Kowboy Jim Prevails in Bank of America Canterbury Park Championship Challenge, July 4, 2018

Canterbury Park specialist Kowboy Jim added another Minnesota win to his resume in Wednesday’s $49,410 Bank of America Canterbury Park Championship Challenge. Final time for the 440-yard race was 21.743 over a fast wet track; the winner earned a 106 speed index. Kowboy Jim ($10.00) is bred, owned and trained by Dean Frey. Nakia Ramirez was aboard for the Independence Day victory, marking her first stakes win at Canterbury and her first Challenge stakes belt buckle. All of Kowboy Jim’s six career wins have come at Canterbury, and he has never finished worse than third at the track. He was the winner of the 2017 $81,000 Canterbury Park Derby and placed third in the AQHA Derby Challenge Championship (G3) at Prairie Meadows. While one half of the exacta was a Canterbury specialist, the other half made his Canterbury debut in the local Championship Challenge: Damn Strait. Trained by Stacy Charette-Hill for owner M. C Stucks, Damn Strait finished three-quarters of a length behind Kowboy Jim. Jorge Torres had the call. Damn Strait was bred in Texas by Bobby Cox, by Dominyun and out of the Jody O Toole mare Hottesticketintown. The 4-year-old gelding has only finished out of the money once in 14 career starts and has earned over $131,000. Completing the trifecta was Bout Tree Fiddy. Like Kowboy Jim, Bout Tree Fiddy is a triple play for his connections: trainer Patrick Swan co-bred and co-owns Bout Tree Fiddy with Rusty Allred. Bout Tree Fiddy is a 4-year-old son of Ivory James and is out of Hollie Jollie, by Fredicksberg, making him a half-brother to the fastest qualifier to the 2017 $165,600 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity, Olivias Jett. Bout Tree Fiddy was ridden by Brayan Velazquez, who also rode the Oklahoma-bred gelding in his previous 2018 Canterbury start, a second-place finish in an allowance race in June. Bout Tree Fiddy is a

multiple stakes winner with earnings of $147,924 in 23 lifetime starts. Heavy favorite and 2016 champion of the 2016 Bank of America Canterbury Park Championship Challenge, Ajs High, did not hit the board. Ajs High had a troubled trip, weaved through traffic, and closed well to gain fourth place. Completing the field were Faster Than Hasta, Fast N Famous Jeans, Okeyfreight, Your Just Jesse, Nsm Skydancer, Pure Favorite and Fowl Play.

Corona Springs Victorious in Canterbury Park Distaff Challenge, July 4, 2018

Canterbury’s current leading trainer, Jason Olmstead, and leading jockey, Cristian Esqueda, teamed up to bring Corona Springs to the winner’s circle in the $34,740 Boehringer Ingelheim Canterbury Park Distaff Challenge on July 4. Corona Springs ($7.40) was visually impressive in the paddock and carried her class to the gate and to the wire with a half-length victory as the second-favorite in the field. The final time for the 400-yard event was 19.766; the track record is 19.583. Corona Springs earned a 106 speed index. Corona Springs is a 4-year-old Corona Cartel filly bred in Utah by McColee Land and Livestock. She is out of the First Down Dash mare Aquafina, a daughter of Runaway Wave who is also the dam of multiple stakes winners and champions. Graded stakes placed Aquafina is a full sister to recent Ed Burke Million Futurity winner Wave Her Down, as well as Ocean Runaway and Wave

Carver. She is owned by Tom Scheckel. Though Corona Springs had not won a race since she broke her maiden at Canterbury Park in 2017, she had finished in the money ten times in 16 starts. Last year, she finished in fourth place in the same race, beaten a neck by Jr Rock Star and Blacks Cartel. 2017 Leading Challenge trainer Bob Johnson saddled several horses in the Distaff Challenge, including second-place finisher Gold Diggin Queen. When trials were deemed unnecessary for the Canterbury Park Distaff Challenge, many of the nominees entered in an optional claiming event for fillies in mares in mid-June. The 350-yard prep race was won by daylight by Gold Diggin Queen, fresh off a ship from Los Alamitos. The Tres Seis filly has won multiple allowance races in Calfornia and has now earned her first berth into a Challenge Championship event.

