APPALACHIAN CONFERENCE

IPHC DM ON TARGET

Many of the local DM Departments in The Pentecostal Holiness Church have organized Senior Adult Programs. Conferences across America have programs catering to the Senior Adults also. Plans now to have a National Convention, brings this ministry to a higher level. For a number of years the greater attention was given to programming and training for the youth of our congregations. Demographics have now shown an urgent need for more consideration to be given to the fastest growing population which is the Senior Adults. “For the first time in the history of our nation, there are more senior citizens than teenagers.” 1 Statistics from The United States Department of Health and Human Services show that from 1900 to 2004 life expectancy increased from 47.6 to 78.4 years of age. James L. Knapp in his book, The Graying of the Flock, stated that this increase was due to a number of scientific discoveries and technological advancements. He elaborated by stating that at the beginning of the century ; indoor plumbing, refrigeration and penicillin were either unknown to Americans or available only to the most privileged individuals. The fact that our society is aging, is evidenced month after month by those watching the Today Show. One centenarian after another are seen being congratulated and often telling to what they attribute their longevity. The percentage of Seniors in the population is set to far exceed the high figure that is seen today. “Between 1946 and 1964 ,76 million babies were born.”2 The first of the Baby Boomers as they have been termed are to reach the age of 65 in 2011. By 2029 the last of that grouping will have reached retirement age. “At that time 20% of the American population will be 65 years or older.”3

In a survey done by James L. Knapp; he contacted 754 pulpit ministers and asked for the percentage of their congregations who were 65 years of age or older. The numbers ranged from 0-19%. This indicated to him that the membership in churches today is very similar to that of the society at large. A second survey was done by James L. Knapp using figures from The Churches of Christ, the Southern Baptist Convention, the Presbyterian Church(USA) and the Lutheran Church(Missouri Synod) He stated that he was astounded at the results. In an average congregation 23% of the members were 65 years of age or older. The number 23 was the average but in some instances the percentage went as high as 60% of the membership being over 65 years of age. “Today senior adults live longer, are more active, and are more creative than ever before. Almost one quarter of the average American‟s life will be spent in retirement.”4 Retirement from one‟s profession does not mean that activities must cease. There are so many avenues of service open to individuals today i.e. community service, short term mission trips and visitation in nursing homes. This is just a short list of a much larger selection that is available. Many persons who have reached retirement age are physically and financially able to volunteer for services and enjoy being able to help those less fortunate. With experience in many fields, wisdom and knowledge to offer, they are ready to serve! As a denomination we are on target to channel these men and women into avenues of service but also to offer Christian fellowship, social activities, and excursions which provide inspiration, education and lots of laughter. In an earlier publication of the General DM Department(formerly CEM), two questions were asked and answered: Does the Church Need a Senior‟s Ministry? and Do The Seniors Need the Church? The DM in the IPHC say a resounding „YES‟!!!!

WE SALUTE

REPRESENTATIVES OF TODAY‟S SENIOR ADULTS

MRS. ANNIE BAIN UNDERWOOD, served in many capacities

in The International Pentecostal Holiness Church. From lay member to Pastor‟s wife, and leader of various departments in the churches where her husband served as pastor. Each ministry was fulfilled with faithfulness and efficiency. One writer stated “With her love for Christ and her dedication to His Kingdom, Sister Underwood never hesitated to do any job that presented itself. “ When her husband died, she chose to use the insurance monies to build a church in Africa as a memorial to him. The money could have aided her in

someway, but God‟s work came first with this saintly lady.

As the mother of Bishop B.E.Underwood who served with excellence

as General Superintendent of The International Pentecostal Holiness Church and stepmother of a National Youth Director, Rev. Bane T. Underwood Sister Underwood blessed her denomination. All of her children studied at one of the church colleges. Her love for God and her church was evidenced in many ways. When

most people at her age would have been “resting” at home…she was

attending Camp Meeting Services in her wheel chair. Sister Underwood blessed all who knew her until her entrance into the presence of the Lord at the age of ONE HUNDRED AND THREE YEARS AND ELEVEN MONTHS.

MR. S.A. FRANKLIN, REMAINS BUSY AT 100 YEARS. This was the heading of an article written for the Appalachian Conference Messenger in Virginia. Mr. Franklin was licensed to preach by the conference in 1948 and ordained in 1952. He is now officially retired, but still enjoys preaching. He stated that he has three different places to preach when he can manage to get there. In an interview with Mr. J.R. Schrader on November 6th. 2007, Mr. Franklin reminisced of his becoming a Christian and his ministry. He has led a busy life as a “tent making preacher” Helping to support himself by working at the Lynchburg Foundry. He told of his father and grandfather being carpenters before him.

Sanford‟s Shop is in back of his home in Radford. Here he does wood projects such as making trash bins, bird houses. Churches and log cabins. He still enjoys gardening, cooking, and works crossword puzzles. An active life for someone who has reached his ONE HUNDRETH BIRTHDAY.

