A Tale of Two Trucks… by Erin Heffron

On June 8th, Dean Parker surprised me with a bright red 2010 Dodge Ram Megacab… But this wasn’t just any Megacab, it was one that I had the privilege to design! For those of you who haven’t had a chance to design a truck, I suggest you give it a try by visiting dodge.com, click on “build my

own” and you will be able to add all the bells and whistles! Last October, I sat down with Dean to design my dream truck and I was overwhelmed with all the options! It was one thing to see it on paper and watch as the website virtually built my truck, but when I pulled up to Fremont Motors and saw the truck sitting in the parking lot, it almost took my breath away! This truck was loaded! From air-conditioned seats, a heated steering wheel, and a DVD player, this truck did not disappoint! I named this truck “LeRoy” and I enjoyed every mile with a smile! I was fortunate to be able to drive LeRoy for a total of 7,000 miles! I had some great memories in LeRoy including piling several state queens in the back during Cheyenne Frontier Days and showing LeRoy off during the Red Desert Round-up pre-show and parade in Rock Springs!

The Megacab is comparable to a first-class seat on an airplane. As a rodeo queen, the extra room always comes in handy! I brought LeRoy back to Fremont Motors in Rock Springs shortly after the Wyoming State Fair. Dean knew how much I loved the Megacab so he had another one waiting for me! Sitting in the parking lot was a brand new 2010 Dodge Ram Megacab! My, how I love my job!! My new truck is a light brown color so I decided to name it “Charlie Brown.” I am looking forward to making some more great memories with Charlie!

I had the chance to pull a horse trailer with both of these trucks and I am very impressed at the towing capabilities of Ram trucks! Of course this would not be possible without the incredible support of Dean Parker with Fremont Motors in Rock Springs! I cannot thank him and his team enough for taking such great care of me! Paired up with Nelson Engineering as my fuel sponsor, Fremont Motors has made this year a reality! Thank you Dean Parker and Holly Pratt for making me the coolest state queen on the road!

- Meet Br i t tany - Every girl has a dream, and on August 21, 2010 Brittany Richards’ dream came true; the jade and gold crown of Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2011 was placed upon her white cowboy hat. The dream and desire for being Miss Rodeo Wyoming has never been far from her heart. She has devoted many years to making her dream come true, and is excited to start her journey on this once in a lifetime opportunity. The Snowy Range and rolling plains of sagebrush are the setting for the life story of Brittany. She grew up in the golden prairie grass and white capped mountains, and found herself experiencing Wyoming’s true beauty through its changing landscape and history. She has clinched the ideals of this land, and lives as strong as the wind blows. She always strives to do her best and experiences life with a passion that extends to everyone she meets. Growing up in Laramie with her supporting brother, Dusty, and loving parents, Loren and Christine, Brittany’s childhood activities laid the foundation for her current hobbies. She plays the piano, hunts elk and antelope, and enjoys taking walks with her Chocolate Labrador. Brittany has been sitting in a saddle from a young age. Her grandparents are responsible for providing the

opportunity to form her love of horses by giving Brittany her first pony and saddle. She became a member of 4-H showing horses and participating in numerous gymkhanas. In high school she showed her school spirit as a cheerleader and diver at the Laramie High School. She participated in the German American Partnership Program and was able to attend a month of high school in Southern Germany along with backpacking through various European countries with her family. Brittany then went on to graduate from the University of Wyoming in May 2010 with her degree Business Administration. Brittany spends September and October every year preparing and presenting the Haunted Ghost Tours of Laramie City with the Wyoming Territorial Prison. Brittany has been serving as an intern at the Northern International Livestock Exposition in Billings, Montana for two year producing the Little Stick Horse Stampede for kids and as secretary for the American Quarter Horse Association horse events.

While Brittany travels as Miss Rodeo Wyoming, she will continue teaching children about horse safety with her T.A.C.K. program. Her program focuses on the history of the horse, the physical and mental attributes of a horse, and the proper way to act around horses at rodeos, fairs, and more importantly, at parades. Brittany feels that awareness is the best way to prevent accidents, and she is eager to expand the reach of her program to a national level.

Preparing for the duties of Miss Rodeo Wyoming, Brittany has learned the value of honesty and hard work. The encouragement from her friends and family has given her the strength to continue to work on making her dream come true. Les Brown once said, “If you take responsibility for yourself you will develop a hunger to accomplish your dreams.” Brittany has taken pride in her accomplish-ments and her growth over the years, and she is excited to help other girls accomplish their dreams while being true to who they are.

Celebrating graduation from the University of Wyoming with brother, Dusty, and parents Chris and Loren.

