When you hit the Ebony 2012 Power 100 list – sharing the spotlight withOprah, Toni Morrison, Ava DuVernay, LeBron James and more, it’s only naturalto think, “This is it. I’ve made it!” Right?

Well, that’s what I thought you’d think. And, I did, too, having yet to be inductedinto the elite club.

Lamar and Ronnie Tyler had seen the promised land. That’s why I wassurprised when I learned he didn’t feel quite as pleased as one would expect.When I asked Lamar about his night with the stars, he mentioned that he didn’tjust want to be in the room…

He wanted to be in the front of the room. What the…??

How could my friend and mentor-in-my-head be so brash? He rubbed elbowswith 99 super entities of our generation. “Give me a shot,” I thought. “I’d loveto be in the back of that room.“

Lamar was supremely grateful for what he had, too. However, like all thegreats, sitting in the back isn’t enough. They want more. The best turn thatgratitude into an action item. Something like “be greater” goes on their mentalto-do list.

And that’s why I’m always sitting at the feet of Lamar and Ronnie within theblogosphere, as it were. Lamar doesn’t ever rest on being “good.” Heck. Thetruly successful don’t even want to be great. They want to be the greatest. Aslong as they have breath in their body, there is another level for them.

ET, The Hip Hop Preacher, as Thomas has been dubbed, had the chance toattend the opening game of his hometown NFL team, the Lions, as an honoredguest. He had worked hard for another NFL team and as a “thank you” theyinvited him to their skybox. There was only one problem for Thomas: it wasn’tas a guest of the Lions, or as their inspiration. Although grateful, he wasn’tsatisfied.

It’s a hard lesson to discern from the view down here. I only see the current(super) peak Lamar and Ronnie have achieved. Their view from the top? All theother mountains left they’re tasking themselves to climb.

One. Day.

Oprah Winfrey purchased a ten percent stake in Weight Watchers in Octoberof this year, which sent the stock rising. This means Winfrey’s newly boughtstock made her more money than most expect to make in their lifetimes.

There are those who are a bit upset. Does Oprah need another stack of cash?There are those who are proud of her. Yes! Another Oprah win; we knew shecouldn’t do any wrong. And then there are those who want to know exactly howshe did it so we can repeat the process.

1 . Maximum Achievement: Strategies And Skills That Will Unlock YourHidden Powers To Succeed by Brian Tracy. This book is pretty much justlike The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, but from one man’s experiences instead of incollaboration format. In the book Tracy does give us secrets to using a positivemindset, and proves his point with his own rags to riches story, case studiesfrom being a business coach, and even Bible verses to prove his points.

As it pertains to Oprah Winfrey’s success and eventually yours and mysuccess, the part of this book where you need to focus on is positive thoughtsand thinking big. Last year at Oprah Winfrey’s The Life You Want Tour,Winfrey recounted her early years where she proclaimed she knew she wasdestined for a “better” life. She may not have seen a day where she made$60M or so, but as Tracy teaches in Maximum Achievement, belief in better foryourself and affirming with words that “it” is out there for you is a very good(and profitable) first step.

Two of my favorite affirmations I’ve adapted from Tracy are:

“Something wonderful is going to happen today.”

And then there’s “The universe is conspiring to make me happy.”

Telling yourself to expect greatness every day is one of the easiest things youcan do to put you on the path to greatness.

Tracy directs his readers in goal setting techniques, too. Writing down yourgoals is super important and a form of affirmation and envisioning for your lifethat will help you get to your $60M payday. Based on what I’ve learned inMaximum Achievement and in Oprah Winfrey’s latest move I can guarantee youMs. Winfrey hasn’t stopped thinking and affirming big for herself and we needto do the same.




