Earlier, the provincial government of Bukidnon through Calingasan shelled out P8,000 for the repair of drainage canal, and released P450,000 as counterpart fund for the construction of barangay’s admin building (Phase 1).

Canete also extends his gratitude to Calingasan for making the Fr. Neri Satur Twin’s Mountains as tourist destination.

With the opening of the new tourist destination, the barangay official is opti-mistic that it will pave the way for the construction of farm-to-market roads.

MALAYBALAY City––The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) shined during the 16th annual National Social Welfare and Develop-ment (NSWD) forum and General Assembly held at Davao City from April 24 to 27, 2012.

PSWD officer and Na-tional President of As-sociation of Local Social Welfare and Development Officers of the Philippines Inc. (ALSWDOPI) Arsenio Alagenio said the assembly was aimed enhancing the skills of social workers in regard to social protection,

THE AQUINO government vowed to protect journalists in the country as the world celebrates the World Press Freedom Day Thursday, May 3.

Malacanang spokesper-son Edwin Lacierda said the Philippines is one of the freest in Asia and the government have not cur-tailed or have an intention to curtail press freedom in the country.

‘The press is a necessary part of nation building, so it is something that we would always encourage,’ Lacierda added.

Lacierda also assured of the government’s commit-ment to ensure the safety of the members of the press while exercising their pro-fession.

Early this week, Mala-canang condemned the killing of a broadcast jour-

Congressman Rufus Rodriguez (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro City) questions officials of the Philippine National Construction Corp regarding House Resolution 826. Rep Rodriguez filed the Resolution calling for an inquiry into the alleged the non-payment by the Philippine National Construction Corp. to the national government thru the Toll Regulatory Board of the sum of around P4 billion representing unpaid concession fees. Also in photo is Committee on Good Government Chairman Rep. Jerry Treñas.

During the assembly, Alagenio said each par-ticipant was able to share experiences in regard to social works.

On one hand, Bukidnon Governor Alex Calingasan said that for social work-ers to succeed they should into the needs of the poor especially on the aspect of livelihood.

The recent assembly car-ries the theme: “Enhancing Resilient Communities: A Challenge and Opportunity to Local Social Welfare and Development Stakeholders.”

Rommel Palma, 31, a reporter for radio station dxMC Bombo Radyo-Ko-ronadal, died from four gunshot wounds at the back and the neck after he was attacked by motorcycle-riding gunmen.

Every May 3, the world celebrates the World Press Freedom Day to revitalize the fundamental principles of press freedom, to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks as well as to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives doing their jobs.

The UN General Assem-bly in 1993 proclaimed May 3 as World Press Freedom Day by following a recom-mendation adopted at the 26th session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991.

It serves as an occasion to inform citizens of viola-

tions of press freedom - a reminder that in dozens of countries around the world, publications are censored, fined, suspended and closed down, while journalists, editors and publishers are harassed, attacked, detained and even murdered.

The celebration also serves as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom. It is also a day of reflection among media professionals on is-sues of press freedom and professional ethics. CDLACIERDA

OZAMIZ City––Policemen here planted some 400 Ban-yan trees as part of their initiative and commitment for environmental protection and preservation.

Likewise, the tree-planting activity formed part of the Philippine National Police (PNP)’s drive dubbed as “Pulis Makakalikasan: 10 Milyong Puno Pamana sa Kinabukasan.”

On Earth Day celebration, the Ozamiz City Police Office joined the local government of Ozamiz City in the celebration and planted trees not because of com-plimenting the invitation of the city but in adherance to its own commitment on preserving and protecting the environment for the future.

In support to PNoy’s national greening program, the PNP has earlier committed to establish nursery within its area of jurisdiction––and vowed to plant the trees to boost its “Pulis Makakalikasan” movement.

Acting Provincial Director Sr. Supt Raul Benitez designated every PCR unit to lead and be joined by other units to be part of the movement and established its own nurseries.

The said training is one of the commit-ments of DA Secretary Proceso J. Alcala dur-ing his visit in Re-gion 10 in February to extend assistance to the typhoon Sendong victims, particularly to farmers and fish-erfolks.

