The meeting was called to order at 7:04 PM by Superintendent, Wade Mountz. Total in attendance was 32.

No new visitors.

The January 2015 minutes were approved as they are.

The Treasurer’s Report was presented by the PPD-NMRA Treasur-er, Frank Pareso.

Wade brought up news that:• Jim Lipper’s wife, Karen, recently passed away.• Don Strait has passed away (Milepost editor in 1995-1996; the

name of his model railroad was The Strait Line).• Steve Berkheimer’s wife recently broke her hip — she fell on the

ice. She is back home healing and using a walker.

Jerry Drewes reported that the Youth In Model Railroading group can’t work with getting all of the kids to one of our meetings. How-ever, he invited members of PPD-NMRA to attend their meetings which is 9:00am to 12:00nn, every third Saturday, at Immanuel Lu-theran Church (just west of the Colorado School For The Deaf And The Blind), go in through the north door. This church is at the north-west corner of Pikes Peak Avenue and Institute Street, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Please see or contact Jerry for more information ([email protected] or (719) 570-9559). Also, they have a really nice website at: http://www.ymr-online.org/ . We’ve added the dates of their meetings to our Upcoming Events column.

Space is available for monthly program for anyone interested for May or June through November for this year. See or contact Charles Marchbanks for more information.

February 2015Meeting Minutes

The last meeting was on Friday, February 13, 2015.

Charles’ daughter, Lindsey, made a quick presentation for selling girl scout cookies.

Dusty Thomson reported that the next division swap meet will be on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 701 North 20th Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado (west of the Uin-tah Gardens mall). Folks coming for table setup and module setup should be able to get into the church by 6:00pm on Friday, May 8, 2015 — there was also discussion about possibly having the month-ly PPD-NMRA meeting there on that Friday as well. It was planned to vote on that issue at next month’s meeting. The May swap meet should be in May 2015 issue of Model Railroader magazine. Dusty also announced that there will be a second swap meet, same location, on Saturday, October 17, 2015.

There was discussion about asking Jimmy Patterson, from the mod-ule group, to be the new webmaster for the PPD-NMRA.

Planning for layout tours in July-August of this year. Working on possibly including Pueblo and Canon City.

Jeff Cahill talked about the details if members go up to visit the Colorado Model Railroad Museum layout in Greely, Colorado. He thinks a Saturday would be a good day to this. We could go up in a van or car pool. May or June looks like a good date range. We can decide later. Cost for tour is about $10.00. Two-hours to travel up there, have lunch, the tour is about two-hours, then two-hours traveling back to Colorado Springs. We’ll need to get list of people interested in going at some point.

There was discussion on having one or more picnics this year. Might have one picnic at the home of Jim Von de Boncour.

Andy Buco gave an update on TECO. The company, Freedom Fi-nancial, that has the expo center, is changing their name to some-thing else. So we’ll have to see what the expo center will be called. Will new TECO cards have to be printed? Other planned events at the April TECO: the Boy Scouts will be working on their railroad badge program, Andy is planning to work on a hand-laid HO-scale double-crossover, and Wade is planning to have a switching layout for people to try out (like a Time Saver layout). Kristin asked about having a poster, pamphlets, and a sign up sheet in the inside corner of the module group’s layout. John Emmot gave an update on the module group.

There was a break and the meeting resumed at 7:56 PM.

Frank Pareso presented the door prizes.

Presentation by John Emmot on John Allen and videos of his fa-mous Gorre & Daphetid Railroad.

Jerry Bond presented contest winners (see the February 2015 Con-test Entries for more information).

Meeting ended at 8:44pm.

Upcoming Events

Well, maybe the worst of the cold and snow is winding down. Time to think about springtime activities and what we want to do as a division between now and our summer layout tours. I will bring up some items from Gary Myers since the last meeting. I am expecting Jimmy Patterson to tell us a little about our website. I hope to have some additional comments and conversation concerning our talked about trip to Greeley and our spring picnic. Hopefully we can get another update concerning both our own swap meet and the next TECO show at the financial center. Hope to see all of you on the 9th at 7:00 PM. Don’t forget our monthly modeling contest, a weathered tank car.

Superintendent’s Notes

by Wade Mountz, Superintendent of PPD, NMRA.

Joe Costa and Kristin Phillip showed a small wooden HO-scale replica of a “Whispering Giant” statue that is based on the actual prototype in Winslow, Arizona. The work of sculptor Peter Wolf, there have been Whispering Giant statues placed in every state in the United States. Joe and Kristin plan to have this model on their Winslow, Arizona module they have been working on. This replica was carved by Scott Schnell.