Chase Clark had the call on Wednesday for owners Martin and Stephanie Webb. She was bred in California by Vessels Stallion Farm LLC, out of the First Down Dash mare Its Good To Be Queen. The other California bred filly in the field, Glen Ellyn, finished in third place as the second-longest price in the field. Nik Goodwin was aboard for trainer Dean Frey and owner Steve Burns. Burns also bred the filly, with James Markum, out of the Teller Cartel mare Truly Delightful. The daughter of Favorite Cartel was making her first start at Canterbury after racing at Los Alamitos, Ruidoso and Remington. This was her second stakes attempt and her first time to hit the board; she is two for 12 in her career to date. Completing the field were Jr Rock Star, Late N Dirty, Ima Dashin Follie, Country Curl, Mary Paintyourwagon, Kaelies Dividend and Blacks Cartel.

Disco Wagon Dances to the Wire in the Canterbury Park Derby, July 8, 2018

Disco Wagon made his first stakes win an impressive one, winning the $78,450 Canterbury Park Derby, the richest 3-year-old Quarter Horse race of the Minnesota meet. Jorge Torres drove Disco Wagon home in 19.913 in the 400-yard race to earn a 102 speed index. Disco Wagon ($11.60) was the fourth fastest qualifier to the Canterbury Park Derby from three trials on June 24. In eight lifetime starts, Disco Wagon has yet to finish out of the money, including three wins, and has earnings of $70,874. Disco Wagon is a triple play for the Charette-Hill family: Stacy Charette-Hill trains and she and husband Randy Hill own the gelding. Hill and Vwp Jr Inc bred the son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon in Oklahoma, out of the Check Him Out mare Check This Disco. Df Apollitical Sign completed the exacta as the longest price in the field and eighth fastest qualifier. In his trial, she was third behind post-time favorite First of 15 and Disco Wagon. In the final, she drew between Disco Wagon and multiple futurity winner A Jordon Reed, and dueled with that pair and Eagle Deluxe to get up for second. This was the first stakes appearance for Df Apollitical Sign; just three starts back, the filly was claimed and was a late nomination to the Canterbury Park Derby. Df Apollitical Sign was ridden by Julian Serrano, who also picked up two stakes wins on the card and is trained by Shawna Manriquez for owner Glacia Fagan. The 3-year-old daughter of Apollitical Sign was bred in Oklahoma by Beverly Marcom, out of the Stoli mare Stolin Sign. A length behind the top two finishers was Jason Olmstead trainee Eagle Deluxe with Nakia Ramirez aboard. The duo bobbled at the start but made up ground and closed fast to get up at the wire. Owned by Tom and Bill Maher and Movin On, and bred by Grant Farms LLC, Eagle Deluxe won the Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile last year as well as the NCQHRA Futurity, ran fourth in the Valley Junction, and as a 3-year-old, qualified for the Heritage Place Derby (G3). Eagle Deluxe is by One Famous Eagle and is out of the Corona Cartel mare Corona Deluxe. Completing the field were A Jordon Reed, First of 15, Marfilmio, California Blossom, Miniscule Monster, Olivias Jett and Painted Dynasty.

Zoes Sassy Miracle Breaks Maiden with Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile Win, July 7, 2018

Zoes Sassy Miracle, second in two previous lifetime starts, broke her maiden stylishly with a win in the second of four stakes on the Canterbury Park Sunday card, the $20,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile. Julian Serrano picked up his first of two stakes wins on the card. Serrano and Zoes Sassy Miracle finished a neck in front of Chocolatepaintedkiss and finished with a time of 18.094 and a 90 speed index in the 350 yard event. Horses that failed to qualify to the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity after trials on June 16 were eligible to compete in the Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile, preferred by times from the trials. Zoes Sassy Miracle was the second fastest from the next ten fastest horses after the Futurity qualifiers. The filly was second to Devins Project in her trial; she was also second in her debut at Remington Park. Zoes Sassy Miracle ($7.20), the post-time favorite, is trained by Mark Barnes. She was bred in South Dakota by her owners, Lowell, Lynn and Becky Husman. The Capo di Capi filly is out of Homemade Miracle, by Dean Miracle.