Dr. Eduardo Pit of the DA Rice Pro-gram informed that the training aims to teach the participants how to choose appro-priate fertilizers and know the right amount to be applied.

Mr. Bethoveen delos

Determine soil NPK level the easy way, says aggie dept

Reyes of the Regional Soil Testing Labora-tory (RSTL) of the Department of Agri-culture explained that a complete soil test kit (STK) is a comprehen-sive outfit suitable for field use.

Fast and easy, it only takes a few min-utes to know the level of fertilizer needed.

Soil testing can be done right in the field and results are ob-tained within the hour.

It is a useful tool to farmers and extension workers who, often times, need immediate

answer to the ques-tion of what kind and amount of fertilizer to use for a crop grown in a particular soil.

All they have to do is put a little amount of soil sample into the test tube, pour in solu-tion, shake and watch the color develop.

A soil test is the analysis of nutrient content of the soil sample whether low, medium or high in available nitrogen, phosphorus, potas-sium, and contami-nant content and other characterisics such as pH level.

The participants were advised to follow the table of fertilizer recommendation for different crops to find the right amount and kind of fertilizer to use.

The RSTL is tasked to perform soil testing analysis.

Cl ients have to bring their haf kilo composite soil sam-ple for STK analysis, pay the amount of P 100.00 9and the result would come out the following day.

The participants were coached the proper way of collect-ing soil sample and the procedure to analyze soil using the (STK) method by themselves since they were given soil test kit in view of the fact that they are far from the city proper.

It is expected that as farmer-leaders they will share and teach other farmers of what they have learned to sustain farming activi-

ties in their locality. The far mers

through PAILIG Foun-dation have availed of 5 STK for free.

The other farmer groups are willing to have improvised kit and they will have access for reagent refill through the office of the city agriculture of Iligan.

In addition the par-ticipants were also im-parted of the natural farming technology system, the natural method of farming for a productive, progres-sive and sustainable farming system.

C i t y C ou n c i l or Larazabal, Commit-tee Chair on Agricul-ture in his message believed that said training is timely for the farmers to plant

suitable crops in their areas and to minimize unproductive crops.

Part icipants are from non govern-ment organizations led by Alliance of Sus-tainable Agriculture Practitioner (ASAP), Sumpay Mindanao and PAILIG; lead-ers of people’s orga-nizations; farmers organizations; and the women’s group, representing the five hinterland barangays of Iligan City - Pan-uriganan, Kalilangan, Rogongon, Dulag, and Lanipao.

The training was in collaboration with the local government unit of Iligan City through the Office of the City Agriculture, DA’s Rice program and RSTL.

THINK a minute.They say : “Love i s

blind.” So when a guy’s in love with a girl and he wants his family to like her, do you think he’ll say anything bad about her to his family?

Would he tell his parents that his girlfriend is stupid? Or that she’s lazy and can’t cook? I seriously doubt it!

It’s just the opposite. He points out only his

girlfriend’s good qualities to his family.

You see, when you’re in love, you’re blind to your boyfriend’s or girlfriend’s weaknesses. And even if you do see their faults, it just doesn’t seem that bad or important. Because after all…you’re in love with that person!

You know whom else we need to love like that? It’s our own children. Do you realize that our kids believe the things we say

The power of positive talking

to them? So when you and I tell

our children that they’re stupid, lazy, or bad, they really believe it!

With our words, we parents can actually kill any self-confidence our kids have!

Because if a child be-lieves us when we tell them that he or she is dumb, weak, or can’t do anything well, then they won’t. That’s just what they’ll become!

One of the most impor-tant gifts we can give our kids is to love them without conditions and help them

believe in themselves.Since whatever our kids

believe about themselves is what they are going to become!

So when you and I tell our kids that they’re smart, good with their hands, or that they’re good-looking.

When we tell them that we will always love them no matter what they do or how they look.

When we tell them their good points every day.

We’re not giving our kids a big head or spoiling them! Rather, we’re build-ing their self-confidence

and preparing them to suc-ceed and handle life well!

You see, if you want your children to succeed, then it’s your job to give them a chance!

