    Forum Building

    Address

    Avinguda Diagonal 108019 BarcelonaSpainhttp://www.barcelona2004.org/

The Forum Building is a triangular measuring 180 meters on eachside and 25 meters in height, located within the triangle formedby the surrounding streets. It is considered by some to be an iconof the "New Barcelona ". However, local opinion on its aestheticand functional merits is deeply divided. It was the symbol of thecontroversial 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures and the seriousflaws that arose during its construction were widely covered inboth the Spanish national and foreign press. It has lain emptysince the Forum and is beginning to show marked deterioration. The building is structured around an auditorium with a capacityto hold 3,200 people. The seating is below the Forum Plaza level. The upper part is suspended from the triangular superstructuremeasuring 180 meters per side that covers the plaza, and rests on17 pillars. From it, the exhibit hall and the roof of the auditoriumare suspended. The exhibition hall covers nearly 5,000 m2.

    How to get there

By tram: Take tram No. 11, bound for Aesch, at the Swiss RailwayStation SBB to "Schaulager" stop (approx. 10 min.).

    Schaulager

    Address

    Ruchfeldstrasse 19CH-4142 BaselSwitzerlandhttp://www.schaulager.org/

The Schaulager ('viewing warehouse') is neither museum nortraditional warehouse. It keeps the Emanuel Hoffmann collectionin optimal condition and is primarily accessible for specialists:conservators, curators, researchers etc. The heavy outer wall isbuilt up in layers and its outer surface scratched, exposing thepebbles excavated on site. This material is not only a visualexpression of weight and storage but also, as a result of its greatinertia, an essential factor in the interior climate control. On oneside the box is somewhat indented, creating a forecourt, so thatthe entrance side is visible from great distance. It appears to beguarded by a small building with a gabled roof. The courtyard-likespace radiates urbanism and publicness. Schaulager is thus notsimply an anonymous box on the urban periphery, but rather aplace that is active and self-confident, expanding the publicdimension of the city of Basel to the south, towards the new

    district of Dreispitz/Mnchenstein.

The CCIB andthe neighboring building Forum Auditorium (by Swiss architectsHerzog and De Meuron), are linked to each other by a20-meter-wide underground walkway. Mateo 'explains': I havegone back to loving the precision of iron: normal, but monstrous, banal but not domestic, superhuman. The mega structure is seenproudly in the East faade, opposite the elegant neighbouring

triangle. The bones are covered in the rest of the building.

The former Bankside power station consists of a huge turbinehall, a thirty-five m high and 152 m long entrance area withramped access, as well as a display space for very largesculptural projects. Parallel to it the boiler house, where now thegalleries are housed. Above the original roofline of the powerstation the then relatively little known Swiss architects added atwo-storey glass penthouse; the lightbeam. This houses acaf-restaurant with stunning views of the river and the City, andthe lower a membersroom with terraces on both sides of thebuilding. The chimney was capped by a coloured light featuredesigned by the artist Michael Craig-Martin, known as the SwissLight. The redevelopment of the redundant Bankside PowerStation is a key to the regeneration of the area. Tate Modern isthe national gallery of international modern art. Located inLondon, it is one of the family of 4 Tate galleries which display

    selections from the Tate Collection.

With the change of use of the power station, a formerlyinaccessible terrain was turned into a place that is now used bythe public. Zurich based Vogt Landschaftsarchitekten designedthe outside space next to the Tate Modern (redesigned for reuseby Herzog and De Meuron). They created a series of gardens withbirch trees and a square: The birch trees create a spatialcomplexity of confinement and expansiveness and create thefamiliar picture of an alluvial forest. At the same time, thebirches are pioneer trees on urban and industrial vacant lots. Thegroups of foreign trees, with their different coloured barks andirregular placement, contradict the usual connotation of thistree. The design of the various types of gardens is part of atypical London tradition of urban gardens. It is neither a publicsquare nor a private garden but a hybrid: an English square.

