The following gold producing companies have suspended operations during the quarter :-Ballarat Extension, New Garibaldi, Golden Fleece (United), Old Cosmopolitan, Cornish United, Edinburgh, and New Malakhoff Gold Mining, Companies. The principal reason for suspension has been through financial difficulties.

The claim and plant of the Golconda Gold Mining Company, Dead Horse, have been sold under execution. A. new company is about to be organized under the name of the New Golconda Gold Mining Company.

The Ballarat Pyrites Company, which commenced operatioDs about six months ago, ~or the purpose of extracting gold from quartz tailings, sludge, &c., have, after giving the new process a very' short trial, been compelled, by pressure of creditors, to sell the machinery, &c., the Llanberris Quartz Mining Company being the purchasers. ,

Two new companies have been started during the quarter for extracting gold from pyrites, &c. They have not been long enough in operation to judge of whether it will be a paying s'{Ieculation.

The Great North-west Gold Mining Company, holding one of the largest millIng areas in this district, and situated to the north'west of Ballarat, are now at a depth of 307 feet, being through the third rock. In COD sequence of the great flow of water they have only been able ,to sink three feet during the last twelve months-the flow of water being about 1,600 gallons per minute. They have now two sets of plunger pumps, one 20 inch and the other 18 inch, with which they hope to be able to contend against such a large quantity of water. The expenses in connection with the mine during the last twelve months have amounted to upwards of £10,000. '

The Chinese mining population are located principally at the Springs, Little Bendigo, and ,White Flat, and are generally engaged at sluicing and puddling in old shallow :workings.

The Cricket Reserve Gold Mining Company have commenced operations, and expect to be washin'g in a few days. ' , '

The Old Post OffiQe Hill and Union Quartz Mining Companies have not crushed any quartz during the past qu~ter; but 'have been engaged prospecting and opening up new ground~

QUARTZ MINING.

In the Standard Company's mine there was a very marked improvement in the quartz raised during the first part of the quarter, the average for the whole quarter rising to 6 dwts. 19-93 grs. per ton. This mine was worked on tribute. The tributors have now purchased the mine. The improved yield in this mine, coupled with the steady returns from Hiscock's Reef altogether, have given a fresh Impetus to quartz mining in this Division, and cO,mpanies ~ave, a~ain taken up the Scandinavian and

The Leviathan Company's ground, so far, has proved barely remunerative. A considerable iIl!-provement has tak~n place, however, during the la.tter portion of the quarter.

Union Jack and Glencoe. The Buninyong New (Union Jack) obtain steady yields in payable quantities. The Royal

George Company (Glencoe) has been reorganized, and set vigorously to work by a co-operative party, who are driving at a new and lower level for the gutter.

Green Hills. The Hopeful Company are obtaining gold in payable quantities. This is the only claim at work

on this lead. Durham Lead.

The gutter is proving little more than able to afford wages. Hopes are entertained that when the reefs are froved, better yields will be obtained. The claims at work are the National, Chinese Party, Moore 8 paddock, Garibaldi, Enfield, and Duke of Cornwall.

Scotchman's. The Buninyong Company have not had such large yields as usual during this quarter.

There is a slight improvement since the date of my last report. .A good many fresh claims have been taken up, and a few of the mines are yielding excellimt returns. A large portion of the lead from the Golden Stream claim at Scarsdale to the Try-again at Piggoreet, including the Scarsdale Extended. Golden Lake, Golden Horn, A tlas, and Try-again, was swamped out about the begining of the year, and had caused considerable distress amongst the working miners of that locality; after several weeks incessant baling, the Try-again was enabled to resume operations below, but it t<?ok nearly as many' months for the Atlas to succeed in drying the mine. The Golden Horn had still greater difficulty than either, nor was it until last week that they succeeded in reducing the water so as to admit of underground operations being resumed. Both parties are now at ,,:ork, and contributing very satisfactory returns from thei::- respective mines. The Golden Lake is sinking steadily, and expect to be soon through the rock-the water is light. 'l'he Scarsdale Extended, continually bailing. The Golden Stream averages about 80 ozs, a week. The eompany has taken up additional ground on the western side of the creek, in expectation of a branch lead from the Western Banges. Three other new claims have been taken up in the same locality, and in one of them (the Little Kitty) a very good prospect has been got.

The Wheal Kitty still gives magnificent dividends, £20 to £40 a fortnight is not an uncommon thing. '['he North Grenville (Lease) is giving moderate returns; the works at the new shaft are completed, and the whole of the workings below will be soon carried on from that shaft, as the old one is getting dilapidated.

Two engine claims on the ,Bed White and Blue Lead have been given up, not being able to pay expenses. The Little Western, on Warren's Lead, has been for eighteen months contending alone with the back water lodged along the old lead above the shaft, and as yet with no decided success.

The Chinese occupy almost exclusively all the old workings on the shallow ground along the Smythsdale Flat, as far as McLachlan's pre-emptive right, a distance of three miles. The Gulf Stream, for many months lying inactive, has been organized under a new title and proprietory, and work will be commel1ceo forthwith-the neighboring claims are doing exceedingly well. ,

, The Grand Trunk at Springdallah has commenced to give dividends. The Illiharook Co. report haviI,g struck gold in paying quantities.· ,

At Happy Valley the ,whole Jead is in the occuption of four new companies. The ground formerly occupied 'by the Volunteers and Grand Junction is now occupied by'a party called the UJ,lited Grand .J unction and Mugby Junction Co., who are getting better remunerated than the first companies ever did. The ground of the late Waverly, Lucky, and British, is, in each instanee, occupied by new parties. and paying well. . '. . . . .

Things are not so prosperous about Preston Hill. The Standard, Kangaroo, and NIl Desperandum, I are the only claims at present at ;work there, and as yet the results do not seem to be very encouraging.

A few small claims at Bottle Hill are doing well-the ground appears to be very patchy. Two engine claims, viz., Cornelia and Great Extended, have been discontinued; one other engine claim, the Lord Brouham, is at work there. .

At Derwent Jack's, two tresh'companies have started to work the lowel' portion of the lead-they have steam power. At Haddon a quartz vein has been discovered, and four good sized claims taken up. Upon one, the Southern Cross, a battery has been erected, and a trial crushing had, the result of which appears iJ?·the anIl;exed return.

Owing to the great quantity of rain which has fallen during the quarter, and the consequent abundance of water, sluicing has been carried on extensively, principally by the Chinese. None of the sluicing parties have, however, yet washcd up. .

At Sulky Gully, Wallacc and party (four men) got 67 ounces during the quarter. At Red Streak, the Australasian Oompany bottomed at 185 feet, and sunk a further depth of

45 feet in the reef, when a drive was opened out and put in a distance of 45 feet, at which point a rise of 4 feet was put up, and washdirt struck; the machinery is all erected, except the puddling machines. At Slaughteryard, the Royal Standard Company have cOl1,lmenced work; the shatt is down 75 feet, viz., 45 through rock, and the remainder gravelly clay and drift. The yield for the quarter is

Jupiter Company 302 5 12 The Port Phillip Co~pany crushed during the quarter 15,151 tons of quartz, which yielded

8,4120zs. 15 dwts. of gold, inelusive of 405 ozs. 3 dwLs. obtained from pyrites; the quantity of pyrites operated on was not kept; I am, therefore, unable to giye it separately.

The Clunes Company paid during the quarter dividends amounting to £6,831, being £3 9a. per scrip. or £69 per original share. Driving has been let on the various levels at from £3 to £24 per fathom, the average price being £8 4s.; stoping, at 3a. 10d. to 6s. per ton, average 48. 9d.; and sinking winzes, from £6 lOs. to £8 per fathom, average £7 Is. Two hundred and sixty men are employed on the mine. , The Victoria Company crushed during the quarter 4,837 tons of quartz, which yielded 2,459 ozs.