It’s your responsibility to make your kids believe in themselves and what God designed them to be. And for you to succeed in doing that as their parent, you must use the power of positive talk!

You must encourage your children and building their confidence every day by the way you talk to them.

So Dad and Mom, if you haven’t already, won’t you ask Jesus to forgive you and start changing you into a new person and parent to your kids?

It’s only then you can help them start becoming what God made them to be and fulfill His plan for their lives.

Inflation and minimum wages

Can Normin sustain itself?

THE PURCHASING power of the cur-rency should dictate fair adjustment of salaries and wages of workers – both in private and public. It should be the basis of computing daily minimum wage - not on projected profits of the capitalist economy.

If we are to base our computa-tion of the daily minimum wage on possible profits, we cannot expect fair deal since the capitalist system always project a lackluster market. However, it would make a difference if we have to base our computation on the currency’s purchasing power. In this context, adjustment in daily minimum wage is focused on the currency’s capability to acquire basic goods.

In order to arrive at an acceptable daily minimum wage, government planners should implement policies that would scale down prices of basic commodities. Government should exert efforts to bring down prices of commodities to an acceptable level. Acceptable level means a lowly worker could afford to buy a kilo of rice and a kilo of fish for daily subsistence. Workers would also be able to buy basic commodities like milk, sugar, and oil with little savings left.

At present, the daily minimum wage of lowly workers is barely enough to feed a single mouth. The current daily minimum wage could leave a family of five hungry and malnourished. Savings for medication is impossible. No wonder, hundreds of patients lined up in government-owned hospitals hoping to get free medication. No won-der, hundreds asked free government coffins every day.

In other countries, like Vietnam, Thailand and

China, there daily minimum wage is lower than the daily minimum wage in the Philippines. Government planners always invoke the difference of the minimum wage in these countries as pretext to forego plans for wage adjustment.

There are no economic secrets in countries where their daily minimum wage is low. These countries are simply implementing economic policies that maintain prices of basic commodities substantially affordable to workers receiving daily minimum wage. Thus, prices of goods in these countries are always affordable to their citizens. Their daily minimum wage is enough for a family to enjoy comfort and healthy living.

In the Philippines, economic policies directing at lowering and holding prices of goods at an affordable level is impossible. The government has no clear-cut economic policies that protect minimum wage earn-ers as against prices of basic commodities. What the Philippine government is doing is merely inflationary projections -no more, no less. Government planners are telling minimum wage earners that they are trying to hold inflationary rates at bay. Bull!

By the way, inflation is the overall upward price move-ment of goods and services in an economy. It is dictated by increase in the supply of money and is normally measure by the Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index. Thus, if the cost of goods and services go up, the value of the currency (Peso) falls down since a minimum wage earner could no longer buy as much with the currency as it does before. Economic planners in countries with robust economies adopt measures to make sure that inflation target is always at an average. React: [email protected]

NORTHERN Mindanao is home to two of the most populous highly urbanized cities (HUCs) in the country, Cagayan de Oro (813,856) and Iligan (322,821).

Cagayan de Oro City placed ninth in the Top Ten Most Populous HUCs, while Iligan placed 25th. The City of Cagayan de Oro’s popula-tion grows at approximately 2.69 percent annually based on the population on years 2000-2010. Iligan City’s population growth rate was observed at 1.25 percent.

Indeed, the total popula-tion of the Northern Min-danao as of May 1, 2010

hits 4.3 million. This was officially declared together with the country’s total population last March 30, 2012 when President Be-nigno Simeon Cojuangco Aquino III signed Procla-mation No. 362.

The results revealed that the region has grown 2.06

percent annually since year 2000 which places it at the ninth spot among other regions in the country put-ting CALABARZON on top at 12.6 million and NCR at the second spot with 11.86 million.

The results also showed that the region’s population

is among the country’s fast-est growing ranking at 4th next to CALABARZON (3.07), SOCCSKSARGEN (2.46) and Central Luzon (2.14). Davao region (1.97) completes the top five fastest growing regions.

The population growth brought over concerns on the provision of the basic needs of the people con-cerning health, food supply, security, housing and many others.

