After almost eight years with the Mission Fire Rescue Service, Larry Watkinson is going home.

The fire chief has decided to return to the Okanagan to become the new chief of the Penticton Fire Department.

“It’s been a great time. Coming in as assistant chief here was a good move for

me and it was a position I was really look-ing forward to because it was in training and in fire prevention and operations which was my passion,” he said.

Originally from Kelowna, Watkinson came to the Lower Mainland to work with the Justice Institute, overseeing all firefighter training. But he missed the atmosphere of being in the firehall and responding to emergencies.

When he saw the Mission job posting

for an assistant chief, he decided to go for it.

Once accepted, he worked with chief Ian Fitzpatrick for five years, until Fitzpatrick retired.

The search was on for a new chief in Mission but Watkinson didn’t apply.

“I was still happy in my role.”But Mission’s city manager and mayor

contacted him and asked if he wanted to be appointed as chief.

“I said, with the right tools in place, yeah.”

As assistant chief, Watkinson had witnessed some difficult times at the Mission station.

“The financials were pretty tight.”When he took the job, the district didn’t

fill the assistant chief position.“I was by myself. It was hard. There

were a lot of challenges.”

REVIVERENEW

KEVIN MILLS PHOTO

But with changes in city hall, he said the vision for the fire department became more pro-active.

The empty positions were filled and more focus was put on the department.

“Right now things are really smooth run-ning and the boat is just sailing itself. To be honest, I feel really comfortable leaving right now because I know they’ll be just fine without me at the helm,” he said.

When he took the job, he had set goals to fill.

“I was hired to be one of the leading peo-ple in the transition from a strictly paid, on-call fire department to a composite model where we have career firefighters.”

He was also on hand to negotiate the first two collective agreements and to oversee the move to a 24-hour model where a three-person truck is on duty.

“These are good days.”But the job is still demanding, not just

for Watkinson, but his whole family.“How many times I’ve left my family at

the dinner table, I couldn’t count,” he said in regard to emergency calls to which he frequently responds.

The decision to leave was hard for Watkinson but family came first.

“Primarily, it is all to do with moving my family back to the Okanagan. After adopting our boys (Kodie and Spencer), we

realized it takes more than just parents to raise a family,” he said.

He knows the value of having the sup-port of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, all of whom are in the Okanagan.

He was already traveling back and forth to visit relatives, so when the job opportu-

nity came up in Penticton, he and his wife, Christina, were keen to go back.

Today is Watkinson’s last day on the job. He starts in Penticton on Feb. 1.

“I’ll miss the people the most. Mission was just an incredible community to come into with my family. I love where I live out in Hatzic. I hike the trails every day. We love the wilderness here. I’ve never once run into somebody that’s been rude or not pleasant to me. I’ve always had 100 per cent respect from the community as fire chief.”

‘I’ll miss the people the most’It was a hard decision, but Watkinson said it’s the right move for his familyFrom A1

Dale Unrau will be the new chief in Mission.

Unrau comes to Mission with a wealth of experience, serving most recently as deputy fire chief with the City of Abbotsford, and has held a number of chief officer roles since 2003.

He played an active role in the develop-ment of Abbotsford’s Fire Rescue Service master plans and served as a team lead for the city’s strategic planning team.

He believes a com-munity fire service re-volves around working towards a safer com-munity by providing services that are sus-tainable and reflect best industry practices and thereby earn the trust and respect of the community.

“I am humbled and excited by being en-trusted with the fire chief’s position with the District of Mission. I look forward to work-ing with a great group of people at Mission Fire/Rescue and with

the district. My goal is to provide the same great level of customer service established by Chief Watkinson,” said

Unrau.“We are extreme-

ly fortunate to have someone with Chief Unrau’s experience

available which will allow for a seam-less transition,” said Mission Mayor Randy Hawes.

MISSION HERITAGE ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGThurs, February 25, 2016 at 7:00 pmMission Skills Centre at #209 - 33123 First Ave.

For further information: [email protected]

Members of the association and the community are welcome to attend.

Mission Search and Rescue Society has received a $100,000 grant from the provincial gov-ernment.

The money will be used to purchase new equipment.

“Thanks to this gaming grant we will be able to move out of the ‘90s and purchase an effi-cient and modern command vehicle. We will replace a 1995 converted bread truck that we have been using for the last 10 years,” said Mission Search and

Rescue president John Lemond.“This vehicle is the hub of

our search and rescue opera-tions in the field and will be fitted with the latest technol-ogy specific for search and rescue operations.”

