The 4th Annual 500 Black Tuxedos We Got This, Inc. was held at the Hilton Hotel on the 5th floor Crystal ball room recently. Andre Lee Ellis, the founder of We Got This, Inc. and the creator of the Tuxedo event, gave out awards to young men and older men doing positive things in the community and for their aca- demic achievements and aware- ness. Ellis says by giving these young brothers a chance to put on a tux and parade in the streets of Milwaukee we open up their whole perspective of life. This year, Ellis expanded the event to include a pre-Tuxedo meet and greet night last Friday at Northcott Neighborhood House, 2460 N. 6th St. The young men got haircuts and heard words of inspiration from Ellis and other individuals. This year, Andre Lee Ellis’ ‘We Got This’ organization expanded its annual mentoring and formal dinner event to include two evening gatherings before the big day. In an effort to give participants more time together, Ellis invited young black men, mentors and their families to a “meet and greet” at Chic Underground Lounge, 770 N. Jefferson St., on Thursday, two days prior to the main event. Friday evening, the men and boys assembled at Northcott Neighborhood House, where Ellis and others offered in- spirational words and free hair- cuts. Saturday, the adult mentors and young men returned to Northcott, where they donned tuxedos and traveled together to the Hilton Milwaukee City Center downtown for photos and a for- mal dinner. Ellis said the idea for “500 Tuxedos” arose when the boys in his neighborhood expressed a desire to dress up and go out for an evening on the town, as they saw Ellis and his wife doing. Ellis’ goal is to build mentoring rela- tionships between black men and black teens and boys. In addition, Ellis seeks to expand the youths’ experience and raise their confi- dence and self-esteem. --Addi- tion text by Andrea Waxman, courtesy of Milwaukee Neigh- borhood News Service. MILWAUKEE COMMUNITY JOURNAL

The welfare of certainsegments of our com-munity will always pro-voke an emotionalresponse from me—people of color, women, children, the elderly—but for the most part, Iconsider myself to be afairly chilled spirit. In fact, 99% of the time I am

completely unbothered. I men-tion my calm temperament in anattempt to help those who willread this article to understandjust how enraged I must havebeen to consider throwing mylaptop across the room.I was on a late-night social

media prowl when I should havebeen working so I blame myself. As I was scrolling through mynewsfeed for what I am sure wasthe seventh time, I came acrossa video shared by one of my FBfriends.I let it play. Within the first 45

seconds, I could feel my bodygetting hot. Ignorantly, I let the

entire video play. By the third minute mark, I

couldn’t figure out if the tearsforming in my eyes were fromanger or sheer disgust. For al-most ten minutes, I watched aWhite woman shamelessly bashBlack women. The saddest part about her

tactless, fabricated and racist re-marks was the Black man whosat next to her and mockinglyencouraged her rant.A link to the YouTube version

of this video has been attachedfor your viewing pleasure, but ifyou are unsure that you will beable to exercise restraint and notsnap completely off, let me giveyou a quick synopsis and spareyou from wasting 10 minutes ofyour life.A link to the YouTube version

of this video has been attachedfor your viewing pleasure, but ifyou are unsure that you will beable to exercise restraint and notsnap off completely, let me giveyou a quick synopsis and spareyou from wasting 10 minutes ofyour life.According to this woman,

Black men prefer White women

because:● Black men can pull hair dur-

ing sex without the tracks slip-ping● They ride for their men and

Black women leave them whenthey are broke●We carry ourselves in a way

that turns the Black man off● We have 5 or 6 kids by mul-

tiple Baby daddies● We can’t pay our bills be-

cause we spend all of our moneyon weave●We don’t have father figures●All of the other races are tak-

ing overAs livid as I was, my anger

subdued when I realized that myfrustrations were misplaced. How could I possibly be mad atthis White woman? She wasspoon-fed a scoop of #alterna-tivefacts by a self-hating Blackman. If he, meaning the Blackman as a whole doesn’t honorus, how can we possible beupset that people outside of ourcommunity don’t either?Black women aren’t angry be-

cause the Black man decides todate women of other races. Byall means, do whatever servesyour heart. I can only speak for myself on

this matter, but there are someattractive White men in thisworld, and I for one am downwith the #SwirlLife. Ultimately, who a person de-

cides to love is their choice. The issue that we as Black

women face is the disappointingreality that too often when theBlack men does decided to datewomen of other nationalities, they feel compelled to bash anddemean us in the process. Leav-ing us to question, “How hard isit to love her without hating us?”This annoyingly ignorant cou-

ple serves as the public face forwhat has become a regular oc-currence: Black men demeaningBlack women. Daily, I comeacross social media statusesand meme posts from Blackmen saying ignorant sh*t like:Black girls, you better step

your game up because Whitegirls are taking over.White girls getting ass now.

