When I was very young, my older sister pointed out to me that I had a speech disorder. It’s called Malapropism, and it is neither severe nor very noticeable. In fact, this condition is actually extremely common and categorized as mis-speech rather than as an impediment. A malapropism is the accidental substitution of a word for a similar sounding, but incorrect, word. Since first learning about this speech condition, I have taken notice of how it has affected myself and others.

My thesis concentration centers mainly around malapropism and the relative field of speech therapy. I am interested in exploring the relationships between thought process, speech, speech disorders, and speech therapy. I’m exploring how I can apply design to communicate relative information about these topics in a new form. I would like to create something that is both functional and experimental. I am seeking to have what I discover inform what I create, as I continue my research and experiments.
