All my life, beginning with the civil rights movement

of the 60s, I have fought for social and economic

justice and to strengthen and democratize unions.

I believe they are crucial to achieving economic

justice and the rights of working people—the 99%.

My message to you, the Richmond voter.

1. The educational system is failing our children and their teachers.

The quality of the schools helps define the quality of a city, and it is the teachers who make the schools. It will take the strength and connections of the City to support the teachers and the learning process in the classrooms. Our local schools should also become true community centers and all-day learning cen-ters for children and adults involving parents, grandparents, and retirees.

2. Job training programs — the path to jobs. The key to attracting good paying jobs to Richmond is to have a trained workforce ready. Good job training will enable Richmond residents to get the jobs that will come here. We can strengthen and link City programs, high schools, adult education, and the community colleges to provide the kind of training that will produce more jobs for Richmond residents.

3. Protect our communities. Richmond is a diverse city. Speculators and market forces are driving Richmond residents out of their homes. Now is the time to put in place plans that will help homeowners keep their homes, keep rents affordable, and communities livable.

4. Keep Doctors Medical Center Open. We must make sure the County takes responsibility for keeping DMC open. All our residents must have access to nearby medical care. Area hospitals should share the costs. Corporations that compromise and threaten our health must support medical facilities in the area.

5. Strengthen community, union, and social justice orga-nizations in their efforts to bring positive change. Whether the initiatives involve playlots, stopping violence, stopping discrimination against immi-grants, or supporting re-entry programs, they require an active partnership between people and their elected officials.

6. Deal with the many issues that the refinery presents. n Pollution continues to be the biggest problem. n Every year Chevron pours 500 tons of deadly particulates into our air. n Its initial “modernization” proposal actually increases 61 out of 88 Toxic

Air Contaminants.n Chevron does the bare minimum and only in response to community

pressure. n Chevron can do better. It could reduce pollution. Chevron is a big part of

Richmond for the foreseeable future. We need it to truly modernize to be cleaner and safer.

Here are six areas I believe need special attention:

Working together in Richmond we’ve made a lot of progress over the last ten years. There is still more to be done. Our values of equality, democracy, respect, and integrity will lead the way.

The Team Richmond campaign is aboutempowering people. Our campaign depends on volunteers and candidates going door-to-door to lis-ten to our neighbors and to explain what we stand for.

Our opponents end up with obligations to Big Money interests by relying on them for their mailings and media. We don’t take corporate contributions so we can represent the people of Richmond.

The domination of the super-rich in politics is leading to ever increasing inequality and poverty and an unliv-able world. We can be part of reversing this trend by making Richmond a more caring and livable city.

I worked 30 years as an electrician in the auto industry in Detroit. I teach electrical and instrumentation courses in the Contra Costa Community College system. I am on the City Workforce Investment Board and am passionate about job training.

My wife and I have been together for more than

40 years. Margaret has long family roots in

Richmond. Her father’s business has been in

Richmond for over 60 years. Both her parents were

active in the community. Margaret has been a

Richmond school teacher and psychologist. She is

a neighborhood council president. Our daughter

Johanna is a Spanish interpreter and works at

Stanford Medical Center.

I value good schools, parks, vibrant neighborhoods,

libraries, urban greenspace and gardening, playlots,

bike paths, full service grocery stores, farmers’

markets, the arts, music, and a pride in city history.

In addition to creating a good quality of life for our

residents, all of these attract new businesses with

the jobs that come with them. Zoe & Harley

I believe strongly that real change comes when a community organizes and acts on its own behalf. In the last seven years, I have been a leader of the Richmond Progressive Alliance. I have worked closely with Mayor McLaughlin and Vice Mayor Beckles in defining programs and building the support that resulted in much needed and positive change in Richmond.

Every week, my hiking group goes to a different part of the Bay Area. I want to protect our hills and shoreline for us and future generations.
