Finland - Invest in the Future of Sustainable Mining

“The government of Finland strongly promotes economic activities that are based on our diverse mineral resources and our expertise and innovation in the mining sector.”

Invest in Finland promotes foreign investments into Finland. Invest in Finland assists international companies in finding business opportunities in Finland and provides all the relevant information and guidance required to establish a business in Finland.

The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) serves as a national geoscientific information centre and provides data, testing and consulting services on the mineral deposits in the country.

State-owned Finnish Industry Investment Ltd partners with private investors, funding small to large mining operations and suppliers in the mining cluster.

Tukes, The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency, administers all permits and licenses.

Tekes, The Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation, invests and partners in research for sustainable mining, pushing the frontiers in green mining technology.

Welcome to Finland – Europe’s major producer of chromium and gold, with operating mines also producing copper, cobalt, feldspar, limestone, nickel, phosphate, quartz, silver, talc and zinc.

Finland has a strong mining tradition, a competitive and modern mining sector, and is striving for a green future. Mining in Finland benefits from a highly developed infrastructure, an ecient operating environment, security of tenure and political stability. From exploration to operations and markets to mine closure, the Finnish government oers a complete package to support mining investments.

Finland as the Premium Mining Destination in EuropeSTABILITY AND EXPERIENCE

Finland is one of the world’s safest and most secure countries for mining investment and also oers excellent potential for new discoveries. Ranked highly by global mining surveys, Finland is consistently rated among the top countries for mining policy and the clarity of its regulations. Finland’s mineral codes are up-to-date and praised for their transparent and fair legal processes as well as timely and ecient administration.

FISCAL FAIRNESS

Finland aims to make mining a profitable venture for those who pursue it, oering a competitive taxation regime with no royalties payable to the state. The state supports mining investments while firmly believing that mining operations should be in the hands of the private sector.

ADDRESSING EUROPE’S SUPPLY SECURITY

Finland stands out for its expanding mining sector in the European Union, where mining activity has declined over the years. With increasing concern within the EU about dependency on imports for important raw materials, Finland oers a real opportunity to enhance Europe’s supply security. The country’s reserves and resources cover more than half of the critical minerals listed by the EU Raw Materials Initiative.

Mining Potential Meeting Your Investment NeedsTOWARDS SUSTAINABLE MINING

Finland’s Green Mining program brings together dierent stakeholders to promote intelligent, minimum-impact mining. Environmental and social aspects are taken into account throughout the mining process from exploration to landscaping after mine closure. The vision of the Green Mining program is to make Finland a global leader of the sustainable mineral industry by 2020.

STRONG SUPPORT CLUSTER

Finland’s mining industry enjoys strong support from its world-class service providers and equipment manufacturers. Finland also has an excellent service infrastructure which allows for the outsourcing of mine development functions. Finnish mineral processing plants and metal production facilities are highly competitive in terms of their energy eciency and carbon footprint.

GEOLOGICAL EXPERT SERVICES

The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) assists the exploration and mining industry in many ways, from providing digital information and ore geology expertise to mineral processing pilot scale studies and environmental impact assessments. The GTK actively promotes mining in Finland.

PROMISING ZINC AND COPPER RESOURCES

The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) has recently evaluated copper and zinc resources in three important deposit types in Finnish bedrock to a depth of one kilometer. The evaluation includes volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS), porphyry copper, and Outokumpu types of mineral deposits.

Altogether, 42 areas that could contain undiscovered copper and zinc deposits of the VMS, porphyry copper or Outokumpu type were delineated in Finland. The areas are expected to contain approximately 60 undiscovered deposits.

At the 50% level of probability, the undiscovered copper-zinc resources in VMS, porphyry copper, and Outokumpu-type deposits in Finland are at least 3.7 million tons (Mt) of copper and 1.8 Mt of zinc. Comparison to the known copper and zinc resources indicates that about 71% of the copper and 68% of the zinc in VMS and Outokumpu-type deposits, and at least 98% of the copper endowment in porphyry copper deposits in Finland occurs in poorly explored or yet undiscovered deposits.
