Dr. Pasquarello challenges Academy members to become involved 2008 was a challenging year for everyone. The US economy continues to struggle as we attempt to recover from the current recession. Medical organizations have not been immune to this recession and we are all feeling the effects of the economic downturn. To add to the financial strain, the Academy has been in a state of transition over the past year.

In May of 2008, Steve Noone retired after 16 years of service as the Academy’s Executive Director. During his term, the Academy went from a small mom and pop organization to a more organized group with a long view of its role in the profession. Discipline and strict budgeting, coupled with the large influx of attendees at CME programs gave us a pe-riod of mild financial success. Since the closure of the practice track for board certification, attendance at our CME pro-grams has decreased significantly. Combined with an overall decrease in travel, spending and financial contributions by members, the Academy again finds itself in challenging times. Change is always difficult and even more so during economic uncertainty.

Over the past 10 months, our new Executive Director, Harriet O’Conner has been directing our course and challenging us to push forward. Restructuring of the Academy staff has created opportunities and frustrations. New technology in the AAO office, an updated website and new ways to provide CME have all positioned the Academy to move forward. The Board of Trustees, Board of Governors and Committee Chairs have all stepped up to help accommodate these changes.

Advocacy, research and education are the key elements in the Academy mission. I believe there are three compo-nents necessary to accomplish that mission: communication, cooperation and participation.

This includes communication between the AAO and its members, between the members and committees and the Board of Trustees, between the AAO and AOA and between the AAO and the public. Cooperation with AOA, our com-ponent societies, other specialty colleges and state osteopathic associations will help promote our mission. I need to ask all of you for your participation by contributing time, money and experience to the Academy. This is OUR Academy and we all need to be involved to make it successful.

I’m always impressed when I see enthusiasm and support from Academy members; DOs and osteopathic students supporting our organization. We all know what it is to be an osteopathic physician with the range of professional and personal joys and stresses that go along with it. But I’ve been even more amazed at the commitment of folks who are not osteopathic physicians, but support us so fervently and promote and defend this profession more than most of its members. We are all truly blessed to have such a wonderful, committed and professional staff supporting us and grind-ing out the day-to-day work that needs to get done to keep our organization alive.

As the Academy continues to evolve in its current transition, I’d like to see an evolution in not only structure and ser-vices, but also in its relationships. I’m committed to continuing to work on relationships with the AOA, other specialty organizations, our component societies and all of our members to enhance communication, cooperation and participa-tion.

With all of the stresses and challenges that face us, there is some good news. Difficult times bring us closer together and sharing the load will foster respect and appreciation. Being able to meet challenges together will give us all a sense of ownership that will improve our communication and strengthen the Academy.

When we leave here after this conference and go back to our own little piece of the world, let’s remember a few things: You can always call if you need help or advice. We may not always see eye to eye, but we must always respect and support each other. There’s a lot to do, so we all have to chip in and get our hands dirty.

I pledge to give my best effort over the next year and look forward to representing the Academy as your President.

Board Approves 5% Dues Adjustment The AAO Board of Trustees approved a modest adjustment in membership dues for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. The in-crease is expected to generate additional revenue to offset the anticipated rise in operational expenses and assist the Trustees in maintaining a balanced budget for the next year. The current rate has been in effect for two years. The new dues figures are listed in bold type below (2008-2009 rate in parentheses):

$248 (236) Active and Associate Members $188 (179) Joint/Active Members $176 (168) 2nd Year in Practice $88 (84) 1st Year in Practice $274 (261) International Members $38 (36) Interns and Residents

Article II, Dues and Fees, Section I of the AAO Bylaws authorizes the Trustees to “increase annual dues at no more than five (5) percent on an annual basis. Increases in dues higher than five (5) percent must be approved by the mem-bership at the Annual Meeting of the Membership. Fees for programs, materials, and services shall be set by the Board of Trustees to cover anticipated costs and expenses.”

Three Receive HLM Award

The AAO Board of Governors selected three members to receive the Academy’s Honorary Life Membership, the maxi-mum permitted by the AAO Bylaws. The 2009 recipients are Richard M. Bachrach DO; Andrew Lovy, DO; and Don-ald E. Woods, DO, FAAO.

The Governors may select recipients who have exhibited outstanding service to the osteopathic profession in any two of the following categories: (a) contribution to osteopathic literature; (b) development or teaching of osteopathic princi-ples and practice; (c) service in osteopathic health care in the community; and (d) service in the fields of osteopathic education. Governors also may consider active members who have been in practice 50 years and have been mem-bers of the Academy for 25 consecutive years.

