na.it/il-codice-atlantico/) . It is quite sure that from the beginning of the 13th century till the end of the 15th Milan was famous for its great advanced engineering re-garding water regimentation and the technol-ogy of canals and sluices, and this knowledge was exported all over Europe.Having learned this much you may be wonder-ing how much water there actually is in Milan!Well, in a city map dated 1888, in the city cen-ter one can count 124 water ways including ir-rigation ditches, wells, canals, springs, streams and rivers. But alas, the most unbelievable actual story tells us that, during the last century, they de-cided to establish a car congested town, se-cluding the central part of their beloved Navigli under an asphalt cover. Only the famous paint-er Carlo Carrà declared himself to be contrary to this landslide majority decision. So, from 1929 they quickly and completely changed not only the aspect of some roads, but even most of their habits, keeping only a feeble memory of the old times in some street names such as: Via Laghetto (little lake), Via Pontaccio (rotten bridge), Via Ponte Vetero (old bridge), Via Pantano (morass), Via Vettabbia (as it is still called an underground stream from the Latin word vectare meaning to transport). After 2000 years of life on top of such a wet structure, even fighting wars for their mainte-nance, could modern times have really erased a deep love for water from the Milanese DNA? Apparently not at all! Now a slow and inexorable nostalgia is rising up in the Milanese, who are suffering and com-plaining about the lack of the pleasant waves just in front of their homes. Here we are again.A current project is planning to re-open at least 8 km. of the so called Naviglio Martesana which still flows from the north-east to the south-west of Milan under Via Melchiorre Gioia, Via Pontaccio, Via San Marco, Via Fatebenefratelli, Piazza Cavour, Via Senato, Via Visconti di Modrone, Via Sforza, Via Molino delle Armi, and pops up again where it reaches the Darsena. In the near future, perhaps these waters will

hellohelloMilan was founded by the Celts, the ex-tremely prolific, Northern people possi-bly coming from Scandinavia, who roamed through Europe in a continuous search for new lands to settle new families. For both necessity and tradition they tended to establish themselves near lakes and rivers, being skilled in producing various craft to navi-gate though any watery route. When they arrived in a place (that nowadays we call Piazza Cordusio) where there was a thick forest with plenty of springs and streams, they thought it was perfect for a new settlement. Since then - more or less in 300 B.C.- Milan grew like an inland Venice, and during the Roman period had a net of canals, inside and around its walls, even a port (in the actual Piazza Missori), from which fluvial river traffic was able to sail along the Po, reach the Adriatic sea, and from there arrive at all sorts of “inter-national” harbors or berths.Later on, around 1200 A.C. the monks diversi-fied the rationale of this old trade route, and started manually digging the actual huge net-work of our canals creating a further system for well organized and intensive agricultural use. Their technique was so good that to transport the marble to build the cathedral, the Milanese used the same digging system to open a new canal starting near the quarry on the Alps and arriving in a little harbor (in the actual Via Laghetto) close to Piazza Duomo. The shipping system was so efficient that they started calling the impressive water network “Navigli” meaning Navigable Canals. Another reference to Milan’s water was stat-ed in 1288, by the writer and poet Bonvesin de la Riva in his book “De magnalibus urbis Mediolani” (The prominence of the city of Milan) where we read that people “can drink as much as they want from the springs without suffering any disease.”On the other hand, Leonardo Da Vinci, from 1482 to 1496, had to solve the problem of the different water level which was stopping the boats in the outskirts of Milan’s dukedom, where the Duke wanted to establish an import tax office, and obviously let the goods come inside the city. Leonardo’s projects for the so called Conca dell’Incoronata sluice (you can still see the remains and the original doors in the very central Via San Marco) are now part of the famous Codex Atlanticus (Atlantic Codex) (read more in http://www.leonardo-ambrosia-

sparkle again under the sunlight, and our peo-ple will be able to navigate, as the Romans did, from the Lakes Maggiore and Como to the Adriatic Sea.Ok, you may say, this is a great project, but who is going to pay for it?This in fact is an important issue. The estimate for removing just the concrete covering is about 223million Euros, but the fi-nal total cost could reach 407million Euros. Our Regional politicians are not that worried. They hope to raise private resources through some project funding, and obtain subscriptions from important people.Further income could be provided by using the water flow to produce energy, exploiting the level gap of 108 meters, from Como to Milan, or even more if the system could reach the southern city of Pavia.Well, from now on, if you want to find out the latest news on this amazing project see the website www.riaprireinavigli.it, where you can find some articles in English.