The grant was awarded under the public safety cat-egory, which supports public safety initiatives along with disaster relief and emergen-cy preparedness, such as re-storative justice projects and

search and rescue programs.“Search and rescue societies

are important organizations in our community,” said Simon Gibson, MLA for Abbotsford-Mission.

“Volunteers take time out of their busy lives to trek through the wilderness at all hours of the day to find those in need. I’m proud that we support their operations.”

The announcement was made on Saturday

Jimmy Logan, president of the Mission branch of the Canadian Cancer Society, performs the “address to the haggis” during the society’s annual Robbie Burns’ Supper and Dance. The fundraiser took place on Jan. 23 at Chartwell Cedarbrooke in Mission. The event raised close to $5,000. Organizers are pleased with the amount, considering the society was broken into last week and several items, donated for the silent auction, were stolen. Logan said the public has been “fantastic” as donations of money and services have poured since the incident.

OPINION Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2

Though it was an election promise, Justin Trudeau’s Liberals aren’t going to be able to legalize marijuana overnight.

In fact, the legalization of pot might take longer than the four years they guaran-teed before the next federal election in October 2019.

Undoubtedly, the federal government would like to get started on this promise, since it’s worth millions of tax dollars every year. But when you consider what they already have on their plate, what with ISIS, Syrian refugees, assisted dying and, oh yes, the economy, it’s understand-able that legalizing pot might not be the top item on the Liberals to-do list.

Still, the promise was made, and with

pot already legalized in Washington and Colorado, there is a certain expecta-tion that it is a promise they will follow through on. That leaves our police and justice system in a bit of a legal limbo.

All the existing prohibitions are still in force, but police have had a hard enough time enforcing those and getting puni-tive judgments without the concept of legalization hanging over their heads, in addition to the limited legalization of me-dicinal marijuana.

We need to set out a timeline of how this is going to happen and set some preliminary regulations for licensing and regulation of sales.

YOUR VIEWS

I just read the article regarding 911 calls being directed to Vancouver.

Are you kidding me? Really? So, you’re going to save approx $316,000. How

many lives are you going to jeopardize for this savings?

I find this incomprehensible that we hear about it four days before it goes into effect. I can only imagine what the people in Kent and Harrison

Hot Springs think.I’m a senior and need an ambulance once or

twice a year for breathing difficulties and I can only hope I don’t expire before an ambulance arrives because of an overloaded system or an operator misdirected call.

Pam WhitefordMission

Moving 911 service a bad call?

As an animal advocate since 1995 it has and is al-ways my concern for proper treatment of animals, so it is distressing to learn many may have been in distress and resulted in a warrant and seizure of those from Mission’s The Reptile Guy.

The SPCA is charged with protecting animals and to enforce the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act and ought to be doing so in a fair and constructive manner.

It follows, all animals in the Reptile Guy facility would have been documented upon securing and thus should be reasonably easy to determine con-dition and progress, that would verify if a condition is persisting or possibly lack of attention and care may have caused deterioration of condition.

The BCSPCA must act upon best medical advice and if the subsequent decision was to apprehend the animals in distress we must accept some cred-ibility exists to do so.

I believe all efforts reasonable to assist the facility with animals care is warranted but that said, other variables need to be given careful consideration given the onus to operate an acceptable facility lies with the Reptile Guy.

The Mission Friends of the Library recent-ly donated $1,000 to-wards the purchase of new board books.

This donation was made possible through a grant from the District of Mission and enhances the children’s book col-lection at the Mission Library.

Board books are designed for par-ents to share with their young children. Many board books are specially designed to appeal to babies and their developing brains.

Babies enjoy look-ing at simple pictures with high contrast colours or black and white images. They also especially enjoy looking at photos of other babies and faces.

These new board books, along with the rest of the large col-lection of children’s books at the Mission Library, are for fami-lies to enjoy with the 1,000 Stories Before Kindergarten pro-gram.

This program is for children before they enter Kindergarten and families can sign up for a reading log at the Mission Library.

Family program-ming continues to grow in popularity at the local library, with storytimes running every Wednesday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. and other fun programs like Baby Play Dates.

Members wanted:The Mission Friends

Winning ticket holder soughtA recent break-in at the Canadian

Cancer Society office in Mission may have caused the delay of some good news for a Fraser Valley resident.

The CCS office was broken into on Jan. 16. Among the items stolen were records of tickets sold for a recent West Jet Raffle. CCS officials now have no records of the tickets sold and are

reaching out to the public to see if a local has the winning ticket.