8 dwts. of gold, and paid dividends amounting to £3,360, being £3 lOs. per scrip. The engine-shaft is 685 feet deep, and, though the water is heavy, the sinking is pretty good; the eastern cross-cut has been driven 350 feet to the eaat of the engine-shaft; the north shaft has been sunk 14 feet, and holed to No.7 level; the western cross-cut has been driven 150 feet, making a distance of 250 feet to the • weat of engine-shaft. The whole of the stopes throughout the mine continue to look well, and the price for stoping varies from 6s. 5d. to 9s. per ton. About 90 men are employed on the mine.

The South Clunes Company crushed during the quarter 2,052 tons of quartz, which yielded 6740zs. 5 dwts.; the south shaft has been sUI:\k to the 244 feet level, and driving .begun northward on the reef; driving' has been in progress at the 172 feet level north, and stoping on the 100 and 172 feet levels; driving has also been resumed from the engine-shaft 223 feet level south. About 50 men are employed on the mine. . .

The Clunes United Company's tributors crushed during the quarter 1,272 tons of quartz, which yielded 293 ozs. 7 dwts. of gold. .

The New North elunes Company has sunk the whim shaft 38 feet, making a total depth of 458 feet; the No.1, or 240 feet level south, is in 212 feet along the course of the lode, and in payable stone the whole distance; at 60 feet from the shaft the reef was cross-cut and found to be 38 feet wide; a rise was subsequently put up. and the cap of the reef found to be 19 feet from the bottom of the level. No.1 level north is being carried along to meet the rise from No.2 level, and is in 21 feet, the quartz being good. No.2., or 330 feet level south, is in 120 feet from the shaft; the lode being small, driving has been temporarily suspended. No. 2 level north is in 134 feet; the lode in this place being also small, work has been stopped; a rise is up 28 feet al a distance of 60 feet from the shaft, and in good quartz. The guides for cages are being put in the shaft; the erection of the battery, engine, &c" has been completed, and crushing permanently begun on the 23rd September, when every. thing was found to work most satisfactorily, .

The Clunes Alluvial Company obtained, up to the 20th August, 1050zs. 16 dwts. of bar gold; the Board. having prospected the ground to a considerable extent, and finding the yields rapidly falling off, d?termined to eall for tenders to work it on tribute. The mine has been let on. the following terms, VIZ. :-15 per eent. royalty, £10 per week water-rent, £20 per week rent of plant, &e., and a percentage of profit after £2 per week wages has been ]:laid. The amount of bar gold already obtained by the tributors amounts to 105 ozs. 16 dwts., excluslve of 300zs. 13 dwts. of alluvial un melted gold-total, 1360zs. 9 dwts. The tributors are sanguine as to an increase in the yield as soon as the necessary dead work has been finished. , .

The Imperial Company have let their claim on tribute to a party of miners from Clunes, who, from present appearances, are likely to make good wages.

. The True.Blue Company's leased claim still continues to yield good dividends; they have now three sets of tributors at work. ' . '

The Morning Star Company have·~truck a new reef, about a hundred yards to the west of their old workings, from which they are raising very good stone. . . , The Manhem Company have taken up a reef on the Yankee Ranges, and, from the prospects Qbtained, there is every indication of this becoming a permanently remunerative line of reef. .

The Eureka Company. have registered their claim on account of influx of water.

The winter has been more inclement, and of longer duration, than almost any previous, winter during several years. The almost incessant rains have continued during m.ore than thirty days, and hav~ not yet s~bsid~d. The seasonable rains of the quarter have kept the sluices constantly, at work, and the results obtained have been most remunerative. From the appe:jl"ance of the springs, and from the 'quantity of rain already fallen; it is expected that there will be no scarcity of water for mining purposes' before the end of the year, and many of the claims will not be washed down before that time.

The Rocky Mountain Sluicing Company, Spring' Creek, are l.rogressing with the blasting of their tail· race ; but it will take about two years to complete it, an ,in the meantime, the company are working their claim with the old tail.race.

Woolshed, Eldorado, grc. The winter rain~ have had a beneficial effect on these localities also, glVlng plenty' of water

without flqods, and the miners generally are satisfied with their earnings. , The Ovens Cement Crushing Company are ereeting machinery on their claim at Sebastopol, and

they expect 1.0 begin crushing in about three weeks. l'his company haTe also purchased another cement claim at the,Bevil's Elbow, whieh is said to be rieh both in gold and tin.

The deep claims at Eldorado continue to yield well; but., notwithstanding its known richness, the ground below the Wellington Company's claim has not been touched yet. The ground of Ovens

, Gold ,and Tin Mining Company is in dispute. part of it being claimed by two other companies, viz., the Perseverance Company and the Eldorado Extended Company.

Preparations are being made by the two Melbourne companies to work the ground which they have applied for on lease. It is situate below the Ovens Gold and Tin Company's claim, and is thought to be equally as rich as that claim. .

Bowman's Forest. A number of the claims in the deep ground are unable to be worked on aecount of exce~sive

drainage, and in the shallow ground (with the exception of a few elaims on Boogogie Creek) very little is doing. .

One or two new reefs have been taken up here, but no crushings have taken place from them, the roads being toobad for carting the quartz to the m~l.

• M,yrtlflford and Vicinity. Several new reefs have been opened on the Buffalo and Basin Creek ranges; the atone from

some of them looks remarkably well, especially that obtained from the claims on United and Mountain View lines of reef. The erushing from two on the United averaged I oz. 5 dwts. and 3 oz. 2 dwts. per ton ·respectively. .

The Waterloo Company have suspended the driving of their tunnel for the present, as the late rams have caused too great an influx of water into th,eir _workings.

I have the honor to report that, in consequence of the great rainfall during the winter, both the sluicers and puddlers are actively employed, with every prospect of a good supply of water to carry them well into .the summer; in fact, this division has not been so well supplied for several years as it is at the present time.

There has been more quartz crushed, but, owing to the absence of the manager of one of the mills, I was unable to get the result, but will include it in my next return.

Owing to the extremely bad weather, mining has been almost at a standstill, even many of the quartz claimholders being obliged to suspend working, from a superfluity of water in their shafts and workings. A party have Bet in below the Twist's Creek Mill to work the tailings for mundie, but, not having had a crushing, the returns are not as yet known; however, a small assay gave at the rate of 2~ ozs. gold to the ton,

There is no change to report.in reference to mining operations, Cla~mholders, if not at all times realizing satisfactory wages, 'still adhere to their claims, for the simple reason that they cannot better themselv:es elsewhere. The weather has. for the latter part of the quarter, been so wet as greatly to retard the working of the creek claims. The l';Iil Desperandum, referred to in previous reports, a}?pears to have firmly established itself; while the Chinese Company, adjoining (above the junction), will soon have their tail.race cut as far as to enable them to open the lower end of their claim.

I may mention with respect to quartz mining that a prospecting claim was lately registered, but no work has as yet been effected. . '

A reference to the quarterly returns shows that ;the anticipations contained in my previous report, of the probability of a. lI!-arked in.cr~ase in the quanti~v of quartz crushed during this quarter, has been fully borne out. ThiS mcrease IS m a great measure owmg to the abundant supply of water, enabling some of our mills to work which had before been for many months unemployed.