Closing fast to finish just a neck behind the winner was Chocolatepaintedkiss, ridden by Jorge Torres and trained by Stacy Charette-Hill. Chocolatepaintedkiss broke her maiden at Remington and was the post-time favorite in her trial, the first of five from June 16, but she finished in fourth place. The first three finishers all qualified to the final, including Bhr Flashing Effort, who also won the Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity last month. Chocolatepaintedkiss is a homebred for Mary Kirby, bred in Oklahoma by Second Painted Sign and out of the Azoom mare Ramblin Kisses. Third place finisher Dashing Fajita is trained by Vic Hanson for owner and breeder Brenda Reiswig. Bred in Oklahoma, she is sired by One Dashing Eagle and is out of the Corona Cartel mare Anita Fajita. She was sixth in her trial, the first of five. In four starts, she has run against Chocolatepaintedkiss three times, and was second to her at Remington when she broke her maiden. Ismael Suarez Ricardo has ridden the filly in all her lifetime starts and had the call again on Sunday. Completing the field were Sunlight Seven, Uptown Girl, Diamalou, Corona My Prize, Wonderland, High Dollar Return and Kool Energy.

Jess Doin Time Victorious in the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity, July 8, 2018

For the second time in three years, a local Minnesota-bred Quarter Horse has won the $146,400 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity: Jess Doin Time. Jess Doin Time and Julian Serrano broke sharply and edged out Miss Energy P by three-quarters of a length in the richest Quarter Horse race of the Canterbury Park meet. Final time for the 350-yard race was 17.940; Jess Doin Time earned a 94 speed index. Jess Doin Time ($39.40) was an upset winner despite winning her debut two starts back and running a professional second-place finish behind Shez Sizzling in her trial, who went off as the co-favorite. Jess Doin Time is owned and by Tom and Jan Pouliot. Tom is a longtime breeder and owner and serves as treasurer of the Minnesota Quarter Horse Racing Association. The Apollitical Jess filly is out of his Rare Form mare, Lenas Rare Lady, and is trained by Jason Olmstead. Second-place finisher Miss Energy P was the co-favorite in the race

after finishing a close second in her trial as the third fastest qualifier. She turned the tables on the Maghelene, who defeated her that day by a nose to be the second fastest qualifier but returned to finish third in the final. Miss Energy P is out of the First Down Dash mare First Down Energy, making Miss Energy P a half-sister to Terrific Energy, a multiple graded stakes winning mare who also produced stakes winners such as Terrific Synergy and Thermonuclear Energy. She was bred in Texas by Bielau Oaks. The Pyc Paint Your Wagon filly is owned by Michael Pohl and is trained by Stacy Charette-Hill. Jorge Torres was aboard, who also rode the filly in her maiden-breaking debut at Remington Park and her trial. Third place finisher Maghelene was the second fastest qualifier to the Northlands Futurity and won her trial on June 16. Maghelene hails from the barn of leading trainer Jason Olmstead and was ridden by leading jockey

Cristian Esqueda. She is owned by Tom Scheckel. The daughter of One Famous Eagle was bred in Oklahoma by Jj Cool L LLC, out of Belle Helene, who was second in the 2013 $1,000,000 Rainbow Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso and has career earnings of over $200,000. Belle Helene is also a half-sister to A Revenant, who won the 2016 $1,000,000 Rainbow Futurity (G1) and earned over $600,000 in four career starts. Two years ago, Pyc Jess Bite Mydust won the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity as the only Minnesota-bred in the field; Pyc Jess Bite Mydust finished third in the Bob Morehouse stakes earlier on the same card and is among the highest earning Minnesota-breds in Canterbury history. Completing the field were Devins Project, Mildred Didrickson, Cashair, Chicken Lips, Dashin My Lady, Bhr Flashing Effort and Shes Sizzling.