“The West Jet Raffle was drawn on Friday, Jan. 22 and the winning ticket was 079, and unfortunately, due to the break-in we do not know who had ticket 079,” stated Robert Frick of the CCS. “If you hold ticket number 079 please call the CCS at 604-533-1668.”

The Mission Roadrunners had little luck at the seventh annual Timberwolves Classic senior boys basketball tournament in Abbotsford. The Roadrunners opened the tournament on Jan. 21 with a 53-44 loss to host Bateman, with Mission’s Bailey Harper earning player of the game honours. Mission then lost 68-33 to Salmon Arm on Friday to end their run in the tournament. Ronnie Talbot was named Mission player of the game in Friday’s loss.

Mission skier qualifies for BC GamesThe first ever U14 ski compe-

Bryan, a member of the Hemlock Ski Team, made her debut in Whistler at the U14 slalom races event on Jan. 9. Her top finish was 29th out of

49 racers, and that result quali-fied her for the 2016 BC Winter Games ski races at Apex from Feb. 25 to 28.

The Mission native raced three times in Whistler in the competitive Coast Zone divi-sion, and the majority of the racers were older than her, and

had more racing experience.“Great skiing and training at

Hemlock this winter along with hard work added up to good results,” said Rob Lahti, pro-gram director and head coach for Hemlock, and who used to race for Canada on the World Cup circuit.

Outlaws win streak reaches eight gamesBen LYPKAAbbotsford News

It was a play years in the mak-ing for the Mission City Outlaws.

Forward David McGowan dished to defenceman Brock Padgham, who connected with a fresh-off-the-bench Bryce Pisiak, who danced in all alone and beat Abbotsford Pilots goalie Jacob Crawford to win the game in double overtime for Mission.

Outlaws players poured onto the ice to celebrate the winning goal in the 7-6 victory on Friday, and a little bit of breathing room atop the Pilots in the tight Harold Brittain conference standings.

“We’ve worked on that set play for a few years, and it’s the first time it’s ever worked,” said Outlaws head coach Brad Veitch.

The goal capped off a back and forth game that saw the contest tied up on five different occa-sions, and needed three-on-three action to crown a winner.

Veitch said it was a big win for his club.

“I thought our energy level was real good and we came out physi-cal to start,” he said. “In the third, we were pushing to win and I thought they sat back a little bit. We rolled four lines up front for the first two periods, and they didn’t, so I think our guys were a little fresher at the end.”

The teams scored two goals apiece in the game’s first 3:46, as Justin Bowerman and Padgham got the Outlaws on the board. Noah Wiebe added a late goal to put the Outlaws up 3-2 after one. Ryan Sharma gave Mission a 4-2 lead early in the second, but the Pilots battled back to tie the game at four after two periods.

Abbotsford grabbed the lead in the third, but Kolby Steen and Kyle Lennea gave the Outlaws a 6-5 lead, only to have the Pilots score with 2:35 left to send the game to overtime.

“Padgham was a rock out there for us and Steen had a strong game too,” Veitch said. “McGowan and Pisiak were good as always, and I thought Bowerman played really hard for us.”

Pisiak, who scored the winning goal, had a four-point night, and was named the game’s first star. Goalie Joshua Matzek stopped 28 shots to improve to a perfect 3-0 in Pacific Junior Hockey League

play this season. The Outlaws returned to the

ice on Saturday to host the Grandview Steelers, and extend-ed the win streak to eight games with a 4-1 win.

Tristan Dundas opened the scoring in the first, but 62 sec-onds later the Steelers drew even. Mission then got unanswered goals from Steen (two) and Pisiak to earn the win.

Mission held the Steelers to just 19 shots, and goalie Jeffrey Veitch made 18 saves to pick up his 10th win on the season.

The Outlaws opened up a three-point cushion on the sec-ond-place Pilots after the pair of wins, and now have a record of 28 wins, 11 losses, and one overtime loss.

Mission takes on the Ridge Meadows Flames in Maple Ridge on Friday, and then host the Aldergrove Kodiaks on Saturday at the Mission Leisure Centre.

Mission Outlaws have extended their win streak to eight games after defeating the Abbotsford Pilots 7-6 and the Grandview Steelers 4-1 on the weekend.

MISSION RECORD

When Bob Ingram saw his future wife Gayle for the first time, he was on a date with another woman. Gayle was on a date with another man.

In fact, the couple were part of a tri-ple date. It was back in Ontario in the early 1960s when the three couples went out for dinner and dancing.