Of the five steam-engines used on quartz, but returned as being" Idle," I believe three, if not four, of them will be at work during the ensuing quarter; and 1 may here note that two new steam milla are being ereCted, and also two small water-powers, all to be employed in crushing operations. •

Although the Running Creek reefs have not, to the present, yielded quite so well as the proprietors had hoped, there are ample reaSOns for stating that quartz milling throughout this division (excepting, perhaps, the Morse's Creek portion) is in a healthy and satisfactory condition, affording likewise reasonable grounds for supposing that branch of mining industry will be extended, and acquire a local importance even greater than it at present commands.

Eleven new reefs were registered hl?re during the eurr~lnt quarter, but none of them require special notice, excepting one found on the leftlbranch of the Buckland River, a large district hitherto almost totally unprospected. The locality is about 25 miles from Bright.

The steady continuance of the run of good ground now being driven through by the tributora in the prospeeting claim Premier Lead, Morse's Creek, has induced a local capitalist to invest £800 in the purchase of a fourth ·share in the Morse's Creek Co.'s wet frontage claim, which last week again started to work under the most favorable auspices. This company is now raising very excellent wash. dirt while opening up their main drive. .

In the Birthday Prospecting Claim the owners will comm-snce blocking out within 18 days, when a weekly yield of from 60 to 100 Qunces is calculated upon.

The unprecedented continuanee of wet weather has almost put an end, for the present, not only to alluvial mining in our river beds; but likewise in the shallow bank claims; however. the quantity of gold thus raised has always been comparatively small during the winter months.

. At Alexandra several q~artz reefs have been opened, some of which present promising appearance~, and ~he older reefs contmue .to yield largely. . of each succeSSIve quarter being higher than the previous; this circumstance, taken in connection with the number of different claims il,l which the quartz has been obtained, the deficiency of suitable appliances, the imperfect state of the roads (leading latterly to a suspension of traffic), and the high prices charged for crushing, should determine its character to some extent.

The alluvial claims on U. T. Creek are being quickly worked out, only fifty.five men being employed on the'creek at present. At its head, the Eldorado Reef, which appears to hal'e contributed to the·a1.lr~ferous character of t~e creek, is assumin~, as work progresse~, a more de;fined appearal!ce, 'and exhIbIts coarse gold, w.here It has been opened, m several of the claIms on the hne. The Ulllted Kingdom, Shakespeare, Perfect Cure, and other reefs, are also becoming more permanent looking.

Amongst the discoveries consequent on the influx of population to Mount Pleasant, the most import~t are those at Ghin Ghin, near Yea, and Maindample, near Mansfield. At the former place the povulation has largely increased, and, as anticipated in my special report of 31st ·ultimo, opcrations are bemg extended to creeks of a similar appearance to that first opened. No large yields have· been reported, but the larger number of the miners are obtaining payable results. .

The .workings at J\!aindample are confined to quartz; the reefs appear to be of a permanent character, and the stone being raised is generally of a promising appearance, but its 'actual value ha~ .not as yet been ascertained, owing to the absence of machinery. , The Cameron's Creek workings (Mount Buller), having been nearly deserted during the winter months, are again a source of attraction i... several parcels of coarse gold have recently been disposed of, amongst which was an 8-oz. nugget. The difficulties to be contended with, referred to in former reports, render it an undesirable field for those entirely without capital; but to those prepared to adopt proper appliances, and to co.operative companies, it offers special inducements.

The quartz workings in the vicinity of Mount Buller have not realized expectations. The alluvial workings at Hell's Hole still afford remunerative employment ~o about fifty miners. Mining at Jamieson still cpntinues in a very depressed state; the capital and labor expended in

quartz mining during the past year has been in a great m.easure lost, so far as regards the results .obtained to the present time; but it is not improbable that, with proper management, many of the mines new abandoned may, at a future time, be remuneratively worked. The population has undergone a 'considerable diminution during the quarter; many of the alluvial claims on the River Goulburn, for a distance .of five miles north of t)le township of Jamieson, hewever, continue payable.

Mining at Benalla is .not in a progressive state.' The number of claims registered during the quarter in the several parts of the division is an

important basis on which to form an estimate of the mining population; many of the miners in the Mount Pleasant district not being holders .of miners' rights, are unable to effect registration; while, therefore, every care has been taken in the compilation of the population returns for that part of the district, the results must be considered as only approximate. ' ,

The quantity of alluvial gold disposed of in Alexandra during the quarter was 934 .oz. 19 dwts. 12 grs.

The Eldorado Company and the Try.again Company have not yet washed up. . The quantity of alluvial gold bouglit by the bank during the quarter is 731 ozs. The greater

portion of the alluvial gold comes from the Dig River division. .

I have the honor to report that the late yields frem some of the .old quartz claims, viz., Hunt's and the A 1, have given a greater impetus to quartz mining in this subdivision than has been exhibited for the last twelve months. The Try.again Company have completed the erection of their mill, which consists of one battery of four revolving stamps, and'they are now engaged crushing stone.

The Drummond's Peint Gold Mining Company have been flooded out, and will probably not be ' able to resume work-fer at least a menth or six weeks. . . ,

The Rose of Denmark Company have let their mine on tribute for two years. As yet the tributors have not done much, as they are principally engaged in opening out new ground.

All the claims situated on the Homeward·bound line of reef, with the exception of the Raspberry United Cempany, are at work, and prove te be payable. . . '

I regret to' have to report that, owing to the late heavy fleods, alluvial mining is nearly at a standstill. The alluvial miners located on Gaffney'S Creek and the Goulburn River have suffered severely. The Goulburn Valley Sluicing Company have had their dam carried away, and the works of the mine injured to the amount of seven or eight hundred pounds. They have abandened wo~k at present, but I believe they intend commencing operations afresh when the flood subsides. ,

The decrease in the popUlation is attributable te the . late heavy floeds having caused many alluvial miners to seek cmpleyment em.the new goldfields near Yea and Alexandra. '

* The tonnage is estimated in this cnse. A crushing of a large quantity of stone, say from 200 to 300 tOM, took place jn the Surprise claims, the result being about 7 ozs. The tonnage not being ascertainable I nave not included it above.

I have the honor to report that the depression which set in in 1865 continues to be more and more. felt. The crushings for this quarter are less by 200 ozs. than those for the last quarter, and show a total of, say 5,600 OZS., as against 20,000 ozs. for the same quarter in 1866 ; while the crushing power has increased by 41 stampers. The average yield has fallen from 1 oz. 7 dwts. 6'62 grs. to 12 dwts. 14'69 grs., or lesa than one·half. '

The Age of Progress has had an excellent yield of 181 ozs. from 200 tons of stone. Nos. 1 and 2 North, Morning Star, known as "Oherry's" claim, have had t>lso a very good yield,

averaging 1 oz. 2 dwts. 22'24 grs. per ton. The Prospectors have not had as good a yield as during the last quarter, but their ground is

improving. , The Alps Great Oentral have closed up their shaft for the present, after reaching a depth of 382

feet in their lowest level, or 482 feet below the platform of their first shaft. The stone proved too poor to pay at such a depth.

New and unsuccessful crushings have been had from the British Atlantic and the Great Atlantic; but the first-named has since come upon some very excellent stone.

The N ever·mind Prospectors have also had a further find in their ground. The new reef is 5 feet wide, and rich as well as soft and facile to work. ~ ,

The :Franklyn Company, higher on the same spur, have entered into an agreement with the owners of the Golden Bar Crushing Mill, and eXp'cct to crush as soon as their tralllway shall have been laid. The claim is expected to be good, and will be easily worked. .

,The Leviathan Amalgamated Oompany have the heaviest return for this quarter, namely, over 1,400 ozs. 'fhe claim is looking well, and the present yield of about 100ozs. per week is likely to continue for some months. Nothing new has been 'struck in the ranges during the quarter, and the extreme'severity of ,vhat we call the spring has caused many miners to quit the creek claims they had been working. I trust it will result in the banks of the river, on which drift is found at a height of aBC

much as 500 and 600 feet, being prospected and worked for alluvial gold.

