Food Allergy Training for All Food Service Staff

30 Food Service staff were trained in Food Allergies . This was a joint effort of DESE and John Stalker Institute.

Children with Allergies

• Nurse notifies food service of all children with allergies

• Point of Sale cash registers identify each child that has an allergy

• Meetings are scheduled with parents at their child’s cafeteria and parents are given a tour of the facility with the child if requested

• Gluten free meals are now available five days a week at all elementary schools

Farm to School• Farm to School continues in the Milton School Food

Service Program • Purchased $75,000 of local produce this year from

DOD and from Brook wood farms and our local produce distributor

• Ordering from Department of Defense for second year

• Source local produce when possible

Brook Wood Farm

We met this February 2015 to plan our crops for next school year. We are hoping to plant cucumbers, peppers, squash, onions and asparagus for the 2015-2016 school year.

2014-2015 News

• Salad Toss at the high school every Tuesday and Thursday

• Chicken items – Whole muscle, tenders, patties and boneless wings

• Developed a chicken bid for the state of Massachusetts with the DESE for school year 2014-2015 and $25,000 of entitlement dollars will go toward chicken

• Milton Public Schools was selected for $11,200 worth of DOD (Dept. of Defense) produce from our USDA entitlement dollars. Next year we will be allowed to spend $22,400.

Nutrition for the AthleteThis year our interns met with the entire boys’ and girls’ cross country teams and discussed nutrition before the competition. They also met with the girls’ track team.

Hosted a large event on April 13th in the Copeland Field House for 300 athletes

Breakfast is offered every day in all six schools!

• Breakfast is $1.25 and is free for our free/reduced children• Offered in each school twenty minutes before school starts• Breakfast cart at the high school has helped us serve over 80 more

breakfasts per day with the grab and go feature; new breakfast cart now at Pierce School by the grade 7 wing and serving 70 more per day

• Mailed letters home to all free and reduced students encouraging them to eat breakfast at school

• Daily choices include whole grain muffins, whole grain cereals, egg sandwiches, whole grain pancakes or whole grain French toast, fresh fruit, 100% juice and milk

• This year we introduced hot cocoa at the high school to encourage more students to drink milk

• Placed information on all lunch menus, Superintendent’s email blast and principals’ newsletters and developed marketing materials for school breakfast week

The director and a few of our managers had the opportunity to attend the National Conference that was held at the Convention Center in July 2014. There were 1,200 vendors who showed their products.

• 13 staff members attended an all day session with our SFS company who provides all of our soap products and sanitation training.

• Each staff person will be certified in Sanitation and Safety for five years.