Bob was a late addition to what was supposed to be a double date. He was invited because he had a car. It was three young ladies and three fellows from the air force going for a night on the town. It ended up being a long, happy life together.

While not on a date with each other, there was something about Gayle that caught Bob’s attention.

“She was cheeky,” he said. “She just had a presence and a good sense of humour. I kind of liked that.”

Three weeks later Bob phoned Gayle and asked her out.

“Seven months later we got mar-ried,” said Gayle. “And it’s never been dull.”

The couple were married on Feb. 15, 1963 and have stayed that way for 52 years.

“We would have gotten married on Valentine’s Day but it was a Friday

and the guys couldn’t get in from the air force base,” explained Gayle.

“And my boss wouldn’t give me the day off, he thought I was too young to get married,” added Bob who was 20 at the time. His bride-to-be was 21.

As time passed, Bob left the air force and decided to come back to BC, where he “knew people” to try and get a job in Victoria.

It was a big move for Gayle.“We didn’t just travel across the

country to B.C., but over to that rock, far, far away from civilization,” she said.

Gayle who has formal training as a singer, had a long range plan to even-tually become a concert singer.

“When I met him, well, change in plans. And it has not been the wrong decision. It was definitely the right thing for me to do. I haven’t lost out on anything.”

Fast forward to 1974 and Bob was now working in Coquitlam with the school district and had two daugh-ters. The couple knew the importance of family.

“Sunday, no matter what, was our day. We’d take the kids somewhere every Sunday,” said Bob.

One popular trip was to drive to Agassiz and visit a gas station.

ice cream ... There was no bridge across the river in those days, we trav-eled across the railway bridge. And that gets your heart pounding,” said Gayle.

They also enjoyed camping with the family, starting with a tent, then a tent trailer and finally a camper van.

“Now we camp on cruise ships,” said Gayle

As Bob continued to work, Gayle, having raised their daughters, went back to school and returned to the workforce as well. She worked for the coroner’s office, in real estate and eventually started her own business creating custom gift baskets.

Despite being busy, they always made sure to spend time together and sometimes apart.

Like all couples, Bob and Gayle had joint interests and separate ones.

“I think it’s important that there are differences because that’s what sometimes stimulates things, the fact that there are differences. And I’ve seen people with the same interests become very competitive. That’s the last thing you need in a marriage, to be competitive,” said Bob.

“It also recognizes that both people have different talents. There’s no way in the world I could ever do the things

that Bob does. I don’t have the skills that he has. And he could never sing,” added Gayle.

They are a great couple, but are individuals as well. And sometimes that individuality has led to minor conflicts.

“Happy marriages don’t come with-out differences at times. There were a few times when I have said ‘Bob, you’d have been much better off married to a little brown mouse who would not argue with you.’ And he’s always said ‘I don’t want a little brown mouse.’”

According to the Ingrams, a sense of humour and respect for one another are keys to a happy marriage. They also advise people to never play the blame game, work out issues, and don’t finger point. Always find a com-promise.

“If you go to bed mad, nobody gets any sleep,” said Gayle.

After 52 years together, both Gayle and Bob agree that their relationship has gotten better, deeper and stronger.

“You either grow apart or you grow together. And we are fortunate enough that we grew together,” said Bob.

Gayle said it takes two to be com-mitted to marriage.

“There’s a difference now, in atti-tude, that if it doesn’t work out we’ll

do something else. It’s a throw away society,” she said.

Gayle said Bob’s fortunate that it all worked out.

“He’s way too old to retrain,” she said.

“I don’t want to go through the

training process again,” he fired back.Through the decades and the expe-

riences, one thing has always made the marriage work - love.

“You’ve got to love. You’ve got to care. It doesn’t work otherwise,” said Bob.

Everybody has seen the Yin and Yang symbol before, it means harmony and cycle of Tao which can be applied into health issues.

The health is basically a state of harmony and balance between body and mind, Qi (vital energy) and blood, even internal organs, etc.

It also means that everything in our body needs to circulate well. There is nothing but to circulate in the universe. Everything follows their own orbits.

Sun and moon circulate, seasons also circulate. Proper circulation of Qi, blood and body fluid can be said to be healthy. On the other hand, the disease is a state of not being healthy, that is, the balance between Yin and Yang is broken in our body, and circulation is not good.

We can say that the homeostasis of body is broken in the view point of western medicine, which results in too much or too little Qi and blood, stagnation,

not good circulation of whole internal system, pain and weakness as well.

The treatment in Eastern Medicine aims first at correcting these unbalances and disharmony, and returning to the healthy circulation of Qi and blood, and restoring one’s own vital energy.

