Discover untouched landscapes thriving with an abundance of wildlife. Carved out by glacial action millions of years ago, this fiord with 40km of winding sea inlets is nestled between high rising peaks and depths reaching down to 421m deep.

Doubtful Sound is 10 times larger than Milford Sound and is defined by lush rainforests clinging to dramatic peaks. Waterfalls are also gloriously abundant in the area, particularly during the wetter seasons. In the Hall Arm, the Browne Falls cascades 619 metres; Helena Falls at Deep Cove tumbles 220 metres.

Wildlife is another reason to visit this fiord - keep an eye out for bottlenose dolphins and fur seals.

The most famous of birds that inhabit the fiord is the rare and captivating Fiordland crested penguin. The only penguin to breed exclusively in New Zealand, it is found mainly in Fiordland and Stewart Island. You may also spot native New Zealand falcons, white-faced herons, white herons, cattle egrets, a variety of shags and the common black-backed gull.