Dr. Bachrach joined his father, Dr. David Bachrach, in a general osteopathic practice after completing his internship in Philadelphia. Through Dr. D. Bachrach, whose practice included many major theatrical and motion picture actors, writ-ers, and directors; Dr. R. Bachrach was introduced to the world of show-biz medicine. In particular, in part because they were the most impecunious of performers, and certainly because they were the most resistant to treatment, Dr. R. Bachrach wound up taking care of the dancers, learning sports medicine the hard way. He immersed himself in the dance world, becoming one of the pioneers in the newly developing field of dance medicine. He became the ex-officio company physician to the cast of “West Side Story.” He continued in a similar capacity with many Broadway musical casts, the New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre dancers, even touring the Soviet Union with ballet compa-nies. Dr. R. Bachrach is president and medical director of the Center for Sports and Osteopathic Medicine in New York City. He is a Fellow of the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine, the American Osteopathic Academy of Sclerotherapeutic Pain Management, the American Medical Academy of Acupuncture, and the American Back Society. His scientific papers have appeared in many medical textbooks and journals, and he has lectured on dance medicine and back pain in the US, Canada, Great Britain, Amsterdam and Brazil.

Dr. Lovy is a 1962 graduate of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He served his internship at Mt. Clemens (MI) General Hospital and completed his residency in psychiatry at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, GA. AAO Members in the News Humayun Chaudhry, DO, the Commissioner of Health in Suffolk County, NY, was interviewed on the New York ABC Affiliate WABC-TV addressing a recent outbreak of whooping cough among elementary-aged school children on Long Island. Although many children receive vaccinations for whooping cough, otherwise known as pertussis, sometimes the vaccinations can lose effectiveness, as they seem to have done in the infected children. No children have died from the disease, which can be fatal in infants. Watch Dr. Chaudhry’s public health announcement online. Dr. Chaudhry is the President of both the American College of Osteopathic Internists and the Association of Osteopathic Directors and Medical Educators.

Debriefing on TCOM Hearing

AOA President Carlo J. DiMarco, DO, represented the AOA at a public hearing on the proposal to establish an MD school at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM). Those in favor of the “MD option” assert it would produce more primary care doctors and make TCOM a top-ten research institution. Dr DiMarco refuted these arguments by pointing out that 73% of the TCOM DOs in Texas practice primary care compared to only 31% of MD graduates in Texas and that the creation of the TCOM Osteopathic Research Center in 2002 also has already established the University as a leading research institute. Gib Lewis, former Speaker of the Texas House, opposes the MD option and told the Board of Regents that there is no more money for another school, hence the MD option would only dilute TCOM’s funds, and the Medical Student Government Association declared that it was opposed to the MD option. AOA Trustee Mark A. Baker, DO, was also in attendance and remarked on the unintended con-sequences of the “MD option.” The Board of Regents concluded the open hearing by asking Drs. Ransom and Peska to study how the MD option proposal would be implemented and report back this fall.

Special Events at 2009 AAO Convocation Guy A. DeFeo, DO was presented with the A.T. Still Portrait on March 15, 2009 in appreciation for his service to the Academy this past year.

AOA President DiMarco met with the AAO Board of Trustees on March 25, 2009 to discuss his OGME Initiative, in-cluding recent efforts to save OGME in Oklahoma and to protect the DO degree and training in Texas.

John B. Crosby, JD spoke at the Thursday, March 26th Annual Business Meeting of the AAO and was presented a Ram statue.

AOA President DiMarco and John Crosby addressed the Undergraduate American Academy of Osteopathy (UAAO) Annual Convocation, on March 27 in Little Rock, AR, regarding President DiMarco’s OGME Initiative, including recent efforts to save OGME in Oklahoma and his testimony noted above to protect the DO degree and training in Texas.

Free CME Program on Tobacco Treatment

Last year, the AOA endorsed the US Public Health Service’s (USPHS) 2008 Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence. The AOA’s endorsement helped raise the profile of the Nation’s most deadly cause of disease and death, tobacco use. The USPHS has updated their Guidelines for 2009 to synthesize over 8,700 peer-reviewed articles and provide updated recommendations on successful treatment of tobacco dependence. The full 2009 Guidelines are available online. In addition, Medscape is offering a free one-hour CME program based on the guidelines. Get information on the CME program online.

New Osteopathic Research Tool

The Osteopathic Heritage Foundations (OHF) have launched www.osteopathicheritage.org to help osteopathic research-ers and advocates find tools to help them advance their causes. The new Web site offers online enhancements to facili-tate the grant-making process and a searchable grantee database osteopathic family members can use to find available grants. The OHF recognizes osteopathic graduate medical education as one of its most important priorities. To learn more about current funding priorities and sign-up to receive periodic email updates, please visit the OHF Web site.

Osteopathic International Alliance Met in Little Rock

The OIA Board Meeting commenced March 27, 2009 in Little Rock, AR, in conjunction with the American Academy of Osteopathy’s Annual Convocation. International osteopathic leaders on the OIA Board of Directors discussed member-ship applications from several countries; received an update on the World Health Organizations’ Guidelines on basic safety and training in osteopathy, which is under development with input from the OIA and the AOA; and met with leaders of the World Osteopathic Health Organization to discuss merger and collaboration opportunities with them.
