Spelling & FluencySpelling Journey - IndividualDesignate a starting line and a finish line. The student stands at the starting line, holding a whiteboard and marker. The teacher reads a spelling word. The student writes it on her whiteboard. If it is written correctly, she may take one step toward the finish line. If she writes it incorrectly, she must take one step backward. The teacher then calls out the next word. Play until the student reaches the finish line.

Do not worry about whether students spell every word correctly in this activity. Provide support if asked for it. Focus on letting students build their skills and their confidence by practicing sounding out words and writing them.

Miles and Jax Go Camping

Miles and Jax - Chapter 4 - Miles and Jax Go Camping



Let’s go camping!” Miles says.

“Yes!” yells Jax.

He jumps up and runs around and around.



“First we need to get a tent,” says Miles.

He finds a tent in the basement.

Jax helps him bring it upstairs.



“Let’s bring a flashlight,” says Jax.

“Good thought,” says Miles. He grabs a flashlight.

“What other things do we need?” says Jax.

“Let’s bring ketchup for the hot dogs,” says Miles. “And sticks for roasting the hot dogs on the campfire.”

“We might need boots and raincoats in case it rains,” says Jax.



Miles and Jax fill up the backpacks and set out for the campground.

The campers hike for a bit.

“I need water,” says Jax. “Did you bring water?”

“No! We forgot water!” Miles says. “We need to go back and get water.”



Miles and Jax go back home.

Miles gets water for each of them, and then the campers set out for the campground again.



“I can’t wait to eat!” says Jax.

“Hold on! Did you pack the hot dogs?” says Miles.

“No, I thought you brought the hot dogs,” says Jax.

“Oops. We better go back for the hot dogs,” says Miles.



At last Miles and Jax get to the campground. Jax sets up the tent.

“What did you do with the matches, Jax?” Miles asks. “I can’t find them.”

“Matches? I did not bring matches. Did you?” Jax looks at Miles. Miles looks at Jax.

“Well, we cannot light a campfire without matches. We need to go back,” says Miles.



After Miles and Jax go back and get matches, Miles lights the campfire.

At last Miles and Jax roast the hot dogs and eat them.



“I am tired,” Miles says. “Let’s go get in the tent.” When Miles gets in the tent, though, he cannot find his sleeping bag.

“Jax!” Miles shouts. “We forgot our sleeping bags!”

“NO!” yells Jax. He moans and sobs and pounds on the ground. He has a great big tantrum.

Miles sits and shakes his head.

Just then, Miles hears Mom calling. Miles peeks out of the tent.

“Miles! I thought you might get cold without your sleeping bags, so I brought them.”



“Woohoo!!” Miles and Jax jump up and shout for joy.

“Thanks, Mom!” Miles says.



At last Miles and Jax get snug and warm in the sleeping bags.

“Miles,” Jax says. “Let’s go camping all the time.”

Jax waits for Miles.



“Miles?”

“Miles?”

“Miles?”
