Mayor Crombie Gives Red-Carpet Welcome to Indian Consul General

Mississauga Man Sentenced to U.S. Prison for Stealing Trade Secrets

In an historic first, Mayor Crombie welcomed the Indian Consul General Akhilesh Mishra to Mississauga several days ago, marking the first official visit of the Indian Consul General to Mississauga, a city with a large and thriving Indian population. Following a red carpet welcome and the signing of the official guestbook, the mayor presented Consul General Mishra with a hand-blown glass ornament designed by Alyssa Getz and Tommy Cudmore, local artisans working at the Living Arts Centre.

The first foreigner ever convicted of stealing trade secrets from the US has been sentenced to 18 months in a U.S. prison. But this man isn’t from where one would expect; in fact, he hails from Missis-sauga. David Pokora, a 23 year old computer science student at the University of Toronto, has received an 18 month sentence for one count of conspiracy to commit fraud and related activity.

Mississauga Family Still Trapped in Egypt on Unknown Grounds

Foreign DeskEditorial

Local Biotech Industry Poised to ExpandMississauga, Canada’s second largest life sci-ences sector, may be one the brink of expanding its already formidable bio-technology industry.

Next week, a delega-tion from the city includ-ing Mayor Crombie will travel to Philadelphia for the 2015 BIO Inter-national Convention. The BIO International Conven-tion is the world’s largest biotech focused conven-tion, and will host more than 1,700 exhibitors, as well as more than sixty regional pavilions includ-ing multiple countries. The convention claims to allow exhibitors to reach “high level executives and influential decision mak-ers”, and will also over a thousand corporations including international pharma and biotech com-panies, who come to the convention seeking new talent and opportunities. As such, the convention offers cities, countries, cor-porations, and scientists spectacular potential for growth, to the benefit of all. Last year, the conven-tion drew over 15,000 at-tendees and covered over 160,000 square feet, and the organizers are seeking to top that this year. With sponsorship from numer-ous giants in the industry, including Alexandria, Ge-nentech, and Merck, and journals such as Scientific American watching close-ly, the convention truly is the best possible opportu-

nity to stimulate growth in the biotech industry.

Mayor Crombie and sev-eral staff from Mississauga’s economic development of-fice will be attending the event in an attempt to meet with investors, scientists, and authorities in order to further build the Missis-sauga life science industry, which already has over 350 life science corporations, and employs over 250,000 individuals. Crombie will take part in the Gold Leaf Awards Ceremony, as well as participating in multiple Ontario and Canada events within the convention. Fur-thermore, she will meet with University of Toronto and Mississauga graduates in biotech and host a round table breakfast for Missis-sauga based companies, hoping to encourage them towards further growth in Mississauga, as well as thanking them for their con-tributions to the city. At a conference of such renown, these events are solely the beginnings of what the city could hope to achieve by at-tending, and Mississauga is sure to benefit as a result of our attendance.

Seven hundred and ten days into his ordeal, Khaled Al-Qazzaz and his family have still not been allowed to leave Egypt, despite recent hopes that the family would finally be able to return to Canada.

By Issac Shiff

Khaled Al-Qazzaz is a teacher, former engineer, and devoted community service worker who helped to found the Mokatam Language School, the first school in Mokatam to offer British and American High School certificates. His ordeal began on July 3rd, 2013, when he was detained without a war-rant while travelling in Egypt. The Egyptian government de-nied holding Khaled and re-fused to discuss his location, which was later discovered to be a cell no larger than a closet in an Egyptian prison infamous for holding political prisoners. Khaled, who suffers from a back condition, had his health rapid-ly worsen due to the cramped conditions, and is currently at risk of permanent paralysis if

he does not receive certain sur-geries. Some hope blossomed for Khaled in January this year, when he was released, but on April 15th, when he was sched-uled to leave the airport, the family was detained for 7 hours, during which time they were detained for unknown reasons and had their passport’s con-fiscated, along with almost 50,000 CAD that his wife, Sara Attia, had saved for the surger-ies Khaled will require upon ar-rival to Canada.

The reasons for this detain-ment despite the lack of any

travel bans are currently un-known, but are suspected to be political by relatives of Khaled. As Khaled’s condition worsens, with imaging reports confirm-ing multiple areas possessing risks of irreparable spinal dam-age, anther deadline looms: the verdict of former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi’s death sentence appeal. Ahmad Attia, a relative of Khaled, fears that if the sentence is carried out, it will lead to civil unrest, thoroughly complicating at-tempts to extricate the family from Egypt.