Students can earn two design credentials after studying design in the contemporary design mecca of Southern California, U.S.A. and Mi-lan, Italy, the world capital of design. The degree will allow students the opportunity to spend up to two years studying in Milan, and two years studying in San Diego, a rising contemporary and creative loca-tion for design in Southern California. • ComoThe famous lakeside city is just an hour from Milan by train, and so it is an attractive possibility for a day’s excursion. The service “A Friend in Milan” will take you there by car or by train. If you want to do it yourself, take a train from the Stazione Nord station (Piazza Cadorna) to Como Lago, a station positioned right on the lakeside (www.lenord.it). From here, ferries and hydrofoils will take you all over the lake, and a bus to Bellagio offers a cheap and picturesque alternative to boat transport. Info from the Como tourist office, tel. 031.3300.128, www.lakecomo.com, [email protected]. Ferry info www.navigazionelaghi.it
• Driving, parkingWhenever you leave your car unattended, make sure that there are no bags, cameras, wallets etc. in sight inside. To enter the city centre (the area within the socalled“Cerchia dei Bastioni”, a circular area which, to give you an idea, starts from Porta Venezia on one side, Piazza XXIV Maggio on the other), you have to pay a tariff in the Area C system, about €5 per entrance. The Area C system operates Mon-Fri, 7.30-19.30. For further information, click on the Area C banner on the website www.comune.milano.it. Petrol stations in the city close for lunch, Satur-day afternoons and Sunday. There are a few self-service pumps in the city. Motorway service stations are open 24 hrs a day. To park in the streetside areas marked by blue lines, you need to buy a SostaMilano card, on sale at the “ATM Point” in the Duomo metro station (open Mon-Sat 7.45-20.15), and in Cadorna, Centrale F.S., Loreto and Romolo metro stations, as well as in many bars and to-bacconists. The cards are also sold directly by the attend-ants near the parking areas (they have uniforms and ID cards). You mark the start of stay on the card by scratch-ing the year, month, day, and time. Various privately-run carparks also exist (blue P sign). If you are driving into Milan, you can use the multistorey car parks at the Metro stations Cascina Gobba, Famagosta, Bisceglie, Molino Dorino and Lampugnano, open 6.00-01.00, the cheapest parking in the city. The Central Station pharmacy is open 24 hours a day, cur-rently on the ground floor on the right-hand side of the station. For English-speaking medical, dental and psy-chology services, see the advertising spaces on this and other pages.• Original language booksMelting Pot, via Vettabbia 3, American Bookstore, Via Camperio 16 (MM1 Cairoli), Feltrinelli, Piazza Cavour (MM3 Turati, Montenapoleone, trams 1, 2, 20). The Bib-lioteca di Anglistica (Centro per gli Studi degli Stati Uniti - CSSU), Piazza S. Alessandro 1, tel. 02.5031.3567, is part of a library in the State University premises, open to the public 10.00-17.00 Mon-Thurs. Info at http://users.unimi.it/cssu/• Personal identityIt is a good idea to have your passport or ID card with you at all times, as you may be asked for it in the most surprising of situations (using a library, Internet café, etc.)• PostagePost offices are marked with a yellow “PT” sign. The cen-tral post office for letters, parcels etc. is in Via Cordusio 4, open Mon-Fri 8.00-19.00; Sat 8.30-12.00, Sun closed. The post office in Piazza Cordusio is for postal account payments, money changing etc., same times. Most other post offices are open in the morning only, Mon-Fri 8.00-14.00, Sat 9.30-13.00. Stamps are also available at to-bacconists (T sign). Red post boxes are located outside post offices and tobacconists. Italian first day covers and other philatelic products are sold at Via Cordusio 4. Post information, tel. 803160, Mon-Sat, 8.00-20.00, www.poste.it.• Public transportIn Milan, buses, trams and metro (underground) trains are run by a company named ATM. Ordinary tickets cost €1.50 and can be obtained in Metro stations (newsa-gents, automatic machines, ticket offices in some sta-tions), and from bars displaying the green and orange ATM sticker on the window. Weekly, monthly or yearly season tickets are available. The largest ATM ticket sales and info offices are the ATM Point information offices in Duomo, Cadorna, Centrale, Loreto and Romolo Metro stations, open Mon-Sat 7.45-19.00. The ordinary ticket should be franked using the machine as soon as you get on a bus or tram, or go through the Metro turnstiles, or before getting on an FNM train. The same ticket can be used for 90 minutes from the time franked on the ticket, with any combination of buses and trams (the magnetic ticket should be franked on every journey), but with just the one Metro journey, or one journey on a Passante Fer-roviario train, or