SCOUTING MINNESOTAMinnesota has played five consecutive games that were in doubt in the fourth quarter to open the 2009 campaign. The Gophers defeated Syracuse 23-20 in overtime, came from behind to defeat Air Force 20-13 and pulled away from Northwestern late in a 35-24 win. Minnesota was tied 21-21 with California midway through the fourth quarter and fell by just three to Wisconsin.

Quarterback Adam Weber returns after taking nearly every snap for the past two-plus seasons. He set the Minnesota single-season records for passing yardage (2,895), TDs passing (24), completions (258) and attempts (449) in 2007. Earlier this season, he became the Gophers’ career completions leader and currently has a total of 604. Wide receiver Eric Decker set a Minnesota record for career receptions vs. Cal and currently has 212. Last week vs. Wisconsin, Decker became the Gophers’ career receiving yard-age leader with a total of 3,000 yards. He was a Biletnikoff Award finalist and All-Big Ten in 2008.

Defensively, Minnesota is allowing 24.6 points per game. The Gophers rank No. 64 in the nation in scor-ing defense. The Gopher linebacking corps has had at least one double-digit tackler in each game this season. Nate Triplett, Lee Campbell and Simoni Lawrence are the starters at LB. Up front, Eric Small (14 tackles, 3 TFL, 3 sacks, FF) leads the way. The secondary returns three starters -- CBs Marcus Sherels and Traye Simmons and safety Kyle Theret.

SCOUTING PURDUEPurdue comes into this week’s game with a 1-4 overall record and an 0-1 mark in the Big Ten. But the Boiler-makers have been close to big victories this season. Purdue fell to nationally-ranked Oregon 38-36 on the road and lost by just three, 24-21 to Notre Dame.

Purdue is coached by Danny Hope, who is in his first season as the head coach in W. Lafayette. He is in his sixth overall season on the Purdue staff. Hope was an assistant coach at Purdue under Joe Tiller from 1997-2001.

Offensively, Purdue is one of the more prolific teams in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers are No. 34 in the nation in total offense, No. 30 in passing and No. 56 in rushing. They are averaging 30.2 points per game, ranking No. 41. On the flip side, Purdue is 94th in total defense and 92nd in scoring defense, allowing 399.4 yards and 29.6 points per game.

GOLDEN GOPHER HEAD COACH TIM BREWSTERIn two short years as the head football coach at the University of Minnesota, Tim Brewster has taken some big steps toward getting Golden Gopher program back to its rightful place in the world of college football.

Brewster has used his positive outlook and boundless energy to bring in two highly-regarded recruiting classes.

On the field, the Gophers returned to postseason play in 2008 and were ranked as high as No. 17 in the nation for part of the season.

In 2008, Brewster’s squad raced out to a 7-1 record to open the sea-son. The Gophers were ranked No. 17 in the BCS at the end of October. Minnesota took part in the 2008 Insight Bowl, as Brewster led the Gophers to one of the biggest single-season turnarounds of the year.

A renewed emphasis on recruiting may be the most visible phase of Brewster’s plan to help Minnesota football make history again. That was proven out in February of each of the past two seasons. Brewster and his staff signed a consensus top-25 recruiting class that some experts even rated among the nation’s top 15 in 2008. The significance of this accomplishment would be difficult to overstate at one the nation’s traditional recruiting powers let alone Minnesota, where the average Rivals ranking for the Gophers’ previous six recruit-ing classes was 54th. Brewster and his staff followed that up with a 2009 class that ranked in the top third of the nation.

But recruiting is just one building block of a blueprint Brewster devel-oped while helping Mack Brown turn North Carolina from ACC doormat into a national power and rebuild Texas into one of the country’s elite programs.

Brewster came to Minnesota after spending the previous five years as an assistant coach in the National Football League, including the 2005 and 2006 seasons as the tight ends coach of the Denver Broncos. In addition to his productivity as a college recruiter, Brewster has also built a strong reputation for developing players during his 23-year coaching career.

Last season, wide receiver Eric Decker and defensive end Willie VanDeSteeg both earned first-team All-Big Ten honors. Decker set a Minnesota record for receptions in a season for the second consecutive year and became just the third Gopher wideout to record a 1,000-yard receiving season. VanDeSteeg finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in tackles for loss and finished No. 4 all-time in sacks.

It marked the first time the Gophers had multiple first-team All-Big Ten selections since 2005. VanDeSteeg’s honor was also the first time a Minnesota defender had been voted to the first team since 2004.In his first season at Minnesota, Brewster mentored then-freshman quarterback Adam Weber, who broke nearly all of the Gophers’ single-season passing and total offense records during the 2007 season. Weber continued to improve in his sophomore campaign and was a 2008 second-team All-Big Ten selection.