Dickey Bob Bests Brother to win Bob Morehouse Stakes, July 8, 2018 It’s not every day that two full Quarter Horse siblings draw into the same races, let alone post positions next to each other in the gate, but owners and breeders Bruce and Judy Lunderborg had the opportunity to cheer for both 3-year-old Dickey Bob and 4-year-old Pyc Jess Bite Mydust in the first stakes race on Saturday at Canterbury Park. The richest race day of the Canterbury Park Quarter Horse meet began with the $40,100 Bob Morehouse Stakes, restricted to 3-year-old and up Minnesota-breds. Heavily-favored Pyc Jess Bite Mydust, one of the richest Minnesota-bred Quarter Horses, broke last and created his own trip on the far outside of the track. He closed fast to make up ground but could not catch his own little brother, Dickey Bob. Dickey Bob ($12.00) was ridden by Denny Velazquez for trainer Jason Olmstead. The winner cleared the field by a length and a half, earned a 96 speed index, and posted a time of 17.879 in the 350-yard race. This was the fifth career win for the gelding and it was his second stakes victory. In 2017, Dickey Bob won the Minnesota Futurity; in the previous race on the same card, Pyc Jess Bite Mydust won the Minnesota Derby. Pyc Jess Bite Mydust won the $165,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity in 2016 as the only Minnesota-bred in the field. The son of Apollitical Jess has racked up over $167,000 in career earnings, including a win in the $50,000 Minnesota Derby in 2017 and an appearance in the Grade 1 Southwest Juvenile Championship at Zia as a 2-year-old. Both horses sired by Apollitical Jess and are out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Paint Or More. Rey D Arranque and Marcus Swiontek split the brothers to finish second. The 6-year-old son of Afterallitsme is trained by Randy Weidner for owner Eric Castro. He was bred in Minnesota by Ken Quade, out of the Jazzing Hi mare Jazzing Jackie. This was Rey D Arranque’s third appearance and best performance in the Bob Morehouse Stakes; he finished third in 2017. The gelding has three wins in 28 lifetime starts and earnings of over $43,000. Completing the field were Curious James, Gramma Ella, Streak N Sparks, Itinkican Itinkican and Blacks Cartel.

Ms Haulin Chic the Speed of Speed in Dash in a Flash Stakes on Extreme Day, July 14, 2018

Though the camels, ostriches and zebras have the spotlight on Extreme Day at Canterbury Park, the horses also participate in the events of the day with unusual or less common distances and surfaces. For the Quarter Horses, that meant a race at the shortest recognized distance, 110 yards. For good measure, the track turned it into a stakes event: the $15,000 Dash in a Flash. Saturday’s twelfth running of the Dash in a Flash went to the only horse with a previous win at the distance, Ms Haulic Chic. Ms Haulin Chic ($9.20) covered the football field distance in 6.978 and earned a 99 speed index. Winning trainer R. Allen Hybsha has now won the Dash in a Flash for two consecutive years, though with different horses. Last year, he brought Lota James to the winner’s circle. “She’s super, very laid back, just a kitten. Never gets excited,” Hybsha observed about this year’s winning filly. His wife, Camy, agreed, “She’s a joy. She didn’t even break as well as she usually does, but we knew she could do it.” The Hybshas were expecting her good early speed, as the 4-year-old filly recently broke the track record for 220 yards at Remington this spring. Ms Haulin Chic is sired by Dominyun and is out of the Valiant Hero mare Valiant Chic. She was bred in Oklahoma by Racehorse Inc. Ismael Suarez Ricardo was aboard again and has ridden the filly in seven of her last eight starts. Ms Haulin Chic is owned by Haulin Assets Racing and is now seven for 15 lifetime with over $70,000 in career earnings.

Bout Tree Fiddy and Brayan Velazquez were close behind the winner in second place. Bout Tree Fiddy is trained by Patrick Swan, who also co-bred and owns with Carry Allred. Bout Tree Fiddy hit the board for the 14th time in 23 starts in Saturday’s race, and has earned $150,000 in his career. The 4-year-old gelding was bred in Oklahoma, by Ivory James, out of Hollie Jollie, by Fredricksburg. He recently finished third in the Bank of America Canterbury Park Championship Challenge and was third in the Canterbury Park Derby last year. Between Canterbury starts, Bout Tree Fiddy made multiple stakes appearances at Prairie Meadows, Will Rogers and Remington. It was tight for third place in the short race, but Bye Byefreighttrain put a head in front of post-time favorite Ferrari James. Bye Byefreighttrain is trained by Shawna Manriquez for owner and breeder L. P. Frank; Julian Serrano had the call. The 5-year-old gelded son of Freighttrain B was bred in Oklahoma, out of the Takin on the Cash mare Bye Bye Bygones. The multiple graded stakes runner was also third in last year’s running of the Dash in a Flash. Completing the field were Ferrari James, Ms First Prize Rainy, Gianna Grace, Park Avenue Air, Eos Wing Man and Fast N Famous Jeans. Perfect Lota was scratched at the gate.

