As a Graduate Student

• Core to the research in the university

• Different from undergraduates– Mood, working mode, expectation– Learn how to identify issues, collect data,

General Advice

• Think three times and lay out the work in top-down manner before going into details or experiments – Your may need to re-position if no progress is made in

one month• Be meticulous in your English writing

– You can correct 80% typo.– No plagiarism, write in your words even survey

• For master students: One international conf. submission• For PhD students: You should have your first paper done,

Review Papers

• Required for all my graduate students– Peer review is one of the most important practice in academic– Learn how to write good papers– The best way to evaluate students in my experience

• Get the main point of the paper– Evaluate its novelty, significance of results, impact to the field;

Do survey if so necessary

• Write a meaningful report with enough substance– Provide your specific comments; do not copy from its

abstract/text– Your rating should be made properly with respect to the

competitiveness of the conference