on a FNM train (within city limits). The one-day ticket (abbonamento giornaliero, €4.50) and the two-day ticket (abbonamento bigiornaliero, €8.25) last 24/48 hours respectively from the first franking: frank the magnetic ticket on every journey. The Metro system consists of 4 lines, number 1 (red), 2 (green), 3 (yellow), and the “Passante Ferroviario” (S trains). The FNM is the privately-run train service running from Stazione Nord in Piazza Cadorna. For info on FNM trains, there is an info office in the Cadorna station, open 7.00 to 20.00 every day. www.lenord.it Metro trains run from around 6.15 un-til 00.30, except on Saturday nights when trains run till about 02.00. During the night there is a replacement bus service for parts of lines 1 and 3. There are large inter-change car parks at the stations Lampugnano, Bisceglie (MM1), Cascina Gobba, Famagosta (MM2), open 7.00-01.00 (overnight parking possible). To get to the Rho Fi-era trade fair district during fairs you can buy a return ticket at €5 (Andata/ritorno Rho Fiera) or a day ticket (Giornaliero fiera) €7. The normal one or two day ticket is not valid for getting to Rho Fiera. For public transport info, toll-free info at 800.808181 (7.30-19.30), www.atm-mi.it. The “Radiobus” service, operating from 20.00 to 02.00, is like a collective taxi service. A very comfort-able air-conditioned minicoach picks you up and takes you where you want to go. You have to book by phone
at 02.4803.4803, preferably well in advance – say a few hours – or even just before your trip, but in this case you run the risk of not getting a place as well as spending ages listening to a recorded message. Cost €4 if you pay on the bus, less if you buy the ticket (ordinary ATM ticket + Radiobus ticket, total €3.50) in advance. This service may seem complicated, but it is so convenient and comfortable that it’s well worth the effort.• RailwaysMost trains leave from the Stazione Centrale. Train information can be obtained from the information of-fice at the station, or by phone, 892021, or best of all by Internet (www. trenitalia.com). Remember that any train ticket should be franked using the yellow machines situated at the near end of the platforms, just before boarding the train. A return ticket should be franked again before the return journey. If you forget, you will be fined! If you do forget, find the conductor on the train as soon as possible, and the fine will be reduced. For many trains, seat booking is obligatory. In any case it is a good idea to buy your ticket early (at least the day before) and book your seat (small extra charge). Saves frustration queuing while your train is about to depart. Be sure to claim your booked seat within ten minutes after departure. For the differently abled and people with sight prob-lems, there is a phone number for the whole of Italy: 199.30.30.60, operating every day, 7.00-21.00. Fer-rovie Nord trains leave from Cadorna and run to vari-ous locations north of Milan, including the lakes and Malpensa airport. See www.lenord.it• Safety and securityIn Milan, like most large cities, there is a problem of small time theft. Take care of personal possessions at all times! Don’t leave your bags unattended even for a moment, particularly in crowded locations like Piazza Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Also take care in and around the Central Station, and when on trams and metro during the rush hour. If, at the station or airport, someone approaches you and offers you a taxi, this is not the normal taxi and it will cost much more. This is happening particularly at Linate airport, the taxi turns out to be a chauffeur-driven car with a bill to match. Beware of buying fake merchandise on the street, it will be low quality and it’s also against the law. People selling roses in restaurants have noth-ing to do with the restaurant, just say no (unless you want one, of course!). If you give money to the many beggars in the city and on the Metro trains you are financing organized crime.• TaxisIt is almost impossible to stop a taxi on the street in Milan: you have to locate one of the taxi-ranks (see map pages), or call one of the radio taxi firms (02.4040, 02.8585, 02.4000, 02.6969). A few taxis accept credit cards. If in doubt about price, ask the driver for an estimate before setting off. On-line esti-mates at www.milanotaxi.it• TelephonesThe 02 dialling code for Milan is incorporated into phone numbers. If you are calling Italy from abroad, you have to include the “0” of this prefix, ie +39.02.(number). Numbers starting 339, 347, 348 etc. are for mobile phones, these calls cost more. Numbers starting with 0 are for fixed phones, 1 for public utili-ties (police etc.), 3 for mobiles, 8 for toll-free num-bers.
• Ticket info: Teatro alla ScalaThe ticket office is in Duomo metro station. It is open every day 12.00-18.00 (closed public holidays and Au-gust). Payment in Euro cash or by credit card.