Berkley Packer Sweep Canterbury Double Aboard Htr Tequilla in Skip Zimmerman, August 10, 2018

Berkley Packer knew his way around the winner’s circle by the time the $25,000 Skip Zimmerman Memorial Stakes was run at Canterbury Park on Friday night. Packer won the opened on the card, the $24,000 Mean Competitor hook stakes and returned to sweep the double in the Skip Zimmerman with Htr Miamor Tequilla. Trained by Canterbury Park Hall of Fame trainer Ed Ross Hardy, Htr Miamor Tequilla ($10.80) gained an early lead in the race and held on to win by half a length over a full, deep field of accomplished older horses. The 350-yard event was open to 3-year-olds and up, earnings preferred; final time was 17.593 and the winner earned a speed index of 105. Htr Miamor Tequilla is a 3-year-old colt by Heart of the Cartel, out of the Tinys First Corona mare Shiela Tequilla, owned and bred by Htr Stables LLC in Oklahoma.

The colt was making his second start at Canterbury; he finished second in an optional claiming event in July against many of the same horses but was placed first after Bye Byefreighttrain was disqualified. After debuting at Fair Meadows last summer, Htr Miamor Tequilla is now six for 11 and is undefeated in Minnesota. Runner up Corona Springs also posted a triple-digit speed figure, coming home in 17.684 to earn a 102. The 4-year-old filly was last seen at Canterbury on July 4 when she won the $34,000 Boehringer Ingelheim Canterbury Park Distaff Challenge and punched her ticket to the Grade 1 Distaff Challenge Championship this fall at Los Alamitos. Corona Springs is trained by Jason Olmstead, who has earned another leading training title at Canterbury Park and was ridden by the meet’s leading Quarter Horse jockey, Cristian Esqueda.

Corona Springs is a Utah-bred filly owned by Tom Scheckel and bred by McColee Land and Livestock, by Corona Cartel and out of the First Down Dash mare Aquafina. Completing the trifecta was Bye Byefreighttrain and jockey Roberto Valero. Shawna Manriquez trains the gelded son of Freighttrain B for owner and breeder L. P. Frank. Bye Bye Freighttrain is a 5-year-old Oklahoma-bred out of Bye Bye Bygones, by Takin on the Cash. Bye Bye Freightrain is a multiple graded stakes placed gelding with earnings in excess of $275,000 and eight career wins in 32 starts. Completing the field were Painted Dynasty, Bout Tree Fiddy, Gold Diggin Queen, Olivias Jett, First of 15, Jr Rock Star and La Mos Pyc. The field drew four horses on the also eligibles list, all scratched: Eos Wing Man, Fowl Play, Jjsir James and Marfilmio.

Blue Eyed Andy Sets Sight on Rail to Win Mean Competitor Stakes, August 10, 2018

Rarely can one find a ground-saving trip on the rail from the seven hole, but that’s exactly what jockey Berkley Packer managed to achieve to win the first of two Quarter Horse stakes at Canterbury Park on Friday night.

When the horse in the fifth position missed the break and the horses on the inside ran wide around the turn, Packer guided Blue Eyed Andy to the rail and to the winner’s circle in the 870-yard $24,000 Mean Competitor Stakes. Final time was 47.042.

Blue Eyed Andy ($6.40) is trained by Allen Hybsha for Aspen Partnership. Hybsha commended Packer for his trip in the stakes race, “Excellent. Couldn’t ask for a better ride.” Hybsha also trained the 1, Lota Legacy, who finished fourth. Packer would sweep the daily double of Quarter Horse stakes on Friday night with a win in the second race on the card, the $25,000 Skip Zimmerman Memorial Stakes.

Blue Eyed Andy may not have blue eyes, but the hazel-eyed black gelding is striking as a 6-year-old veteran with seven career wins, six of which have been around the turn. He has not won since September at Prairie Meadows but always showed up, hitting the board in all but one of his six starts since that win and finishing fourth in the Grade 3 Covered Bridges Stakes in Altoona.

Richard Jonseon bred Blue Eyed Andy in Oklahoma, by the Oak Tree Special stallion Furrtreeous and out of Flooz Baby, by Takin on the Cash.

A length and a half behind the winner was Streakin in the City and Marcus Swiontek. The 5-year-old gelding was making his first start from the barn of trainer Randy Weidner, and just his ninth career start.

Streakin in the City, owned by W. Gary and Susan K. Mangus, spent most of his career in Indiana before racing once at Priarie Meadows last fall, this was his first start since October and his first at Canterbury. His only previous start in an 870-yard race resulted in a third-place finish via disqualification, though he initially won the race by over six lengths.

Streakin in the City is by Streakin Six Cartel and out of the Thoroughbred City Zip mare Zip of Fools. He was bred in Kentucky by his owners.

