DISPLACEMENT CRISIS IN IRAQ
WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean opens primary health care Centre in Dohuk, Iraq. From left to right: Dr. Sayed Jaffar Hussain, WHO Representative in Iraq; Dr. Ala Alwan, WHO Regional Director; and Dr. Rekawt Hama
Rasheed, Minister of Health of the Kurdistan region.
Over 45 per cent of health professionals have fled, leaving gaps in healthcare provision including primary healthcare, trauma surgery and obstetric care. Pregnant mothers estimated at more than 350,000 are particularly at risk, namely the 46,800 who might require comprehensive emergency obstetric interventions.
WHO supported the MOH and DOHs and Health cluster partners in ensuring that lifesaving health services continue to be provided, including 15 ambulances and 10 mobile clinics. More than 954 tons of medical supplies worth 6.1 million USD have been received through Erbil airport and
distributed to end users.
The capacity to provide the much needed health services is further hampered by the widespread destruction of health facilities. Recent assessment indicates that in Anbar, Ninewa, Salah Al-Din and Kirkuk, 14 hospitals (25% of the total) and over 160 health facilities (30 % of the total) have been damaged or destroyed and in some areas.
