Dear Friend of MAF,

With Christmas approachingand the spirit of giving setting us off in search ofthe perfect gift for friends and family, this catalog presents a special opportunity for you to give a gift that will make a lasting difference in the lives of isolated people around the world.Instead of giving a material object that might soon

be forgotten, consider how you might be able togive a gift that opens doors to talking about theGospel with others. Your choice to give a gift that

positively impacts someone in a remote place sends a significant message: You can make a differ-ence. And even more so, you can contribute toward helping someone experience the power ofthe Gospel and hear the truth. In 2011, MAF faced many obstacles and challenges, but all the while celebrated God’s faithful-

ness as we remained committed to our calling. From delivering vaccinations for the measles andcholera outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to assisting with the famine in Somalia, MAF responded to immediate needs as we maintained a daily presence in areasdependent upon our services. This Christmas season, I hope that you consider sending a gift in honor of the special people

in your life. Over the following pages of this catalog, you will read firsthand accounts of how MAFis turning your support into a lasting impact and stories of God using MAF staff to influence others.

This year, we have also conveniently included three cards you can send tofriends or family to let them know you are giving a gift on their behalf (morecards are available upon request). Larger gifts may also qualify for one of ourpremium gifts to give away or keep if you like.As you select gifts from the following pages, may you experience God’s joy

and rejoice in your opportunity to generously give to help build His King-dom and transform lives all over the world.

Yours in Christ,

John C. Boyd, President and CEO, MAF USA

Gifts from last year’s giving catalog helped do so many great things. Here are a few highlights of the impact friends like you have made through your generous support of MAF.

WITH YOUR HELP LAST YEAR, MAF …• executed 33,365 flights • transported 94,961 passengers • delivered 9.18 million pounds of cargo

LIVING WATERAn MAF team of workers helped construct four new wells this year in

the African country of Mali where Islam, animism, and witchcraft are themain religions. The team also showed the “JESUS” film and shared theGood News. Thirty-three villagers made commitments to follow Christand are being discipled by local pastors. Praise God for this unique ministry that brings life-sustaining and living water.

DELIVERING BIBLES IN PAPUA, INDONESIALast year the Lani-speaking people of the highland areas of Papua, Indonesia, received a gift 35 years in the

making–the Bible in their own language. Throughout the translation process, MAF supported the work of translators from CrossWorld, Christian Missionary Alliance, and World Team. This year, MAF helped deliver the second load of Lani Bibles–10,000 Bibles in total–to highland areas that are accessible only by plane.

MAF pilot Tim Chase and his wife, Karen, are in Lubumbashi where MAF is completing many flights to combat ameasles epidemic.Karen writes, “Malemba is a 1.5-hour

MAF flight or a two-day overland trip thatincludes horrendous roads, barricades bycorrupt traffic police demanding exorbitantbribes, and a risky river crossing on a bat-tered, single-vehicle ferry. Last August, fullyhalf of Tim’s flying was for MSF (DoctorsWithout Borders). He has made 13 flightsinto Malemba, carrying nearly 100 staff andclose to 14,000 pounds of vaccines andother medical cargo. The airstrip at the nearby township of

Mukubu had been out of service for manyyears and was badly overgrown, but theresidents wanted MSF’s help so desperatelythat they orchestrated a community effortof 300 people who worked for four days to clear and reopen the landing field soTim could deliver an MSF survey team and preliminary supplies. In addition, heconducted 11 flight hours of survey flyingover two days while the MSF-Netherlandsmission mapped out other isolated loca-tions around the province to be the basesof operation in successive phases of thevaccination campaign in the very near future.”

FLY A MEDICAL TEAM Mission hospitals and remote clinics call upon MAF to

transport doctors and nurses to and from their facilities. For $370, we can take a doctor-nurse team to the placethey’re most needed.

FLY MEDICAL SUPPLIESIn the remote village of Danowage, Papua, one

of the village wives, Ledipena, was suffering fromcerebral malaria. She was having seizures, and herbreathing was labored; her health was declining rapidly. A medical evacuation was needed, but theonly plane that could land there was the MAF floatplane MP-MAO, which was being inspected and

was unavailable. The other option was a two-day trip down the river, which was out of the question.

Eventually, the missionaries who were caring for her ran out of IV quinine and

fluids. They made another emergency call to MAF, and an airdrop was arranged. The MAF plane flew in low over the village and paddedboxes that contained the medications werepushed out. The woman was able to receive the IVs she needed and began to improve.Every week, MAF transports tons of vital

emergency and medical cargo. In hundreds of remote areas, clinics and hospitals receive theirmedicine, medical equipment, and supplies from MAF airplanes. For $72, we can deliver 75 pounds of medical supplies.

