Mise En Scene

Page 2: Mise en scene

Shows relationships between characters i.e. if one character is smiling at another, it shows they have a positive relationship as they are getting along and we can see this as they are happy around each others company.

Example: In the film ‘’The fountain’’, in the shot above we can assume that’ the character is miserable and upset. This is because the facial expression he has shows he is unhappy as he is looking down which shows he does not want to be seen and the tears show that something has upset him.

sSettings and props are not chosen at random so that there are more objects to look at in a shot. In contrary, they are thought out carefully to add behind meaning in specific events.

Settings and props both can be used to show background and additional information about characters, events and relationships between characters.

Example for colour: In one of the scenes in the film ‘’the aviator’’ in the shots above, the director has used colour grading and specifically the colours red, white and blue slightly throughout the scene which represents the American flag which show's where the film is located.

Example: In the film ‘’the notebook’’, in the shot below, there are two characters. The way they are positioned is that they are directly positioned in the centre of the shot and the character's are very close together.

The positioning of the characters shows that the relationship between the characters is the most important thing the audience should take into consideration in this scene and the closeness of the characters shows they have a close and happy relationship as they must be comfortable with each other to be close which shows they must be happy together.
