Introduction

The previous four decades of Indian agriculture went through the phases of green revolution, self sufficiency and favorable government policies to promote fine cereals. This has resulted in gradual reduction in the consumption of millets (sorghum, pearl millet, finger millet, foxtail millet, kodo millet, proso millet and barnyard millet) as staple foods in arid and semi-arid regions. In the process, not only the food habits changed but health problems have cropped up in the fast paced urban lives and rural households. Now, with increased awareness on health and nutrition, millets are resurfacing on the plates of the urban as well as rural people to ward off life style diseases such as diabetes and obesity. With unique advantages in their nutritional profile coupled with lower costs of production, millets have become raw materials for innovation in food processing, nutritious food formulations and health planning.

With this background, the main focus of this Global consultation is on promotion of millets for enhancing health and nutritional security and thereby to enhance health of people. Time has now come for projecting our traditional wealth in millets which are grown in dryland regions of our country.

The Directorate of Sorghum Research (DSR) an arm of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is celebrating Golden Jubilee year of Sorghum research during the year 2013. As a part of these celebrations, DSR is organizing a three-day Global Consultation on “Millets Promotion for Health and Nutritional Security” during December 2013 at Hyderabad, India. The successful organization of “National Seminar on Millets” by DSR during November 2010 encouraged us to host this conference with widened scope and targeting a larger audience at global level.

Target ParticipantsScientists, Engineers, Industry people, Professionals, Nutritionists, Entrepreneurs, Policy makers, other stakeholders related to Millets and Students.

Abstract:Selected abstracts for Poster Presentation and full paper submission are displayed on our website - www.globalmilletmeet.com

All the oral presentations will be made by the invited speakers only. Authors of selected abstracts will be invited to send full papers. Full papers must be submitted before November 20, 2013. Full papers accepted for publication will be published with internationally reputed publishers as proceedings.

Awards: Awards are instituted for the posters from students and young scientists in order to encourage them to lead a bigger role in future research. Posters from students and young scientists will be evaluated by a panel of eminent judges.
