M
indy Greenstein, PhD(mindygreenstein.com ) grew upin Brooklyn with Yiddish-
speaking, Orthodox, holocaust survivorparents. Greenstein is a survivor too, but ofanother kindchemo and cancer.
This 48-year-old Jewish mother who liveswith her husband and two young boys onthe UWS is the author of a newly releasedbook of personal essays, The House on CrashCorner And Other Unavoidable Calamities(Greenpoint Press). The authors motto is,You cant spell joy without the oy.
A psychologist slash psycho-oncologist,Greenstein will make readers laugh whiletheyre crying. Mindy Greensteins voiceis frank, funny, sharp and delightful, said
Susan Shapiro, author of Lighting Up andSpeed Shrinking.
Greenstein said, When I frst beganwriting, it was about personal existentialreactions to my patients. She labeledpsychology writing really boring andbegan writing short memoir pieces. Irealized there are two parts of methewriter and the psychologist.
Greenstein specializes in treating cancerpatients and is affiliated with MemorialSloan KetteringCancer Center. Irony struck.
After years of counseling others, she herselfwas diagnosed with breast cancer.
Her transformation frompsychologist treating cancer patientsto being a patient herself is brave, nakedly honest and poignant, saidShapiro. Its as though the shrink in herforces the writer to keep digging deeper, offering wisdom and solace to the reader.
On her new blog (psychologytoday.com/blog/the-fip-side ) Greenstein wrote, Thinkingof the famous Seinfeld episode that hadintroduced the concept of sponge-worthydates, I started a list of television shows thatwere so good I could have enjoyed themeven during chemo.
Self magazine published Greensteinsessay called, When the Doctor Becomesthe Patient. When asked if humor is apsychological defense mechanism, shelaughed and said, Yes, and a very goodone.
Greenstein will be reading fromThe House on Crash Corner at KGB
Bar, Saturday, May 14th at 6:45 pm,85 East 4th Street.