Former Mayor McCallion to Carry Torch in Pan Am Flame Relay

Sports

By Steve Kasuba

The relay began at 11am, with excitement palpable despite the in-clement weather, when Jack Ranieri, a community torchbearer and father of two was the first Mississaugan to bear the torch. Other community torchbearers included Shivhoun de Melo, a physiotherapist nominated by the father of a cerebral palsy patient and described as “truly a blessing.” At 11:30, the torch began moving south down Hurontario, and reached the Waterfront Festi-

val in Port Credit Memorial Park at 1:00pm, where the Cauldron was lit, and performances at the festival began. The festival attracted ap-proximately 50,000 visitors, and is partnered with a number of non-profit organizations including St. John Ambulance and the Mississau-ga Canoe Club. This year, illScarlett and Carlos Bastidos opened the cel-ebration in a magnificent show, and became part of a festival featuring numerous events and workshops throughout several days including archery, sumo wrestling, illusions,

and a rock climbing wall. Now that the flame has left the Mississauga, it will reach Sarnia, Chatham Kent, and Windsor on Tuesday.

Former Liberal MP Andrew Kania won’t Run for Tories in Brampton West

MiNews sources have con-firmed that the former Bramp-ton West Liberal MP Andrew Kania will not run either on Liberal or on Conservative tick-et. He said he is too busy with his law practice this time of the election season. Rumors of his switching the parties were circling everywhere since the news broke out that he is not contesting nomination and has

his name withdrawn. Other parties rushed to turn his red color ‘t’ shirt to another color but a senior party person like him hardly does it and he didn’t.

On June 14th, the Pan Am Flame relay made its way through Mississauga, taking a 7.6 km path through the city. Each Torchbearer completed a 200 metre stretch of the relay before passing on the flame, which travelled from Mississauga Celebration Square to Port Credit Memorial Park, where the ceremonial caul-dron was lit, kicking off annual Waterfront Festival Celebration. Among the torchbearers was 94 year old beloved former mayor Hazel McCallion, who completed her route in a flotilla down the Credit River. Current Mayor Bonnie Crombie was also in attendance during the event, along with several other members of the city council.

Jordan Spieth became the youngest player to win golf’s U.S. Open since Bobby Jones in 1923, capturing a second straight major when Dustin Johnson three-putted from 12 feet on the final hole with a chance to win or force a playoff.

The 21-year-old Spieth, who also won the Masters Tournament in April, shot a 1-under-par 69 during the final round to finish with a four-day total of 5-under 275 at Chambers Bay Golf Course outside Seattle.

Toronto City Council Votes for Hybrid East Gardiner ExpresswayAs the deterioration of the Gardiner Expressway contin-ued, councillors were forced to act in deciding the fate of the aging highway. And in a 24-21 vote yesterday, coun-cillors finally decided for a solution to the issue, opting for Mayor Jon Tory’s plan for a hybrid Gardiner East. The issue was fiercely argued by both sides, with Mayor Tory arguing in favour of the re-duced transit times that the new hybrid will offer, while his opponents, argued that the cheaper cost of alterna-tives would free up money to expand the transit system, as well as developing the waterfront further. Tory was backed by an industry coali-tion, and only received sev-eral swing votes among the council by agreeing to have staffers reconsider other op-tions, such as a traffic tunnel. If the vote gains environ-mental approval, along with several other steps, con-struction on the new hybrid expressway is expected to begin in 2019.

By Amir Ali

The hybrid option for the Gardiner expressway was seen as a compromise between those who wanted to maintain traffic flow along the route and those who wanted to create a more picturesque route along the waterfront, a neighbour-hood currently experiencing extremely large amounts of development. The elevated stretch of the Gardiner express-way currently west of the Don Valley Parkway will be pre-served and repaired, although the elevated ramp leading to

it will need to be replaced due to its dilapidated condition. On and off ramps leading to the section of the Gardiner east of the Don River and extending all the way to Logan Avenue will be removed, and in their place, Lake Shore Boulevard East will be reconstructed into a tree line six lane street, allowing access to the waterfront. Access to the elevated Gardiner will be via new ramps between the Dan River and Cherry Street. These renovations will cost approxi-mately $400 million up front, $500 million for maintenance of route, which is expected to last 100 years. Construction will

take six years, although only a year and a half of these will require road detours. Upon com-pletion, transit time will remain unchanged for most, but some westbound trips may take sev-eral minutes longer than if they were to use the current route.

