Minnehaha Academy repeats in Class AA; Eden Prairiewins third title; Waconia, Parkers Prairie capture firstchampionshipsFour baseball teams were crowned cham-

pions during the 2017 MSHSL PrepChampionship Series. Minnehaha Academyof Minneapolis was a repeat champion inClass AA, while Eden Prairie won its thirdchampionship in Class AAAA. Parkers Prairieimproved on last year’s runner-up showing tocapture its first title in Class AA, and Waconiawon its first championship in Class AA.

Class ASenior pitcher Levi Arnold threw a com-

plete-game six-hitter as Parkers Prairie wonits first baseball championship with a 6-3 vic-tory over Legacy Christian Academy ofAndover.

The Panthers (26-2) built a 6-0 lead after4 1/2 innings and held on for the win.Sophomore first baseman Travis Yohnke, sen-ior shortstop Casey Peterson, and juniorthird baseman Matt Ferley led a nine-hitattack with two hits each. Arnold needed just92 pitches to complete the victory. He walkedtwo and struck out two.

Yohnke opened the scoring on a bases-loaded walk to senior infielder HunterMcDaniel in the second inning. Yohnke thendrove in another run with a triple in the thirdto make it 2-0. The Panthers added threemore runs in the fourth inning and a solorun in the fifth.

Arnold escaped trouble in the fourthinning when he induced a double-play to getout of the jam. In the fifth, senior infielderEthan Mocchi’s double was the key hit asLegacy Christian Academy trimmed the deficitto 6-3. Arnold, however, settled in and retiredthe last seven batters to secure the win.

Junior infielder Jarvey Hill had two hitsfor Legacy Christian Academy (21-5).

This was the first title for Parkers’ Prairie.In 2016, the Panthers lost the Class A titlegame, 4-2, to Springfield in 11 innings. Thiswas also the second overall appearance forParker’s Prairie.

In the third-place game, Red RockCentral/Westbrook-Walnut Grove reboundedfrom a semifinal loss to Parkers Prairie torecord a 12-0 victory over Wabasha-Kelloggin five innings.

The Falcons (24-4) wasted little time inbuilding their lead with six runs in the first,followed by three more in the third inningand their final three in the fifth. Senior rightfielder Taylor Bunting was 3 for 4, and soph-omore left fielder Austin Irlbeck, senior thirdbaseman Cole Pankonin, and senior short-

stop Mitchell Willhite had two RBI each tolead the offensive surge. Senior pitcher SkylerReddemann worked five innings and surren-dered just two hits for Wabasha-Kellogg (17-10).

In the consolation final, Fosston juniorpitcher Brett Sundquist threw a perfect gamein not allowing a runner to reach base in asix-inning, 10-0 victory over MartinLuther/GHEC-Truman. He finished withthree strikeouts.

Top-seeded Parkers Prairie earned a berthin the championship game following an 8-3victory over Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove in the semifinals. Senior pitch-er Andrew Johnson was a dominant force onthe mound and at the plate. Offensively, hewas 3 for 4 with two runs scored and fourruns batted in. His two-run home run in thebottom of the sixth inning was a 370-footshot to left center.

Legacy Christian Academy, which won theconsolation final in 2016, completed thechampionship billing with a 7-5 semifinal

victory over unseeded Wabasha-Kellogg. Inthe decisive seventh inning, senior centerfielder Josh Peterson snapped a 5-5 deadlockwith an RBI double. Two batters later, hescored on a wild pitch to give the Lions a two-run advantage. In the bottom of the seventh,Legacy Christian Academy senior NilsAnderson made the defensive play of thegame when he fielded a grounder and alertlythrew to third to get a Wabasha-Kellogg leadrunner caught in a rundown.

Peterson and Anderson were both 4 for 5with an RBI each. Peterson also scored threetimes.

Class AASophomore shortstop Noah Dehne sin-

gled home the winning run and added aninsurance run to push Minnehaha Academypast Pierz, 6-4, in the Class AA championshipgame. It was the second championship forthe Redhawks in four tournament appear-ances.