For this year, our January issue had eleven pages, our February is-sue had nine pages, and this issue only has seven pages. If this trend continues, our newsletter will be down to one page by June! But fear not, I believe it is just a quiet time of the year for the model railroad-ing hobby. However, I do want encourage our readers to send in ar-ticles they have written, and/or photographs they snapped, of model railroad-related topics. We would love to see photographs of your layout and what you are doing on it. Or how about a photograph of something interesting you saw on the Joint Line on a recent trip to Denver? Please e-mail me ([email protected]) or see me at the meeting for questions, comments, or details on this if you are interested in contributing to The Milepost.

Along this same line of topic, I would like to introduce a new column to The Milepost, starting next month, to be called, Railcar Of The Month. The goal of this new column will be to show-case a railcar, of any scale, that someone in our organization has in their collection. It can be scratch-built, already built, weathered, un-weathered, detailed, or not detailed, brand new, or old. Members can e-mail me a photograph of their railcar with a sentence or two about it. I will then pick out one car from what was sent in and feature it in the new column. Depending on how many submissions are turned in, those that aren’t selected for a given month, may be carried over to the next month. Remember, this isn’t a contest per se, but a way of showcasing railcars that are interesting and that you would like to share with the readers of The Milepost.

The 2016 RMR convention committee is looking for a volunteer to serve as Secretary/Administrator for the upcoming 2016 RMR Con-vention to be held in Colorado Springs, October 3-9, 2016.

The 2016 RMR convention committee is also looking for several volunteers to help work its promotional table at the upcom-ing 2015 convention in Denver, Colorado (June 3-7, 2015). Volun-teers would NOT have to be registered for the convention because the table will set outside of the convention floor. Please contact either Roy Thompson ([email protected]) or Wade Mountz ([email protected]) for further details.

February’s contest was Ready-To-Run Railcar With Graffiti. We had three contest entries which are detailed below along with some display-only entries.

February 2015Contest Entries

The first-place winner was Jeff Cahill with this Great Northern Railroad boxcar. N-scale, custom weathering with Blair Line graf-fiti decals. Some free-hand tagging on both sides of the railcar.

John Emmot had this display of a HO-scale “advertising graffiti” boxcar while reminding us that there was NO graffiti in 1904!

Second-place winner was Wade Mountz with this Santa Fe Railroad yard switcher #2280 (Class 2260; Baldwin model; DS4-4-1000; 1,000 H.P.; built March 1949; HO-scale). One of 41 identical units. Was sold, traded, or scrapped during the 1960’s. Tagged in Kansas City, awaiting disposition. Note canvas covering over the exhaust.

The third-place winner was Tony Pawlicki with this Great Northern Railroad (Grease Snorther) covered hopper in HO-scale.

Wade displayed this HO-scale Southern Pacific Railroad 40’ steel box-car, #163049, single door, built 1946, tagged in Chicago, Illinois.

It is that time again. We still have some time before the next TECO show. I know of a couple of upgrades in various stages of execution. Joe and Kristin are working on scenery for the inside corner. They are learning about blue foam and plaster. Their in-progress reports look like it will be an impressive finished product. Joe promises to tell us all about it when its done.

Jerry Hansz is also thinking about filling in more scenery around the cable car installation on another corner. He has the build-ings, but I think he is looking for a ‘project engineer’ to carry out the actual work. Perhaps it could be you? We’ll discuss at the meeting.

This is also the time when any other work on the modules can get done. If things haven’t been exactly perfect on your module, this may be the time to find the problem and fix it. Perhaps you need another feeder to a suspect piece of track or maybe a turnout isn’t providing power through all of its components. The new Model Railroader has a great article on DCC-friendly turnouts. Good tech-niques for everyone.

The January/February eBullitin from the NMRA has a good explanation of the liability insurance coverage for our activi-ties. It should have gone to everyone National has e-mail addresses for. Which brings up the topic of member renewals. Your anniver-sary date is on your membership card. It is up to the individuals to stay current with their dues. If you don’t have your card, contact Bob Binder or myself to get your renewal date. It is also important to make sure your email address is current with National. If you have changed your e-mail, you can update it on the NMRA website or inform a Division officer. We will forward the change for you.

If any NMRA member out there is building a module or home layout, we have a good supply of blue foam for terrain cre-ation. Let me know what you need.

Remember, the Youth In Model Railroading meetings are on the third Saturday of the month. See the calendar elsewhere in this newsletter. Bring your experience and see what the kids are up to.

That’s it for now. I hope to see you all at the next meeting.