Keeping Up With Er in Dear Wyoming, What an incredible summer it has been!! It’s hard to encompass the excitement of an entire summer as Miss Rodeo Wyoming in a few short paragraphs, but the underlying theme is that this summer was unforgettable, incredible, amazing, fun and any other adjective that describe greatness! My last road report left off with Jackson Hole’s Old West Days, which kicked off my busy summer! I have been attending the Old West Days celebration since I first

started queening so it was quite an honor to be back again as Miss Rodeo Wyoming! I had a blast in Jackson with the hometown crowd as I went through the parade and carried the American Flag at the rodeo. During the rodeo I teamed up with Miss Teton County Fair and Rodeo, Desiree Bridges to visit fans in the stands and sign autographs. My next trip took me to the Evergreen State for the Elizabeth Stampede! I met up with Kasie Pigg, Miss Rodeo Colorado in Greeley and we drove down to Elizabeth together. During this trip both of us learned how to be expert packers because it’s hard to fit two queens in one truck! We were pleasantly surprised at the location of the rodeo arena, which was tucked in the pine trees and gave us a break from the regular rodeo smells. It was nice to sit in the middle of the arena and catch the scent of pine trees during the rodeo. But the smell wasn’t the only thing that made the Elizabeth Stampede special. The rodeo committee was exceptionally accommodating and Kasie and I enjoyed getting to know the locals during our three-day visit! The Elizabeth Stampede Committee has been voted the best small rodeo in the Mountain States Circuit the last few years. I had a few days off after the Elizabeth Stampede, which gave me the chance to pick up a brand new truck from Fremont Motors! A bright red Dodge Ram Mega cab greeted me as I pulled in the parking lot. I decided to name this one LeRoy and we headed to Thermopolis for our first trip. I judged the Little Miss Wyoming Pageant in Thermopolis with other queens from the state. We had our job cut out for us as we judged 91 girls in four different age groups! I will have to say that this was the most difficult jobs that I have had as Miss Rodeo Wyoming because all of the girls were so cute!! It was a great experience, I had fun getting to know each of the girls and I had a great time with the other judges! I drove directly from Thermopolis to North Platte Nebraska for the Miss Rodeo Nebraska Pageant and the NebraskaLAND Days Rodeo. 17 other state queens in Nebraska joined me and we enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of community members who opened their homes to us. We had the chance to tour the Bailey Railroad Yard, and Buffalo Bill’s Nebraska home. One of the many highlights of our trip was the opportunity to participate in the Miss Rodeo Nebraska Fashion Show. I was honored to carry the Wyoming flag during the show! We traveled around the town in a bus and you can imagine how entertaining that could be with 17 rodeo queens! At the end of the stay, we watched as Becky Grimm was crowned as Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2011! Nebraska is very well represented! On my way back from North Platte, I stopped in at the National Fur Trappers Convention in Rock Springs! It was quite the experience for me because it took me a while to get used to the smell of animal lures! But after a while I got used to it! I had the chance to meet the members of the Wyoming Fur Trappers Association who donated my beautiful fur vest! My next destination was the Wyoming High School Finals in Douglas where I had the privilege to judge the queen contest. I judged with two former Miss Rodeo Wyomings; Stacy Johnson-Berger, and Crystal Rivers-Myers. We had our work cut out for us because each of the six contestants did an exceptional job! At the end of the contest, Taylor Rieniets from Gillette won the title and did a fantastic job representing our state at Nationals taking home the honor of Miss Congeniality! I left Douglas and headed straight to Thermopolis for the Thermopolis PRCA Rodeo! I made great memories with the Cheyenne Frontier Days queens, Rachel Shutter and Amy Berry as well as Miss Cody Stampede, Kiley Boe. There was never a dull moment as we spent some time at the World’s Largest Mineral Hot springs! We tested out the water

slides and had competitions about who could go the fastest and make the biggest splash! The rodeo was excellent also, and I had a chance to meet Dona and Tami Vold-Larsen with Triple V Rodeo. It was an exciting start to “Cowboy Christmas” weekend. Cowboy Christmas found me in the “Rodeo Capitol of the World” in Cody for the 91st edition of the Cody Stampede. One of the Gold Tiered rodeos of the Million Dollar Tour, we had a chance to see some of rodeo’s biggest superstars! I was joined by Kelli Jackson, Miss Rodeo America; Jourdan Han, Miss Rodeo Montana; Kiley Boe, Miss Cody Stampede; Desiree Bridges, Miss Teton County Fair and Rodeo and Kaitlyn Mentock, Miss Sheridan WYO Rodeo. We stayed busy with a river raft trip, a trolley tour and many parades and rodeo performances! The Cody Stampede did not disappoint! LeRoy (my truck) even had fun because Fremont Motors of Cody gave Kiley Boe an identical truck to drive for the weekend! Meanwhile, Kelli Jackson and I had the privilege to drive a Dodge Challenger! A big thanks to Tim Maheiu (The Queen Daddy) and the entire rodeo committee for taking such great care of us!! After the dust settled at the Cody Stampede, I was on my way to the Laramie Jubilee Days! I have been going to Jubilee Days for the last four years so it was an honor to be a guest speaker at the queen’s luncheon. Because I go to school in Laramie, I’ve had a chance to build a relationship with quite a few of the committee members so it was a real treat to be able to see them all again! I always enjoy the great rodeo and parade in Laramie! My next destination was the Central Wyoming Fair and Rodeo in Casper! I called my new friends, Don and Lenda Sanders, whom I met earlier in the year at the Wyoming Horse Expo to ask if I could borrow a horse. They were delighted for me to ride their horse and they offered for me to stay at their house. I am so thankful for their friendship and I had a blast getting to know them better! Although the parade and rodeo were windy, I was surrounded by great people and I loved every minute of it! The wind blew so hard in Casper; it blew me all the way to Sheridan for the