2. 48 Laws Of Power by Robert Greene. When I was in college I would fallasleep in honors history. It wasn’t interesting or applicable to real life. Greene’sbook is 48 history lessons and every one of them is an awakening! Thestorytelling, the application to real life, there are fables; all of these things driveeach of his 48 laws home. There are ten I want to point out that are specific toWinfrey’s deal with Weight Watchers.

a. Create a cult: play on people’s need to believe. Winfrey is the masterPied Piper. I wouldn’t say she created a cult; that’s Greene’s definition of thislaw. However, she can lead millions to buy her favorite things, read books in asociety that has seem to become big screen obsessed, switch televisionnetworks - all with one or two words. People need to believe they can loseweight and who better to lead them to that conclusion than Winfrey. Thisplayed into the larger goal of creating wealth for Winfrey in that not only didWinfrey’s fans buy stock immediately to create this immediate, massive one-day wealth, but they will now buy the weight loss products and subscriptions.Do you have your cult?

b. Enter action with boldness. I’ve got to admit, I think Winfrey buying stockin a weight loss system is crazy bold. She’s often tried to lose weight andsucceeded only to gain the weight back. If I were her (and I’m not) I would bea bit too scared that people wouldn’t be enthused with this purchase becausethey may believe I personally am not going to succeed again. Not Winfrey.She’s bold and that’s what we need to learn from this move. As a side note andI’ll mention it again, but her mindset is different and that’s what we need tolearn if we want such huge payoffs to our endeavors.

c. So much depends on reputation. Going back to Winfrey’s reputation forweight loss and weight gain; it doesn’t matter. What matters is that she has abigger reputation for picking winners. Buying Weight Watchers stock is anendorsement not in Winfrey’s success, but in the success of the product itself.What are you doing to build the reputation of success?




d . Surrender tactic: transform weakness into power. Again, the weightloss. Winfrey has never hidden from the fact she has an on again off againweight struggle. Buying stock in Weight Watchers embraces this weakness andsays she’s willing to try again. That’s transforming weakness into power!

e . Concentrate your forces. Winfrey has influence, power, finesse, massappeal, authenticity, and money. Not an exhaustive list, but these positionedher to win and win big even for a billionaire. What forces do you have that youcan combine to make YOU win bigger than you ever have?

f . Master the art of timing. We are entering a season where, in the UnitedStates, people are prone to overeat. That is followed by a season of wantingto lose weight. Could Winfrey have had better timing in becoming a player inthe weight loss game? She’s riding the wave and we should, too.

g. Never appear too perfect. Of course, making that much loot in one dayscreams perfection. Again Winfrey is shining a light on not only her need to loseweight (although I think she’s looking great and confident these days), but alsoon the repeated conversations people have had about her failures in the samearena. Doesn’t matter. The law of power says that Winfrey is doing the perfectthing by not appearing too perfect.

h. Make your accomplishments seem effortless. I don’t know when I’ve everseen someone make so much and talk so little. The part amazing people aboutthis stock buy is we never heard about it. With all the interviews Winfrey does(she was on the cover of Fast Company the week the news of the stock buywent public), there was never any talk about her next move or her tryingsomething new. She also hasn’t come on any of the shows to talk about howhard the process was. Nope. This could have been her hardest venture yet, butyou won’t hear that from her. It’s a law of power and Winfrey obeys the law.




i . Play to people’s fantasies. Most people think that what Winfrey did thisweek was something only she or other rich people can do. So with thatvantage point this “windfall” of money played into their fantasies. However, asthese five books point out, it isn’t a fantasy at all, but something we can allaccomplish.

3. How Rich People Think by Steve Siebold. I’m about 80 chapters into this100 chapter book. Don’t worry. Each “chapter” is more like a meaty paragraphfollowed by recommended reading, critical thinking questions, and action steps.

The book focuses on middle class thinking versus world-class thinking; as amatter of fact each chapter title gets straight to that point. As the middle classwe’ve been taught some very limiting things. We aren’t taught to think in a non-linear way, and it hampers our success. In a nutshell we are taught hard workwill pay off, when in fact physical labor isn’t the key. Money follows ideas.