These concerns caused an unease on the part of population control propo-nents to expedite the

By GENEVIEVE G. CANTOR

THE islets in Barangay Bri-tanya in San Agustin town have been frequently visited by domestic and foreign tourists in Surigao del Sur but just recently, local pump boat operators and owners of the resorts in the area are now in a tug-of-war.

Presently, there are three private resorts in Baran-gay Britanya––and they are dominating the tour-ism business. Two of these resort owners were owned by public official in Surigao del Sur––Vice Governor Manuel O. Alameda and Sangguniang Bayan Member Tessie Orcullo.

Resort owners, pump boat operators in Surigao Sur in tug-of-warPump boat operators

of Barangay Britanya com-plained that there are biases between the m and the resort owners.

During the meeting con-ducted on April 22 by the municipality of San Agustin led by the municipal tourism and the local pump boat operators, issues such as the lousy implementation of rules and regulations, and ordinance have been discussed.

The pump boat opera-tors claimed local laws were not followed and properly implemented by the local government of San Agustin.

The pump boat opera-tors complained that the so-called first-come first-

serve scheme is not prop-erly observed by the local government unit.

They also complained that private resort owners allegedly declined to regis-

ter with the local govern-ment unit thus there was no proper coordination the guests.

“Unta adunay pag or-ganisa sa mga pump boat.

Ang tanan pumpboat ibu-tang tanan sa LGU session hall ug wala nay ibilin sa private resort, aron ang tanan mosakay nga mag island hopping, usa lang

ang adtoan nga area, ug kini ang reception hall sa LGU aron intawon patas ang pagpanginabuhi,” a pump boat operator com-mented.

COTABATO City––The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) this week established its first regional office in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mind-anao to uphold the rights of the indigenous and Moro peoples in the context of their rich culture and his-tory of struggle for human development.

CHR chairperson Eta Rosales, said for the first time in 22 years of ARMM’s existence, the CHR estab-lishes its regional office in the Muslim region, on persistent recommendation made by ARMM officer-in-charge Governor Mujiv Hataman.

She said human rights would be upheld in the ARMM, not merely by CHR standards, but in the context also of the “rich experi-ence of the Bangsamoro in their history of continuing struggle in many diverse fields of endeavor, including socio-economic, cultural

and political development.” Representatives from

local civil society organi-zations present during the ceremonies said Rosales effectively cited the United Nations Covenant on the Rights of Indigenous Peo-ples, which was introduced by the international body on April 14, 1994.

Meanwhile, the Institute of Autonomy and Gover-nance (IAG), a no-govern-ment organization based here, had underscored what it said was the essential role of the media in the recog-nition of the rights of the Indigenous Peoples in the ARMM for Empowerment and Sustainable Develop-ment (IPDEV).

Aveen Acuña-Gulo, IP-DEV project manager for IAG, said her group was extending membership of its monitoring group, called the project sounding board, to members of the local media. CD WITH WIRE REPORT

BUDGET Secretary Butch Abad on Tuesday said there will be no across the board salary increase as the gov-ernment is still studying the P125 wage hike demand of labor groups.

Abad made the announcement during the Labor Day celebration at the historic Chino Roces Bridge (formerly Mendiola) before a throng of labor groups.

This may trigger again the two opposing views on population growth––those of the population pessi-mists and the population optimists.

It reminds me of a de-bate that took place in my Population Development class at Capitol Univer-sity when we scrutinized the Malthusian model of population growth against Ester Boserup’s own para-digm on population growth and other views emanating from policy analysts, com-mentators and researchers. Mindanao sustain itself?”The Medium-Term Re-

gional Development Plan (MTRDP) of Northern Mindanao for the years 2011-2016 envisions North-ern Mindanao to be the leading industrial core and trade center in Southern Philippines with dynamic men and women enjoy-ing equal opportunities in harnessing and sustaining its agriculture and natural resources in building a de-cent, harmonious and safe environment.

It sets a target of making Northern Mindanao as the most competitive, efficient and attractive transshipment hub and venue for industrial venture.