BIG RIVER SUBDIVISION.

Mr. ,Hugh St. H. Blair, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

I have the honor to report that quartz mining in the Big River subdivision still continues in a very depressed condition, only two of the mines are at work, viz., the Luck-'s.all and the Unknown.

, The alluvial miners appear to be making fair wa!.;es; and. as 'they are principally working bank. claims, they have not suffered any damage from the late heavy floods.

T~tal Quartz Tail- } I' 9104 ---;-o1~13'96 1 630 ~ mgs and Cement ' ,

I havtl the honor ,to report an improvement in mining affairs in this division. during the past three months, ' "

Severa,l new reefs have ·been opened, and on some old reefs; that had been unworked for a con-siderable time claims have been taken up, and good returns have bec'n obtaiued therefrom. ..'

Although our richest claims have not 'produced 90 much gold as in the previous quarter of this year, other claims on the sal)1e liues are yielding very rich quartz, amongRt which may be mentioned Lazarus~ claim on the New Chum Reef, and the Confidence Company's on Victoria Reef; and on most of our reefs better results' are being 'obtained. .

I have registered several prospecting quartz claims taken up at Marong, most of which have reported payable gold from the surfaee.- Several other adjoining claims 'have been taken up in consequence. A trial lot from Wilson's claim on Wilson's Reef yielded as muohas 4 ozs. per ton.

In my last I reported having registered an alluvial prospecting claim at Myers' Creek. This claim did not prove to be very rich, but several good claims were bottomed near it, and it was thought that a rich lead was discovered. A. great TUsh Bet in, and in. about a month after the prospectors had found gold, about four thousand person,s. were )ocated there. '1;he sinking was from 30 to 50 feet, a.nd the lead was traced for a considerable distance. A. great many holes were Bunk, and in many cases with satisfactory res1l1ts; but the ground was not found rich enoug~ to maintain so large a population, a.nd it is now reduced to about one.fourth of·what it· was some two months since •. It is believed, however, that most of those who are now on the ground will find profitable employment for some time to come. .

A few days since I regi8t~red an. alluvial prospecting claim, taken up near Lockwood, the applica.nt for which reported having obtained an average of 1 dwt. to .the bucket. . ." ;

At Pottery Flat and Huntley there·is not quite so much doing. ,partly, owing to the tllsh'to:,thtl Myers' Creek diggings, and partly. to the flooding of claims after the late ,heavy rains; ·blltmost of the large companies are doing well and have very good prospects.

, The quarter just closed has not been productive of any improvement in mining matters in this division, owing. principally, to the great rush to the Alexandra diggings, situated on its outskirts, and to the continued rains, which have kept the creeks and alluvial claims constantly flooded. Several quartz as well as creek and alluvial claims are exempted in consequence.

Reedy Creek Quartz Mining is not at present very flourishing. , The Shepherd) Reef had an excellent yield. and the tributors were well satisfied. The Seek-a'nd~Find, 'I.'hompson's Reef, parallel with the old Albert Reef, have also an excellent

prospect, as per above returns. ., The Reedy Creek Company's claim is still being prospected for some of the rich leads which once

rendered it so famous. 'I.'he Sailor's Reef is yielding payable returns. The IJeviathan, Captain's. and others, are abandoned. The Magenta and 80lferino iuunel has been exempted .. ' .'" ., I " '

A new linc of reef. called the "Duke of Edinburgh," at the head of Nuggetty Gully, Reedy Oreek, has been opened, and several claims taken up, but owing to the un passable state. of the roads, and the distance from machinery to test the quurtz, no results have yet been ascertained.· ,

Quartz mining. at the Sunday Creek. is still progressing; and Ryan and 00. are putting a tunnel into their claim, crossing the numerous leaders and quartz veins which intersect the spur on which it is situated. All the other claims are at work, and it is the opinion of the claimholders on the ereek that there are other payable reefs in the vicinity, if the country was prospected.

The Perseverance Company, Mount William, is a new company, and ·have plenty of quartz, whieh is reported as .payable, and they contemplate erecting machinery forthwith.

At the Kilmore Diggings, Bourke and party are crushing all before them, and the yield, as reported, speaks well for its producLi,eness, the labor consisting chiefly in carting.

The Strath Creek Gold Mining Company, and the Sailor Jack Reef Oompany, Strath Creek, have abandoned operations, and the machinery is idle. ,

The battery at" Flat Lead. near Yea, has been crushing stone for the proprietors of the Halfway Reef and others, but no returns have been sent in. The quantity, however, would not be large.

The claims on the Golden Crown Reef, Murrundindi Creek, are stjll being worked, but, as the nearest machine is at Yea, a distance of 17 miles, it is impossible to cart with any prospect of pront, especially in the winter months. The last trial crushing, however, from Nos. 1 and 2 amalgamated, gave 10 ozs. 5 dwts., or 2 ozs. 1 dwt. per ton. .

The Providence Mining Ass'ociation, Yea, as also all the claims on the Carrier's and Providence Reefs, are at a stand still, being flooded out. ., , "'. .. , ..

20

The Freemason's Company, the Dunrobin, Perseverance, Catherine, and other claims at Tea-tree Creek, have ceased working, the miners having vrincipaIJy left for Ghin-Ghin or Alexandra. .

'fhe Welcome Company, Tea.tree, have finished their water-shaft, 226 feet, and will commence to raise qnart~ i~mediately. They have about 400 tons of good looking stone to raise, and the machinery havmg Just been thoroughly overhauled, will crush without delay. ,

The Band of Hope Company are still driving_ a tunnel to catch the" Welcome" line of reef, and are in about 450 feet.

The Enniskillen Company, Tea-tree Creek, have established a connection between their tunnel, 800 feet, and main shaft, and are engaged in bringing stone to grass. Eight men are constantly employed, and the shareholders are so well satisfied that they contemplate erecting machinery of their ~~ .

Alluvial mining in the district is very dull. The Chinese at Reedy Creek can do little but fossick, as the floods prevent them working their creek claims. -With the approach of summer no doubt the yields will increase and prospects .improve. The alluvial claims at 'fea-tree, Boundary Creek, Snob's Creek, and Murrundindi Creek, are for the present abandoned, although payable gold has been got.

The population returns show a eonsiderable decrease, caused by the rushes which have taken place at Yea, Myers' Flat, &c. The alluvial miners of the division have suffered severely from the flooding of their claims, and as the, rains continue their prospects of resuming regular work is distant. The rainfall in .the district is said to be unprecedented. Fortunately the produce of our quartz reefs has been. very good, an.d the general yield of gold for the year will be quite equal to those of past years. '

22 , I have the honor to report· that mllllDg operations in this division have recently been more

p,":omising. A very rich reef, the" Sir Henry Barkly," has been struck at Elysian Flat, and. out of a trIal crushing of 27 tons; 243 ozs. was obtained: . Sili~ular enough to say, this claim was abandoned by the prosp, ectors, Wyeth aI1d Co., 'but immediately after taken up by Roberts and party, who, after working It for,a month disco~ered one of the finest reefs ever opened out in this division.

. In my last report I intimated that the'Nil Desperandum Comp9ny had called for tenders for the purchase of a "crushing plant to be erected on their own claim;' on the Welbourne' reef. I am now pleased to observe that their object has been attained, and its erection will be completed in about four week!; ~~?~e .. '. I have the honor to report that an increase of 306 miners has taken place'in this division during the last quarter.

