Treasurer’s Report Fall Board Meeting 11/2/14 Citizens Checking $12,086.63 Morgan Stanley Money Market $28,792.72 Morgan Stanley Investments Stocks $2,340 Mutual Funds $9,211.33 Corporate Fixed Income $21,680.66 Accrued Interest $144.33 Total Morgan Stanley $62,168.99 Total GIML Liquid Assets $40,879.35 Total GIML Assets $74,255.62

• $2830 of “Liquid Assets” is Carol Gordon Scholarship funds. Accountant and financial advisor recommend we isolate this money in a savings acct at Citizens so we can show more specifically when funds are used.

• I would also recommend that we do another pitch for CG fund on FB and website

as an end of the year donation.

• Michigan is still having some issues with the treasurer situation (not sure it’s the treasurer’s fault); her name was never added to checking acct so she couldn’t access info needed to finish report. Everybody’s got something but this seems a legitimate excuse. Just an FYI to presidents to make sure that the money info is available to your treasurers in a timely manner. I have a reconciled report but we will need to file an extension for taxes.

APPENDIX B To: GIML Executive Board From: Michael E. Martin, Development Chair Re: DEVELOPMENT CHAIR REPORT October 25, 2014 CONFERENCE With the help of many persons, plans for the 5th International Conference on Music Learning Theory, “Audiation from the Inside Out,” are well under way. Call for session proposals and research poster sessions will be going out shortly. Contracts from the hotel are being reviewed and budget for the conference needs to be developed. Brochure with conference details will be sent out during the winter. Thanks to Heather Kirby, Jen McDonel, Rich Victor, Sue Waters, Terry Bacon, David Stringham, Alden Snell, Butch Marshall, Jen Bailey, and Donna Schwartz for many valuable ideas and help with the details. GIML Board Breakfast Wednesday morning 7:15-9:00 in the Barclay Room Commission Chairs are encouraged to meet with your commission members (if they are in attendance) during one of the “on your own” lunch or breakfast times during the conference. We are considering offering an optional tour of GIA on Friday morning after the conference for anyone who is staying and can carpool. We would leave the Carleton at 9:30 AM and arrive at GIA at 10 AM. Rich Victor is putting together a to-do list with timetable that should be a big help to the next conference chairperson. Thanks, Rich! OTHER DEVELOPMENT ITEMS Alec Harris recommended we continue to target the following states: NY, PA, MI, OH, TX, and FL. The board should consider booths and receptions in these states. Let Alec Harris know. Faculty will be encouraged to flood these states with proposals, particularly Texas, which has a huge conference and very little MLT. In recent months, the Development Commission was asked to consider the following:

• What is GIML doing well? (Conferences and Professional Development Levels)

• What can GIML improve? (See below.)

Page 6: MINUTES(OF(THE(FALL(2014(MEETING…€¦ · 02.11.2014  · Fall Executive Board Meeting Sunday, November 2, 2014 Members: Heather Kirby, chair, Olivia DeJesus, Christina Hornbach,

• How can we encourage and help existing chapters and new chapters? • How can we maintain memberships of those who take Professional

Development Levels? (Many feel isolated. Need follow-up contact.) • Is it possible for those completing professional development levels to be

assigned a mentor who would keep in touch? Suggestions for board consideration: (Thanks to Commission member Donna Schwartz for many of these ideas.)

• Find a way to offer professional development online via pre-recorded video classes that address teaching methods. This will help new members, as well as current members who want to brush up and can't attend the 2-week courses.

• Live online workshops (webinars via Google hangouts - that can be recorded and saved as private videos) offered nationally could also benefit members and bring in some money to the organization for more outreach.

• Mentors are a GREAT idea. Perhaps each chapter can elect someone to be in charge of a mentoring program that can follow up on Professional Development Level participants, offer refreshers, webinars, and/or set up a “reunion” for the participants.

Requested board action:

• Consider booths and/or receptions at state conferences of NY, PA, OH, MI, TX, FL.s

• Form a committee with the technical know-how to explore what kind of online video classes and webinars GIML could offer.

• Direct each chapter to appoint a committee of mentors who would follow-up on those having completed a Professional Development Level. Also encourage faculty to follow-up on their own participants.