Speaking of sustainabil-ity, the MTRDP provides that as the regional economy undergoes transformation, more value-adding activi-ties such as processing and manufacturing shall be in-

tensified to fully harness and sustain its rich agriculture and resource-based endow-ments and potentials.

However, we have to be aware of some statistical data that necessitate careful de-liberation among planners. For instance, we have to take note of the following:

• The latest official pov-erty statistics that are based on (per Capita) income data sourced from the Family Income and Expenditures Survey (FIES) 0f 2009 re-vealed that in the bottom 40% income group, they spent all what they have earned such that they do not have any savings at all.

• More or less, on average a person usually consumes two sacks of rice annually. Given the population of the region, farmers should have produced 7.8 million sacks of rice. Moreover, for this year, they have to produce approximately 9 million sacks of rice.

• On health, it is expected that 131 doctors are needed to take care of patients and at the same time we will need 4,476 hospital beds

for these patients. However, professional doctors are either migrating to for-eign countries or shifting to another profession to become nurses if given the opportunity.

• For the maintenance of peace and order, on av-erage Northern Mindanao needs approximately 6,000 policemen.

• The latest results of the population count shows that there are already 209 per-sons per square kilometer in the region. If we take a closer look at Cagayan de Oro City, which is the biggest city in the region in terms of population with a land area of 412.8 square kilometers, there are al-ready 1,458 persons in every square kilometer.

The scenario brings us back to the question: Can Northern Mindanao sustain itself?

specie and a food and medicine source kind of trees. Dr. Nelson T. Cuares-ma, Ph.D. and the Execu-

tive Director for Research Development Advocacy and Linkages of the COAST-LINE Philippines once said that “Banyan” Trees can protect water basins, riv-ers, and will not destroy infrastructure.

Banyan Trees is a fast growing tree that can pro-tect the environment, its forests and can beautify places and a good source of cool shades particularly in mitigating climate change and ultimately protect and preserve the environment.

Erstwhile, some of the PNP in Misamis Occidental, Police Camp and Station nurseries now are growing seedlings for the “banyan” trees, falcatta variety, ma-hogany variety, gemelina variety and even fruit trees to implement Pulis Maka-kalikasan movement and to plant 10 Milyong Puno Pamana sa Kinabukasan.

However, President Be-nigno S. Aquino III has ordered the Regional Tri-partite Wage and Produc-

Hike...from page 7

tivity Boards (RTWPBs) to step up its consultations, dialogues and studies into the possibility of granting the Filipinos’ fervent wish for added remuneration.

The President had earli-er expressed apprehension at supporting the proposed P125 across the board wage increase, saying it was counter-productive and would raise prices on basic commodities and other services.

Labor coalition Nag-kaisa! has submitted a letter to the President asking him to end contractualization and to grant a 90-peso wage increase in the National Capital Region and other pending increases in all regions.

Labor Secretary Rosa-linda Baldoz earlier said petitions for salary increase in the NCR will be tackled on May 26 or a year after the last round of increases was implemented.

She however asked the NCR Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board to fast track its pub-lic consultation on the wage increase petition so it can “act fast towards making a decision” after May 26. CD WITH WIRE REPORTS

Llanuza failed to appear before the City Council. Instead, the DOE sent a certain Delia U. Sy.

Calingin questioned the DOE’s regulatory role of the oil industry in the country for its failure to implement uniformed prices of fuel products in Mindanao and the rest of the country.

The City Council was acting on public and motor-ist complaint of exorbitant prices of fuel products in Cagayan de Oro City com-pared to its neighboring cities and provinces.

Before the rollback of fuel prices last month, pump prices of local gas dealers in Cagayan de Oro City was more than P60 per liter for premium gasoline

In other areas in North-ern Mindanao, pump prices of premium gasoline is P2.00 to P4.00 per liter lower than current pump prices of premium gasoline in Cagayan de Oro.

In some parts of Surigao del Sur, pump prices of premium gasoline there was even P6.00 to P8.00 per liter lower than pump prices of premium gas sold in any part in the Caraga Region and Northern Mindanao.

Records at the DOE placed average prices of unleaded gasoline at P57.15/liter with its prices ranging from P53.75/liter to P60.42/liter. Diesel prices ranged from P45.50/liter to P48.50/liter with an average price of P47.90/liter.