The Pioneers made it interesting, gettingrunners to second and third with one out inthe bottom of the seventh inning. BennettTheisen, a sophomore righthander, retiredthe last two batters to earn the win in relief.Theisen threw three innings, allowing noruns on three hits with seven strikeouts.

The Redhawks started strong, scoringtwice in the second and third innings for a 4-0 lead. Pierz (26-3) fought back with a runin the third on four singles. One inning later,Luke Girtz, a sophomore left fielder, drilled atwo-run single to cap a three-run outburstthat tied the game at four.

In the third-place game, Maple Lakescored a run in the bottom of the seventhinning to record a 7-6 victory over MarshallSchool of Duluth. Junior infielder GrantMergen had three hits and scored two runswhile senior infielder Hunter Malachekadded two hits and three RBI for the Irish(24-3). Marshall School (19-7) got two hitsand two runs from sophomore infielder PeteHansen.

In the consolation final, RochesterLourdes (22-7) raced to an 11-5 victory overNew London-Spicer (20-6). Sophomore out-fielder Pat Leary had two hits, scored a run,and had one RBI for the Eagles.

Minnehaha Academy advanced to theClass AA championship game with an 8-3victory over Maple Lake. Senior pitcher AlexEvenson had 11 strikeouts for the Redhawks,and Minnehaha Academy scored four runs inthe top of the seventh inning. Senior second

baseman Kenny Kiratli had two hits and twoRBI for the Redhawks. Maple Lake’s HunterMalachek had a home run and two hits.

Pierz completed the Class AA champi-onship pairing with a 1-0 victory overMarshall School in the other semifinal.Sophomore catcher Reese Kapsner scored thegame’s only run on an RBI from senior pitch-er Matthew Tautges.

Class AAAWaconia became just the ninth baseball

team in League history to finish a seasonundefeated following its 6-1 victory overHibbing in the Class AAA title game. TheWildcats are the first Minnesota baseball pro-gram to complete a perfect season since St.Cloud Cathedral in Class AA in 2015.

Dillon Whittaker, a senior right-hander,scattered five hits as Waconia capped a 26-0season. Whittaker used just 96 pitches, walk-ing none and striking out six.

Robbie Smith, a junior second baseman,had three hits - two singles and a double - topace Waconia’s 10-hit attack. Senior firstbaseman Austin Friedrich added a pair of hitsand had two RBI. Alex Logelin, a seniorcatcher, also had two hits and scored twice.

The Wildcats put pressure on Hibbing(19-9) from the start, scoring twice in the firstinning and adding single runs in the secondand third. Held hitless for three innings, theBluejackets broke through in the fourth witha pair of hits, scoring a run on a sacrifice flyby senior left fielder Dylan Mattson. But thatwas all Hibbing, which advanced to the finalby eliminating No. 2 St. Cloud Tech and No. 3 Alexandria Area, could muster. AustinGlad, a senior first baseman, was 2-for-3 forthe Bluejackets.

Waconia added single runs in the fifth andsixth innings to pull away to win its first state baseball championship in its third

appearance. It was Hibbing’s first appearancein a state baseball final since 1989.

In the third-place game, Marshall scoredtwo runs in the seventh inning to record a 10-9 victory over Alexandria Area. Senior pitch-er/infielder Logan Tomasek was 3 for 5 withfour RBI, including two in the decisive sev-enth inning. The Tigers (20-7) scored sevenunearned runs in the second inning. Seniorinfielder Jake Drew was 3 for 5 with two runsscored and five RBI for Alexandria Area (20-7).

In the consolation final, St. ThomasAcademy (16-10) utilized 21 players in its 9-1victory over Mahtomedi (15-12). Sophomorepitcher Duke Coborn allowed just anunearned run and senior first basemanTommy Dolan had a two-run double in thefifth. It was St. Thomas Academy’s second vic-tory over Mahtomedi this season. The teamssplit two Metro East Conference games dur-ing the regular season.

Waconia earned a spot in the Class AAAchampionship game with a 7-6 victory overMarshall in the first semifinal. Junior catcherRobert Smith delivered the key hit thatsnapped a tie in the bottom of the seventh togive Waconia the narrow win. Marshallscored three runs with two outs in the top ofthe seventh to gain a 6-4 lead. Senior thirdbaseman Jacob Hendricks was 3 for 4 withtwo RBI for the Wildcats.