Black women, they are comingfor your spot?Other women are often used

to threaten our security orshame us. When our bodies areheld in comparison to features ofother women, not only are wemade to feel like sexual objects, but his teaches those who arewatching the behavior of theBlack men that we as Blackwomen are nothing more than afat ass. The practice constantlyforces us to defend her self-worth and piece together ourdeminished self esteem.Latina girls are crazy, but sexy

as hell.The “angry black woman”

stereotype was created by theBM, and to date, it is a belief thatis perpetuated by the black man.Statements such as these sug-gest that it is only the BW who isunattractive and bitter when sheexpresses frustrations.“I want an exotic chick.”The Black woman a.k.a. the

mother of civilization is neverrevered as exotic. Society views everything and

everyone else as being moreglorious than African women. When the women that Blackmen praise look nothing like theirmothers, sisters, aunts, etc., itchallenges our understanding ofbeauty.True enough this blatantly dis-

respectful commentary is not re-flective of every Black man, buttragically it doesn’t dismiss thetruth. Black women are the onlygroup of people who are sub-jected to cruel and harsh chas-tisement by the men in theirnation. Whether you choose todate a sistah or not is neitherhere nor there, but for the sakeof building a strong nation ofwomen, Black men, is it toomuch to ask for a little courtesy?Never forget that it was and is

us who aide in your safekeeping, both publicly and privately, so-cially and politically. There has never been an at-

tack raged against you where wewere not on the front lines, readyand willing to give our lives foryours. Behind the scenes, moth-ers, aunts, sisters, and wives arepushing forces behind the vi-sions and dreams of YOU.You will never understand the

devastation we experiencewatching the Black man de-grade, demean, and destroy theself-esteem and the sanctity ofthe Black woman while praisingand glorifying women of otherraces. This is painful. So, yes Black

man, the black woman may ap-pear to be angry, but considerthis, maybe she is scared. Maybe her hard exterior is the

only shield she has to protect herin a world where she is alwaysunder fire. So the next time you are con-

sidering making a commentabout us that will contribute tothe madness, replace thosewords with a “thank you.” Neverforget that without the Blackwoman, there would be no you.Jazz Keyes is a community ac-

The 10 MostPressing Issues Facing21st CenturyAfrican Americans African Americans stillface a litany of problemsin the 21st century. De-spite gains since the endof World War II, espe-cially the eradication ofracial segregation(known as Jim Crow),serious economic, socialand political issues per-sist in the community.

Brown vs. Board of Educa-tion began the change in 1954.This Supreme Court ruling pro-nounced racially segregatedschools unconstitutional. Un-happy with the subsequentslow pace of change,African Americans took to

the streets from the late-1950sthrough the 1960s, led by Mar-tin Luther, King, Jr, StokelyCarmichael, Ella Baker, FannieLou Hamer and others. By thetime of Dr. King’s assassina-tion in 1968, the Black PowerMovements had emerged, call-ing for immediate political andeconomic equality. The government responded

partly by creating affirmativeactions plans provide some inthe race with a leg up in col-lege admissions, employmentand other life situations. However, the nation turned

away from these initiatives inwhat many refer today as a“post-racial America,” whererace does not matter suppos-edly.

Yet, the election of BarackObama, and other symbols ofcolorblindness, have notsolved these ten problems thatstill plague African Americansin the 21st Century.1. Mass IncarcerationThe United States has the

highest incarceration rate inthe world, with over 1.6 milliondwelling in prisons. Of thisnumber, a disportionateamount are African Americans.who are so prevalent in thisprison population that on anyday, a male with no degree ismore likely in jail than working. Many legal scholars refer to

this high incarceration rateamong African Americans as anew form of Jim Crow segre-gation, in which minoritieshead from high school toprison on a veritable pipeline.2. Gang ViolenceIn the wake of the Black

Power movement arose theera of inner-city gangs. Theseviolent groups helped fill aleadership void among a dis-possessed people. Today, criminal gangs have spreadthroughout the country andinto the prisons.3. PovertyOne central goal of the Civil

Rights Movement was blackeconomic empowerment. Nev-ertheless, millions of AfricanAmericans still live mired inpoverty, susceptible to poor liv-ing conditions in underservedinner-cities.4. Drugs

The War on Drugs, whichbegan in the 1980s, is a lead-ing cause of the high rate of in-carceration among AfricanAmericans, especially males.5. Voting RightsThe 2000 election in Florida

highlighted the belief thatAfrican Americans still faceproblems voting, despite the1965 Voting Rights Act. Nu-merous claims of being askedfor identification, confused withconvicted felons, and otherdiscrepancies led to calls forreform.6. EducationIn the 1980s, affirmative ac-

tion had largely equalized col-lege attendance among AfricanAmericans and others. Sincethen, attacks on this policy, which provided some minori-ties with preference in admis-sions, has eviscerated thesegains in certain states.7. Single Parent House-

holdsToday, with African American

males disproportionately incar-cerated, many single womenface the burden of raising chil-dren alone.8. Unemploymentthe African American unem-

ployment rate generally dou-bles that of the population as awhole, demonstrating pro-nounced difficulties providingfor families and accumulatingwealth.9. Police Brutality

A slew of high-profile, ques-tionable deaths involving po-lice have led to a “Black LivesMatter” movement, the criminalindictment of some officers andurban riots.10. Systemic Racismlooming large over all prob-

lems in the African Americancommunity is systemic racism.First enunciated in detail bypolitical scientist CharlesHamilton and activist StokelyCarmichael, this term refers tothe whole edifice of institu-tions, public and private, thatmake life in the country harshfor many minorities. Systemicracism differs from personalprejudice in that it remains im-perceptible to many.Millennials face a host of

problems, chiefly among them, the ten listed here. Neverthe-less, all is not lost. AfricanAmericans have overcomeslavery and legalized racism tobeing able to help elect onefrom the group as Com-mander-in-Chief of the mostpowerful nation in world his-tory. When viewed in this context,

the future will probably be oneof continued progress by apeople who have proven theirresilience and strength beyondany doubt. www.prb.orgnewjimcrow.com s-usih.orgabcnews.go.com www.usato-day.com
