are interested in volunteering to help on this day. Also if you have any extra travel-size or hotel-size shampoos, please bring them to the next meeting or drop them off at the Center prior to 11/11. We will be making care packages for our troops.

Lauren Schneider went over some of the items at George’s Café. North Central Area Guild - Barbara Benson, Area Chairman Alla Gitana Chapter: Marsha Corzine, Chairman Alla Gitana kicked off the season with lunch at the Tustin Grille in Old Town Tustin. The restaurant offered an excellent menu and provided wonderful service. They welcomed some new members and are anticipating gaining some more. They have invited members of Arturo Toscanini to consider joining them and were delighted that one member showed up all by herself. They will invite them for lunch in October and hopefully they’ll have fun since it’s a Halloween luncheon complete with costumes and a costume contest! The October 30 luncheon will be held at Da Bianca Italian Restaurant in Orange.

They look forward to their members attending the Guilds birthday celebration at the Argyros Plaza in October.

Arthur Fiedler Chapter: Doris Muschek, Chairman Arthur Fiedler Chapter had its annual Membership supper and bridge at the home of Barbara Benson on August 26. Their membership has stayed steady, and they have 4 1/2 tables of Duplicate Bridge on the 4th Sunday of the month, and 7 Tables of bridge at their 1st Wednesday daytime bridge, which meets at Mimi's in Yorba Linda. Crescendo Chapter: Margie Lightfoot, Chairman

The first program of the year for Crescendo Chapter was on September 13 at the Bowers Museum’s Norma Kershaw Auditorium. Davis Gaines did a wonderful program, singing some of his favorite songs and telling stories of his career. He had a wonderful pianist accompanist and a special treat: a tap dancer who danced to one of his songs.

On November 8, Marla Jo Fisher, The Register Columnist, will entertain everyone with her talk, “How to Fail Upward and Succeed by Ignoring all the Good Advice.” She writes an amusing column and the Chapter members look forward to hearing her. Tickets are available by calling Mary Staton, 714-544-5549.

At this time Crescendo has 156 members with 25 new members. They welcome those who are dual members Huntington Harbor Area Guild - Carol Kirkwood Flying Dutchman Chapter: Dorothy & Boris Ralphs, Co-Chairmen Flying Dutchman Chapter held its annual fundraiser on September 8. The theme was from the play and film “Grease” which was popular for decorations and dressing as the characters. More than 60 members and guests attended. They will hold the Membership Luncheon October 4 at Shady Canyon where the scholarship students will speak. Laguna Area Guild - BJ Van Alstine Debussy Chapter: Millie Robbins, Chairman After sadly losing three members last year, this will be a year of change and trying new things. They voted on a $100 assessment in order to make their Guilds’ obligation. Only 2 did not renew – one a dual member. They are trying “the fun lunch theory” and lastly they are having their Holiday Luncheon on Nov.1 to beat the crowd. Like the “Little Engine” they are small, but they think they can do it. From the Wings Chapter: Gail Berra, Chairman From the Wings kicked off their year with a Board Meeting on September 18 and then went on to California Pizza Kitchen for dinner. They had about 25 members and a guest join them. This is one of their mini fund raisers. On October 17, 2018 they are going to the California Science Center to see the King Tut exhibit. They will be going by bus and expect to sell out. Mozart Chapter: Barbara Biniasz-Gladden, Chairman Mozart Chapter has been quiet over the summer, except for bridge. On August 8, members enjoyed a trip to Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. Members gathered at the beautiful home of their Co-Chairman, Veneta, for a brunch stop before heading to the races. It was a HOT summer day, but Del Mar had a cool breeze throughout the afternoon and some members came home WINNERS. Their first meeting/luncheon was on September 12 at the Golden Dragon Chinese Restaurant with 17 members attending, including 3 new members and one returning member. The 6

