President’s Message

As I write this, 2010 is nearly upon us and I am mindful of what a wonderful organiza-

tion NVMTA is. Of course, it’s the people within an organization that make it wonderful. As

we enter our 60th anniversary year I would ask each of us to reflect on the many benefits that

NVMTA has afforded us, our students and our studios. We are most fortunate, indeed, to

have so many committed people to volunteer their time as chairmen, board members, officers,

and to fill the many positions that we have within NVMTA. This is what makes NVMTA great

and allows us to continue to offer so many opportunities for our students.

My wish for you in 2010 is a year filled with continued dedication to our craft and our

students, and every success with educating young people in music. It’s an important job, in-

deed, and one which I am so happy to be doing. We should all be proud to be part of an or-

ganization as outstanding as NVMTA.

Happy New Year!

Sonata Festival News

Sonata Festival takes place on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at George Mason University and we welcome you to participate. Please note, that our requirements have changed

slightly since last year.

As in the past, students should prepare movements in two contrasting moods or tempi

(i.e., one slow, one fast). Sonata/Sonatinas may be by the same composer or by differ-ent composers. Please read the event description carefully from our NVMTA website to

avoid programming disqualifications. Example: Mvts. 2 & 3 of Beethoven’s ―Moonlight‖ Sonata would be disqualified since they have similar tempi.

In addition, this year we have a new rule: a two- movement sonata/sonatina which

has two movements in similar tempi, slow or fast, is permitted. Teachers must, however, mark this repertoire as a "two movement sonata/sonatina".

Theme and variations: Students may play a set of variations but it cannot exceed

the allotted time.

Thanks to Julie Slingerland and her family for donating $5,000 to the Sonata Festival.

Each year, this fund provides the resources to purchase the ribbons and certificates for the winners of the Honors Recital. This recital will now be named after Julie and her

late husband David.

Scholarship Endowment Fund

NVMTA’s Scholarship Endowment Fund is now

worth $70,000 ten years after its establish-

ment marked our 50th anniversary. The fund has realized earnings of $14,000 and has dis-

bursed almost $11,000 in scholarships. Spe-cial thanks to the estate of David Slingerland

for a recent large contribution, and to Anne Hurley-Cole, who presented a Benefit Recital

for the Voice Scholarship in October.

Voice Achievement Awards

The NVMTA Voice Achievement Awards will be

held on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Woman’s Club. Co-chairs Peggy McNulty and

Richard Wilmer would like to hear from all teachers who plan to participate! Email the

number of students and the division entered to [email protected]. For competi-

tion requirements please go to nvmta.org.

Armando Iannucci: Why I love Mahler The Thick of It writer and director explains how the music of Gustav Mahler, born 150 years ago, became a lifelong

passion Throughout 2010 we’ll be celebrating the music of Gustav Mahler as

never before. Mahler was born 150 years ago, on July 7, 1860. Poign-antly, he died only 51 years later, bringing to a sudden end a startling cycle of great symphonic works that journeyed from brilliant, ostenta-

tious orchestral impressions of nature and folksong, through lengthy studies of emotional turmoil and finally, under the strain of the heart condition he knew was

going to end his life still in middle age, in extraordinary last symphonies exploring the darker and more extreme reaches of what orchestral music can achieve. I first came across Mahler’s music when I was around 14 and was in the habit of prowling

through the least-used end of Glasgow Hillhead Library’s record collection to see what could shake me out of my musical torpor. To read more go to
