First-year Students: Do you know where you will live in August 2015? Perhaps the Lasallian Community is the place for you.

What is the Lasallian Community?

It is a sophomore living-learning community living in Becket Hall. Today, twenty-one students participate in the Mission and Ministry Center’s Lasallian Community.

What would you do if you were in the Lasallian Community?

You will take a .25 credit class: Listening to Life: Living Lasallian. You will study the life of John Baptist de La Salle, the works of the Brothers, and expressions of the Lasallian Mission and Spirituality. You will explore social justice issues, learn spiritual practices, and examine your life through the lenses of culture, vocation and the Catholic Tradition.

You will serve as a tutor or mentor to a fifth grader at Saint Martin de Porres School in Oakland in the classroom, after school and on weekend adventures. You will build your Lasallian Community on retreats, over a meal, in reflection, serving others, and sharing your voice. Maybe it’s time for you to check out the Lasallian Community.

Where in the World are our LSI students and staff?

The Lasallian Service Internship course, commonly known as LSI, has been a Jan Term tradition at Saint Mary’s College since 1985. Its goal is to provide op-portunities for students to engage reflectively in the Lasallian tradition of direct service to the poor.

Each student enrolled in the LSI course spends the entire January Term volunteering with a school or organization that works with the underserved. Stu-dents choose where they would like to volunteer from a variety of types of local, domestic, and in-ternational service sites including schools, youth programs, homeless shelters, daycare centers, social service agencies, and community centers. They live in intentional communities or with host families at or near the locations where they work.

And this year, for the first time ever, three staff mem-bers are accompanying LSI student groups through a new Mission Education opportunity.

Students participating in theLasallian Service Internship this yearare serving in the following locations:

St. Martin de Porres - Oakland, CASt. Mary’s Center - Oakland, CADe La Salle/St. Cecilia’s - St. Louis, MOLa Salle Academy - New York, NYServiam Gardens - New York, NYSaint Raphael Academy - Pawtucket, RITides Family Services - Pawtucket, RICathedral High School - El Paso, TXLa Salle Educational Center - Po Thum, Cambodia Kids Alive International - Dominican RepublicCasArcobaleno - Scampia, Italy Casa de los Angeles - San Miguel de Allende, MexicoLa Salle English and Computer Center - Yangon, Myanmar Nidan Foundation Nepal - Khadichaur, NepalBahay Pag-asa - Bacolod City, PhilippinesLasallian Community Education Services - Colombo, Sri Lanka
