Millenium Goals PresentationBy: Felipe SilvaWhat are the Millenium Goals?The Millenium Goals are 8 goals that all 191 UN Member States have agreed to try to achieve by the year 2015. Which are:

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hungerGoal 2: Achieve universal primary educationGoal 3: Promote gender equality and empower womenGoal 4: Reduce child mortality ratesGoal 5: Improve maternal healthGoal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseasesGoal 7: Ensure environmental sustainabilityGoal 8: Develop a global partnership for development

Goal 8: : Develop a global partnership for developmentThis Goal deals with the Economic Integration between countries in order to solve internal problems for the poorest countries. This includes, eradicate poverty, improve healthcare and infrastructure, according to The World Bank.Target: Address the special needs for Least Developed CountriesIncludes:Tariff and/or quota free access fpr the least developed countries Enhanced programme of debt relief for heavily indebted poor countries.More generous ODA (Official Development Assistance) to poor countries in order to complete their needs.Indicators:Trade aid for developed country imports from developing countries and least developed countries, admitted free of duty.Net ODA aid, donors from other countries for the main needs of the Least Developed CountriesProportion of bilateral official development assistance of OECD/DAC donors that is untied.Proportion of ODA provided to help build trade capacity

Trade Aid from US ATPDEAThis is an American law commonly known as Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act. This mainly a law that provides benefits to Andean Countries, especially Colombia, Ecuador and Peru by reducing tariffs in the US to Latin American exporters. This is in order to reduce Violence by Drug Wars and Poverty within the country.

For Colombia this aid helped more than 300 products, such as flowers, jewelry, petrol, etc. The most influencing was the petrol and flowers as it is seen in this graph.

This exports made colombia increase its total revenue from expoerts. In the recent years:

Nowadays, in 2014, the APTA was renewed in 2013 by president Barack Obama, without Ecuador. Consequently brings an increase in Colombian revenue from its exports since there is less competence.600 more jobs in Sectors of Flowers.

Positive Aspects:This Agreement can lead to a decrease of poverty since more revenue is coming Colombia as products can be exported without any barriers (Tariffs).Makes the government have more revenue and therefore increase its spending on Education and Sanitary for eradicate poverty of Colombia.

Negative Aspects: As it is a trade agreement this makes dependence on the tariff free access as its is important for Colombian exporters to gain revenue.

Other trade aid is the SGP plus which is a comercial agreement between Colombia and the European Union, which stalishes the tariff free access for agricultural products. This agreement is from 2005-2015 in order to eradicate poverty in Colombia.

Colombias Special NeedsAccording to the United Nations Colombia needs are:

Poverty and Social DevelopmentSecurity and PeaceViolence and Insecurity in Colombia Violence in Colombia is a national problem as it is considered one of the factors of poverty in Colombia. The rural areas are affected by the Guerrillas for example Las Farc and ELN leading to the displacement of people, thus making them extremely poor.

This forced displacement has been increasing by years as it is seen in the graph.Colombian Military Aid One way to reduce the internal conflict is the Plan Colombia aid, which is an agreement between U.S and Colombia in order to fight against Drug Traffic and Guerrillas in Colombia, which consequently affects poverty. In 2014 the current fiscal American budget is $320 million, which $140 million will be attribute to counter-narcotics, $28.5 million will be attributed to the Colombian army and the other $140 million left are for Institutional Strengthening and Humanitarian Aid.Positive Aspects: This agreement could lead to a decrease in poverty as people are beneficiated with housing and military support in order to reduce the amount of IDPs in the country.Negative Aspects:This agreement can be seen as an opportunity cost, since the money used in order to solve the problem could be used for other investment for example, Infrastructure.Poverty in Colombia Poverty is a big issue in Colombia. It is considered one of the highest poverty and inequality rates in Latin America. Nevertheless within the recent years poverty has decreased significantly.

This decrease in poverty has been due to the intervention of the ODA (Official Development Assistance), this organization was made for economic cooperation in order to make countries developed and progress

In the case of Colombia the main point for the ODA aid is for eradicate poverty.

Colombia as one of the countries with highest rate of poverty in LA, it receives the second highest ODA aid after Haiti, it has increased from US$269 million in 2000 to 2011