As of April 12, the ad-justed domestic pump prices are now at P46.70 to P49.25 per liter for diesel, and gaso-line is at P54.30 to P61.51 per liter.

The local oil industry uses the Dubai Crude and Mean of Platts Singapore (MOPS) for benchmark references for oil pump prices.

Delia Sy told the City Council that the DOE has no authority to regulate pump prices of fuel products since its duty is only to monitor.

She said the DOE has no police power to order closure of fuel distributors in the local market that sells exorbitant pump prices of fuel in the country.

‘The country’s oil com-panies like Shell, Chevron and Petron are fixing prices of their fuel products which the DOE monitors,’ Sy said.

She said she had no idea why pump prices of some local dealers are higher than pump prices of other dealers in some parts of Mindanao. ‘Perhaps, the costs of transport of these products from oil depots to other areas are bases of local pump pricing reference,’ Sy told the City Council.

C a l ing in , howe ver, hinted that smuggling of fuel products could be the principal culprit why fuels in other areas in Mindanao have cheaper pump prices. He did not elaborate.

Last year, Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro City, filed

Gabriela in the same prov-ince, was startled with her arrest, as no prior subpoena from the courts were served to her so she can respond with her lawyer on the trumped up case.

Still, the composite team of police, military, and intel-ligence groups took her to the police station, interrogated her and later brought her to Tangub City jail where she would face her case, said the group.

It said: “She suffered from hypertension during the in-terrogation, but was denied medical check-up. The Dipolog Health Office just issued a medical clearance that she was in good physical condition.”

Igloria’s arrest shows that health workers are still targets of the state security that consid-ers this sector as threats, similar to the case of the Morong 43 health workers detained for

a resolution in Congress asking an investigation into rampant smuggling in the oil industry.

Rodriguez also sought for the review of the taxes imposed by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on oil products.

He said the dubious tax imposed on the oil indus-try might have encouraged proliferation of smuggling.

Lately, Malacanang an-nounced the creation of a joint task force of the Department of Energy and the Department of Justice (DOE-DOJ) that would run after erring oil manufactur-ers in the country.

DOE Secretary Jose Rene Almendras warned stake-holders in the oil industry of imprisonment if the newly created DOE-DOJ task force found them unfairly ma-nipulating oil prices.

more than a year, the Barug Katungod lamented.

It added: “This also shows the continuing vilification and harassment of human rights defenders in the Zamboanga Region in Mindanao in the past six years.”

In 2006, a pastor of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines was assassinated by motorcycle riding in tandem men in Calamba, Misamis Occidental, while an organizer of a church peasant group was shot dead in Oroquieta City.

Two para lega ls f rom Karapatan barely escaped from motorcycle riding in tandem men tailing them in Misamis Occidental.

Igloria said she already knew there were threats to her life since 2010, when she was reportedly tipped that she is included in the Army’s “Order of Battle,” a list of so-called “Enemies of the State.”

Igloria opted to lie low from work, an option also chosen by other paralegals and health workers in the region after they were charged with cases of murder by the Philip-pine Army under the Western Mindanao Command.

One of the paralegals, Ben-jie Labastin who now teaches in La Salle University in Ozamiz City, is in the same charge sheet with Igloria, and was arrested but later released.

Legal “offensives” are part of the Armed Forces’ ploy to neutralize human rights de-fenders, said the group adding, “these legal maneuvers include the arbitrary insertion of names in lieu of John or Jane Does in existing criminal charges.”

Barug Katungod calls for support to Igloria and other defenders facing fabricated charges. “We call on the public to appeal to the Department of Justice to probe on this legal offensives and for the protection of human rights defenders,” said the group, in a statement.

BAGUIO City––World Box-ing Organization welter-weight champion Manny Pacquiao officially ended on Thursday the first leg of his preparation here for his coming title fight against undefeated American Timo-thy Bradley next month.

A six-round give-and-take engagements with Rus-sians Ruslan Provodnikov and Rustam Nugaev com-pleted the 20-round sparring portion of the training at the Shape Up Boxing Gym at the Cooyeesan Hotel along the zigzagging Naguilian Road.