Middle class thinking is to believe working hard or being busy or even sitting ata desk and typing is the key to building wealth, when world-class thinkers, whohave usually amassed their wealth from being broke and then having amarketable idea, know that your mind is where your fortune is. Like in Tracy’sbook which I mentioned earlier, until you know what you don’t know about howto think yourself rich is presented to you, you can’t even conceive of a movelike Winfrey’s. Once your mind is opened to thought leaders who I’ve found torepeatedly talk about the universe and energy and focusing on the big ideasversus the big paychecks, you will immediately see a difference in how big youcan dream and how big you can execute. This is why Winfrey didn’t just dabblein a stock purchase, but went all in; it’s how rich people think.




4. The Wealth Choice: Success Secrets Of Black Millionaires by DennisKimbro. Although this book chronicles the secrets of Black millionaires, it is theperfect read for all who hope to aspire to be wealthy. Kimbro shows it is truly achoice to be wealthy as he tells the stories of sometimes broken, homeless,resource-less, network-less people who went on to amass great wealth. Thesemillionaires also were lead to big paydays by big ideas. They didn’t give intoconvention and let their circumstances dictate their outcomes. That’s a choiceyou can make. Those who make it are among the wealthiest of us today. Youdon’t have to be born rich. You just need to make a decision that you want tobe and then work towards that goal.

5. Confidence: How Winning Streaks And Losing Streaks Begin And Endby Rosabeth Moss Kanter. This book can be summed up with one Amazon,three-star review title: “Great concept! Wish it had been a better read.” I’m notgoing to say this is the best read out there, but the book makes great pointsand the one that applies here? Winners expect to win so they do. Winfrey hasbeen winning for three or four decades; some would argue all six of her life.She expects to win. How can we do that? How can we gain the confidence ofsay a Michael Jordan, the New York Yankees, or Duke’s basketball team whenthey are firing on all cylinders and winning championship after championship?

First let me tell you that for the reason listed above - people may see Winfreyas a loser when it comes to weight loss - Winfrey’s investment in this companycould have yielded in what could be called lukewarm results by regular peoplestandards. She could have invested and the stock not double in price. Shecould have only slightly moved the needle for the company or not at all. Did youlaugh at that last statement? Well, that’s because we all have confidence inWinfrey’s “Oprah effect,” and so does Winfrey.




What’s your effect? Do you have confidence, I mean burning, surefireconfidence, that when you start something, do something different, create anew product, build a new relationship, write for a new publication - do you do itwith the utmost confidence? It is imperative that you do because winners win.

So there you have it, the secret Oprah Winfrey formula for making $60M in2015 that you can use for a successful 2016. Speak with belief, act withpower, cultivate world-class thoughts, choose wealth, and do it all withconfidence!

I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’m a mom who works at home and my favoriteplace to think is the shower. Siebold mentions a lot of rich people use theshower as their thinking space. Anyway, I have a habit of doing a power poseand affirming, “I am Oprah Winfrey powerful!” while in the shower.Understanding that the tool she used - her steadfast belief in her abilities - tobecome who she is is available to all of us is an important step. 6 Power Plays Entrepreneurs Can Learn From

Winners always find new ways to win. Are you doing what you need to elevateyour game?

I’m sitting here watching my favorite part of any sporting event: the hype.Serena Williams, one of professional tennis’ most dominant figures in recenttimes, is getting ready to play at Wimbledon again, and when thecommentators and experts start weighing in and breaking down the match, myheart skips a beat. Great competitors are learners and I know that, as anentrepreneur, my ability to absorb the lessons of champions is going to movemy business forward.

During the Wimbledon chatter discussing Serena Williams’ match with MariaSharapova, an opponent Williams has dominated in previous matches, it wasmentioned that Williams did what some entrepreneurs fail to do: change theirmindset.

Williams has hired a new coach, and with that has come the new techniquesshe employs to play matches. The decision has made a formidable championeven better and I’m all for becoming a better entrepreneur.

Here are some mindset shifts entrepreneurs may want to consider if they areto improve their game.