Several small rushes h;tve taken place. in which some nuggets of unusual size have been found; one of 30 ozs. 12 dwts. was obtained at the Amherst Pound Hush; but the leads recently found are shallow, and not of great extent, so that we cannot expect them to yield for any great length of time. '

The Hoffnung Company at Mount Greenock South has broken down for the third time, on touching the main lead, for the want of sufficient steam power to keep down the water. '

In alluvial mining there is very little to report. The New Holland Company are now erecting their new pumping machinery, and it is expected that in a few weeks this claim will be in full work. The Golden Lake and Phcenix Companies, Homebush, are noW" let on tribute, and are yielding very good returns. A. new crushing machine has been lately erected at Fiddler's Creek, and the prospects of quartz mining in this neighborhood are very good. Innumerable reefs exist in this locality, but owing to tho enormous expense attendant upon carting stone to the mills at A.voca and Redbank, reefing has not hitherto paid.

The late rushes to Myers' Flat and Alexandra diggings have caused a fluctuation in the number of miners of this division, but the population is again gradually increasing by the return of ,those who were attracted by the glowing accounts from the new rushes, Some new ground has been taken up about Tunstall's, which, aHhough not extensive, promises to be payable. The sinking is dry, and from 6 to 25 feet deep.

, . The reefs in this division are generally looking promising; in several of them rich stone has been struck. A new reef has lately been opened at Wattle Flat, to the westward of Inkerman, which has yielded good lookin!\ specimens,.and on wbich reef a good many claims have been taken up. The stone in the Goldsborough Reef is reported to maintain its exceedingly rich character, although the returns are not publicly known. •

I have the honor to report that very little advancement appears in the progress of mining interests in'this district during the past three months. '

On the Maxwell's Reef the Prospector's Company',have su,n,k deeper and. are working at the lowest level, but without marked success as yet, although their en~ine has at length thoroughly drained the ground for a long distance both north and south of them. ~Leieester Reef.-The Bird in Hand Company are still operating on payable stone, and have six men at work. The Leicester Company have sunk to stone apparently payable, but are not at present working.

On the Old Inglewood neef ground has been taken up by three men (Ireland and par,ty), who applied for a lease, and have been well rewarded for their enterprise, by obtaining a large body of stone, averaging 15 dwts. per ton.' The ground has laid idle some two years, 'although known to have been highly productive formerly.

The Royal Standard Company have erected a whim to drain the reef, and thus enable them to work from \vater level. Their prospects are tolerably fair. '

On the Jersey neef the company of that name and· the Victoria Company are prospecting. The holders of ground on the Odin. Reef have registered.

March Reef.-The lfarch' Prospectors Company have suspended operations in the mine until the ground, shall have been drained by the new engine of the Unity Oompany, now in course of erection; meanwhile the company have let their machine for six months, to a party of two, who have commenced crushing for the public, after making some improvements in the tables. The company are about to let the mine on tribute. The Independent Oompanr ,have also suspended operations below water, until drained by the Unity Oompany's Engine. The mme has lately been let on tribute for six months; the tributors are now crushing about SO tons, expected to average t oz. The Unity Company still main· tains its pre.eminent position, as will be seen by the' total amount of quartz crushed and the yield of gold therefrom, viz., 2,909 tons, 2,004 oz. 15 dwts. 12 gr.; or an average of. IS dwts. 18"79 grs. :per ton. Prospects continue as good. or better. Late operations have been chiefly from 110 to 190 feet deep, north and south a length of 300 feet, with a stope of from 80 feet to 90 feet at the south end. The underlay continues east; 41 men are employed on wages, besides 18 engaged in various contracts. The new engine, in course of erection by Messrs. Horwood of Sandhurst, is of 4O-horse power, cylinder 18 i~" w~th 10 in. pumlls, plunger, and draw lift; contract price, including er~ctioll, £1,944 •. This fine engme will effectually dram the whole extent of reef, and prove of almost mvaluable serVIce to the surrounding properties.

The Reality Company have lately struck some golden leaders, which are expeeted to lead on to the same body of stone as that in the adjoining .Unity Claim. They are now crushing a trial lot of 40 tons.

A good crushing has been obtained from the Cambrian Reef, 27 tons having produeed 21oz. 16 dwts. of gold. • '

There is scarcely anything to report respecting alluvial mining at Inglewood. A few smaU lots of cement from the Deep Lead have, as usual, proved just about payable. Two unimportant rushes have taken place, one at Simmond's Reef, the other at Foote's Paddock, situated north of Inglewood, 3 and 5 miles respectively; in each case the ground was soon deserted, save by one or two who still remain. '

I have to remark that while many miners are complaining of the difficulty of obtaining remunerative employment, the tailings from the various quartz machines have been eagerly sought after by parties of Chinamen, one party of whom have removed hither from Sandhurst, and all appear to be doing well. .

At Jericho the' Prince of Wales Company have sunk their shaft 60 feet deeper, and are now advertising for tenders for putting in cross-cuts to work the reeffrQm that level.

A small rush has taken place between Tunstall's and Sinnott's, resulting in a few payable claims. At, Korong there is very little doing, although it is worthy of notiee that cement is being carted

all the way to Inglewood to be cmshed, at a cost of £1 per ton cartage. There are doubtless, many cement hills near Korong that would prove highly remunerative

if treated by a machine at hand.

Owing to the late heavy rains, a considerable impetus has been given to alluvial mininer in the neighbor~o?d of Victoria and adjoil;ling gullies. Sev~ral .large finds are reported. The Duke of Edinburgh Oompany, Pyrenees Reef, are sinking their shaft to a further dept~ ~f 100 feet. The Slaughter-yard Reef Oompany are b~sy e~ecting their new machinery, and are also rIDsmg stone. The new reef, Star of the East, Stuart MIll, stIll continues to yield steady returns, and is getting wider; it is now 3 feet thick.

S. Scotson has been shifting his. machinery, and has crushed nothing during the past three months. '

IIi a. small gully near Vaughan eight men have been employed, more or less, during the' past two years, the whole extent of ground comprising about three acres. One claim produced '£500 worth of gold in nine months, a man and a boy only working, the sinking being about 20 feet, Nuggets, from' 15 to 31 ozs. in weight, were obtained. '

Another claim y~elded 25 oz. in two tubs, 12 feet sinking, and generally the claim has been highly remunerative. I'

A tllird claim, 4 feet sinking, yielded a nugget weighing 84 oz. 12 dwt. ' It may be rem'arked this ground had for years been' overlooked and considered barren.

Quartz Mining.

Quartz ~ining during the past qua~ter requires, no particular comment, with the ex~ept.ion of one party (five In number) who occupy a claIm on Cattle s Reef. The value and extent of thIS hne of reef can be scarcely estimated at the present time; but the indications of a permanent and well-defined line are so apparent, that any anticipations of future success may be r.onsidered well grounded.

It would appear they have a well-defined reef at a depth from the surface of 70 to 80 feet, and that the body of quartz.is 7 or 8 feet thick .. This, according to. their returns, has yi~lded Ii oz. to the ton and as they are equally sanguine as to the: future YIeld from the quartz, It can be safely affirmed that they are the for.tunate possessor.s of a very valuable claim. The returns of the next quarter from this claim will in all probability be of a startllng character.

I have the honor to report that the returns for the quarter ending September proves the fact that we are not retrogressing. The mining population have been increased by not less than 371 persons in number. This is attributable to the seasonable falls of rain, which have continued at· short intervals from the commencement of the quarter. Situated so much above the level of the circumjacent country the heaviest rains soon run off: Had we the means to conserve the season's rainfall, mining in this division would not only prove far more remunerative, but permanent. Although raceowners are even now in the receipt of large sums, yet they are frequently unable to supply the demand for sluicing and puddling purposes.