FLY AN EMERGENCY MEDICAL EVACUATION For those living in the dense jungles of Kalimantan,

Indonesia, or the high mountain villages of Papua, access to healthcare can require several days ofwalking over rough terrain. When injuries, serious illness, or complications during childbirth occur inthese isolated places, many times the only hope of reaching medical help is an MAF airplane flyingfrom small, hand-hewn airstrips. The average MAFmedical evacuation flight costs about $1,000.Your gift of $55 will share the cost of an emergencyflight to save lives in some of the most isolated villages in the world.

In the rugged mountains of Lesotho,Africa, MAF pilot Daniel Hulls and mechanic Roger Clark were preparing for takeoff from a remote mountainclinic when a “Code 1” call came in—a medical emergency.

A young mother had just given birth. The baby was fine, but the mother wascontinuing to bleed. She needed surgeryfast, or she would die. The only othertravel option was a 10-hour bone-jarringride in a minibus taxi, which she proba-bly would not have survived. Instead, the MAF flight delivered her to the capital city of Maseru in 25 minutes. One week later, Roger saw her and

the baby among a group of passengers. She was returning home, strong now.

In Democratic Republic of theCongo, church leaders are trying tohelp heal and reconcile a country thathas been torn apart by ethnic andtribal conflicts. When Daniel Kasereka, head of

Organisation Evangélisation,Intercession and Liberation (OEIL),began his quest to equip local pastors on how to facilitate a biblicalreconciliation process in 2004, it wasdangerous. While the roads were already challenging due to their poorcondition, the presence of armed assailants made land travel treacherous. However, MAF solved that problem

for Kasereka, flying him across thecountry to meet with other pastors, aswell as flying other pastors to regionalreconciliation events. His ministry hassince begun to thrive and is more efficient at reaching others in ways that weren’t possible before.“Now that we have reached all

sectors of the community, we aregoing to the militia,” Kasereka said.“We are teaching them the Gospeland reaching such a big area, thanksto MAF.”

FLY AN INDIGENOUS PASTORAs the Gospel is spread to more and more people

groups, the need for pastors and church leaders is multiplyingin Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Increasingly, indigenouschurch leaders are asking MAF to assist them with travel to remote churches, not only to lead the flocks there, but to

train up new church leaders and pastors as well. MAF can transport a pastor to a remote church for $185. You can share the cost with a gift of $45 and make a difference for a remote congregation.

FLY A BIBLE TRANSLATION TEAMBible translation is one of the most important tools missionaries

use to reach a people group for Christ. Providing God’s Word in their own heart language allows indigenous

people to explore and discover Him for themselves. In Africa, Indonesia, and

Latin America, Bible translators and missionaries depend on MAF flights to get them

safely and quickly to remote ministry sites. You can fly afull translation team for $1,000. Or, your gift of $35 to share

the cost will help bring God’s Word to a people group who havenever read the Bible in their own language.

Gift9BIBLE STORIES FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT READIn many isolated communities, modern education is unavailable and the majority of the people cannot

read. Some cultures are based on oral traditions and do not have a written language. Using God’s Storymaterials and Bible storytelling, MAF orality specialist Regina Manley trains local pastors and church leaders to share the Gospel using the oral storytelling traditions of the people they are serving. “Many of the isolatedpeople we are trying to reach cannot just pick up the Bible and read it,” Regina said. “Oral storytelling makes it possible to give them God’s Word, story by story. They can have it as a treasure in their heart pocket–readyfor their own reflection or to share with others.” Providing a workshop to train several local church leaderscosts about $6,000. You can share the cost with a gift of $60 and put God’s Word in the “heart pockets”of indigenous people.

CELL PHONE BIBLE STUDY RESOURCESSeventy-seven percent of the world population

uses a mobile phone. MAF provides cutting-edge technology to help Christians “blend in with thecrowd” while studying their Bibles or taking discipleship courses … all via their mobile phones. It’s just one of the creative ways MAF brings the Word to those who have no access to it or who cannot openly read it without persecution. Developing the tools to enable a mobile theology curriculum or Bible study program costs $60,000. You can share the cost with a gift of $50 and provide Bibles and training that would otherwise not be accessible.

Ten days after the 2010 Haiti earth-quake, nine-year-old Mika was in badshape. Both of her feet had beencrushed when her home collapsed.Without orthopedic surgery, infectioncould set in, possibly taking her life.Surgery would have to be performedwithin 24 to 36 hours, or her feetwould require amputation.MAF pilot Will White knew there was

a team of doctors back in Port-au-Prince, waiting their turn for an MAFflight. Maybe they could help. He putMika and her mother on the plane andtook off from the island of La Gonave. On their arrival in Port-au-Prince, thosedoctors were standing next to theplane with all of their medical supplies. It turns out they were just what the girl needed … orthopedic surgeons! In no time the doctors were examiningMika’s feet. Within minutes, Will wasairborne again, heading for the hospitalwith three surgeons, Mika, and hermother aboard. Today, Mika has theuse of both feet.