    Folding Landscape

    Address

The Laban dance school is located in Deptford, an industrialdistrict to the southwest of London. The design of the garden infront of the building by Herzog and De Meuron reflects theinterior of the building, which is characterized by ramps. The wayto the main entrance of the building leads in a slightly zigzagcourse through a hilly landscape created by bending and folding. The sloping lawns and geometric hills form a lively landscape. Asin a natural landscape, chains of hills and dales form extremelydissimilar situations that can be variously used, for example thelawn steps as a performance room in the sense of anamphitheatre. The modeling of the ground also made it possibleto dispose of the existing, contaminated soil on the building sideof the site at a reasonable cost. The decision to refrain fromplanting trees was based on ecological considerations: a rarebird, the black redstart, would otherwise have been hunted by

birds of prey lurking in the trees.

REHABBasel is a privately run rehabilitation clinic for patients withspinal-cord or brain injuries, they can stay here up to 18 months. It appears residential and natural, though not with a funky,down-home earthiness, but crispy modern. Here, oak, pine, larch, and ironwoods enclose and screen exterior walls, and arectilinear plan brings daylight and landscape into its precinctsthrough courtyards, grassy roofs, glazed walls, upper-level decks, and skylights. The double and single rooms have daylight fromabove and an outside balcony. The indoor swimming pool offersviews into the sky from a pyramid-like dome above. The floorsare very wide, open giving wheelchair-bound patients a sense ofautonomy. Almost a place where anyone would like to live.

Simple but yet complex, one of the best works by this Swisspractice can be found in St. Gallen. The recipe is simple: take asimple form of building and give it a nice skin. Using a series ofrepetitive modules, the architects create a faade thatdecomposes the site, the context, the surroundings. Thedifferent angle of each module creates this effect, which isemphasized by the beautiful "savage" garden that neighbours thebuildings.

It is theseearly buildings with great constraints that test an architectstalent for original solutions to often ordinary and utilitariancommissions. In the case of Jacques Herzog and Pierre deMeuron, the railroad signal box was such a project. Theytransformed a nondescript structure in a railroad yard into adramatic and artistic work of industrial architecture, captivatingboth by day and night."

When the Swiss decided against joining theEU economic area in a referendum held in 1992, it becamenecessary for Ricola to set up a sales company in the EU and tobuild a hall for Ricola Europe in neighbouring France. This hallwas built in a few months in 1995. It is situated on the peripheryof Mulhouse, on the west bank of the Rhine-Rhne Canal, facingBrunstatt. It is a simple building, 60 m long, 30 m wide an 8 mhigh. The roof projects outwards and slightly upwards for 8 m oneach of the two long sides. It creates large, protected areas, those facing into the yard being used for loading and unloadingthe trucks, and those facing a small park for rest periods. Here, the roof is of a material which allows the light through, so thatthese areas are bathed in soft light. (text from website Ricola)

This is a mechanized warehouse had to be built for herbs andherbal throat drops. The structure appears to rest on ribs whichcan be seen protruding below the bottom-most of these layers. They are attached to the slab which has been cast directly on therocky ground forming the foundation of the warehouse. Becauseof the open structure which is formed, the yellow colour of thethermal insulation can be detected between the panels. The onlyexception to this is on the side exposed to the weather, where asilver foil offers additional protection against moisture. Thearchitects have given various reasons for the shape of the shell. All of them have to do with the stacking of materials: planks piledto dry, or panels of cement, or even the shelves of the new hall.In images like these, which they called upon when creating thedesign, the function and construction of the warehouse arerendered congruent in a complex fashion. Haute couture and star architecture have grown to understandeach other rather well in the recent years. Major fashion brandsdistinguish themselves by inviting world leading architects toindulge themselves in the design of flagshipstores andextravagant showrooms. The highest density worldwide of suchstate of the art showpieces can arguably be found on and aroundTokyo's Omotesando. One of the most impressive contributions tothis phenomenon is the Prada 'epicenter'. This 33 meter highbuilding has a faade like a membrane which is built out of wedgeshaped elements that frame flat, convex and concave windows. These element also form the outer structure of the building.Closed horizontal bracings not only make the frame rigid, but alsohouse the more private dressing rooms within this transparentbuilding. Everything about the building tells us that money wasnot an issue. But perhaps the most costly design choice of all was

to leave a large part of the expensive plot un-built.

