Connect-Grow-Live

We praise God for leading us to a new mission statement at King of Glory:

Connect to God and His people

Grow in faith and love

Live through service and sharing.

These are not merely words to look nice on a page. Rather they are the identity of the mission and ministry of this church. When people want to discover who King of Glory is they can look at these words and see who we are, why we are and where we plan to go. At the same time, we wanted this mission statement to be about moving forward. The Christan life is a journey where the individual is continually shaped and molded into a follower of our Savior and Lord. The words of this mission serve as a flow of movement for our journey in this place. Our prayer is that everyone who connects at King of Glory grows. This growth then leads to living in a way that fosters serving and the sharing of God’s love with all.

We offer all that is here so that you can be part of this community and grow in the love of the Lord. Whether a member, a friend, or a visitor every program and ministry is offered with the prayer that you connect, grow and live in the name of Jesus our King of Glory. Please read through this guide, mark your calenders and plan to be part of all that we offer.

We look forward to seeing you!

May the Lord bless you always.

Serving with Joy, Pastor Bill Harmon

Randy Musfelt, Facility Manager, 757-258-9701 or [email protected]

Property Management at King of Glory is a way to give back to our church home. It is a way to put your skills of being a handy-man (or woman) to use. Being a property manager at King of Glory is our way of showing the blessings God has provided us with the gift of working with our hands and providing labor to such events as the Spring and Fall Work Days.

Currently the property management board is seeking two (2) volunteers to sit on the board with our current volunteer staff that includes Phil Herbst, Dean Whitehead, Bryan Cothran, Charlie Ericsson and Rusty Hunnicutt. You don’t have to know a trade like electrical, plumbing or the like, just have the willingness to meet once a month to discuss the small odds and ends that keep our church beautiful.

The property management board would like to welcome our new facility manager, Randy Musfelt, to our staff at King of Glory and look forward to working with Randy as he leads the day-to-day maintenance, set-up and operational needs it takes to keep King of Glory in top shape.

To discuss the open property management board seats, please contact Matt Pike at [email protected] or call him at home at 757-220-8232.

CHURCH LEADERSHIP

Page 5: Ministry Guide - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/kingofglorylutheranchurch/... · 2012-02-08 · These are not merely words to look nice on a page. Rather they are the identity

Congregational Theme Throughout this year King of Glory’s ministry theme will be:

The Board of StewardshipThe Stewardship Committee is entrusted with the responsibility to enlist the time, talent and treasure of the congregation to support God’s mission at King of Glory. We sponsor two events each year to highlight opportunities for you to serve.

The first event is the Ministry Fair in the spring where all the ministries and boards of the congregation gather in the fel-lowship hall and are available to discuss service opportunities. Time and talent sheets are distributed for each member to indicate areas where they would most enjoy serving the Lord. Time and talent sheets are then made available to the church leadership to reach out to individuals interested in serving in specific areas or specific ways.

The second event is Consecration Sunday in the fall where each family in the congregation is asked to fill out an Estimate of Giving Card. The cards are collected in confidence and tallied by the Church Financial Secretary for the purposes of budgeting for the financial needs of the congregation. These funds are used to pay our staff, our mortgage, maintain our worship environment and proclaim the saving grace of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior both within our church body and to out to our community.

Stewardship is the mechanism that provides the ability to plan for the resources to support our church mission: Connecting to God and His people, Growing in faith and love, and Living through service and sharing.

Congregational Clusters: Constitution and By-LawsAt our May Voter’s Meeting the congregation will be presented with a new constitution and by-laws. This new system of governance is designed to streamline ministry so that there is less bureaucracy and more opportunity for ministry. Come to the clusters where the first half hour will be a presentation on the new concepts and the remaining hour will be devoted to your questions.

WORSHIP

A brief overview of our worship styles:

Each day we are given the privilege of living a life of worship. Our words, our actions, the decisions we make all are a reflection of God working in us and our lives responding to His love. To support you in your daily Christian walk, we gather each Sunday to wor-ship together, be built up in faith and offer praise and adoration to our Savior and King.