Hibbing completed the championshippairing with an 8-7 victory over AlexandriaArea in the second semifinal. Sophomoreinfielder Will Durie had an RBI single thatscored senior outfielder Dylan Matson for thewinning run. Senior outfielder AnthonyKanipes was 3 for 4 with two RBI and a runscored for the Bluejackets. Senior infielderJake Dew had two hits for Alexandria Area.

Class AAAASenior pitcher Jack Zigan tossed a com-

plete-game three-hitter to spur Eden Prairieto an impressive season-ending 5-1 victoryover Forest Lake in the Class AAAA champi-onship game. In the three-game state tourna-ment, the unseeded Eagles outscored theiropponents by a 25-2 margin and went on towin their third championship. Eden Prairiewon previously in 2004 and 2010.

Forest Lake senior pitcher Cam Kline wasalso impressive on the mound in a losingeffort. He struck out six batters in a row atone point and finished with 12 strikeouts insix innings of work. He also had two of theRangers’ three hits and scored Forest Lake’slone run.

Trailing 1-0, the Eagles (18-9) turned thegame around by sending eight batters to theplate in the fourth inning and scoring fourruns. Junior catcher Ryan Wrobleski and sen-ior first baseman Matthew Dolan had RBIhits in the inning. Two innings later, seniorright fielder Connor Young singled andscored when senior left fielder Bailey DeMetstripled to right center.

Zigan took care of the rest. The right-han-der allowed only an unearned run with twowalks and 11 strikeouts - including the lastseven Forest Lake outs. Only one Ranger run-ner advanced as far as second base after thefirst inning.

The victory capped an Eagles’ run that sawthem eliminate No. 1 seed Wayzata in thequarterfinals, No. 4 seed Lakeville North inthe semifinals, and No. 3 Forest Lake in thetitle game.

Forest Lake (20-7) was appearing in abaseball championship game for the firsttime since 1993.

In the third-place game, juniorpitcher/outfielder Nick Spitt singled homethe winning run in the bottom of the seventhinning to lift Lakeville North to a 4-3 victoryover Woodbury. It completed a rally thatfound the Panthers (21-6) in an early 3-0hole. Woodbury (17-10) built the early lead,in part, on a two-run homer by senior firstbaseman Ronald Sweeney.

In the consolation final, Wayzata (19-7)raced to an 11-3 victory over Maple Grove(18-10). Wayzata, the top seed to open thetournament, scored five runs in the fourthinning to set the tone for the victory. Seniorcatcher Tyler Young was 3 for 3 with two dou-bles for the Trojans.

Eden Prairie advanced to the champi-onship game for the first time since 2014with a 14-0 victory in five innings overLakeville North in the semifinals. Senior sec-ond baseman Connor Kehl had a two-runhomer to left field in the third inning to helpfuel the Eagles. An inning later, he had a two-run double.

In the lower-bracket semifinal, juniorinfielder Zack Raabe had a bases-loadedtriple to highlight a six-run sixth inning thatled Forest Lake to a 9-1 victory overWoodbury. It was the Rangers’ second victoryover Woodbury in three meetings during theregular season.

All four championship games were playedfor the eighth consecutive year at Target Field.Paid attendance for the Prep ChampionshipSeries was 7,947. Total paid tournamentattendance was 20,564.

Class A quarterfinal, semifinal, and third-place games were played at the Mini Met inJordan, with Chaska Athletic Park hosting theconsolation round. Class AA quarterfinal,semifinal, and third-place rounds wereplayed at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud andadjoining Joe Faber Field hosted the consola-tion round. Class AAA quarterfinal, semifi-nal, and third-place games were played atDick Siebert Field in Minneapolis andUniversity of Northwestern in St. Paul hostedthe consolation round. CHS Field in St. Paulhosted the quarterfinal, semifinal, and third-place games for Class AAAA. Consolationrounds were held at Toni Stone Field at theDunning Sports Complex in St. Paul
