PAST NARRATIVE

Shallow focus – signifying the picture of young Taylor in the forefront. Her parents, who appear to be arguing in the background are blurred, brining the audience’s attention to the young girls facial expressions, where she looks upset about hearing her parents argue. This suggests that in this music video, older Taylor is comparing her love life to her parents, which she witnessed growing up.

This mid-shot of Taylor is a café setting where she meets her love interest in the video could signify her country roots because the costume that she is wearing and the setting appear to be stereotypically country. This could imply that the song ‘mine’ was written about a guy that Taylor met in her hometown.

This wide-shot Is significant because the seafront is where the couple later visit with their children, therefore the place where their relationship supposedly started, and therefore is an important place for them.

These mid-shots showing Taylor embrace her love interest have low-key lighting , which suggests that these events happened in her past because they appear darker which could be interpreted as her past.

FUTURE NARRATIVE

A majority of the shots in the narrative of this video and mid-shots. This could be because the director wants to audience to be able to clearly see the performers but also what is going on around them.

In these images, Taylor is mainly on the left hand side of the screen, and her love interest is on the more dominant side. This could imply that he is an extremely dominant part in her life.

There is higher-key lighting in the future narrative compared to the past narrative. This could suggest that her future is ‘brighter’ than her past, referring to the bad experience that she had with her parents at the beginning of the video.

There appears to be a soft focus around the images in Taylor’s future narrative. This suggests that the future is almost dreamlike, and is her ideal life with the person that she loves.

A convention of pop videos that this video follows is the link between lyrics and visuals. The final lyric of this song is “I can see it now” and Taylor is imagining her future in the video.

PERFORMANCE

This close-up shows Taylor’s star image, and show the performance element of the video. This is crucial in a video because it markets the star.

Mid-shots are used a lot during the performance because it gives the audience an idea of the background of the setting, as well as showing the artist. For instance, in this mid shot, images of Taylor and her love interest appear which are key to the music video.

High and low angle shots show the audience gives the illusion of space around her, and the nature outdoor surroundings. The costume that she is wearing is all white, which has the connotations of her being innocent, which is the image that Taylor Swift portrays.