We rejoice that we are a congregation which strives to have mul-tiple points of entry. From the first day that the charter members met to this very day we have been a people who want to expand our reach through worship. Over the last 20 years we have chal-lenged ourselves to constantly be reviewing the style, language, and approach of all of our ministries including worship so that the most people are enriched in their faith and hear the love of Jesus.

We are honored to offer you these opportunities to gather and connect to our Savior Jesus Christ. Each service, regardless of style, is grounded in the truth of God’s Word revealed in Holy Scripture (the Bible). Each service we take time to celebrate the sacramental gifts that God has given us. That is we rejoice in the power of Bap-tism and partake in the Holy Meal of Communion. Worship is a time to receive the gifts of God and at the same time offer our hearts and prayers to Him.

Join the growing team of dedicated & caring volunteers who help

shepherd the young people of our congregation!

Hands down, faith is most imparted in the home. We are thankful we get to see kids and teens for an hour or two per week. However we know that most of the faith “catching” is done outside of the church walls. We realize that here at King of Glory, the youth and children’s ministries are a part of a child’s development. Within that “part” that we get with kids, we want to offer the opportunity to Connect-Grow-Live in meaningful ways that bring kids closer to Jesus and one another.

Every spring, we offer volunteers the opportunity to recommit for another year of ministry. We are looking for a variety of new team members to join us in the wild and crazy world of youth ministry. Join us and enjoy the journey!

The Board of Evangelism, Missions & Outreach (EMO) is a great place to connect and grow and live out your faith. We have great times together sharing in faith and helping others. We want to serve those in our own con-gregation, those in our own community and those in distant lands.

Consider our various welcoming ministries to connect with the family of KOG.

Come and grow by joining one or more of our EMO Teams where we set challenging goals, establish opportunities for participation, manage projects, and lead by example. EMO folks are living through service and sharing and you can do the same.

Volunteers are needed in many areas. We desire to show the love of Christ to all who are in need. Take a look at the list of ministries and get in touch. You will be a blessing and you will be blessed. May the services we offer bring praises to the Name of Jesus Christ!

Boy Scouts of America. The Troop meets weekly at the

Funeral Meal Ministry

Robin Zophy: [email protected] 259-9099

At KOG, we provide a “Celebration of Life” meal after all

funerals when requested by the family. Volunteers pre-

pare/purchase either finger sandwiches, salads or des-

serts for the meals, and drop them off at church for the

meal. Or they volunteer to help set up, clean up and/or

serve food at the meal. When you get an email blast from

Pastor that we are doing a funeral or memorial service

at church, email Robin Zophy to check on what kind of

help is needed. Help when you are able, not necessarily

for every funeral! Everyone is welcome to help with this

ministry! Families always express how much they appre-

ciate this ministry.

KOG MOPS offers support, Christian fellowship, and education to women with children ages birth through Kindergarten as

well as expecting mothers. The goal of the KOG MOPS ministry is to make sure that every mother of preschoolers knows

that MOPS exists, and that no mom is alone in the journey of motherhood. MOPS is open to those not only at KOG, but also

the Williamsburg community.

MOPS currently has two groups that meet twice per month, one on Monday Evenings (5-7pm) and the other on Tuesday

Mornings (9:30-11:30am). Childcare is provided for all meetings. Meetings consist of brunch/dinner, speakers, discussion

groups, mentor mom talks, creative activities, time for sharing, and prayer.

This year we are making an intentional effort to bond as mothers and families outside of the meetings themselves. There are

many opportunities to gather together, whether it be a simple mom and child play-date, a mom’s night out, mom’s and pop’s

bowling night or our annual family picnic. There is something for everyone and every schedule.