The 'Wohn- und Geschftshaus am Herrnstrasse' in the old centrehas a strong interaction between opening and closing. Everysecond element in the floor-to-ceiling glazing is a sliding door. The anthracite-brown galvanized window frames give the innerlayout a maximum flexibility - and together with the wave-shapedsunscreens, the building has an ever changing appearanceaccording to the weather. On the roof top an intimate woodenpenthouse is placed, with large windowsills, made out of oakwood. The underground car park can be reached by an auto lift.

    Address

In the 20th century this area used to be Munich's central bankingdistrict. As the various banks merged into one it was suddenlyfound that the entire area belonged to one entity. So in 1998 theHypoVereinsbank decided to move their offices elsewhere andtransform the remaining buildings into a modern center forshopping, restaurants & cafes, art galleries (among which theKunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung), office space, and residentialapartments and public art. This network of passages and innercourtyards is an absolute pleasure to stroll through. The FnfHfe is literally an area of five connected courtyards. Everysection has its own character. In one area there are giant ivies -over 10 meters long - hanging from the ceiling. Another courtyardis actually a hortus conclusus. Many other designers contributedto the gesamtkunstwerk.

    Aargauer Kunsthaus Extension

    Address

    Aargauerplatz 15001 AarauSwitzerlandhttp://www.ag.ch

The Aargauer Kunsthaus, originally built in 1959, becameincreasingly unable to cope with the constant expansion of thecollection and the dynamism of the exhibition programme. Afterseveral years of planning, therefore, a unique extension designedby internationally renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron andthe artist Rmy Zaugg was opened in 2003. The buildingrepresents a harmonious blend of old and new, a mixture of parkand city, resulting from a careful analysis of the urbansurroundings. While the entrance area and foyer, with the twowinding staircases, make a spectacular, open and invitingimpact, the architecture of the exhibition rooms recedes into thebackground, so to speak. The Aargauer Kunsthaus has a total of3000 square metres of exhibition space (twice as much as beforethe extension) at its disposal in bright spacious rooms (text fomproject's website).

With a simple volume and a gabled roof, Herzog & de Meuronhave overdrawn the situation to a certain extent. The typecorresponds to what is generally understood to be a 'house', yetthe building is nevertheless different. The exterior form could bedescribed as the prototype of a house, as the architectsthemselves claim, yet it also plays with a children's drawing. Onthe other hand, it evokes the impression of a view of a monolithicblock, albeit a raised one, floating above the ground. Thecantilevered floors, which project from the outside of thebuilding, appear like a presentation tableau, raising the housewhile distancing it from its context. The building also producesthe impression of being a compact volume because roofoverhangs are missing. In stark contrast to the grey exterior, there are soft colours inside and the lapidary spatial concept iscountered by the unusual access from below and the high space

    above the stairs.

A new building has been added to the Vitra Campus. TheVitraHaus lies in close proximity to the Swiss border and thefurniture manufacture's Basel headquarters. Here the Vitra HomeCollection is shown. The furnishings and objects are arranged in avariety of settings for both living and working: classics by Charles& Ray Eames, George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi, Jean Prouv andVerner Panton are combined with contemporary designs byMaarten Van Severen, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, AntonioCitterio, Hella Jongerius, Jasper Morrison and others. With theVitraHaus, there is a sense of "homecoming" not only with regardto the architects, but also in the building concept. Herzog & deMeuron make reference to the archetypal form of the gabledhouse, which is found in residential structures around the globe. They have stretched this basic form and combined a series of"houses" in an intersecting stack.