MR. NORTH T. SELVEY, was a member of The First Pentecostal

Holiness Church in Pulaski for thirty-five years and was the oldest member of The Thorn Spring Country Club. It was stated at his funeral that he had supported one missionary family for forty-eight years. This attested to his great love for the Lord. The prayer group which met weekly at the church, missed his faithful attendance. Even today, remarks are still made concerning his active participation in the church activities.

One of the highlights of his life was the game of Golf. (See photo of him playing golf on his NINETY-EIGHTH birthday.) In an article in the Southwest Times, the writer mentioned that Mr. Selvey had outlived most of his golfing partners On as many as five days in the week, he would join with whoever was

at the club and wanted to play. It was recorded that he had ‟a hole in one‟ six times. His record in playing bowls was also outstanding and he continued to play up until the time of his death.

89 AND STILL ROLLING was the description given to MRS. VIRGINIA WEATHERMAN, in an article telling

about her expertise at the Bowling Lanes in Pulaski, VA. Apparently most people in seeing Virginia would imagine seeing her in a kitchen or being the perfect housewife. At Leisure Lanes they know her as a highly accomplished bowler with a wicked hook ball. She has been a

member of the Tuesday Morning Coffee League for a long time. At 89 Virginia was the senior member of the league. Born prematurely, her father devised an incubator to keep her warm. This doubtless saved her life. She worked at the Radford Army Ammuntiton Plant at Jefferson Mills and for Pulaski County.

Until recent months she has attended the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Pulaski(Family Worship Center) and faithfully attended the Intercessory Prayer Group on Tuesdays. Only ill health hinders her from continuing to be in regular services.

IX. IDEAS FOR YOUR NEW SENIOR ADULT MINISTRY These ideas came from Directors in reply to a request for their duties and the

activities of their groups.

1. Christiansburg, VA

As senior adult ministry director, it is my calling to minister to the needs of those age 50 and over at Harbor of Hope. We have a special calling on our lives and we need to find our unique spot in Kingdom work. I feel my role is to actually make the senior adults feel youthful and

needed. It may sound strange but I also feel it is my responsibility to keep them smiling and healthy through humor - and we use a lot of that! Each member of our group feels a connectedness to young people and I am proud to say that our main goal is to form a bond with the younger generation. We are mentors, role models and workers for their causes and needs. Our meetings revolve around fellowship, devotions, the planning of "help-mate" projects and fifteen minutes of fun.

Our major undertaking each year include the following:

In January - collect a donation of household goods to help needy families throughout the year.

In March - begin planning toward projects to help fund the enrollment of our youth going to camp.

In May - The Little Buddies sponsor is held and it is the major fund-raiser for camp funds. We have collected as much as $679 in years past to help finance our youth's enrollment in camp. In July - We kickoff a month of collecting school supplies for youth of our church. In August - We distribute the supplies and also look for means to help buy clothing, if needed, for school age children.

In September or October - We plan some sort of outing, either with the conference or on our own.

In November - We have our year-end holiday breakfast. We collect donations at this breakfast to help at least two needy families in the church who may need assistance during the holidays. This month, with just 21 people donating, we received enough donations to give two families $300 each. This was amazing!

God has blessed our ministry and I believe there are 2 reasons for this - we remain connected to our young people and we give, give, give until it hurts

In His service,

Bonnie Roberts Erickson

2. Bluewell, WV

Monthly (except November and December) the last Sunday of each month, we have a senior luncheon at the church directly following morning worship for all seniors and their spouses

The first Wednesday evening in December we have our Senior Christmas Dinner which consists of dinner, fellowship, and games with prizes for the winners.

Twice each year, usually in Spring (around Easter) and Fall (around Labor Day) we have a cookout at our house for the seniors and their spouses.

We meet once each week for a time of Bible Study, praying for needs, and have volunteers who are not working to go and visit the sick.

Barry and Shirley Sadler

3. Pulaski, VA.

How do you describe our Sr. Ministry ? The main focus is that our Seniors have fellowship and fun when we get together. For some, it's the only time to get with anyone for conversation and fellowship and maybe even a laugh. I like to keep our time on the light side. Let's see, you want to know my job description. I would describe it as doing what comes our way that needs done, but listed is specific ministries that we try to do on a regular basis.

1. Meeting on a monthly basis for a meal and fellowship. 2. Taking care of bereaved families

3. Checking on and fixing meals for anyone who is sick or who has come home from the hospital. We have a committee for this.

4. Visitation of shut-ins or those who live alone that maybe we are the only one they see in a week or even longer 5. I schedule a Senior Revival usually in August during the daytime, when our seniors get out more often. It will go from Tuesday - Thursday. We serve meals after each service. VERY SUCESSFUL!!! 6. We plan a fall Sunshine Tour trip, usually in September. VERY SUCCESSFUL!!! We have a committee for this. 7. We do special baskets or boxes for shut-ins and nursing home patients on holidays. 8. We will do anything that is asked of us, whatever it may be. We haven't turned anyone down. I would like to this year have someone committed to drive the van and bring those in that don't drive.

