Letter from the Police Department, intimating that it has been decided not to proceed further with the scheme of enclosing certain streets and lanes for Playground purposes within this area. "Received".

Letter from D'\ Benjamin, Managing Director of Sweet Bros. Ltd, thanking Council for its kind letter of congratulation, relative to his action in advocating an increase in the B sio .age. "'Received".

Letters from F.M. Burke, M.L.A., (a). Covering letter from the Minister for Education, intimating that the

suggested improvements to the Camdenville Publi~ School Playground will receive his consideration. . . . (b). Covering letter from the Minister for Eaucation, 1nt1m~t~g that Council's proposal to allow certain School-gro~ds in this area to.rema~ open at other than school hours, in order to pr9vide Recreat1on Areas for the Ch1ldren, will receive his consid.era tion. · · ·

(c). Re Deputation to the Minister ~~r Pu~lic Health, t? request that a Doctor be appointed in this Municipality, to give adv1ce and prescr1be for the Unemployed gratis.

(d) • . Covering a letter from the Minister f~ Transport, intimating that he will consider Council's request, regarding the stormwater drainage from King Street Sou . Alderman Dunshea moved that the letters be "Received", and Mr. Burke be thanked for his kind attenti on to the various matters. Seconded by AldeFffian Fleming, and carried.

Letter from the ErSkipeville Ccrunoil, asking for this Council's eo-operation in advocati that in any proposed Legislation for the amalgamation of Municipalities, Newtown and Erskineville Councils should, on account of the amicable relationship existing at aJ.l times, and the general comnro.ni ty interests, be "linked-up''" with the Newtown Counoil. Alderman Solomon moved that the letter be "'Received'~, this Council heartily eo-operate with the Erskineville Council, as requested, - and letters conveying this Council's decision in the matter be forwarded to the Members of Parl~ament for this district. Seconded by Alderman Bugler, and carried.

Letter from R. Hollis, ~.P., stating that there is no drainage reserve at his property in Newman st., . as he paid for the full 20ft., and asking that some practical steps be taken to eliminate the danger of flooding, by the overflow of stormwaters in Railway lane. Alderman Ryan moved that the letter be ''Received,.., and the matter of the 4ft. drainage reserve from Railway lru;1e be investigated. Seconded by Alderman Pawley, and carried.

Letter from the Redfern Council, intimating that it would be prepared to consider an extension of the existing Contract ~or the incineration o~ garbage for a further seven years at some future ~ate , provided the rate for incineration is at once reduced to 8/- per ton. Alderman Bu er moved that the letter be "Received", and the ?.hole matter be referred back to th& ""Committee o~ the Whole- Couneil'~'- for further consideration. Seconded by Alderman Go<ldard; , Amendment moved by Alderman Ryan, that the letter be "Received", and the Redfern Council be requested, (without prejudice), to extend the Contract for a period of not less than five years, provided the rate for incineration is at once reduced to 8/- per ton., Seconded by Alderman Roberts.

The voting being in :favour of the .Amendment, it was then submitted as the substantive motion, and declaxed carried.

Alderman Bugler requested that his vote in the negative be recorded.

Letter from the Young Council, asking co-operation in a request to the Minister ~or Labour & Industry, that any person receiving Wages on Relief Works shall be eligible for Food Relief immediately such work is terminated, and not have to wait the stipulated fortnight, as at present. Alderman Solomon moved that the letter be "Received", and co-operation, as desired, be granted. Seconded by Alderman Delve, and carried.

Letter. from the Secretary o~ the Boa,rd of Fir.e Commissioners of N .s.w., intimating that the Board will bear in mind the existing financial. difficulties of Municipal C ouneils and other contributing bodies, when consider~ng the Estimates far the ensuing year. ' "Received". ·

Letter from Alderman ~. Simpson, asking ~or the use of the Town Hall at Charity Rates ~ the ~t. Pet~rs' Bra~ch of the A.L.P., for the purpose of holding a Euchre Party & Dan~e in a1d of Mr. G. Letter :from the Liverpool Council, asking co-operation in protesting against the recent action of the Members of' -the Federal Parliament in increasing their own Salaries by £75 per annum. Ald. Pawley moved th~t the letter be 'tReceived", and co-operation, as desired, be granteQ. Seconded by Alderman Bugler.

Amendment moved by 'Al.derman Roberts, that the letter be "Received" only. Seconded by Alderman Dunshea.

The voting being in favour of' the Amendment, it was then submitted as the substantive motion, and declared carried •

Board be again requested to discontinue the practice of l~ing the: water-pipes in the gutters in this area :for weeks, as this prevents the proper cleansing of the gutters, - poliutes the interior o~ the pipes, and is a serious danger., through ~he Children rolling the pipes on to the Carriageway, to the danger of vehicular tr~~ic, and that the Board be asked not to deliver these Water­Pipes until they are required tq be laid. 11 Seconded by Alderman Dunshea, and carried.

Alderman Solomon asked if :Mr. Michael ~ard was still employed by this Couneil, and on what date did his 'present duties commence.? His Worship the Mayor intimated that Mr. Ward was still in the Council's employ, but he could not say ""O~~-hand" when his duties commenc ed.

The Mayor then welc omed to the COQneil Meeting the Mayor o~ Leichhardt,(Alderman Stuart) and said h e had had the pleasure o~ attending a recent Meeting ar the Leichhard t C oune and His 'Worship the Mayor o~ Leichhardt had now very kindly paid the Newtown Council a visit in return. Upon resuming Counc'il, it was reported that while in "Committee of the Whole", various matters relative to the Gladstone Street Municipal Depot h ad been carefUlly and tully considered, and your Comm1t~ee' now recommends tha t this Council views with grave concern the thefts of Council's :property from the Gladstone Street Depot, which have occurred' from time to time, · and fUrther recommends that the ' Police be re quested to keep vigilant watch over this Council's Gladstone St., Depot, with a view to :prevent­ing any recurrence of such thefts.

Alderman Roberts moved that the report of the "Committee of the Whole Council", be "'Received't, and adopted, and its recommendation be carried into ef'feot. Seconded by Alderman Fleming, and carried. '

His Worship the Mayor as Chairman of the works ' Committee, submitted a Report of a Meeting held on the 20th inst., as eontained on folio 330 of the Works' Committee 's Report Book, and embodying recommen~ations Nos.l , t o 8 inclusive. Ald. Ryan moved that the Report be "Received", and adopted, an~ its recommendations be carried into effect. Alderman Solomon in seconding the motion, stressed the importance and value of the work now reported a s completed i~ the widening of Missenden Road,from King street to Carillon Avemue , aiid it ~was unanimously Resolved that this Council pla~es on record its c omplete apprpval of the satisfactory and economical manner in Which the widening of Missenden ~oad, between King st., and Carillon Av., has been carried out, under the supervision of the Mayors of the Mu.nicipaJ.ity since Alderman Solomon's term in the year 1929, and continuing through the Mayoralty of Aldermen Goddard, Bugler, and Roberts, and completed <luring the current year during the Mayoralty of Alderman F.A.