Hiclass Man was the morning line and post-time favorite, but he and Brayan Velazquez could not sustain his second-place start around the turn and into the stretch. The Patrick Swan trainee is owned and bred by Jo Rice in Oklahoma, by Brimmerton and out of the Separatist mare Hiclass Kamikaze. The 5-year-old has five career wins, three wins at 870-yards and two victories in Minnesota.

Completing the field were Lota Legacy, Haynes Blue Boy, No Such Tellin and Toast on Fire. Wicked Valentine was scratched.

Jess Doin Time Earns Second Stakes Win in NCQHRA Futurity, August 11, 2018

Three different horses had won three different futurities at Canterbury Park this summer, and all three qualified for Saturday’s $45,000 North Central Quarter Horse Racing Association Futurity. This time, it was Minnesota-bred filly Jess Doin Time who found her way to the winner’s circle. Jess Doin Time was the upset winner of the meet’s richest race, the $146,400 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity. On Saturday, she was the post-time favorite, paying fans just $4.40 in her half-length victory. Final time for the 350-yard race was 17.667; the winner earned a 103 speed index. Leading connections Jason Olmstead and Cristian Esqueda teamed up for the filly’s victory; after the race, Olmstead accepted MQHRA Trainer of the Month recognition and a buckle for his fourth Canterbury Park leading trainer title. Tom and Jan Pouliot bred the filly in Minnesota, by Apollitical Jess and out of the Rare Form mare Lenas Rare Lady. “From birth, we thought she was special,” Pouliot reminisced. “We are so incredibly lucky. She dueled in this race and was really pushed by Apollitical Mogul in the stretch”, he observed of the filly’s barnmate and second-place finisher. Apollitical Mogul, also trained by Olmstead, hooked up early with Jess Doin Time as the pair broke next to

each other. The duo fought throughout the stretch, but Jess Doin Time prevailed. Apollitical Mogul, with Denny Velazquez up, earned a 101 speed index. The rest of the field trailed over two lengths behind the exacta. Apollitical Mogul is owned by Tom and Bill Maher and was bred in Texas by Mercy Hinklins Horse Farm LLC. The filly is also by Apollitical Jess and is out of the Corona Cartel mare Cash Cartel. Fillies dominated the race as the Capo de Capi filly Zoes Sassy Miracle completed the trifecta. Zoes Sassy Miracle was the second choice in the wagering and on the morning line after winning the consolation for the Northlands Futurity, the $20,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile in July. Zoes Sassy Miracle is trained by Mark Barnes and was ridden on Saturday by Julian Serrano, who was also aboard in her only stakes victory. She was bred in South Dakota by her owners, Lynn, Becky and Lowell Husman, out of the Dean Miracle mare Homemade Miracle. Completing the field were Sunlight Seven, Thisbetterwork, Ive Got This, Ima Jj Junior, Cr Lil Bron and Bhr Flashing Effort. Frenemies was scratched.

Dickey Bob Noses Out Brother in Cash Caravan, August 11, 2018

Last year, Dickey Bob and Pyc Jess Bite Mydust, full brothers, competed in different races as a 2-year-old and 3-year-old, respectively. Now, at 3 and 4, the Minnesota-bred geldings are eligible for the same stakes races and have faced each other twice this summer at Canterbury Park.

In the second matchup, the $35,000 Cash Caravan Stakes on Saturday afternoon in Shakopee, Pyc Jess Bite Mydust missed the break and gave the race to the younger sibling, Dickey Bob.

Dickey Bob ($5.00) and jockey Denny Velazquez broke on top and led the 400-yard race to a gate-to-wire victory. The duo finished in 20.039 and earned a 98 speed index.

Pyc Jess Bite Mydust, with Cristian Esquda aboard, broke next to last and spotted the field several lengths before gaining ground to finish just a head behind Dickey Bob.

Pyc Jess Bite Mydust broke slowly in their previous matchup, the $40,000 Bob Morehouse, but swung to the outside of the field and swept up for a third-place finish. The two geldings are owned and bred in Minnesota by Bruce and Judy Lunderborg, who remarked that, “Pyc Jess Bite Mydust is the faster of the two, he has proven himself many times. But to have these two full brothers, it’s amazing.”

The geldings are by Apollitical Jess and out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Paint Or More. Though the Lunderborgs did not breed the mare, they did race her at Remington, Canterbury and Prairie Meadows. As a 2-year-old, she won the NCQHRA Futurity at Canterbury; ironically, this year’s running of that stakes race was scheduled as the next race on the Canterbury Saturday stakes card.

