400th Career WinThis past basketball season, Texas City High School head boys’ basketball coach, Chris Mason, won his 400th career game as a coach. Congratulations on this accomplishment.

Duck Derby Poster WinnerPaige Adams from Blocker Middle School won the 2018 Duck Derby Poster Contest. She received a $50 Walmart gift card from the TCISD Foundation for the Future. Paige's poster was printed to use in promoting the 11th Annual TCISD Youthfest and Duck Derby, which took place on April 14. Her art teacher is Aisling Jones.

LMHS UIL Academic MathLa Marque High School students competed in the UIL Academic Meet where senior Andrea Hernandez earned a medal for placing 6th overall in the Mathematics competition. Her math teacher is Raef Byers.

Triple- Impact CompetitorTexas City High School senior, Zach Smith, was awarded the Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship from the Positive Coaching Alliance-Houston Chapter at the PCA Banquet this semester. A Triple-Impact Competitor® is an athlete who works to improve oneself, teammates and the game as a whole. Zach was among 20 students in the Houston area to be awarded this scholarship. Zach has been accepted to Texas A&M and will be pursuing a degree in engineering.

TCISD Electrical Wiring SkillsUSATCISD Industrial Trades Center Electrical students participated in the SkillsUSA District competition at San Jacinto College Central in Pasadena. Seth Elliott competed in Electrical Wiring Skills and won 1st Place in Construction Electrical Wiring qualifying him to compete at State where he ranked in to top 13 in State in electrical skills. His teacher is Steven McGinley.

TCHS Golfer at Regional TournamentTexas City High School sophomore Nate Brooks qualified for the Region 3 Golf Championships based on his scores from the District Tournament where he shot an 86 and 83 at Battleground Golf Course. His golf coach is Mark Cooper.

TCHS Powerlifting RegionalsCongratulations to the Stings' Beau Ramos for placing 3rd at the Boys Division 1 Powerlifting Regional Meet in March. The powerlifting head coach is James Shepherd.

LMHS Cosmetology SkillsUSAAt the District SkillsUSA competition held at San Jacinto College Central in February, La Marque High School sophomore Kimberlyn Flores placed 1st and qualified for State. Junior Jayla Wilson placed 2nd in Cosmetology I. At State, Kimberlyn earned an Excellence Red Ribbon in cosmetology on her first trip to State SkillsUSA Their teacher is Jamillah Vallare.

TCHS 21st Century AwardsThe 21st Century program at Texas City High School committed to many community service projects this school year throughout the county. One student, Sandra Gonzales, is received recognition because she has 118 days of attendance in the 21st Century program.Another is receiving recognition for dedicating more than 25 hours of service work to the community.Suzanne Broussard is the coordinator on campus.

LMHS Robotics SkillsUSALa Marque High School competed for the first time in robotics at the SkillsUSA District contest in February, and freshman Sundos Nofal qualified for State. At State in April, she won a 1st Place Superior ribbon for her Photo Panel-STEM. Freshman Braelyn Crawford took on a field of ten contestants in extemporaneous speech, a contest that asks students to take an envelope with a topic inside into a preparation room for five minutes. Then they must deliver a three to 5- minute speech to the judges. With no previous experience in the style of competition, he brought home bronze, missing the opportunity to state by only one place. Their teacher is Christopher Cabana.

LMHS Architecture and Design SkillsUSAIn February, Trae Laws and Rynne Johnson competed in the SkillsUSA District 9 Architectural and Design Competition for La Marque High School. They had 3 hours to complete a computer model and various drawings of a fictional house that they only learned about once given their packet at the competition. Our LMHS

students swept the skills competition with Trae Laws taking 1st place in District and Rynne Johnson taking 2nd place. Both advanced to the SkillsUSA State Competition in Corpus Christi in April where they competed against students from all over the state. Their teacher is Rachel Toney.

Duke University Talent Identification ProgramSeveral Blocker Middle School students were eligible to participate in the Duke University TIP talent search. Students take ACT or SAT tests during the 7th grade. Three Blocker Middle School students scored high enough to qualify for Duke TIP’s educational program opportunities.

Mariachi at StateMariachi Raya was established 8 years ago at Texas City High School. They received a Superior rating at the Region 17 annual UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest to qualify them for UIL State Mariachi Contest. For three years now, Mariachi Raya has seen success and growth year after year. At their third appearance at UIL State, they received a Distinguished Performance rating. Benjamin Guillotte leads Mariachi. Matthew Raines is the Director of Bands.

Indoor Percussion at StateThe TCHS Indoor Percussion Unit placed 4th in state with a score of 84.225. They excelled throughout their season scoring higher and higher with each competition. Benjamin Guillotte, Assistant Band Director, is the Percussion Coordinator. TCHS alumnus Jared Angel is the percussion tech; Joven Whidbee is the program

coordinator, and Matthew Raines is the Director of Bands.