In all, Minnesota had six athletes earn all-conference accolades in 2008, the most since the Gophers had a half-dozen on the 2005 All-Big Ten squad.

In 2007, Brewster helped coach safety Dominique Barber to second-team All-Big Ten accolades and personally worked with punter Justin Kucek, expanding his repertoire with the effective and efficient flop punt and helping him evolve into one of the conferences top punters.

Brewster was named Minnesota’s 26th head football coach on Jan. 17, 2007 after spending the previous five seasons as an assistant coach in the National Football League.

(Oct. 3, 2009) -- In a fourth quarter filled with big plays, Minnesota fell short in a 31-28 setback to Wisconsin at TCF Bank Stadium.

The Gophers trailed by 10 points with less than three minutes left, but drove the length of the field and scored a touchdown with 2:13 remaining to pull within three. Minnesota got the ball back 30 seconds later, but the Badgers forced a game-ending fumble in the final minute. It was Wisconsin’s sixth straight win in the battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe.

Wisconsin RB John Clay had a big day with 32 carries for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Clay led a devastating Wisconsin ground game in the second half with 149 of his yards coming after halftime. The Badgers totaled 232 of their 295 rushing yards in the second half.

It was another big day for Gophers’ senior receiver Eric Decker, as well. Decker caught eight passes for 140 yards and his spectacular diving catch on a fourth-and-16 play on the Gophers’ final drive gave him exactly 3,000 yards for his career, surpassing Ron Johnson’s Minnesota career record total of 2,989.

THE PURDUE SERIES

LAST TIME VS. PURDUE

Saturday’s game will be the 66th gridiron meeting between the University of Minnesota and Purdue. Min-nesota leads the series 32-30-3, winning 17-6 last season.

Despite last season’s victory at Purdue, Minnesota has won just twice in its last 11 attempts vs. the Boilermakers. The only other Minnesota win during that stretch was a 42-35, double-overtime victory at the Metrodome back in 2005.

(Oct. 25, 2008 - Minneapolis) -- Minnesota defeated Purdue 17-6 in a defensive battle. Adam Weber accounted for 276 total yards and two scores as Minnesota improved to 7-1 for the first time since 2002.

The Gophers overcame 12 penalties and forced four turnovers. A stingy Gopher defense surrendered just 226 yards (108 passing). Minnesota defeated Purdue on the road for the first time since 1990.

With the game hanging in the balance with a four-point lead in the fourth quarter, Weber converted on two huge third downs deep in Minnesota territory. He connected with Eric Decker four four yards on a 3rd-and-2 from the Minnesota 27 and with Brandon Green for 11 yards on a 3rd-and-9 from the 37. Weber then made the game-changing play, running 39 yards up the middle to the Boiler 9-yard line. On the ensuing play, he tossed a 9-yard TD to Jack Simmons and the Gophers led 17-6 with 6:14 to go. Min-nesota recorded three sacks on the next possession to essentially put the game away.

Weber completed 21-of-34 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 62 yards on 13 car-ries. In his first career start, Brandon Green stepped up with five catches for 101 yards.

GOPHERS vs. BIG TEN

126 YEARS AND COUNTING ...There’s little doubt that the University of Minnesota is one of the most historically significant programs in all of college football. The Golden Gophers are in their 126th season of collegiate football in 2009. The Golden Gophers enter the 2009 campaign with an all-time record of 634-456-44 (.578 winning percent-age).

Minnesota has played the fourth-most seasons in the history of college football. Only Rutgers (139), Michigan (129) and Navy (128) have played more. In fact, by the end of 2009, only 21 schools in the nation will have completed at least 120 seasons of college football. Only four schools -- including Min-nesota -- will have played 125 years of intercollegiate football by the end of this season.

AYE, CAPTAIN!

NET PROFIT

The Golden Gophers elected six captains prior to the 2009 season. Seniors Garrett Brown, Lee Campbell, Eric Decker, Simoni Lawrence and Eric Small join junior Adam Weber with that distinction this season.

Weber was the first sophomore ever to serve as a team captain at the University of Minnesota last season and is now a two-time captain. Decker is also a two-time team captain.

The Gophers have only had 13 players ever earn the distinction of captain twice in their career. Weber would be the first-ever three-year Gopher captain should he be voted as such next season.

Through the first five games of the 2009 season, Minnesota’s net punting average (punt yardage-minus return yards/touchbacks) ranks No. 11 in the nation. The Gophers’ net punting average is 40.43 yards per punt. The Gophers have punted 23 times with three punts of 50-plus yards and seven downed inside the 20-yard line. Opponents are averaging just 3.4 yards per return against the Minnesota punt coverage team and have only returned 10 of the 23 Gopher punts.

