Melanie Close – Disability Equality North West (DENW)With great sadness Mel informed those present of the death of Lesley Finley, DENW’s Chairperson, Friend and Supporter for over 15 years.Lesley began volunteering for Disability Equality NW (formerly Preston Disc) in 1999, as a volunteer advisor. During that time she helped and supported many disabled people to complete benefit forms, access information and learn more about their rights. In more recent years, Lesley came back to Disability Equality as a Trustee, she had so many useful skills and so much knowledge to share that we were delighted to have her back. She moved on to become Company Secretary, Vice Chair and then Chair – this gave her the opportunity to actively campaign for disabled people’s rights, to attend strategic meetings influencing local policies and services.Internally she supported the staff, volunteers and other trustees, she questioned everything, left no stone unturned and lead us with determination, sensitivity and with a great passion for Human Rights and the Social Model of Disability. The lives of many people are better for knowing Lesley and she will be missed so much.

The Chair closed the meeting, thanked the members and guests for attending and invited members and guests to enjoy a supper, courtesy of Intact Community Cafe, and networking.