. The Astley Company are erecting a second engine. They have also purchased from an outside district 10 heads of stampers, on the revolving principle .

. A rush of about 70 miners has taken place at Yandoit. From 3 to 5 dwts. to the load has been obtained.

Gray's rush, also, at the head of Shicer's Gully, in 30 feet sinking, gives from 3 to 5 dwts. with 1~ foot in thickness of washdirt; 5 dwts, to the tub have in some cases been obtained. Five holes are bottomed, and many more are going down.

At New Nuggetty, Yandoit, about 40 or 50 men are at work in shallow ground; 3 nuggets, one being of considerable size, have been obtained. 0

Puddling and sluicing operations are being actively carried on throughout the division. Iveson's Reef, Deep Creek . ...:.Iveson and Co. are driving from their main shaft both northerly

and southerly. 2 ozs. 3 dwts. 8 grs. per·ton has been obtained from the west face of the reef; not. . withstanding this, they contemplate cutting the reef at a much greater depth, for the purpose of ascertaining the value of the claim. The present depth is but 65 feet. .

Ajax Reef, Wombat Hill.-Pope and party are advantageously working in this claim. The reef is well developed, in a width of 4 feet, increasing in proportion to the depth, the stone proving far better in the lowest levels; 18.dwts. to the ton has been obtained this quarter.

Doctor's Reefs.-The Swiss Mountain, Warrior, and Pitcher's Quartz Companies, are vigorously working, and obtaining remunerative returns, the depths being from 40 feet to 160 feet, and increasing in breadth to 8 feet in some parts of the reef; and, also,' continuously increasing in proportion to the' depth of workings. From 7;t dwts. to 12i dwts. to the ton was obtained during the quarter ..

Christmas Reef, Yandoit.-· The company are now raising stone from the east face of the reef, from which good crushings are expected. Sometime since 3 ozs. 4 dwts. was obtained from, the west face, and the reef being well defi~ed there is every prospect of the claim continuing to pay. The yield for the quarter averages 11 dwts. 8 grs. . ,

Reynold's Reef.-This is a newly opened-up reef at Sailor's Creek, near Bryce's Flat, the greatest depth yet sunk being 30 feet, yet the satisfactory result of t oz. to the ton was obtained.

Commissioner's Reef.-LuciDi and Co. are flooded; the depth is 80 feet; a new engine will be shortly e.rected. r

Scandanavian Reef.-A company is formed to work this reef, the depths of the old shaft and workings was about 90 feet from grass, and worked by a whim only, from which contrivance f oz. to the ton wasol;ltained. The reef is about 3} feet in breadth. They are protected for the purpose of erecting machinery. .

Melvin's Reef.-- Wilson Company are ~orking at a, depth of 40 feet. ,fJ.. well defined reef, 3 feet 6 inches broa.d, has now been struok. Nearly dwts. to the ton is the result of a small crushing 9f 35 tons of quartz. '

A new rush to .Lockwood has taken place, but I have not visited it, as I am not awar.e U' It 1S 1n my district. A decrease both in yield of gold and number of men will be observed, causes stated on other page; as also the falling off in the yield of some of our-principal mines, viz., Beehive, Union, and Frazer and Co.'s claim on Eaglehawk. , .

The decrease in quantity of quartz cruslied,· this quarter, and consequent reduction in yield of gold, is principally in consequence of the South Eaglehawk Co. having crushed but 638 tons in Lhe three months, consequent upon, re-Ietping the mine and plant: they, have, now sparted again, and, are cross-cutting for the10de at 300 feet from surface. , ' .

The Beehive also has done but little in the way of raising stone this quarter, being principally , engaged in cross-cu,tting to the west for the reef which they anticipate striking shortly.

, The Eagl~hawkUnionCompany, and, Fra~er's Claim adjoining northward, have considerably fallen off in quantity. tlie lode having been cut off in both claims by a dyke of hard greenish rock, which has beep. !!un~ i:q.to to a depth of 13 feet without any change. taking place. ... ,

A small rush'to the alluvial took place' on Fiddler's Flat, in' consequence of an 18 oz. nugget having been found there, but nothing of any consequence has been discovered since. ,. ,

The iat~heavyand'e~?tinu011:s ,r.~s have gr(ll!-tly retarded all]lv;ial mining, particularly in and about Strangways, 'and on .the Loddon nver. . '

The river claims at Anderson's Creek have all been suspended during the winter quarter. At Queenstown, the few Europeans engaged in alluvial operations are "paddocking" old abandoned

gullies, which involves ~ome very' considerable exoavations. as the whole of the ground embraced in such claims has to be removed to get a.t the small 'patches of ;washdirt found between the old workings, By admeasureme,nt I find the average yield only remunerates the excavator at the small rate of lid. per cubic yard; and I am infonned that about 7s. 'per diem .per 'man is seldom exceeded, and is abou.t the UBQ.al earning,of the best workmen 60 employed., .

The. returns from quartz havela1A,31y been very satisfactory, rich, quartz: having been struck in several clalms. .

. From t~e Perseveran~e Reef, :vhich . had been abandoned, a new body of stone has been struck at a depth of Slxty feet; a t~lal crushlllg of four tons, ,recently taken from the same, has given an average

. of 11 ozs. to the ton; this is the more surprising, as the surface quartz yielded only 3 oz. to the ton, and should give encouragement to the miner to sipk to greater depths, instead of too hastily concluding ground to be worthless without a sufficient trial.

, On. the Eureka very little quartz has been raised, as most of the shafts have struck intensely hard gramte, and the quartz at the same time is found diminishing to such an extent as to render some of the claims no longer payable. : '

On Allan's Reef, Yow.yow, Messrs. ::\-lurray and Sloan have obtained 5 ozs. 5 dwts. 4'80 grs. to the ton from 10 tons of quartz, taken from a depth of 100 feet from the surface,. being the result of only two men's labor for a month.

The Lancashire Hero Co., One·tree Hill, ·have a considerable quantity of stone of unusual rich. ness uncrushed. ' , ' .

The Victoria Reef, One.tree JIill, will very shortly be fully developed by the lessees of the Nelson Company', who I am informed will also work the Moonlight lease on tribute as soon as the necessary arrangements are concluded. -

Two new reefs, called by thelrospectors the Welcome and the Star, have been discovered during the q~arter; the former is situate on Panton Hill, near Queenstown, and has ,given from a trial cruslilllg 1 oz. 0 dwt. 4 gr. to the ton; the latter, near the Pioneer, Diamond Creek, from 20 tons, 1 oz. 8 dwts. 14'50 gr. Both results are considered payable.

. The average yield of'the district shows in a marked degree an improvement upon that of the prevIOUs quarter, and as this result has not arisen from any particular claim, but seems distributed generally over several reefs, I think it may reasonably be inferred that there is some probability of .its being the precursor to inereased activity in the mining enterprise of the locality. ,

Mining in the Kyneton subdivision is being carried on with but little spirit. There has been but two quartz claims at work this last quarter; eachis working in levels from 100 to,loO feet below the surface, and otaining a good thickness of stone, although generally speaking the reefs about Lauriston are not regularly defined reefs, and that they may yield good returns it is necessary that a large

, amount of eapital be invested. , A very enterprising company has just takim up the Frenchman's reef at Kangaroo Creek, which

will no doubt give eneouragement to the development of the numerous reefs in thl!-t locality. Alluvial mining here has almost eeased; there is but one claim registered in all the subdivision.

BLUE MOUNTAIN NORTH SUBDIVISION.

M.r. R. H. Horne, Mining Registrar.