RETURN TO SENDERThe return game was a definite strength for the Gophers in 2008. Minnesota was the No. 2 team in the Big Ten and ranked No. 15 in the nation in average kickoff return yards. The Gophers averaged 24.04 yards per kickoff return last season. The longest kickoff return last season was turned in by Troy Stoud-ermire, who went 60 yards at the Insight Bowl vs. Kansas.

The Gophers nearly doubled their punt-return average in 2008, averaging 9.94 yards per return. Min-nesota ranked No. 5 in the Big Ten and No. 46 in the nation in punt returns.

So far in the 2009 season, the Gophers have continued to improve in the return game. Minnesota ranks No. 9 in the country and No. 1 in the Big Ten with an average punt return of 19.0 yards, but they’ve only returned three punts all season. Kickoff returner Troy Stoudermire’s first return of the season was a 54-yarder. As a team, the Gophers are averaging 27.23 yards per kickoff return, which ranks No. 14 in the nation and No. 2 in the conference.

SEEING REDMinnesota is 18-of-20 (90 percent) scoring when in the red zone (inside the opponents’ 20-yard line) this season. The Gophers have scored 12 touchdowns in the red zone and kicked six field goals.

The Gophers are tied for No. 28 in the nation in the red zone. Eight teams are still flawless in the red zone this season, including last week’s opponent Wisconsin. Although Minnesota was 4-of-4 in the red zone last week, they settled for twice when they had penetrated the 10-yard line vs. the Badgers.

The Gophers were 36-of-41 (88 percent) in the red-zone during the 2008 season.

TALKIN’ TURNOVERSOne of the biggest factors in Minnesota’s impressive turnaround last season was the Gophers’ ability to cause turnovers. The Gophers created 31 turnovers last season (16 fumble recoveries, 15 interceptions) to rank No. 11 in the nation. Only Iowa created more turnovers in the Big Ten with 32.

The Gophers also ranked No. 16 in the nation in turnover margin (+0.92 avg.). The Minnesota offense took turned it over just 19 times in 2008 (11 fumbles lost, eight INTs).

Minnesota is minus-1 so far this season in turnovers, currently ranking 75th in the nation (-0.20/game) in turnover margin. The Gophers were even in turnovers last week vs. Wisconsin, with three apiece.

MORE RECORDS FOR DECKER

u Gopher quarterback Adam Weber continues to re-write the Minnesota record book. In Week 2, he set the Minnesota record for career completions (his total is now 604). The previous record of 539 comple-tions was held by Cory Sauter (1994-97). Three weeks ago, he set the Gopher career record for passing attempts (his total is now 1,018). Weber set single-season records for passing yards (2,985), comple-tions (258), attempts (449), touchdown passes (24) and total offensive yardage (3,512) in 2007. He now needs 640 yards to break the career mark for passing yardage (Bryan Cupito, 2003-06 - 7,446) and just 11 more touchdowns (Bryan Cupito, 2003-06 - 55) to break the career touchdown pass record.

u Adam Weber is the only quarterback on the Minnesota roster who has ever thrown a collegiate pass.u Weber’s 271 yards passing last week vs. Wisconsin marked a season-high for the junior quarterback. u Sophomore DeLeon Eskridge rushed for 60 yards on 14 carries (4.3-yard average) last week vs. Wisconsin to lead the Gophers on the ground. His 60-yard effort was his best outing of the season. It was the largest rushing total for Eskridge, since he went for 80 yards against Michigan last season at the Metrodome. Eskridge is second in rushing in the Gopher statistics, having rushed for 165 yards on 37 carries in 2009.

u Duane Bennett scored on his first touch of the 2009 season, taking a carry around right end for a 16-yard touchdown at Syracuse. It was his first touch since Sept. 6, 2008 when he suffered a season-ending knee injury.u Bennett scored three TDS at Northwestern earlier this year. He is the first Gopher to accomplish that feat since DeLeon Eskridge did it vs. Montana State on Sept. 13, 2008.u Eskridge, a sophomore, rushed for more than 100 yards twice in 2008, including a season-high 124 yards in Minnesota’s 27-20 win at Illinois. He also had three multiple-touchdown contests.u Red-shirt freshman Kevin Whaley saw the first extended action of his career at Northwestern. He carried five times for 31 yards vs. Northwestern.u Junior fullback Jon Hoese is a former walk-on. He scored on two of his first three career carries at the Insight Bowl last season. He is averaging 8.0 yards per carry so far this season.

u Senior wide receiver Eric Decker has recorded three new Minnesota records already in the 2009 season. Last week, he became Minnesota’s career receiving yardage record-holder. Earlier this season, he set a new record for career receptions and for consecutive 100-yard receiving games. Decker was a semi-finalist for the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver in 2008. For two straight seasons, Decker set the Minnesota single-season record for receptions. He hauled in 67 passes in 2007 and smashed that record with 84 receptions last season. Decker became just the fourth Gopher receiver ever to compile a 1,000-yard season in 2008, finishing with 1,074 yards to rank No. 2 on the school single-season chart.

