What is Misophonia?

Miso= Hatred Phonia=Sound Aka: Selective Sound

Sensitivity Syndrome. A syndrome in which

certain stimuli provoke an aversive reaction

Stimuli may be auditory or visual

Auditory Stimuli may include:

Crunching Tapping of pens Breathing Eating noises Repetitive

actions Pen Clicking

Non-auditory stimuli: Repetitive

movements such as tapping of the hands, leg shaking, etc

Adverse Effects of Misophonia

Certain stimuli can provoke different reactions such as rage, anger, impulsiveness, annoyance, disgust, and aggression

Many who suffer from misophonia report their heart racing and beginning to sweat when there is a provoking stimulus

This can lead to a life of seclusion, avoidance, social dysfunction, and intense suffering.

What Causes Misophonia?

Misophonia is not fully understood It is believed to be caused by an abnormal

intense connection between the auditory and limbic system of the brain

People with this problem are believed to hear noises at much louder frequencies than others

Misophonia is still not in the ICD-10 system or DSM-IV, but is currently classified as a discrete psychiatric disorder.

Treatments

Currently there is no treatment for misophonia

Ways to help include: Noise reducing

earphones Cognitive behavioral

therapy Stress reducing

activities (exercise, yoga, etc)