Thank you for your attention to this report. Please feel free to send me your input at any time. Respectfully submitted, Michael E. Martin, Development Chair

GIML Education Commission Report Fall Executive Board Meeting

Sunday, November 2, 2014

Members: Heather Kirby, chair, Olivia DeJesus, Christina Hornbach, David Stringham, Cynthia Taggart

I. 2014 Professional Development Levels Courses A. MSU: ECM-1: EC1- 30 participants, turned several away (too late to hire

additional faculty), very successful, generating about $10,500 for GIML B. UB: EGM-1, Instrumental, Piano, ECM-1- over 50 participants C. BW: ECM-1, Instrumental, 13 instrumental, 15 ECM participants terrific! D. RIC: EGM-1, Instrumental, 8 instrumental, 13 GM, high level of musicianship

and prior understanding, keeps getting better! II. Proposed 2015 Sites-Completed site plan proposals due October 31

A. MSU: EGM1 & Inst 1, June 15-26 with Cindy, Michael and Christina B. BW: ECM1, July 20-31 with Butch and Jen B. C. UB: Inst 2, EGM2, maybe EGM1, July 6-17 with tba D. BSU (Bridgewater State University, MA): ECM1, July 6-17 with tba E. EMU: ECM1, maybe Piano, July 6-17 with tba F. UDel: tba

III. Internships

A. Welcome to our new faculty members: Jenny Fisher- Piano, Terry Bacon- Instrumental, Holley Haynes- Early Childhood

B. No new nominations for 2015 Discussion: there doesn’t seem to be a need for more faculty members at this point with nearly half not working in summer PDLs.

C. New intern process is going well, still updating video requirements to release for this coming summer.

IV. Carol Gordon Scholarship

A. One scholarship this past summer granted at RIC B. Goal for next summer is one professor for each tract, subject to limitation

based on availability/enrollment for PDLs C. Form will be sent out through GIML Website, faculty to send out, Mountain

Lake, Instrumental Conference, Ed Asmus

V. Faculty A. Evaluation of faculty teaching PDLs

1. The purpose is to provide faculty members and site managers with information on student impressions of instructors.

2. We are updating the current form to provide fair, uniform, anonymous, online evaluation.

APPENDIX C
Page 8: MINUTES(OF(THE(FALL(2014(MEETING…€¦ · 02.11.2014  · Fall Executive Board Meeting Sunday, November 2, 2014 Members: Heather Kirby, chair, Olivia DeJesus, Christina Hornbach,

3. Using this evaluation does not preclude faculty from administering their own course evaluation asking participants to reflect on what they're learning, how they'll apply it, etc.

B. Faculty roster update

Faculty members seeking to round out their certification within their specialization may do so by completing a half-internship within a PDL in which they are teaching, or at another site should they not be teaching. Continued mentorship of newer faculty members is encouraged.

C. Defining Faculty role Many exciting initiatives were explored at the Faculty Retreat at the last GIML Conference, however, some of them seem to be more fitting for other commissions to pursue. It was decided that the focus of the faculty would remain PDL course development, and faculty certification. To this end, suggestions for states to target for supporting MLT growth based on information from Alec were sent to Development Commission.

D. 2nd Biennial Faculty Retreat will be at GIML Conference, Tuesday, August 4, 2015, 9:00 am- 12:00 pm

E. Course Description updates still in the works F. I’m looking to initiate a regular teleconference to support newer faculty

members. Please let me know if you are interested.

G. Other 1. Jill Reese may be going on sabbatical this coming Spring and

in need of some one to teach Elementary Methods, and perhaps another course if that would ‘sweeten the deal’ at SUNY Fredonia. If you are interested, or know someone who is, contact Jill ([email protected])

2. We are putting together a list of session topics, descriptions and presenters. Alec is sometimes asked for suggestions for state conference sessions; he’d like to have a list. We decided it would be beneficial to put this list on the GIML website for those interested in hosting workshops to have a bank from which to choose. Send information to Heather K. ([email protected]). Alec says he will post list on GIA website as well.

Respectfully submitted, Heather Kirby

APPENDIX D

GIML Board Meeting Report Commission: Publications Board Member: Beth Etopio Date of meeting: November 2, 2014 Action Items Completed:

• ERIC is undergoing a transitional phase (August 2013 – 2014) where they are only accepting research journals. At this time, ERIC is not a viable database for Audea.

Action Items In-progress/Pending:

• Committee members asked again to edit Wikipedia content regarding Music Learning Theory. To date, none have responded.

• Articles under review for next edition of Audea. Still hope to get out a 2014 edition of Audea.

• Exploring possibilities of other databases picking up Audea (i.e. EBSCO Host, RILM Abstracts).

Announcements:

• My sincere apologies for the lack of productivity of the Publications Commission. It has been an extremely difficult year for me personally and professionally. I will be more diligent to the responsibilities of the office in the upcoming year.

Questions for the board:

• Are there other databases you think may be open to Audea?

