is upon us. In additionto having new classes andbooks to buy and resolutionsto uphold, 2003 also bringsPi Alpha Phi into our seventy-seventh year of existence.Seventy-seven years so farinto our journey to abrotherhood that willundoubtedly last forever. It isquite easy to say we willdefinitely be around forever, especially with the dedicationand integrity of our activebrothers and alumni. Pi AlphaPhi isn’t just a fraternity; PiAlpha Phi is a way of life.

What is it that keeps usgoing and going? Is itdedication? Is it commitmentto excellence? Or is it thecold hard truth that we areeasily recognized as the bestof the best? These are justsome of the reasons I couldcome up with; you may come

A Message from the President

up with your own. But whenI think about it long enough, only one reason really comesto mind; it’s the quality ofthe brotherhood. It’s thebrothers from your individualchapter, as well as yourbrothers from the otherchapters. It’s each and everysingle one of us, all the wayback to our six foundingfathers that started thismadness back in 1926, whocontribute to making ourbrotherhood what it is today.Pi Alpha Phi isn’t limited tothe school you attend. PiAlpha Phi isn’t limited to onlyyour pledge class. We are PiAlpha Phi. Simply put: WeAre Brotherhood.

As we start off 2003 on afresh note, I want all of youto realize that no matter howstrong we think we are, orhow well we think things aregoing. We can always

improve on perfection. Itwould be one thing if wewere second best trying tocatch the leader, but all ofyou know that it’s harder tomaintain the lead. We don’tonly want to keep the lead, but build on it as well. Beingthe best isn’t easy and wedidn’t become number oneovernight. The foundation fora great fraternity has beenlaid down before us and nowis the time to take control ofwhat we have today, so wecan make the future of PiAlpha Phi a better one forour younger siblings and ourfuture legacies and legends. It is an honor that I am thepresident of Pi Alpha Phitoday, but the greatest honorof all is that I am one of us:a brother of Pi Alpha Phi.

Cranes go under bridgewith inches to spare.

ΠΑΦ Alumnus successfully guides World’s LargestCranes under SF Bay Bridge

On May 4, 2002, four giant cargocranes were pulled successfullyunder the Golden Gate Bridge andBay Bridge – each time with just afew feet to spare – on their wayto their new home at the Port ofOakland.

On the bridge motorists sloweddown and people on land oohedand aahed beneath a pleasantsunny morning. Helicopters flewoverhead. A fireboat sprayedwater in salute as boats of allkinds lingered at a safe distance.Local television stations broke intomorning talk-show programs tocarry the spectacle live.

Engineers said the tightest fitcame about 10 am when thecranes – two of them reachinghas high as 22 story buildings –cleared the bottom of the Bay

Bridge by a margin of less than fourfeet.

“ I know our engineers calculatedthis down to the final inch,” DarleneAyers-Johnson, a member ofOakland’s Port Commission, said asshe watched a tugboat pull thecranes very close to the Bay Bridge.

“But my heart just jumped into mythroat.”

One of the engineers she spoke ofwas our own Berkeley Pi Alpha Phialumnus Yale Yee.

Speaking of Kamikaze, everyone knows it is thebest party that goes downin the bay area. Itoriginated in the back of ahouse in Davis, GammaChapter by alumnus, ChrisInami, who thought of theidea of throwing parties asan organization. We hadthe first Kamikaze a fewyears ago when we onlyhad three chapters,Berkeley, Davis, and SanJose. It started out as abi-annual event to helppromote Pi Alpha Phi in thebay area. Now, eventhough Kamikaze is only

thrown once a year, asKamikaze Chair I am tryingto bring back the original“our bi-annual party". Thefraternity has grown somuch throughout thesefew years, and that nowwe are 9 chapters strongand have expandedoutside of California,Kamikaze is still one of theparties that many peopletalk about, spreading ourname throughout theCalifornia. As kamikazechair, organizing this eventis not easy, but I know itwill be all worth the timewhen we pull “hella” heads

at the party and hear themtalk about how tight theparty is.

What is our fraternity’sname? Do we considerourselves a fraternity ordo we prefer to be calleda fruit? This is a seriousissue that we as afraternity should dealwith. I understand howsome people might feelthat the “pineapples”nickname distinguishes usfrom other Asianorganizations, but is thatreally the way to go? Dowe really want to considerourselves a fruit?

I only ask these questionsbecause it is somethingthat I have alwaysthought about when I waspledging. When I becamean active brother at UCDavis. I remember thetime we had a historylesson about thefraternity. We asked aboutour fraternity name. Oneof the Bro's told us howwe should consider we arepledging for one of thebest houses in the nation. Our fraternity’s name isPi Alpha Phi and weshould be proud to be in

it. When someone asked,“Could we also be calledPineapples?” thequestion was frownedupon. We all ponderedwhy it would be such abig deal, but our mindswere finally put to easewhen our instructor toldus:

"OUR FRATERNITY ISNOT A FRUIT".

This made a lot of sense, since why would anyonereally want to pledge fora fruity fraternity.

At first I didn't really thinkmuch about the lessonsince, we really never tieourselves with the fruitytitle, but as I visit peopledown South, I am askedwhat my fraternity’sname is, and I answerPAPhi, and people arebaffled. However, evenwhen I said the Greekletters, peoplewere still confused. Outof exasperation, I finallysaid Pineapples andeveryone understood.

This is the kind of talkthat I think our fraternitydoes not need. Yes, it’seasy for us to berecognized with such atitle, but is this whatwe really want forourselves?

I am not targeting anyspecific chapters. It's notany individual’s fault;sometimes we are hit withthese kinds of commentsup here in Nor Cal.However, I do think theassociation with a FRUITcan be avoided. We candefinitely change the waywe carry ourselves, and Ithink the best optionwould be doing somethingwith our pledge system. We need to beginteaching new pledges thatPineapples are not ournames. We need to makesure that our pledgesleave that sameimpression with peopleon campus or just withtheir friends. After all,we are Pi Alpha Phi, afraternity, not a fruityPineapple.