The hybrid option was heavily supported by Mayor Jon Tory, but with a vote so close, what were the other options that drew such impassioned support? The most popular al-ternative was to remove the entirety of the Gardiner Ex-pressway east of Jarvis, which would then be replaced with an eight-lance boulevard. Sev-

eral on and off ramps would be constructed in order to connect the new boulevard to the Don Valley Parkway, removing the requirement of traffic to travel through a stop light to move between the two roads. Con-struction would take the same amount of time as the hybrid option, but would require four years of detours, and would in-crease the transit time of 25% of trips by several minutes upon completion. However, mainte-nance would be considerable cheaper, costing only $135 mil-lion over 100 years, and $326 million up front for construc-tion. As well, this option would

allow access to a large amount of space for construction and public use, along with allowing the development of the former Unilever factory site. However, it is worth noting that when separately voted on, this option failed 19-26, indicating a lack of support from some.

The third option in play was simply maintaining the Gardin-er. However, due to the cost of such an endeavour, along with the restrictions it would place upon waterfront development, this option was supported by few; in fact, it drew only one vote at the council meeting, from former mayor Rob Ford.

Ottawa Reports

While the main political battle of Canada is traditionally between the Liberals and the Conserva-tives, recent polls indicate that in the upcoming election, this may not be the case, and that Tom Mulcair may be on course to repeat or even surpass Jack Layton’s miraculous achieve-ments last election. In the latest polls, Tom Mulcair is in fact leading, ahead of both the incumbent Stephen Harper and Liberal leader Justin Trudeau. Mulcair holds 34% of the vote, leading above the other two parties by a narrow margin, just barely breaking out of a dead heat between the three. But the true cause of alarm for both the Liberals and Conservatives is that the NDP are also first in second choice votes, indicating that their numbers still have room to climb yet higher. In Atlantic Canada, the NDP has risen 15% in the past three months, from 14% to 29%, whereas the Liberals have fallen from 56% to 43% in the same area. But in Quebec, the NPD is polling extremely highly at 41%, whereas the Liberals only hold 25% in the area, with the Con-servatives in distant third.

By Daniel Lazzam

Up until now, it seems that Stephen Harper and the Con-

servatives have been mainly con-cerned about Justin Trudeau and the Liberals, targeting most of their attack ads at Trudeau, such as the ill-received ad “The Inter-view”. However, with these results, the Conservatives are reportedly preparing for a barrage of attack ads and verbal ammunition aimed at the NDP. It’s no wonder they seem so concerned; with such close results in the polls, in order to win even a minority govern-

ment, every single voter who put the conservatives first or second would need to vote for them, an extremely unlikely turn of events.

With this upswing in popular-ity, the NDP’s proposed policies have come under close scrutiny by both the Liberals and Con-servatives, particularly their plans of spending over $130 billion dollars in eight years, a huge amount of spending with no readily apparent source. Other

NDP plans include raising corpo-rate taxes back to pre-Tory levels, along with cancelling the Con-servative party’s income-splitting plan, which has been described as a loophole for the rich. Tom Mulcair will give a speech before the Montreal Board of Trade on Thursday, and another before the Toronto-based Economic Club of Canada the following Thursday, seeking to bolster his economic reputation, depicting the NDP

as ready to inherit the Canadian economy, and establishing him-self as a worth steward for our finances.

While other parties seem concerned about Mulcair’s pol-icy, voters appear to regard him quite highly; in another recent poll, 37% of people believe that Mulcair will win the feder-al leaders debate, with Stephen Harper in second with 25%, Justin Trudeau in third with 16%, and Elizabeth May with only 5%. These figures indi-cate the voters believe Mulcair to be intelligent and informed on the issues, with many vot-ers also basing their expec-tations on the leaders’ past performances in debates. How-ever, the debates are still quite away, and such high expecta-tions for Mulcair may deterio-rate if other leaders, particu-larly the yet-untested Trudeau, show themselves to be worthy competitors. Trudeau in partic-ular has quite a lot of room for growth, as unlike Harper, view-ers have very little idea of what to expect, and so only time will tell the results of the debate, and the election that follows it.