restaurant is one of three of the oldest establishments on Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa. This meeting/luncheon was arranged by a member who has a special connection to the restaurant, so everyone had a great lunch and meeting in a private dining room before the restaurant opened for business hours. Camelot welcomed Guilds’ Chairman Mary Shebell and Merle McCormick as new members! He described just a few of the many education programs the Center offers and announced some of the upcoming productions that will take the stage this season. Guilds Chairman, Mary Shebell, spoke on the 40th Anniversary celebration on Oct 27 and The Guilds fundraiser on March 16. Their next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 16 with lunch at Rancho Capistrano Winery in San Juan Capistrano at 11:30. Following the luncheon, they will have a docent-led tour of Los Rios Historic District. Please save the date of April 6, 2019, for their eighth annual fashion show and luncheon at Fashion Island Hotel in Newport Beach. Irving Berlin Chapter: Joanne Gates, Chairman With the new Guilds Board, many things are happening. They will keep their membership apprised as they are received. They were fortunate to have Anne Marie Eckman, the South County Area Guild Chairman, attend their meeting. Consistent support from the Chapters has been so important to the Center’s success including education programs and increased enrollment in the School of Dance and Music for Children with Disabilities. The Segerstrom Center for the Arts continues to transform lives. More than 5000 military families have been impacted by the Center’s programs. CHOC has had the Center’s teaching artists visit patients and deliver a variety of arts experiences to the youngsters. Alzheimer’s Orange County in partnership with the Center brings music and movement to early Alzheimer’s patients and their family. West County Area Guild - Carol Strauss Carmen Chapter: Eileen Cirillo & Susan Kinkade, Co– Chairmen Carmen Chapter has started the new season with great activity. They had a wonderful trip to the California Science Center at USC on Sept. 6 to see the King Tut exhibit. Twenty-seven of their members attended including guests. They did quite well and made $1,087.90. They thank Martha Herrero and her son, Sammy, for donating the bus. Their October meeting will be held on October 3 at Loretta Freund’s home. Loretta is the hostess with the mostest. The event will also be a Halloween Party, and prizes will be given for the best and most original costumes. Our Wednesday, Nov. 7, meeting will be a visit to the UCI gallery to view the long-hidden stash of 3,200 paintings. This is a gift bequeathed to UCI by Orange County developer, Gerald Buck. Center Stage Chapter: Margaret Ann Vincent, Chairman Center Stage celebrated the delightful days of summer with a “fun” raiser at the Surf and Sand in August. On Sunday, Sept. 23, they met at a member’s home with many tasty food items provided by their members, followed by a “Bingo” game. Some of their guests had not played for many years. Everyone had a great time and several prizes were given out. Fall is quickly coming, and they are going to celebrate Oktoberfest on Sunday, Oct. 14 with a brunch at the famous Phoenix Club. They encourage guests to dress in their lederhosen or German-style dresses and can even bring a German beer stein and indulge in the Club’s beer. Stage Door Chapter: Gail Daniels, Chairman Stage Door Chapter had a wonderful membership event on September 9 at Zov’s restaurant in Newport Coast. They were honored to have Center Board President Terry Dwyer as their speaker. All attendees enjoyed hearing about all the programs that the Center has to offer and an explanation of where our fundraising dollars go. All also enjoyed partaking of delicious appetizers and wine! On Friday, October 5, Stage Door members will enjoy dinner at the Rusty Pelican in Newport Beach, followed by attending an Agatha Christie play, The Hollow, at the Newport Theater, a venue they recently discovered. 8

The Circuit Editor & e-Circuit: Louise Costa Circuit articles and pictures are due on Monday October 1. As of Wednesday September 26, she has received this information from 7 chapters (Crescendo, Arthur Fiedler, Flying Dutchman, Cabaret, Carmen, Center Stage & Stage Door) with 12 more chapter reports to go.

It takes about 3 weeks or so for proofing and printing of The Circuit. It takes approximately another week for the mailing. You should receive the fall 2018 edition in early November.

The next Circuit due dates are January 26, 2019 and May 20, 2019.

The inaugural edition of The Guilds E-Newsletter “E-Circuit” was emailed to each of the chapter officers on September 24, 2018. Future editions will be emailed to the entire Guilds membership after we receive all the email addresses with the Membership Reports. The newsletter will not be distributed on a set timeline but sent out when there is a need to disseminate pertinent information. Louise will not be mailing this out to people who do not have emails. That will be up to each chapter to handle as they do other similar information.

