Colorado Wildflower Photography Destinations!

W ith summer finally upon us in Colorado, there are plenty of local or short drive destinations promising beautiful wildflower photo opportunities in the coming weeks. Most of this month’s information was

originally presented by Chuck Winters last fall as a club presentation, with input from many of our members. Parts of that presentation are reprinted below, with NOW being a great time to get out there and add to your Colorado wildflowers photograph collection. For those interested in knowing more about the flowers you find, consider taking along one of the many wildflower guidebooks available. The one I use and recommend is the “Guide to Colorado Wildflowers” by G.K. Guennel. This guide is available in two volumes—one for the mountains, the other for the plains and foothills.

At the Last Meeting Our May club meeting featured an exceptional and different program by Weldon Lee. Mr. Lee is a charter member of NANPA – the North American Nature Photography Association – and has published books on wildlife, including Rocky Mountain wildlife. His work has been published in a wide range of magazines and has been featured on television. The message conveyed in his presentation was the power of photography to change public opinion and people’s view of the world, and the ability for photographers of all abilities to use photography to reach others.

To quote Weldon’s website: “Unless we act now, many wildlife species face extinction during this century," proclaims Weldon. "Hopefully, others will feel the passion I have for our wild brothers and sisters and it will motivate them to become involved in wildlife preservation. Maybe, just maybe, my photography and writing will be the tipping point necessary to make that happen."

Mr. Lee encouraged those present to consider using their own photography towards goals of educating others and helping forming public opinion on issues important to the wildlife and nature photographer. After the program, Mr. Lee answered questions from the audience. This month’s competition was also judged by Mr. Lee. For more information, I encourage a visit Weldon’s website at www.weldonlee.com , or look for Weldon Lee Wildlife Images on Facebook.

Digital Study Meeting

Our April meeting will show “How to Create Your Own Website” - Bruce Norman will demonstrate the ins and outs of how to create a killer gallery centric web site.

All paid members are encouraged to attend the digital study meetings. The meetings start at 7:15 PM, normally on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Enter through the main entrance, not the doors used for accessing the theater. Bring a notebook and writing implement to take your notes! These meetings are a great opportunity to learn something new every month.

Library News from the Lamb’s The warm weather has arrived and along with it comes many opportunities for new and unusual photos. How about some bear pictures?? Maybe you can catch all of the beautiful wildflowers peeking out from under their blankets of snow on Trail Ridge Road. You might be attending some beautiful mountain weddings or maybe some by the seashore. Don’6t forget that the library has some great books, DVD’s, and older videos of some of those places with new ideas for great pics. So. Come and check us out. Here are a couple of my favorites for this month – How to Photograph Landscapes by Joseph Lange – donated by Charlie and Rita Summers. It has beautiful pictures and techniques that you can use to enhance your landscape photographs. Another book, which we purchased from it’s author is Wildflowers of Colorado Field Guide by Dan Mammoser and Stan Tekiela It highlights the growing zones and specific wildflowers in our gorgeous mountains. It would be great to take with you on a shoot to Telluride, Lake City, etc. Also, don’t forget that we have a copy of Capture MY Colorado – you can spend hours checking out the websites of all of the photographers highlighted in this book, including Rich Seeley, now a contributing member of our club.

If you have any books out that I have not seen in a while please call and let me know or return them at the next meeting. I would really appreciate it. So, stop by the table and CHECK US OUT THIS SUMMER!.

By entering National Wildlife’s 40th Annual Photo Contest, your teen might win a cash award—and his or her photo might be published in National Wildlife® magazine. But an even more precious benefit is certain: encouraging a lifelong love of nature. Our special Youth Division invites 13-17 year-olds to capture images of nature and wildlife (even a simple backyard bird or squirrel can make for a fascinating subject). Your $20 photo contest entry fee lets them submit up to 25 photos. They will also receive a one-year membership to the National Wildlife Federation, which includes six issues of National Wildlife. Visit our 2010 contest page for details