Pacquiao ends Baguio training for fight vs BradleyPacquiao, who is staking

his 147-pound title against world junior-welterweight titlist Bradley on June 9, and members of his coaching staff, headed by Freddie Roach, assessed the results of the three-week camp as satisfactory.

“I’m not yet 100 percent, but I believe we’ve done what we’re trying to achieve here in Baguio,” Pacquiao told this writer before the start of the final day here.

“We’ve gained 50 percent of what our target at the day of the fight,” he assessed. “Nakuha na nain ang ka-lahati ng dapat makuha in

all aspects of preparations; when the day of the fight comes, 100 percent na.”

“Yun naman ang purpose of scheduling the training calendar step-by-step,” he explained. “You get some-thing in the earlier stage, then advance a level higher in the next.”

Roach agreed, saying, “We always had a good start and here is no difference. This is only the beginning. We gained a little of every-thing here, then figure out the projected total results when we get to Los Angeles.”

As in last Tuesday’s ses-sion, the routine roadwork

held in the morning was cancelled in order to give the eight-division belt-owner a respite in preparation for the next stop of the buildup program ar the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.

“The past week was tough for Manny. He came back from a long layoff, but he’s been getting better and better as days gone by,” Roach said.

“I need to give him rest. He needs good sleep because we’re travelling long to Ma-nila tonight. Training and workout resume tomorrow at Manny’s place (MP Gym in Sampaloc),” the five-time

‘Trainer of the Year’ said.“Sparring resumes Sat-

urday afternoon at the same place, then we fly to the U.S. that same night,” he said.

While there was none of the many distractions that marked their previous preparations, still Pacquiao has been lacking in sleep due to the nightly Bible-preaching activities, which Roach himself considered to have affected the regimen at very minimum.

As to Pacquiao’s physical condition, Marvin Somodio, who has taken over the job of getting him in shape from Alex Ariza, attested that he is fast getting back his strength and stamina.

“Wala namang problema sa conditioning aspect,” So-modio said. “Alam naman ni Manny na i-kondisyon ang sarili niya. Konting guidance lang at reminder kung may kulang o may sobra.”

“Alam naman natin si Manny, kapag ginanahan,

banat nang banat until he grew unreasonably tired,” the 28-year-old former ama-teur fighter and member of Shape Up coaching staff added.

“Yung recurring leg cramps nga niya, hindi na sumasakit ilang araw na and I hope ma-completely healed na,” he bared. “Yung shoulder pain na inireklamo niya last week, nagagamot na rin.”

“Sinusunod naman niya lahat ng instructions ko. Maybe because wala na si-yang choice, wala na kasi si Alex,” he assured. “Sinasabi ko kasi sa kanya we have to do the things we have to do, otherwise, walang mang-yayaring maganda, a factor that made Roach happier. That’s one of the most beau-tiful things that happened in the camp. While before, Manny didn’t often listen to Alex, now he’s following Marvin’s all instructions.” (PNA)

DAVAO City––A month-long Davao Summerfest Sports camps will open on May 7 at various venues here.

Davao Summerfest Sports project head Neil Bravo said the month-long summer sports and arts festival is being organized for the city by the Duaw Davao Festival Foundation.

He said camps in football and basketball will be staged on May 7-18 and will be catering close to 4,000 children.

For the football camp, he said two batches of players were scheduled with the supervision of Christian Ea and a team of coaches from the Davao Football Association (DFA) and Crocodile Park Football Academy.

Bravo said the first batch will be held from May 7-11 while the second batch will be on May 14-18 at the Davao Crocodile Park football fields.

City Sports Development Division OIC Pocholo Elegio said the basketball camp will be staged in various venues covering the three districts of the city. This will be handled by coaches under the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) led by its city director Atty. Marvin “Oying” Melodias.

Bravo said the summer fest formally opened last Friday at the People’s Park.

He also urged interested participants to inquire at the City Sports Development Office or in their respec-tive barangays.

Slots for the training camps will be allocated for each barangay, he added. A report from the Philippine News Agency