Informally Yours Chairman: Heather Gokhman No report. Program Chairman: Millie Robbins Millie hopes that many of us have noticed that the Program Book is now on our new and improved website and she hopes that many are taking advantage of it. She will be taking additions in the next few months but right now she would like to ask every Chairman to check with their Program person for any out-of-date phone numbers or other problems they have run into. She will remove all wrong listings to keep our book up to date. She needs each Chapter’s help with this. Millie thanks Louise Costa for all her time and hard work she put into this project. Spooner Scholarship Chairman: Audrey Kieckhefer The Orange County Foundation has changed the rules so that our scholarship can continue. It should be given out in late spring or summer. Children at the Center Chairman: Eileen Cirillo CHILDREN AT THE CENTER will be expanding its involvement with Segerstrom Center to include many more activities, performances and programs presented by the Education Department. Originally the purpose of CHILDREN AT THE CENTER was to assist with the Bus-Ins for the On Stage at the Center Programs. While many members of The Guilds volunteered for Bus-Ins over the years, the Center would like to find ways to engage more of our members that may not be able or available to volunteer in this way. Therefore, the Center and the Education Department have restructured and expanded the opportunities for The Guilds members to engage with the Education Programs. Here are some of the opportunities that Guilds members will have during the school year to engage with the Education Department in programs for children and the community at large. 10

1 – Guilds Members will be able to attend the On Stage at the Center performances without having to assist the children since this will be done by ushers. Individual Chapters can reserve up to 10 seats for a specific performance and will be able to enjoy seeing the children experience a live performance. 2 – Guilds Members will be invited to join in the Disney Share Celebration in March when the FOUR schools in this year’s Disney Musicals in Schools program come to the Center for their grand finale performance. 3 – Guilds Members will be invited to participate in the ArtsTeach Showcase in May when all the teaching artists on the Center roster gather at the Center to perform and engage with parents and teachers from schools throughout Orange County. 4 – Guilds Members will be invited to attend any of the Community Engagement Programs on the Argyros Plaza with some opportunities to assist and engage with the public attending these events. Eileen has attached the 2018-2019 schedule of On Stage at the Center performances. If your chapter is interested in attending one of these shows, please contact her with your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice of dates. Remember there is a limit of 10 chapter members per performance. Parking will be your responsibility – NO VALIDATIONS. Specific information on the other items listed above will be given at future Guilds Board meetings or by email as the dates are announced. Eilene thanked everyone for all their support and help.

12 Historian: Sherry Astrella No report. Toy Drive Chairman: Lynn Jones and Cathryn Friis The Guild's wonderful Toys for Tots for this year will have Cathryn Friis and Lynn Jones as Co- Chairman. Last year's Toys for Tots chairman, Linda Miller, was very gracious to already have called the Marines for our pick-up dates. They are all set so all the wonderful toys will be given out. In October the flyers will go out to the Chapter Chairman with all the information for this year. In-Store Coordinators: Bonnie Wheeler & Loretta Freund Loretta reported that they are working with Tory Burch for a date in February. They are waiting for corporate approval. Hope to have appetizers, drinks and informal modeling. 40th Anniversary Committee: Gail Daniels & Mary Shebell, Co-Chairs Mary passed out a small bag of cookies with the information for the 40th Anniversary party attached. All chapters are invited to attend, and this includes families and guests. There will be entertainment and a 40th Anniversary champagne toast by Terry Dwyer for those over 21. A wristband will identify those over 21. Mary commented that she has no idea on the numbers that will attend. She will ask Chapter Chairman to try to find out numbers from each chapter. Mary passed out a sign-up sheet for volunteers to help that day. The Docents will also be on The Plaza that day to give abbreviated tours. Unfinished Business: Gail Daniels reported that the storage unit has been cleaned out. It was decided to keep the current unit due to price and location. There is now room for more items. Gail shared some things she cleaned out and many items were taken by chapters. New Business: Mary brought up the issue of Chapter Reports – do we want them read at our meetings, or just included in the minutes. Millie suggested that eliminating them would move the meeting along. We could possibly read them every other time, or alternate Area Guilds. Mary would like to bring in more speakers from the Center as there is much to learn. Mary asked for ideas to be emailed to her. There will be a Gala planning meeting on October 12 from 10 to 12 in the Center Room at Segerstrom Hall. At this time Loretta Freund mentioned the categories of items needed for the silent auction: dining and entertainment, home and décor, ladies, children, sports, wine and “staycations” (hotels or homes). Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 11:47 a.m. Respectfully Submitted, Judy Kelley, Recording Secretary Next Meeting: Thursday –October 25, 2018 at 10:00 a.m., National University, Room 201