Beyond the bi-weekly meetings, MOPS also supports organizations like the Kelly Weinberg Foundation. Moms have the

opportunity to participate in community service projects from donations of baked cookies to greeting participants at their

local cancer support group. There are also opportunities to support new mothers and those going through family struggles

with supportive visits or delivered meals. [email protected]

No one is immune to loss and the resulting dynamics of grief, but with God’s help and guidance we strive to be available to assist the grieving families of King of Glory.

Our ministry is to be in contact with the grieving family and to provide some meals as needed during the initial time after the death of a family member. During the course of a year we visit or make contact with the grieving family member. We provide comforting faith based books and scripture readings to help and support them in their time of grief. We also strive to provide them with information on the Christian Support groups in the area. We will have a Grief support group at King of Glory in the near future.

The goal of this Ministry is to care for our King of Glory families when they are hurting in the loss of an immediate family member. Coordinators: Carol Doebler 221-0749 Sue Quick 565-7295

Military Care

We praise God for the men and women who serve our country

and we pray God’s blessing upon them. We also give thanks to God

and pray for the families who give and sacrifice as well. In an effort

to extend care and assistance, King of Glory has instituted

an ‘Adopt-a-Family” ministry where retired military personnel and

families “adopt” current military families and personnel. If you

would like to be connected to a family or individual, please contact

Jenny Olsen at 645-2421. Events will be planned throughout the

year for military families and spouses. Please be sure to check the

Herald and News and Notes.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The Prayer Shawl Ministry as formed to provide Prayer Shawls

for those in need or celebrating. Prayer Bears for children are now

available, and soon Prayer Cloths for those in the Service will be

added. Do not think that knowing how to knit or crochet is a requisite.

Experts are ready to teach you. All skill levels are welcome. Meet-

ings are the second Saturday of the month at 9am at church, from

September through May excluding December.

Parish Nurse Lana Wingate: [email protected]

Lana B. Wingate, RN, MSN, BC, PN, 259-5949

The Parish Nurse provides health promotions within the church com-

munity. Care is given in a nursing and spiritual manner to assist the

person in a wholistic way. The nurse does not provide hands on care

but manages the needs of the individual on a personal level. Visits

are made to the sick in the home, hospital, nursing homes and in

assisted living facilities. The Parish Nurse is available for individual

health counseling, blood pressures or as a nursing resource.

The Parish Nurse’s office is now located in my home and if anyone

needs any resource or wants to meet with me, please call me at

259-5949 and I will be glad to furnish you with any information that

you need or to visit with you. I can still do blood pressures at the

church. Look in the information center for current health magazines

and check out the Care Note Display by the front door for helpful

notes for various problems.

STEPHEN MINISTRY SUNDAY AT KING OF GLORY - Feb 12

King of Glory has set aside February 12 as a special Sunday to celebrate Stephen Ministry in our congregation. It will be a day of celebration and recognition of this wonderful ministry of care in the life of members and non members.

Are you a previously trained Stephen Minister? ….and if you are interested in becoming active again, please contact John Falck. There is a plan for you!

Stephen Ministers meet the First and Third Thursdays of each month for continuing education and small group super-vision. Both active and inactive Ministers are welcome to attend for the first hour of our twice monthly meetings to receive continuing education on a variety of topics related to Christian caregiving. Questions? Call/email Dan!

Active Stephen Ministers then break into a small group format for the second hour to provide supervision and guidance to Stephen Ministers with their caring relationships. Questions? Call/email Sharon!

Stephen Ministry is a caring lay ministry of King of Glory. Over twenty Stephen Ministers are available to provide confidential one-to-one Christian caregiving to members in our KOG congregation and Williamsburg community. Stephen Ministers are the “after” people – stepping in after a major change has occurred in a person’s life. Stephen Ministers are trained lay ministers, able to provide consistent support on a weekly basis for as long as care is needed. If you or someone you know could benefit from having a Stephen Minister, please contact Stephen Leader Coordinator Sharon McLean or the church office for confidential care and further information.