Gift22FLY RELIEF WORKERS TO A DISASTER SITEIn Bunia, eastern Democratic Republic of the

Congo, MAF pilots know that a call for a Saturdayflight means “urgent” or “life and death.” It usuallymeans a Congolese village has been attacked bythe LRA. The people live in sheer terror knowingthat rebels can come at any moment to rape, burn, steal, kidnap, or kill. “We need to get to Dingila, Ngilima, and

Doruma,” says a caller from Doctors Without Borders. “The LRA was there last night. So many are injured.” For $185, we can take one relief worker to the place they’re most needed.

MAF pilots Dave Forney and Paul College fly over the remote jungles of Kalimantan, Indonesia. Last year, they set out for a trek through the jungles of Borneo to discover what the terrain was like on foot. Dave Forney says oftheir experience, “We could have spent a comfortable, quick, eight minutesin one of our little MAF airplanes and covered the entire distance that ittook us five grueling days to cover by foot!

“It’s simply impractical and often impossible for most people to travellong distances by any means other than MAF out here in the jungles of Kalimantan.”

FLY THE PLANEM E E T I N G M A I N T E N A N C E N E E D S

Stan Lincoln couldn’t put it out of hismind. As the chief of maintenance forthe East Democratic Republic of theCongo (DRC) program, he was uneasywith what looked like the beginningsof a malfunction on one part of a Caravan plane he was monitoring.Due to the unusual appearance, hedecided to take a picture and send itto the plane’s engineers to see if theycould discover what might be wrongwith the part. With the plane scheduled for a

four-hour flight in the morning, Standecided to ground the plane so hecould take a further look. He took the engine apart to retrieve the questionable part and mailed it backto headquarters. It turned out that Stan made a good decision–it was discovered that six turbine discs werecracked. What could that have meant?Imminent–and sudden–engine failure. No pilot wants to grapple with that situation, especially over the unforgivingjungle terrain in DRC and the massiveLake Victoria, which was part of thenext day’s scheduled flight plan.

In fact, MAF standards exceed comparable air service requirements in the U.S., leading to a safety recordthat is outstanding and ever improving. Your gift of$1,500 covers an entire month of maintenance for one of our hard-working planes. This yearalone, 33,400 MAF flights will send hope and helpinto the most remote, hard-to-reach mission fields.Thousands of people in Africa, Asia, Eurasia, and Latin America depend on our pilots. And our pilotsdepend on safe equipment.

Daily use, rough airstrips, and the heat of the tropical areas where MAF serves mean planes need to be repainted every 10 to15 years. While meticulous care is taken to ensure the engine is in perfectworking order, passengers only see the condition of the outside of the plane. Painting aircraft on thefield is not an easy task. In the areas where a suitable paint shop is not available, MAF workers set up

makeshift painting stations and musttake the plane apart piece-by-piece.For the labor and the special paintneeded, it costs roughly $12,000 topaint each plane. There are currentlyfive planes in the MAF fleet that arein need of an allover paint job. Yourgift of $12,000 or $120 to sharethe cost will help reflect MAF’sstrong emphasis on plane maintenance, both inside and out.

Gift26PURCHASE A CARAVANAs the scarcity and price of aviation gasoline continues to increase overseas, MAF is hoping to add two

Caravan aircraft to its fleet in 2012. This durable aircraft uses inexpensive and readily available jet fuel andcan haul up to twice the number of passengers and four times the amount of cargo than other small aircraft. Each Caravan aircraft costs an average of $1,800,000. By sharing the cost of $1,800, you will help increase the effectiveness of MAF’s fleet and reach more isolated people with the life-transforminglove of Jesus Christ.

FILL THE FUEL TANKMore than 30 Cessna 206s reside in MAF’s worldwide fleet, and they complete

a large bulk of daily flights to remote regions. The 206 is a perfect airplane for flying to rugged airstrips—it can take off and land in a very short distance. These sturdy planes are fueled by aviation gasoline (avgas), which is becoming more and more difficult to obtain. Watching prices fluctuate at the local gas pump is a good example of how supply dictates price. The low supply of avgas in many of the remote locations where MAF serves is requiring some MAF pilots to pay between $12 and $16 per gallon. Consider this comment from MAF staff in the field:

“We turned down several flight requests because we didn’t have enough reserve fuel to keep flying.” –Mozambique

Your gift of $495 can provide 45 gallons of avgas in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Or, if you’d like to share the cost, $55 will buy five gallons. By providing fuel for MAF’s planes, you will enable thousands of isolated people to see the compassion of Jesus Christ in action.
