We have not only included a mult i tude of design variat ions, but also offerproducts suitable for al l types of environment, be i t a high tech off iceenvironment, school , hospital , residential or heavy industr ial area.

The location and usage of a project wi l l have a bearing on the type of doorfurniture specif ied.

Stainless steel and aluminium are wel l suited to most types of high traff ic orheavy duty environments.

Stainless steel is avai lable in 2 grades, 304 and 316.

316 grade stainless steel products are ideal ly suited for use in swimming poolor coastal environments.

Brass is a material that requires regular attent ion to maintain i t ’s appearance.It should not be subjected to heavy use or harsh environments. I t ’s f inish shouldbe well protected during the commissioning stages of a bui lding project . Brass lever and pul l handles are protected by the appl icat ion of an electro-phoret ic stove lacquer. Unlacquered brass is avai lable on request. I f unlacquered brass is used, i t wi l lrequire regular pol ishing.Our push plates and kicking plates are suppl ied unlacquered.

Real BMA and Pol ished Bronze products are avai lable to give a more tradit ionalf inish.

Nylon products are offered in a wide range of colours. The nylon material isvery strong and resi l iant making i t suitable for use in areas where i t wi l l besubjected to heavy usage. As the nylon product is coloured r ight through i tcannot be chipped off and scratches can simply be pol ished away using amanufacturers renovation ki t .

The correct specif icat ion of hinges is essential and great attent ion should bepaid not only to the size and weight of the door but also the frequency of thetraff ic that wi l l pass through i t .The best guide to hinge performance is past experience, but from t ime to t imeproblems occur which are outside our normal experience and a guide is thenvery useful . We have now classif ied many of our hinges and we recommendtheir use within these classif icat ions. The table below when cross-referencedwith the products in this section wil l ensure that the correct hinges arespecif ied.

Hinges for f i re doors must have amelt ing point in excess of 800°C.The majori ty of hinges comply withthis requirement, however, werecommend that you refer to ourtechnical department forclari f icat ion.

In accordance with BS4787 part 1 ,three hinges per leaf should bef i t ted. I f weight carrying is a majorrequirement, a pair of hinges shouldbe f i t ted high up the door and onenear the bottom. Equal ly spacedhinges should be f i t ted whenresistance to f ire and warping isimportant. On doors over 2110mmhigh where a fourth hinge is f i t ted,equal spacing should be used forresistance to warping and f ire andtwo pairs f i t ted high and low forweight carrying.

The Building Regulations 1991 “Access and facili t ies for disabled people”Approved Document M.

Building regulat ions are made for the specif ic purposes: health and safety, energy conservation and the welfare and convenience ofdisabled people. Standards and technical approvals are relevant guidance to the extent that theyrelate to these considerat ions. However, they may also address other aspectsof performance such as serviceabi l i ty, or aspects which although they relate tohealth and safety are not covered by the regulat ion.

Performance

In the Secretary of State’s view the requirements of Part M wil l be met bymaking i t reasonably safe and convenient for disabled people to:

a gain access to and within, bui ldings other than dwell ings and to use them. The provisions for access and faci l i t ies are for the benefi t of disabled people who are visi tors to the bui lding or who work in i t

b visi t new dwell ings and to use the principal storey. The provisions are expected to enable occupants to cope better in their own homes, al though not necessari ly to faci l i tate ful ly independent l iv ing for al l disabled people

Disabili ty Discrimination Act 1995 and the Disabili ty Discrimination(Employment Regulations 1996)

Under Regulat ion 8 of the Disabi l i ty Discrimination Act (Employment)Regulat ions 1996 and employer wil l not be required to alter any physicalcharacterist ic including within a bui lding which was adopted with the view tosatisfying the requirements of Part M of the Bui lding Regulat ions and met thoserequirements at the t ime the bui lding works were carr ied out and continues tosubstantial ly meet those requirements

Sanitary conveniences in buildings other than dwellings

In pr inciple, sanitary conveniences should be no less avai lable for disabledpeople than for able bodied people. The aim is to provide solut ions which wil lmost reasonably sat isfy that pr inciple.