It was discovered Dan Orseske had mononucleosis the night before the game, pressing Haudan into duty. His first career punt pinned Cal inside its own 20-yard line. In just three games as a punter, Haudan is averaging 41.6 yards per punt with seven fair catches and four downed inside the 20.

u Junior long snapper Ryan Coleman has been very consistent since taking over the long-snapping duties last season. He has delivered 38 successful long snaps through five games this season (23 punt, 8 FG, 15 PAT). Coleman made 128 snaps in 2008, with only one bad snap.u Junior placekicker Eric Ellestad remained perfect on PATs (14-14), hitting both attempts last week. He is 7-of-8 on field goals, with the lone miss being tipped at the line on a missed assignment up front. Dave Mona, Dave Lee, Darrell Thompson, Mike Grimm

MINNESOTA at SYRACUSE

TCF BANK STADIUM FACTS• TCF Bank Stadium was designed as an open-air, horseshoe-shaped bowl with a collegiate look and feel. The stadium is oriented to take advantage of the views of downtown Minneapolis.

• The brick façade and arches resemble that of Minnesota’s previous on-campus football venue, Memorial Stadium, which hosted its final game on Nov. 21, 1981.

• The University exceeded its initial fund-raising goal of $86 million.

• Construction began on TCF Bank Stadium on July 11, 2007. It took over 1.3 million work hours to complete the project by July , 2009.

• The main high definition video measures approximately 48 feet high by 108 feet wide and boasts Daktronics HD-16 technology.

• The main high definition video board is the third largest in all of college athletics in terms of square footage. Only Texas and Mississippi State have larger boards.

• The main video board screen is made up of more than four million LED lights that if placed end to end would extend for 47.5 miles.

• At the project’s peak, 750 construction workers were working on TCF Bank Stadium.

• The site of TCF Bank Stadium covers 1,194,645 SF or approximately 27.4 acres.

• The playing surface is FieldTurf and covers 92,132 SF or approxi-mately 2.1 acres.

• The home locker room at TCF Bank Stadium is 60 yards long by 25 yards wide. It contains 120 cherry wood lockers and is the largest in both professional and college football.

• The design of TCF Bank Stadium allows for expansion to 80,000.

• There are approximately 25,000 seats with permanent chairbacks. All seats between the goal lines have permanent chairbacks.• TCF Bank Stadium includes 1,000 handicap accessible and companion seats.

• There are 37 premium suites, 57 loge boxes, 259 seats in the indoor club and 1,250 seats in the outdoor club at TCF Bank Stadium.

• There are 113 restrooms in TCF Bank Stadium, which include 625 toilets and 268 urinals.

• TCF Bank Stadium has 10 network TV camera positions and seating for 165 members of the media.

• Populous (formerly HOK Sport) served as the primary architect for the building, while Mortensen Construction was the general contractor.

• In excess of 8,800 tons of structural steel was used in the project, with 97 percent recycled steel.

• TCF Bank Stadium contains 24,000 yards of cast-in-place concrete, which is enough concrete to pour a four-inch thick, five-foot wide sidewalk from Minneapolis to Rochester, Minn. (74 miles).

• The masonry includes 525,000 units of concrete block and 760,000 units of full and thin brick.

• There is 72,753 SF or approximately 1.7 acres of glass in TCF Bank Stadium, enough to cover more than 1.25 football fields.

• There are 9,185 Minnesota Block “M”s in TCF Bank Stadium.

• The foundation of TCF Bank Stadium is supported by 2,133 drilled piles, which is equivalent to 15.5 miles of piles.

GOPHER VICTORY WALKThe Golden Gopher football program saw a new tradition take shape in 2007, with the advent of the “Gopher Victory Walk.” Prior to each game, the entire Minnesota football team, led by the Minnesota Marching Band, will walk through the fans at the McNamara Alumni Center, cross Oak Street and head into TCF Bank Stadium.

Each Gopher Victory Walk will begin approximately two hours prior to kickoff.

The Minnesota Football program is encouraging fans to participate in the Gopher Victory Walk through-out the season, by lining the entire path from the McNamara Alumni Center to the stadium and greeting the players as they arrive on game day.

TAKE IT TO THE BANKWhen the Gophers hosted the Air Force Academy on Sept. 12, it marked the first time since Nov. 21, 1981 that college football has been played on campus at Minnesota.

TCF Bank Stadium is the first Big Ten Stadium built in nearly 50 years. Beaver Stadium (Penn State) and Memorial Stadium (Indiana) were both built in 1960.