Heavy rains, alternating with hail storms, cold and violent winds, and oecasional frost and snow, have continued almost incessantly during the last thirty days and nights. The deep shaft'of the "Oolumbian" (the only large alluvial claim, on this goldfield) has long been full of wllter, even to overflowing the surface. No erushings have taken place at either of the quartz~mining elaims during the last quarter. One sluieing claim has obtained 60 ozs.; and'a precarious livlllg has been obtallled by some of the small parties of miners; but a general depresssion has prevailed, only ameliorated ,by the increased occupation of lands for cultivation, the cqmparative prosperity of the/arms, and the

, sllccessfu,l eultivation of small gardens attached to the huts, or elaims, of many of the mmers.

There are no returns from the Crescent Company, Moyston, who have been engaged during the quarter in experiments to arrange apparatus to collect gold from quartz tailings.

I have the honor to report that, in the absence of any new ground of any importance having been discovered in this district, the alluvial mining is gradually becoming poorer in results, and the number of European miners pro-portionately decreased. Of the Chinese, tlie number of miners is not reduced, as far as can be ascertamed. .

Of the extended alluvial block claims I have to rel?0rt as follows:- . The Canton Company, after having suspended their works for several months, for want of funds,

have been compelled to abandon their claim. The greater pqrtion of it has been ta4en up by a new company, to be called the II Duke of Edinburgh," wlio are preparing to utilize and continue the work. ings commenced by the late proprieto it is believed that, under the new m!tnagement, with more 'capital at their command, success will reward their enterprise.

The Ararat Black Lead Company have proceeded energetically with the work necessary to open out the gutter of auriferous drift. The working shaft is sunk and timbered to a depth of 189 feet, which is below and about 100 feet from the IfUtter. The prospects obtained in the progress of the. work have been very satisfactory. An additIOnal steam.engine, for winding, has been recently pur· chased, which, with extensive puddling machines, are to be immediately erected.

The Cathcart Company nave failed to raise money to carryon their works, therefore the plant has been sold and the claim abandoned. .

The Cathcart Freehold Company have been working about six weeks of the quarter, and have obtained 88 ozs. 7 dwts. of gold from their claim; but the ground having been ~uch disturbed by old workings, together with.the large supply of water, have rendered the expenses so great, that it is feared the company will have to relinquish their undertaking. -

The A 1 Company, Ararat, is still idle for want of funds to carry out the necessary preliminary W~L "

The quartz reefs have progressed favorably during the quarter. The Extended North Star Company at Moyston (lease) have their shaft down 296 feet, and, from

a reef at that depth, have raised 965 tons of stone, yielding 8460zs. 19 dwts. 12 £frs. of gold. They have distributed during the quarter in Clividends £2,240, are preparing to'erect addltional battery power of ten heads of stamps, and have applied for a lease of SiX acres of additional ground, adjoining their present claim, on the same line of reef that they are working froJll. The company employ forty.three men.

The Extended Southern Cross Company have been actively working their claim, having raised 1,343 tons of stone, and have crushed 1,046 tons, yielding 823 ozs. 10 dwts. of gold. Their depth of shaft is 410 feet. At present they have only eight heads of stamps, but are erecting an additional steam· engine for the battery only, which will be increased to sixteen heads. The company have applied for a lease of their claim, and also for a lease of about two acres of additional ground abutting thereon.

The Kangaroo Company, Moyston, have raised and crushed 1,932 tons of stone from depths varying from 200 to 300 feet.

The quartz reef mining at Moor's Reef, Ararat, is yet too young to have allowed any of the companies to get their reefs into work. .

The Noah's Ark Company (lease) have constructed a large reservoir, now full of Ivater, and are erecting a 24.horsepower steam· engine and a' battery of eight stamps. Their new working shaft is down 86 feet and timbered 44 feet; more are contracted for. The pr08pects of this companyar,e believed to be very good. They employ thirteen men. .

The Ararat Quartz Mining Company have sunk a shaft. From small veins they have had a crushing of 2~ tons, which yielded 51 dwts. per ton; and have now struck a reef 7 feet in thickness, at a depth of 120 teet from the surface, and have raised about 70 tons of stone. This company have applied for a lease of twenty acres.

The Sailor Prince Company and the Prince of' Wales Company have not yet commenced operations.

I have the honor to report that the various reefs in this 'division continue to improve, Hoth: as t'o quality and quantity of stone, so that the permanence of the deep reefs is no longer' doubtful. 'l'he lower cross'reef now wod.ing in Messrs. Six claims, hitherto'suspended in eon. sequence 6f insufficient drainage, have been enabled to resume work on' this line of'r'Jef. .' ," .:'

• The Perthshire Reef has two (:laims 'working, the yield being from 10 dwts:to 12 dwts. to the ton, with a reef, thirty -three feet in thickness. Not more than tim feet of this;. however, is 'at present taken out, as, when the entire thickness is mined, the return falls to 4 dwts.

The mo.at important event of the quarter is the discovery of a new reef by Mr. James Henderson, at a I:lace about thrM.quarter,~ of a mile south-east of the Golden Po!nt Company's lease: ~he first crushmg of forty tons from tliIs' gave 4t ozs. per'ton, and the second kIln wenfl'S! ozs, ThIS discovery has 'given a great impetus to prospeeting, and a number of companies have been formed for the purpose; The following are the titles of the principal ones:- " . ' .. '"

1. Iron Duke Company, Waterloo Reef, 6. Star of Hope Company, East HampshIre Reef, 2. Blucher Company"',, 7. Owen Glendower qompany, WongaWonga, 3. Snowdon. Company, East Perthshire Re~f' ,8. Per~everance Company. " ", ,; .. 4. Castlemallle'Company,... 9. Rehance Company, VictOrIa Reef, .' 5. Northumberland Company,.. .' I 10;' Stirlingshire Company, Caledonia Reef.

, Of the outlyin~ reefs the only one making good returns is the Flying Doe, Elizabeth 'Creek: There is it great quantIty of water to be.contend.ed with at this place. " ".

The want of sufficient crushing machinery is beginning seriously to be felt, and large quantities,of stoue remain on the claims for weeks together.' Active steps, however, are' now beiu'g taken by.the" proprietors of several· of the milk to add to their'plant, so that shortly. not 'less than'sixty'additiobal stamp heads will be erected. ' , ,

: One or two dams were slightly injured by the recent floods, but have been promptly repaired: Work has been suspended on tue following reefs :-Rossshire, Durh!tm, Manners Sutton, Nowhere, Sir Charles Darling, London, and Telegraph.

ALLUVIAL.

Alluvial mining is in a comparatively prosp~rous condition, three of the ,lenses situated Oll the Welshman's Flat having got very payable ground,. in consequence of, which a small rush B~,t in.· 1 The' nature of the ground in the western end of this ·flat, however, is both expensiye and ·dangeroUs'to work. The reeent heavy rains have done considerable damage to the works· of several companies' in

, The Stawell Flat and Hand of Friendship Companies have yet met with no success, but they·are: still determined to persevere, and thoroughly test the ground lying between . the township of S,tawell and the Silver Shilling Diggings. . ,

The -Red,Star.Gompany, Welshman's Flat east, have struek payable gold in about sixteen feet sinking. .

The Northern Company are engaged prospeeting, but as yet are·unsuceessful. The Cymbrian Company have just commenced work. . The Reefs Company (Welshman's Flat) are raising very payable washdirt and cement. The Hit.or.Miss .Company, in the same locality, although they have got gold, have not yet

obtained anything payable. _ .' . The old _workings at Commercial-street are occupied chiefly by Chmese, and at the most western

point of these diggings the old Cumberland.Lead has been recovered, and now shows every appearance of a continuous run, .five claims having struck gold at considerable intervals. The lead 18 apparently both crooked and narrow. _.