Pyc Jess Bite Mydust was the 2016 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse of the Meet and has earned over $175,000.

Rey D Arranque, who split the brothers in the Bob Morehouse, finished third on Saturday. Rey D Arranque is trained by Randy Weidner for owner Eric Castro. The 6-year-old gelding is in good form in 2018, with three stakes appearances and hitting the board in three of five starts this year.

He was bred by Ken Quade in Minnesota, by Afterallitsme and out of the Jazzing Hi mare Jazzing Jackie.

Completing the field were Gramma Ella, Curious James, Polar Xpress and Blacks Cartel. Streak N Sparks was scratched.

Von Ohlens Raised State-bred Champs (continued from page 1)

The years were passing swiftly and a nagging item on the bucket list kept gnawing at them for attention. “I wasn’t getting any younger. I was in my early fifties,’’ Rodney recalled. “We decided if we were going to do it, we’d better do it then.’’ It did not transpire that fluidly, of course, although there were times in the first year or two when it seemed that horse racing was a tree with money growing on it. Everything happened so easily; the pieces seemed to fall in place by themselves. They were the owners/breeders of a horse named Fols Bunka, who put them on the quarter horse map in 1987 by winning the $200,000 Black Gold Futurity at Blue Ribbons Downs. The mare they bought at that random farm house was Bunch of Money and she was in foal. They hauled her back to Minnesota and she gave birth to Redi to Par. A subsequent trip to Oklahoma and mating with Six Fols resulted in Fols Bunka. Rodney’s recollection of those days is one filled with errors he made during the learning curve that took place, yet lots of good luck to balance it off and some head-shaking occurrences at times too. There were more than 400 entries in the Blue Ribbon Futurity when they sent out that first horse of theirs, Redi to Par, who won his heat by an amazing five lengths, but whose time was 11th on the list of 10 qualifiers. Von Ohlen did not receive much encouragement either when Fols Bunka won the Black Gold Futurity after going seven-for-seven previously. He was approached afterward by a horseman who told him: “I feel bad for you. Here you are almost brand new in the business, and your big day is already behind you.’’ (continued on next page)

Minnesota Quarter Horse Racing Association Setember 201July/August 2018 Page 19

Von Ohlens Raised State-bred Champs (continued from page 1)

The Von Ohlens found success at Canterbury Downs, too, when they showed up there in 1987. “For a while there, I was really hopping,’’ he said. “Everything was going so good it was almost embarrassing. But I found out then that things can change, and change in a hurry.’’ Yet the vicissitudes of the horse business did not stop the Von Ohlens from pursuing their dream. “They ran those Minnesota-breds at tracks all over the place with success,’’ said Ed Ross Hardy, who has trained for them some 15 years. “Sylvia always stayed in the background,’’ said Sharon Wilmes, mother-in-law to Hardy. “But she was a big part of the operation. Rodney always told us how he couldn’t do without her, and we saw that for ourselves.’’

Sylvia cared for the barns in the summer, and Rodney took over in the winter months, and they made regular trips to Oklahoma to breed their mares to quarter horse stallions. “The first 20 to 25 years they’d haul three or four mares down there every season, breed them and haul them back. They made a lot of trips to Oklahoma,’’ Neal added. During one of those trips Rodney ran into a well-known quarter horse trainer named Bob Baffert. “He had a stall near us,’’ he recalled. “He was just making the change to thoroughbreds. Very nice guy.’’ Starting the 2018 season, the Von Ohlens had sent out winners of six different quarter horse stakes races at Canterbury over the years, the best of them undoubtedly First Class Smarty, winner of the

Canterbury Derby, the Northlands Futurity and the Bob Morehouse twice. They had winners in the Minnesota Derby and the Minnesota Futurity three times each. In 2006, First Class Smarty set the record (:17.735) that stands in the Northlands Futurity. They are the second-leading quarter horse owners all time in the Minnesota Festival with six winners. They started the season as second-leading owners in earnings at Canterbury, third in career winners. Rodney lost Syliva last May after a battle with cancer, and says in three years he’ll retire. “We have a mare in the barn in foal,’’ he said. “After that I’ll be done.’’ Yet, the Von Ohlens have already accomplished all they need and more for a place in

Canterbury Park’s Hall of Fame ☺