TCHS Band UIL Solo & Ensemble CompetitionTexas City High School Band members competed at UIL Solo & Ensemble competition in February where 4 students earned the highest ratings possible. Solo and Ensemble is an evaluation process where each student prepares a solo for two months. Students perform face to face to a judge alongside a pianist that is accompanying their solo. Students are then evaluated and given a rating from 1-5 with 1 being the best. Their directors are Matthew Raines and Benjamin Guillotte.

TCHS Culinary Chopped ChallengeThe Texas City High School Culinary Arts students competed this semester at the LeNotre Culinary Institute's Chopped Challenge. This is the first year for TCHS to

compete at this competition. Culinary Arts took 2 teams of four students. Our first-year students were competing against other teams who have been competing for 1 to 3 years. The students had extremely hard ingredients to work with, but they excelled and earned 3rd Place. The culinaryarts teacher is Leslie Grantham.

LMHS Band UIL Solo & EnsembleSeven La Marque High School Band members received Superior and Excellent ratings at UIL Solo & Ensemble competition in February. Solo and Ensemble is an evaluation process where each student prepares a solo that is selected for each of them to learn back in December. With two months to prepare, each student is faced with various challenges along the way, along with other requirements throughout the program. Students perform face to face to a judge alongside a pianist that is accompanying their solo. Students are then evaluated and given a rating from 1-5, 1 being the best. The Head Band Director Daniel Quintana. Andy Hedrick and Dan Wesson are assistant band directors.

First Tee Champions ChallengeMore than 400 elementary students in the Houston area competed in the Annual First Tee Champions Challenge competition held in conjunction with the Houston Open. Each year 4th Grade students are chosen for their sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation and good conduct to represent Texas City in the competition. PE coach sponsors are Cassidy Mitchell, Melissa Morris, Jacob Hon and Jodi Thompson, Ryan Welch and Dale Rogers. The Kohfeldt students were on the 3rd Place team for the challenge.

TCHS Architectural and Design SkillsUSACongratulations to Texas City High School architectural design students for their success at SkillsUSA District and State competitions this spring. The students won 1st Place - Architectural Modeling - Architectural Group Chapter Project and Best of Show - Architecture. At State, they won multiple Superior ribbons for their Texas City Dike contour model. The model is an accurate depiction of the 5-mile long Dike. The Texas City Museum has offered to include the model in its archives for future generations. Their teacher is Jeffrey Bradley.

LMHS HLS&R Art WinnersThree La Marque High School students had their artwork selected to advance to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Art Contest at NRG earlier this semester. There were awarded certificates and ribbons for their success in advancing to judging. Their art teacher is Joan Finn.

LMHS VASE CompetitionLa Marque High School art students participated in VASE, the Visual Arts Scholastic Event, in March at Dobie High School in Pasadena. In their first VASE art competition, all 13 LMHS art students scored the highest score possible on their work and interview and were awarded medals. Students were interviewed, and their work was scored from lowest (1) to highest (4). Every La Marque student received the highest rating of 4 for their work. This was the first time any of the students had competed at a VASE event. Their art teacher is Joan Finn.

Guajardo Elementary Science Fair

Guajardo Elementary students participated in the campus' science fair. Students had to follow the scientific method to complete their individual projects at home. Students

then met with local scientists and business people who judged each project. Students had to be able to articulate the outcomes of their project and answer any questions the judges may have had. Corey Coufal and Jennifer McCarty took the lead on the Guajardo Science Fair Committee.

Kohfeldt Elementary Science FairThe Kohfeldt Elementary School Science Fair is a competition where students in grades K-4 present their science project results in the form of a report, display board, and/or models that they have created. The main motive of a science fair is for students to answer a question or task, not from a textbook, but found out themselves by conducting a range of experiments and ongoing research. TCHS Future Problem Solvers at StateTexas City High School students have proven they can solve problems. Three teams and two alternates qualified to compete in the Future Problem Solving State Bowl in San Marcos on April 13-15. Soundsations Grand Champion Show ChoirThe Texas City High School Soundsations competed in two major invitationals this season. They performed at the North Texas Invitational Show Choir competition along with 7 other High School show choirs from the Dallas/ Ft Worth area. Soundsations took 3rd Place, and senior Marissa Angel was awarded best female Vocal Soloist for the High School division. At the Lone Star Show Choir Invitational, the longest running/seasoned Show Choir competition in the State of Texas, the Soundsations were named Grand Champions (1st Place) and also received caption awards for Best Vocals and Best Choreography. Texas City Arts FestivalThe Texas City Cultural Arts Foundation annually holds an Arts Festival that includes a Student Art Show. Two TCHS students were recognized for their artwork at the event.