80th anniversary of the Sheridan WYO Rodeo! What a great rodeo!! Between the rodeos, the Indian Relay Races, the polo matches and the parade, I made some great memories! A big thanks goes out to Tamara Mann who provided me with great horses to ride and the Mischke family for welcoming me into their home! I was blessed to have the opportunity to carry the American Flag during the rodeo, which was special because they did a tribute to the military during the grand entry. I also had a chance to watch as Kaitlyn Mentock crowned the new Miss Sheridan WYO Rodeo, Kimberly Kuhn. I had a few days to stop in Alta before heading to the Daddy of ‘em All! Cheyenne Frontier Days is a source

of pride for all of Wyoming as it is an attraction for rodeo enthusiasts across the world! I was honored to host many state queens throughout the week and we stayed busy! Here is an idea of our schedule; each morning would find us downtown flipping pancakes for the Annual Pancake Breakfast! We had a blast flipping flapjacks off a chuck wagon to be caught by the local Boy Scout troop! It’s hard to

believe that 40,000 people were served 100,000 pancakes!! Our afternoons consisted of world-class rodeo performances where we participated in the famous Cheyenne Fly-bys. We watched as world champions and the top cowboys competed for the buckle from one of prorodeo’s premier events. The evening activity consisted of a champion line-up of concerts each night including Brooks and Dunn, Dierks Bently and Alan Jackson! While outside of the arena I visited the Indian Village, the Old West Museum and shopped on the Midway! There were many people who made my stay so special. A big thanks goes out to

Jackson

Keeping Up With Er in Esther and Darrel Moore for welcoming me into their home; Arlene Kensinger for arranging events, Taco John’s parties and sharing her incredible museum with me; Brad Boner and Cara Rank from the Jackson Hole News and Guide for following me on this journey and treating me like a celebrity! I left the festivities of Cheyenne Frontier Days early to attend the Red Desert Round-up in Rock Springs! Dean Parker and his team at Fremont Motors did a great job promoting the rodeo. They used LeRoy for the pre-show and during the rodeo. I had the chance to visit with our National Director, Laurie Thoman-Hernandez who provided a horse for me during my stay. I participated in the golf tournament and helped with the Marshmallow Drive with the local queens, Chrissy Wilmetti, Shaylee Metz and Miss Wyoming, Alicia Grove. I headed North to the Riverton Big Wind Round-up next. I spent two short days that I spent in Riverton, but I enjoyed every moment of it! I had the chance to meet aspiring rodeo queens as we put on a mini-clinic. I did three autograph signings and two great rodeos! I even had time to visit my old roommate who lives in Riverton! I hit the road again and made my way to Gillette for the Energy-Town ProRodeo. It was an exciting time to be in Gillette because the rodeo took place directly after the National High School Rodeo. I drove there a day early and was able to help with the steer roping competition the day before the rodeo stared. Although the steer roping didn’t get over until after midnight, everyone had fun! The next morning I had a radio interview with Rocket Ryan the rodeo clown which was great because he liked to tease me during the rodeo! I helped carry flags and I enjoyed getting to know the committee! The Wyoming State Fair is host to the Miss Rodeo Wyoming Pageant. Eight beautiful young ladies represented themselves and their hometowns with dignity and grace. The four-day pageant culminated with the crowing of Brittany Richards as Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2011. It’s hard to believe that it has been a year since I started on this journey. My farewell lap brought an overwhelming sense of gratitude for Wyoming, rodeo and my incredible support system! I have confidence in the future of Miss Rodeo Wyoming and I know Brittany will do great things for our state!! Finally, I made a trip to Evanston for the 75th anniversary of the Evanston Cowboy Days! I was welcomed by the amazing committee who joined me in a tour of the area elementary schools to prepare for the annual event. I became a professional “noodler” when I caught tons of fish with my bare hands during the Kids’ Fish Catch! I got soaked when bullfighter, Marc Gill picked me up and dumped me into the pool! But with the help of the local queens, we got him back!! The newly crowned Miss Rodeo Utah Martina Wardle drove up for the rodeos and it was great to see her! This is an exciting time of year to be a rodeo fan because cowboys are battling for a spot at the Wrangler NFR and a chance to win a gold buckle! I’m looking forward to my next stop: the 100th Anniversary of the Pendleton Round-up! Stay tuned for a recount of my tour of Oregon!! I hope to see you all at Brittany’s Coronation in Laramie on October 9th!

God Bless! Erin Heffron
