Mineral resources in Georgia country
Fossil resources
For general characterization of the mineral resources of Georgia, creation of classification is needed.
Most commonly the mineral resources are divided into two main types, ore type and non-ore type. In
these two main types, several species with industrial and economic purposes are unified:
Propellant and energy resources (store, coal, propellant shales, oil, thermal waters, peat)
Metals and resources of rare elements (iron, titan, manganese, aluminum, gold, silver, copper, zinc,
molybdenum, wolfram, quicksilver, antimonite, arsenic)
Chemical, agrochemical and other resources (barite, calcite, benitonite, talc, sulphur, ceolite, diatomite,
perlite, acid proof andesites, mirabilite, lithographic stone, pigments, phospatic deposits, spongolites
and etc.)
Paving stones and ceramic resources (tracits and pegmatits, porcelain stone, agate, gagate, obsidine)
Paving and construction material resources (gabbros, granites, syenites, various diorites, gabbro-
diabase, tenecites, andesite, dacite, basalts, peats, marble, limes, construction limes)
Metallurgical, inert and construction material resources (gravel-sand, volcanic slag, gauge sand, glass
sand, lime, metallurgical dolomites, cement lime, construction stones, anhydride, gypsum, spackle,
flame proof clay, slates)
Underground mineral waters: (fresh and thermal waters)

Mineral resource fund of Georgia:
Mineral resources fund of Georgia consists of 950 deposits and subjects of investigative works. 62.8% of
the deposits are large (national and international importance) 30.9% are of the local importance, and
6.2% subjects of the investigative works.
Manganese: There is a reserve of worldwide importance of manganese in Georgia, the Chiatura deposit
by its quality and quantity is on the second place in the world.
Barite: There are 33 deposits of Barite in Georgia, the total reserves amounts to 8 tons Calcite: There
are 4 deposits of calcite in Georgia and all four of them are located in the Imereti region
Benitonite: Benitonite is a unique mineral used for various purposes, in Georgia the reserves of
benitonite amount to more than 130 million tons
Zeolite: The raw material deposits’ are located close to each other in the region of Mtskheta. The
Zeolite is represented by the mineral-clinoptilolite which has the best technological characteristics. The
content of the mineral in the mining mass amounts to 60% stable and the mineral does not require
enrichment.
Diatomite: There is only on deposit of diatomite in Georgia and it has the unique characteristics. The
deposit is located in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. At the present moment American company “Agate-
Diatomite” LLC is operating the deposite.
Perlite: There is only one deposit of Perlite in Georgia; it is located at the boarder of the Tsalka and
Ninotsminda regions.
Acid proof Andesine: The deposits of Acid proof materials in Georgia are located in the Mtskheta-
Mtianeti, Samtskhe-Javakheti and Kvemo kartli regions. The quantity of the minerals in the deposits
exceeds 22 million tons.
Mirabilite (Glouber’s salt): There are 3 deposits of Glauber’s salt in Georgia, one of them is located in
Tbilisi (Gldani district) which has almost exhausted and There are two deposits of mirabilite in Sagaredjo
district.

Phosporite: Phospatic fertilizers in the agriculture. There are two deposits of phosporite in Georgia,
located in the Imereti and Lechkhumi regions.
Lithographic stone: despite its name the lithographic stone in the modern world is mainly used for the
fabrication of the containers in the production of synthetic diamonds. There are enough deposits of this
mineral in Georgia and their technological features are studied. Mineral Pigment: despite the fact that
there are enough deposits of mineral pigment for paint manufacturing the Litho phonic factory of
Kutaisi was producing white paints manufactured on the basis of barite.
Calcedone and Spongolite: There is only one deposit of Calcedone and Spongolite in Georgia, located in
Adjameti, near Kutaisi.
Ceramic resources: There are enough deposits of ceramic resources in Georgia for production of
porcelain and earthenware, but they are not used for industrial purposes.
Semi-precious stones: There are 22 deposits of agate, 29 deposits of mountain crystal, 11 deposits of
gagate, 5 deposits of onyx, and 1 deposit of obsidine.
Paving and construction stone resources: there are 231 deposits of paving and construction stones,
their species vary and have decorative features.
Metallurgical, inert and construction resources: there are 363 deposits of economic purpose in Georgia;
these deposits include all types of raw materials for construction purposes.