Page 26: MISSION STATEMENT · 2014-04-29 · Eagle Fellowship. 3. Committees as needed, to be appointed to handle various aspects of the ministries. 4. Senior leaders and committee members

26

I would like to this year have a Senior Newsletter sent out to all our seniors on a monthly basis. I would like to at least double in numbers the Seniors that attend our monthly fellowships. I would like to get a larger commitment from more people that will help in ministering to the seniors, for that is what it is all about. Well and able seniors ministering to the not well and able seniors. I absolutely cannot do this on my own. I have wonderful ladies and men that help in any way that they can. They wait to be asked and are always willing. We also need to be more consistent having a monthly planning meeting. We do get together and plan periodically but not enough. We do have a committee of several people. I don't normally plan anything on my own without meeting with them. Mary Cochran 4. Caldwell, WV The Senior Adult Ministry of the Caldwell Words of Life Ministries meets monthly with fourteen active members. We have our meetings at the church, local restaurants, local state parks, or at the home of a member. At each meeting we have devotions and pray over the prayer requests. We have enjoyed breakfast, brunch, bag luncheons, and cook outs. We often play bingo with prizes being household items. We recently visited a local nursing home and gave the residents gifts of snacks and toiletries. From our Christmas Dinner, meals were delivered to a family that was unable to get out because of illness. We are striving to expand our circle of friends and have fun doing it. Anna Defibaugh 5. Draper Valley, VA

At Draper Valley Church it is awesome to say the Adult Ministry has reached its first birthday. God has laid two major things on my heart for this ministry: that is opportunities for fellowship with each other and then outreach into the community. For this first year it has been kept fairly simple due to the fact that this is a new thing for our church and it is getting established.

Page 27: MISSION STATEMENT · 2014-04-29 · Eagle Fellowship. 3. Committees as needed, to be appointed to handle various aspects of the ministries. 4. Senior leaders and committee members

27

Also I am the only person organizing the activities. The adult ministry is too young right now for me to be able to delegate any other major responsibilities to other people. In the future that will hopefully change.

As for the things we do. We have had several bus trips to different restaurants. We went to Shatley Springs, NC, the Homeplace in Catawba, and Shoney’s in Dublin.

We participated in the Spring Rally at New Life Temple. I announced to the congregation about the fall fellowship trip to PA but we only had one couple from our church that attended this trip. But we thoroughly enjoyed it.

As for outreach, I have contacted a local nursing home Edgemont Center. For Easter we donated gift bags with various items and cards colored by the children at our church. I took a group two different times to the nursing home for us all to interact and sing hymns with the residents.

At Christmas our ministry participated in an angel tree program with that nursing home and two others, members of our congregation bought gifts to donate to the homes. I've also recently taken on some home visits, where I go and visit different homes where there are elderly members of our congregation that that are sick and unable to come to church.

Brandy Smith

6. Roanoke, VA, (New Life Temple)

We meet on the second Tuesday each month, with the exception of July and August. At this time a “pot luck” meal is enjoyed followed by a speaker, special music, etc… There is a committee of six, including the Senior’s Pastor who plan thre overall program. There are others who have specific responsibilities. Trips to places of interest are taken. A favorite trip for a Christmas outing is to the old train station in Bedford, Va. The building was remodeled and today houses a lovely restaurant. Baskets are prepared and taken to members who are house bound. An outreach ministry to various nursing homes is a regular part of the program. Several of the members are involved with the Care Givers Ministry. They visit and minister to the “shut-ins.” Walter Lee and Ann Wood

SECTION VI. EXPANSION

“Enlarge the place of thy tent,…lengthen thy cords and strengthen thy stakes.” Isaiah 54: 2

The Senior Adults Ministry has three purposes: Fun , food and fellowship!! One main thing that must be remembered this ministry must never compete with other functions and ministries in the church. Eventually as the ministry has been functioning for a few years, there could come a “lull” in the activities, some members seem to be losing interest. EXPAND!!!!! Establish a communications network. This is not a prayer chain and should never compete with the church prayer chain. There may be times when some need is mentioned on this network….don’t fail to pray for that need. This communications network is simply to communicate. It allows you to get messages to your members more quickly. It might concern the death of a member of the group or a member of their extended family. It could be a wedding , a special event or someone needing help. This should be a volunteer listing of names and any member can ask that their name and number not be listed on the roster. RECREATION: Organize walking groups . Offer exercise classes, form a car pool or bus trip to an outlet mall. Allow the member time to shop, eat or whatever their interests are. ENRICHMENT: Hobby classes, stained glass projects, ceramics, wood carving, etc. NURTURE: Visit shut-ins and nursing home residents. Check on inactive

senior adults in the church or neighbourhood. OUTREACH: Your community needs volunteers!! Obtain information on community helps that are available for senior adults and share with group members. Patients in nursing homes often need someone to write letters for them. What ever skills that the members have can always be a help and blessing to someone in the vicinity of the church. A note can be put up on a bulletin board in local stores to advise that members are available to assist where needed. CHURCH NEEDS: Pastor can often suggest opportunities for service around the church. Volunteer !! Seldom would such an offer be turned down.
