LIFEat Lakes College
Going to college can be a daunting experience for anyone, but it’s also incredibly exciting. Here at Lakes College, we aim to provide the best experience for every single one of our students.
Every full-time student is assigned a Student Mentor who can offer advice, support and guidance about your course or any issues or concerns you might have. We also have a multi-faith and contemplation room, designed to be a quiet space for reflection, contemplation or prayer.
With our cafe, Graduates restaurant, Starbucks, shop and common room, you’ll also have plenty of opportunities to meet new people and make new friends. As a College student, you’ll also have the option to purchase the NUS Extra card which will give you discount on clothes, travel, music and eating out.
As a Lakes College student, you have a say in how your college experience will be. Our Learner Voice network allows you to liaise with other students, provide ideas and suggestions, and become an important communication link between staff and students. You get to participate in the development of the college, to ensure all learners enjoy the best possible experience.
We firmly believe in helping all our students get to where they want to be in life. That’s why we’ve recently opened The Workplace, a place where students can gain valuable knowledge in order to become work-ready. Students can get
help with their CV and UCAS applications, get interview tips and advice, as well as find out about local jobs and volunteering opportunities, all while having a first-hand opportunity to meet and engage with local employers and organisations.
At Lakes College, we believe that learning shouldn’t just be confined to the classroom. We want our students to have the experience to back up their qualifications, which is why every full-time student is required to complete 36 hours of work experience every year. This gives students a taste of the ‘real world’ of work, as well as the opportunity to develop valuable employability skills. Some of our students also have the opportunity to go on study trips at home and abroad, with recent trips including Barcelona, Berlin and Prague. Many of our courses also involve working in real environments; our Graduates Restaurant, Distinctions salon, motor vehicle workshops and Construction Skills Centre, are all fitted to industry standard and all of which provide invaluable experience to prepare you for your career in these areas.
Developing skills in English and maths is an essential ingredient to gaining employment and enhancing life skills. Having a qualification in English & maths will open up more career opportunities, better educational possibilities, a rise in salary potential and increase life satisfaction. If you’re aged 16-18 and studying full time, English & maths will be at the core of your study programme at Lakes College, alongside your vocational qualification.

LAKES COLLEGE& Our Students
I decided to study the Foundation Degree in Business Management after completing the Level 3 last year. I chose to study Business as I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do in the future and I believed that business would cover a wide variety of topics and would give me a range of different skills. The best thing about the course is how I have developed throughout it. The first year helped me understand my own skills and learn what I am capable of and the second year has taught me how to use those skills and develop them further.
APRIL NG
I decided to apply for college because it was more practical based with smaller assessments, rather than one at the end of each year, and this suited me best. The work load on the Apprenticeship Academy is challenging, but achievable, and the tutors take a lot of time to give us individual support. Once I complete my apprenticeship I hope to progress on to the HND and then go to university to study towards a degree in Engineering.

HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE, EARLY YEARS & EDUCATION NURSE
CADETSInterested in nursing? Our Nurse Cadets programme is run in partnership with the NHS and is specifically designed to inspire the next generation of nurses. This course aims to give students a wide range of hands-on experiences to set them up for their future career in nursing.
As part of the course, students carry out six week placements in both their first and second year of study, in different hospitals or departments across Cumbria. These placements help many of our students choose which area of nursing they have interests in for further study. Each student is paired up with a healthcare assistant, who acts as a buddy to provide support and guidance while on placement. While on their placement, students get to experience a wide range of different environments both within hospital and community settings.
Once you have completed the two year course, you can then go onto Higher Education and study Nursing at University in order to become a fully qualified nurse, or you can seek employment within the healthcare industry.
Interested? Applications for the Nurse Cadets programme opens in February 2017. For more information and to get a taste of what the course can offer you, why not come along to our open evening on Wednesday 15th February 2017.

If you have a strong sense of civic duty and a desire to help your community, there’s always the option of a career in uniform – from command and control, citizenship, and government policies to leadership, there are very few careers quite as satisfying as those in the Public Services. There’s so much more to this sector than the emergency services – on our courses, you’ll study what happens ‘behind the scenes’, plan for major incidents and explore criminology and its effect on society, preparing you for the mental and physical demands of life in the services.