1. Find dynamic mentors. Obtaining a coach or mentor is imperative forentrepreneurs. Yet, even with a proven mentor, you always need differentperspectives from different industries in your ear. Remember, you really arethe result of the five people closest to you. It may feel bad to say that yourcurrent crew who got you to this point can’t push you further, but upgrading theminds around you is necessary. You need experts who will push andencourage you to be your best, having seen the proven results of theirexpertise.

2. Be open to change. Your competition changes so your game plan has toas well. Periscope just hit the market and everyone is going for the marketinggold there. I’m not saying it is for everyone, but I am saying that, asentrepreneurs, we need to check out the shiny new toys our customers areloving. Even if it isn’t the best for our business, we may see an opportunity inour current marketing and tweak what we are doing to compete. For example,if you are a YouTube person now, I see a great similarity in how Periscope istaking over in the same way reality TV took over television. Reality TV is hereto stay, but scripted television is also coming back (see shows like Power andEmpire). For those YouTubers who can stay the course, I think they’ll retaincustomers and even find some new ones in the wake of most non-videocontent creators joining the Periscope phenomenon. They will, however, haveto be open to a few changes to stay competitive.

3. Motivate yourself. No matter who Williams’ coaches have been throughouther career, her work on the court is self-motivated. Mentors and coaches helpget the self-motivation conversations started, but when you are at pitchcompetitions or wining and dining that new client, you are there on your own.You need to learn to tap into your motivation reserves when you fumble, forgeta fact, or just plain don’t get the deal. But you have to keep knocking on doors.

Winners always find new ways to win. Are you doing what you need to elevateyour game?

4. Cheer for yourself. Have you ever seen Serena when she knows she’swinning? I swear she’s her biggest fan and supporter. Are you your biggestfan and supporter? We all need outside “rah-rah” folks, but nobody knowshow hard you are working better than you. You deserve to jump and shouteven if the win seems small – especially if the win seems small.

5. Realize you are human. The commentators on Williams’ game were verycomplimentary to the now 21 title holder, but they had no problem telling uswhere her game can still improve. If you haven’t made all the money in yourmarket, you still have plenty to learn. However, we all do. Remember thatyou are human and make sure you learn from your mistakes. You also want tostart delegating your weaknesses to someone who is stronger at that task.Winners adjust.

6. Stay in this moment. Williams’ goals are her own, but the press puts a lotof pressure on her to win. What’s her response? Winning each point as theycome and staying in this moment. We, as entrepreneurs, have plenty on ourplates, for sure, and you need to have goals for growth. However, don’tsquander the opportunity to love where you are right now. Make sure you aregiving yourself the encouragement, accolades, and even the resources youneed now. “Someday” will come, but you need to prepare for it today by beingthe best you can in this moment. Laser focus now will be the power play youneed for future success.

Champions make it look easy, but they didn’t get to the top without being willingpupils. Take these five lessons I’ve learned from Serena Williams and watchyour game go straight to the top.

Missy Taught Us:3 Lessons Entrepreneurs CanLearn When The Beat Drops




Super Bowl Monday is an honored and sacred time when fans gather to talkabout all things Super Bowl: the game, the plays, the winners, the losers, thecommercials—and the halftime show.

And in reflecting on the show as entrepreneurs, we should take everyopportunity to learn what we can from titans like Missy Elliot, who made asurprise appearance with headliner Katy Perry.

Elliot was quite the talk of the Super Bowl halftime show, and when theproverbial Missy beat dropped, so did the jaws of millions. Why? Well, thereasons have a few educational nuggets for business owners and enterprisingprofessionals.

1. Wow the crowd in ways they don’t expect. Katy Perry is a Radio Disneyfavorite, and most of us were expecting her first guest, Lenny Kravitz. Althoughthis combo was pretty hot performing Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl And I Liked It,”there weren’t any get-up-and-dance moments prior to Elliot hitting the stage. And that’s where we were wowed!

Elliot and Perry didn’t seem the likely Sunday-night combo. As entrepreneursyou have to keep with your current offerings but remember to collaborate or gooutside of the norm to really bring attention to your business or your products.Mix it up in your marketing and your approaches to service. Not every client willlike everything about your business, but they all want to be wowed.

