MINNEAPOLIS HAS A HEALTHY ARRAY OF UNIQUE

NEIGHBORHOODS TO CATER TO A DIVERSE

POPULATION WITHIN THE CITY.

MINNEAPOLIS HAS ALWAYS HAD PROGRESSIVE ARTS

AND CULTURE, YET ITS MIDWEST CHARACTER HAS

NOT DEMANDED NATIONAL ATTENTION, KEEPING THIS

CULTURE A SECRET.

MINNEAPOLIS

BOOMING SUBURBAN GROWTH STRADDLES THE

LINE BETWEEN URBAN AND RURAL APPEAL, WHILE

DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE CITY CONTINUES TO

BOLSTER AN ALREADY IMPRESSIVE CITY CULTURE.

Page 3: Minneapolis: Population, Demographics, Arts and Culture

HISTORICALLY EDUCATION HAS BEEN A HIGH

MINNESOTA PRIORITY, AND THIS TRADITION CONTINUES.

STATE AVERAGE ACT SCORE IS HIGHEST IN THE NATION.

THE TWIN CITIES IDENTITY IS CLOSELY TIED TO THE

MINNESOTA LANDSCAPE. PARKS AND LAKES PERMEATE

THE URBAN FABRIC ACCOMMODATING THE MILD

SUMMER. SKYWALKS AND TUNNELS PROVIDE RECLUSE

FROM THE BITTERLY COLD WINTERS.

Page 4: Minneapolis: Population, Demographics, Arts and Culture

FIRST AVENUE and Seventh Street Entry has contributed to the great

success of Minneapolis’ progressive music scene. Located downtown, it has

been a launching pad for almost any act that has come out of Minneapolis,

including The Replacements, Prince, Husker Du and Atmosphere.

THE MINNEAPOLIS SOUND can be in large part attributed to the

music of Minneapolis native, Prince. It includes a compressed,

synthesizer based music, that is faster and less bass heavy than

traditional Funk Rock.

PUNK ROCK began in Minneapolis with heart-on-the-sleeve style of

The Replacements. The bands drug and alcohol fueled lifestyles, sloppy

guitar rock, and raspy vocals set a new precedent for alternative rock

across the country.

HARDCORE is still a large part of the Twin Cities culture. This began

with Husker Du, who were the first band signed to a major record label.

This cemented hardcore as a legitimate genre, and the overly melodic

style can still be heard today in the continuing underground do-it-

yourself punk scene.

HIP HOP is on the rise, gaining national attention through bands like

Atmosphere. Atmosphere’s lyrics are very much tied to Minneapolis,

and describe the band’s blue-collar lifestyle within the city.

LITERATURE AND SPOKEN WORD have made Minneapolis the third-

largest theater market in the US and Minneapolis is the third most literate

city in the country. The multitude of stages and theater companies in

combination with the amount of money supplied by the city has created a

vibrant literary culture in Minneapolis.

OPEN BOOK is the nations largest independent literary center, and supports

many of the literary artists in Minneapolis. Not only does the center teach

and assist writers, but also teaches book binding and printing.

THE GUTHRIE THEATER, along with three historic theaters recently

purchased by the city, provide worthy stages for the local theater

companies, as well as Broadway and Off-Broadway shows.

VISUAL ARTS in Minneapolis have experienced a boom concurrent

with the literature community. Both the Walker Arts Museum and the

Minneapolis Institute for Arts grew in size within the last few years.

THE WAREHOUSE DISTRICT played an important role in the development

of the current arts scene in the 1980’s. This Chicago style commercial

district has since been gentrified, pushing much of the current arts class to

the Lowertown neighborhood in St Paul.

POPULATIONCHANGE

WHITE POPULATION GROWTH is occurring primarily in the suburbs, such as Shakopee

and Chaska. The exception to this is along the waterfront, where old structures are being

renovated and converted from warehouses into condominiums.

GROWTH OF NON-WHITE POPULATION

is happening mostly in the locations where

white-population are moving out. There are

closer to the city center.

In terms of POPULATION DENSITY,

population within city limits has remained

static, except for downtown.

HISTORICAL GROWTH OF THE TWIN

CITIES shows that Minneapolis arose as the

dominant center of the two between 1949

and 1969. St Paul has remained dense, yet

not expanded outward nearly as much as

Minneapolis.

WAREHOUSE DISTRICT

Formerly home to large railroad

yard, warehouses and factories;

now a hip gentrified area.

Prominent nightlife, past artist

residents.

MINNEAPOLIS’ INTERNAL STRUCTURE IS ALWAYS

CHANGING. Many of the structures along the river have

shifted from industrial to commercial, residential and even

educational.

NORTH MINNEAPOLIS is comprised of the Near North

and Camden communities. They are working-class

neighborhoods which have traditionally served the industries

along the river.

THE UNIVERSITY DISTRICT, THE DOWNTOWN DISTRICT

and UPTOWN are some of the more well-known cultural

icons within Minneapolis. These are where money, white-

collar jobs/workers and cultural and educational institutions

dominate.

SOUTHERN COMMUNITIES have higher amounts of racial

and cultural diversity. Phillips and Longfellow contain high

numbers of immigrants.

MAY FEST

Local celebration. Big deal in

Minneapolis. People get dressed

up and get weird in the streets.

MILWAUKEE HISTORIC

Originally lower cost housing for

immigrants; fell into disrepair.

City later renovated and created

historic landmarks.

LAKE HIAWATHA

Connected by the chain of

lakes by the Minnehaha creek.

DINKY TOWN

North side of the University of

Minnesota. Many students of the

U live in this area and partake

in it’s festive nightlife and get

High end multifamily residential

area. Known for it’s Victorian

era houses on the north side of

the island (fancy shamncy).

The SOUTHWEST SUBURBS meld city atmosphere with

high-class suburban texture. There are many activities

that function as a retreat from the inner city, such as the

Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Canterbury Racetrack and

Valley Fair.

The NORTHWEST SUBURBS vary in size, but all function as

bedroom communities. They are perceived as rural, yet retain

easy access to the city. Like the Southwest Suburbs, it is

growing as a independent commercial center.

The Twin Cities have an outstanding reputation for their high-

quality public education system, PLACING NEAR OR AT

Minneapolis was appointed the most literate city based on

The Hiawatha LRT is geared solely towards tourists and commuters.

Some of the major connections on the transit line include the

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, the Mall of America, the

Metrodome, and Target Field. THE LIGHT RAIL IS NOT DESIGNED

TO ACCOMMODATE NIGHTLIFE; it stops running from one to four

in the morning.

The proposed Southwest LRT cuts through Eden Prairie, Minnetonka,

Edina, Hopkins, St Louis Park, Calhoun-Isle and downtown

Minneapolis. Unlike the Hiawatha line, the Southwest line will

cut through higher income neighborhoods and will stem new

development, as opposed to the Hiawatha line, which connects

existing large icons of commerce, such as downtown and the airport.

As a result, these LRT systems will function differently.