• Is there a possibility of putting together an ad hoc committee to re-visit the GIML website content and develop a plan for moving forward? Committee members might include publications commission members, faculty members, past presidents, etc.

Respectfully submitted by: Beth Etopio !

Marilyn Lowe Piano Workshop - “The workshop was wonderful.” About thirteen participants and lots of practice teaching patterns. Marilyn’s expertise was greatly appreciated especially for those participants who have been using her book. A big shout-out to Elizabeth Haymaker at UMass Amherst for planning this workshop. Renewal Notices: Members received monthly renewal reminders along with the GIML eBlast in June, July, August, September, and October. They will receive additional notices with the November and December eBlasts. Email reminders were also sent mid-month in October and another will be sent in November. Former members who have not renewed will be taken off the list after December. They will also be removed from the GIML Facebook Page membership Other Membership Issues: Membership documents were emailed October 30. Persons who have paid dues for 2014-15 receive an e-mail with a welcome letter and GIML Membership card. Any discrepancies should be directed to us. **Chapter Presidents: Forward information about chapter officer changes as they occur, so we can keep this list up to date. When officers change, the information we need is: chapter officers’ names, titles, and email addresses. Please confirm current membership with all of your chapter officers on July 1 of each year. ECMMA Booth In 2012, our GIML board approved a reciprocal agreement with ECMMA to provide free booth space at each other’s conferences to promote connections between the organizations. GIML had a very successful booth at the 2014 National ECMMA conference in Atlanta. GIML International Conference 5th Conference: On October 25, the link to the call for conference proposals form was posted on 10 Facebook pages, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Financial Issues 1. Chapter memberships have been reconciled with national and checks sent to

MA, MI, NE, NY and SC GIML chapters. 2. All debts for summer faculty have been paid for Summer 2014. 3. Workshops: process went smoothly this year.

a. Site managers should continue to use the Deposit Template for sending checks to be deposited and the Certification Personnel Excel Template for keeping track of the persons in the workshop and their contact information.

b. Site managers: submit final financial reports ASAP after workshops end, so that faculty are paid in a timely manner.

c. Detailed records of expenditures should be kept so that we can categorize them to get an accurate reflection of the total profit GIML makes on each workshop.

4. The Carol Gordon scholarship fund now has $2830.00. Respectfully Submitted by Jennifer McDonel and Richard Victor

President’s Report November 2, 2014

At our April meeting, we briefly discussed whether or not we should trademark our logo. There was insufficient information about procedure and cost and as a result the discussion was tabled. I have since researched the process and cost. Following is an explanation of each. There are several options available for federal registration of “property”: patents, trademarks, and copyright. Trademarks are business-oriented and protect brand names, slogans, and logos. A trademark can be any word, letter, number, design, or a combination of those. This would be the most appropriate choice for the needs of our organization. The trademark means that our logo is registered at the federal level, valid internationally, and we could use the registered "R in the circle" symbol in our logo. The advantages of a registered trademark include:

1. Nationwide Protection. We have exclusive rights to use our mark (what we “register”). If another organization or person tries to register a replica or similar mark, their mark will be refused registration.

2. Exclusive Right. Unauthorized use of our mark by another organization/person allows us to go as far as to sue that organization/person in federal court.

3. International Protection. We can use the trademark registration as a basis for registering in a foreign country.

Procedure for registering a trademark: The first step is to conduct a “trademark clearance search.” That involves searching in a few places for use of marks that are similar to ours and with goods and services that are related to ours (most likely Class 41 - Education; providing of training; http://www.wellsiplaw.com/what-are-trademark-classes/). The database is available on the United States Trademark and Patent Office’s website USPTO.GOV. We can search it for free using the Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS). We would also need to search state trademark databases and also business name databases as well as a general internet search. USPTO recommends using a trademark lawyer for this if needed. The USPTO supports a Law School Clinic program through which law students, working under the guidance of a qualified faculty member, can assist us with our application. And the USPTO has a wealth of information available to help with the application process. The next step is to identify the mark. Do we want to keep our logo as is? Once we have determined whether or not to keep current branding, we complete the electronic application. Cost of registering a trademark: The cost to register a trademark and one class is $275. I believe we would want Class 41 (education; providing of training). Most organizations register with one class. However, if we

add a class (say we want our pins and tee-shirts trademarked – International Class 25) it is another $100. Every 5 years we renew our registered trademark for $100. Additionally, after 9 years of registration, we will be required to renew our trademark registration by filing an Application for Renewal. The government filing fees associated with the Application for Renewal usually totals $500 per class of goods/services.