There is very little. doing at the Great Western, and at· Shakespeare's Hill the lead is at present lost. . i _

.' The sluicing-claims on Church Hill and Twenty-f?ot, and :Forty-foot, Co~~ercial-street, after a long suspension of work, are once more .fully employed, and makmg very good dlVldends~

There have been four alluvial prospecting claims registered during the last month.

An effort is now bei~g made to form a (jompany to work the reef known as Power's Reef, for both gold and silver. The upper portion of this reef yielded It ounces of gold, and the last stone, taken from a depth of 70 feet, 5 d'!ts., the lode being two feet in thickness.

, The onII new ground opened dUring the quarter which is likely to be of importance is situated in the direction 0 the Frenchman's Diggings, where a prospecting eli\im has been taken up by Walters and party; but, as yet, the ground is barely payable. . 'rhree or four small payable patches have been discovered in the neighborhood of Landsborough, and one at the Malakoff; these, however, appear to be of very limited extent. - . '. ~

The lost lead at the Cambrian rush has not yet been struck, although a considerable amount of prospecting has be!)n'carried on in the neighborhood. • - '

At Glcnpatrick the old claims are doing well, but have been very much impeded with water. In the new ground the Glenpatrick Company have erected an engine, and will shortly be at full work, having most favorable prospects, .

The population of .this division continues nearly the ·same; The miners generally have permanent residences, although changing the locality 'of . their operations occasionally,-

An abundance of rain has fallen during the quarter, and there is no 'scarcity of water anywhere. Several sluicing clai~s have been taken up; these are supplied with water from the . Mount Cole races, and, I unders~nd, are giving fair returns. - . . ".

Several large blocks of ground have been taken up, 'under the bye.laws;rduring the quarter, -but most of ·them have not been worked, and have consequently lapsed; and in two, in which the time for commencing operations has not eJrpired, there has 'not, hitherto, been anything done. The very wet weather we have had, during the latter part of the quarter, has possibly had something to do with this.

Within the last two or three days a small rush has taken place about a mile north-east of Charlton. The prospectors bottomed with a fair prospect, but I have not been able to learn anything further yet. The sinking is from 39 to 40 feet. .

~e Old Main Lead is still principally occuyied by Chinese, who are apparently doing well. 'The old workings about Poverty Point, Jock's Lead, and Yam Holes are also principally occupied by Chinese, and, as the water is plentiful, they realize a fair amount of gold.

The Hope Company, in the Police Paddock, continue to get fair returns. In WingfieJd's Gully the Perseverance Company has :-vorked out the western end of the block, and, after making several bores with a good prospect, have commenced sinking a shaft further to the eastward.

Musical, Paddy's, and the adjoining gullies, continue to give profitable employment to a number of miners. The Burke Company in that locality have had very poor returns, on the average, during the quarter. The small lease in Shicer's Gully continues to yield very welL

, At Charlton'the Crinoline Company have had a pretty 'fair yield. The Prince of Wales and the Charlton Companies, from various reasons, have had very poor returns during the quarter. '

, In Sailor's Gully the Holmesdale Company has, as usual, been getting very good returns, and the same is the case with the Defiance Company. The Royal Saxon Company has only had very moderate returns during the quarter. The Great Victqria Company's ground has been let on tribute, and the yield of gold appears to have increased since. The other smaller claims in this locality are doing very well. '

Mr. W. Phipps, Mining Registrar.

The Swift's Creek Quartz Crushing Company's mill is at last completed. The Eureka and Eldorado leaseholders are sending down 50 tons of stone each, the Midas and All Nations claims 25 tons each, for a trial crushing. As this will be the first crushings from the Swift's Creek Reefs, I will forward a separate report as soon as it is completed, I continue, to receive very good accounts from the reefs on the Upper Bendoc and Bouang Rivers, at the extreme eastern limit of my district, and adjoining the New South Wales boundary. From stone crushed in the rudest manner satisfactory results are being obtained. I cl\nnot as yet obtain the exact returns, but Mr. Howitt is now visiting the district, and will, I have no doubt, furnish the Department with full particulars. The population on Wombat Creek, Upper Mitta Mitta, or Big River, continues inereasing, and I have registered twenty-six: claims there this quarter., Most ofthe claims are turning out well, and some decidedly rich. . I have the honor to report that, during the quarter, a very great improvement has taken place in this subdivision, both in quartz and alluvial mining, particularly the latter. '

The quartz claims at Store Creek and Deptford would be, in my opinion, in a much more flourishing condition if the hold era caused some foreign capital to be introduced, so as to enable them to carryon mining operations in a more systematie manner. With the exception of work having been resumed at the Britannia and Eldorado mine, I have little change to report as regards mining operations in this subdivision for the present (Juarter.

. Owing to the severity of the weather during the winter months very little .work has· been done on several reefs, particularly upon those situated at the Upper Dargo. The Evening Star Company, for instance, have not been able to work more than six weeks out of twelve.

A new mill of 4 stampers has been placed on the ground, at the Black Snake, by the Kong Yeng Amalgamated Company, and would ere this have commenced crushing, but that the claim is in dispute, and work has been suspended p'ending the decision of the Court of Mines.

The Good Hope Company have not yet got their winze through to the lower level, consequently very little stone has been taken out. The mill, however, has been engaged a portion of the time crushing for the reefs at work in its immediate neighborhood. ,

I mentioned in my last report that a new reef called the Grimross had been discovered near the Good Hope; between 80 and 90 tons have been crushed, yielding nearly 2 ozs. to the ton. The reef is a tolerabll wide one and very easily worked, owing to its proximity to the Good Hope mill; the expense 0 working is comparatively trifling, so that a much smaller J'ield would still be remunerative.

About 20 men have been at work during the quarter on the Hibernia Reef, the average yield from the stone crushed is small, but the company appear very sanguine that it will eventually pay tJtem well for working.

There has been nothing doing in alluvial mining worthy of mention, as nearly all the creek' claims are held under suspension on account of the floods.

The South Gippsland Quartz Mining Company (Prospecting claim, and Nos. 1 and 2 North) have determined to work their ground, which has been so long neglected. They are sinking a main shaft, from which they will drive a level along the whole length of the claim at a depth of 30 feet below water level. Claim No.3 is suspended. Nos. 4 and 5 are being worked on tribute. No.6 (North Gippsland'Gold Mining C()mpany)-the legal management of this eompany has been removed to Melbourne. The mining manager has only six men at work sinking a winze on the southern portion of the reef. Nos. 7 and 8, Walhalla and WeHesley Companies, maintain their reputation as steady dividend paying claims. Nos. 9 and 10, The Long 'runnel Company, have discovered the reef at 30 feet below water level. The machinery for pumping and driving a battery has been ordered. The appearance of the stone discovered fully bears out the statement in my last report. , '

No. 14, North Hercules Company, have got their tunnel in 198 feet, and expect to have to go 100 feet farther before reaching the reef. No other claiIl1l3 on Cohen's reef are being worked. ,

On the Longfellow's reef the claims are improving. The prospecting claim is well opened, and the milnager produces an ingot of about 240 ozs. of gold weekly. ,

No.2 S. W., The Hope Company, have 50 tons of stone ready for the mill. Shamrock Reef, the prospecting company's reef improves as it extends into the hill. The Scotia, Perseverance, Try.again, Wealth of Nations, and other claims on this line are all at

work. The Scrat.a-bit Company are now driving their battery by a water wheel, but intend adding steam

power immediately. The Girls',Reef Company are driving along the lode by contract.