2. Legends stay relevant. Elliot has a great, recognizable product. Her beatsare legendary, and when you hear them, you can’t help but know whose songis playing.




Many feel she hasn’t put out a hit in several years and thus shouldn’t have beena featured guest during the Katy Perry billed halftime show. But, guess what?Any beat drop associated with her, and we are all transported to a dance floor.

What you build today can make you millions for years to come if you work hardat being recognized time and time when people come in contact with yourproducts or see your logo. Build your brand to create a lasting memory andlegacy. In the long run that will make you much more than being anentrepreneur for the fast buck. Remember if #LegendsStayRelevant they haveto be relevant to start.

3. Put in the work. To make it to any big stage, you have to put in work. There were a lot of people who think Missy should have had her own halftimeshow. I agree, but I don’t take away from what she accomplished last night. She wasn’t selling or promoting anything; she was just there to do what shehas always done. However, not just anyone can get that call; she was there toignite the crowd and give the halftime show some street cred(ibility). Everyoneknows Missy is a professional with a great show and stage presence eventhough it has been a while since last we saw her. That’s because she puts inthe work. As entrepreneurs we also have to do just that so when the callcomes for us to be on the big stage we are ready no matter how far down theroad the call may come. Everyone wants to play the Super Bowl, but are youready to put in the hours, lose the sleep, make the investment to get there?

5 Smart Ways To Maximize Your Potential

For A Business Mentor




Smart hustlers know that success leaves clues. My biggest source ofbreadcrumbs has been my mentors. I've been fortunate to be mentored bymillionaires who knew and worked for billionaires, television personalities, anda host of others.

What I've learned and gained from those experiences has been so invaluablethat I now own three businesses which connect world-class entrepreneurs tomy community of up and coming entrepreneurs. When these world-classmentors are introduced to my community, there is inevitably someone whowants to be mentored by them one-on-one.

Being on fire about the advice someone gives during a podcast and takingspecific advice from them to better your business are two different things. Allmentors leave clues, and you need to find the one that is going to leave thebest clues for you.

Here's how to approach a business mentor so you can be the mentee theydon't know they need - yet.




1. Do Your ResearchOne of the ways I've found my mentors was offhandedly hearing their story. When I started blogging and met my mentor, I was on welfare. It turns outthat this mentor had been fired from a high-profile position. The fact that she'dturned what looked to be a failing into a victory was exactly what I needed. Other mentors might not have understood that, and they definitely couldn'thave shown me how to craft my story to inspire others.

Your business mentor needs to understand your past and your future plans tobe effective for you.

2. Invest in Time with ThemAttend conferences where they are speaking, read their books, attend theirwebinars, be in their space both virtually and physically. Become an activemember of their community. Before you ever approach someone for their help,help them by being in their audience. No matter how big someone is, theyinvestigate their community, and if you are an ad hoc leader within it, they willcertainly notice. So become a member of the Facebook group whocontributes, comment on their blog posts, volunteer at their events, share theirinterviews on social media. This investment of your time is a great way toshow them you are serious about what they have to share and what they arebuilding.




3. Offer Them Your ValueBefore renowned matchmaker and entrepreneur Paul C. Brunson became mymentor and business partner, I sent him countless ideas for his business. Ieven offered him my editing services. He didn't immediately use any of myideas or services; however, when the time came and he needed to add to hisbusiness, I was top of mind. When you offer on-target, relevant, thought outideas to your mentor you show two things: you are willing to put in the work tofind out what they need, and you have value to them. Mentors shouldn't beseen as a "give me your knowledge" type of deal. Going with your hand outmakes you like everyone else. Taking something of value to them makes youstand out.

4. Take Action on Their AdviceIf you really want to bring the "wow" factor when you are courting your mentor-to-be, use their advice. Showing that you are open and ready to do not justwork but the work they have outlined in their courses is a smart hustle move. You want to learn from this person and success leaves clues.