Have you prepared a will?

Last month we discussed

planning for emergencies while

we are living. However, planning in

case we die is also required if you

want your wishes followed.

Who can make a will?A person who is 16 years of age or

older and who is mentally capable of doing so may make a will.

If you don’t have a will, you’re not alone. According to a 2014 report for BC Notaries, just 55 per cent of British Columbians have a signed, legally valid and up-to-date will.

A will is the best way to ensure that the people, charities and organizations you cherish most receive the benefit of your estate. It allows your executor to act immediately to make funeral arrangements and take charge of your estate.

An even greater concern is the lack of a will leaves your children vulnerable to wait in foster care while courts decide on a suitable guardian.

If you die without a will, your estate may not be distributed in the way you would have wished and the costs of administering your estate may also be higher.

Someone (usually spouse or child) must apply to the Supreme Court Registry to be appointed as administrator of your estate. The law specifies who will inherit

(Estate Administration Act) and if no one is available to administer your estate, the Public Guardian and Trustee becomes responsible.

COSCO Health and Wellness Institute has a free workshop on wills and estates and is available to groups of 10 or more. Please contact Gordon Dainard at [email protected] to discuss

booking this workshop for your

group.

10 tips for seniors to avoid a trip to the hospitalAdmission into a

hospital often signals the health decline of a senior. Learn how you can take preventative measures so your loved one can avoid hospitalization.1. PHYSICAL ACTIVITYConsult a doctor

to determine the optimal level and type of physical activity your loved one should be doing. Activities that improve balance, strength and coordination are great to prevent falls. If a senior has injuries or limited mobility, it may be a good idea

to ask a doctor or physiotherapist to customize exercise programs or get someone to supervise.2. NUTRITIONEating a balanced diet

ensures that seniors are getting the vitamins and nutrients crucial to maintain bone strength, keep them healthy and maintain mental acuity. Osteoporosis, loss of bone density and deterioration of bone tissue, is one of the leading causes of hip fractures. Ensuring a proper diet can help minimize the risk of falling.

3. SUPERVISIONHave a family member,

caregiver or friend consistently check up on seniors so they can notice any changes in daily pattern or health. This way, preventative measured can be taken at the earliest signs of decline.4. HOME SAFETYRugs, loose hand-

railings, steep stairs, poorly lit hallways and clutter are just a few things that could be a potential hazard to seniors. Consider getting rid of slippery rugs, installing steady hand-railings,

implementing night lights throughout the home and putting as much items in storage as possible.5. OUTINGSTaking a senior on an

outing can bring them happiness. One of the first symptoms seniors show during decline is withdrawal from activities. Take them on outings to their favorite restaurant, park or a symbolic location. Loneliness is one of the leading causes of depression in seniors so it also may be a good idea to take them to visit a family member or friend.6. MEDICATION

MANAGEMENTSpeak to a doctor to

see if your loved one is taking the right and proper amount of medications. If they are experiencing any symptoms with their

current medications that may be a sign they need to be changed.7. PROVIDE RELIEF TO

AN ELDERLY SPOUSESpouses of the elderly

often end up looking after their partner who needs care. This can lead to exhaustion, burnout and health issues for themselves. See if you can help provide respite care or hire a caregiver to help.8. HOBBIESFinding a hobby or

interest is great for seniors. Encourage seniors to continue or pick up a hobby. This will promote mental stimulation, satisfaction, purpose and happiness. If the hobby requires groups or teams, this will also foster new friendships.9. SOCIALIZATIONWhether it’s family,

friends, acquaintances or new faces, try to get

seniors to attend events and get-togethers. Social stimulation will keep them mentally sharp, engaged and will prevent loneliness which could trigger a decline in health.10 HAPPIER AGINGFind that thing or

things a senior used to love to do that made him or her happy. Bringing up nostalgic memories and childhood activities are great examples. Whether it’s taking a senior to visit their family, having someone come as a companion once a week or assisting a senior to go for a walk outside, happiness can come in any form.

It’s been a mild winter so far in the Fraser Valley and while February is still to come, there are already signs of life out in the garden. If you are starting to

think about preparing your beds for the spring season, here are a few tips to make your flowers or vegetables grow and to create a sustainable garden.• Add mulch to flower

and plant beds. Many a gardener has gone to bed with a beautiful garden only to return in the ensuing days and see flower and plant beds littered with weeds. Mulch is perhaps best known for helping flower and plant beds retain moisture, but mulch also prevents the growth of weeds. Preventing weed growth means your water is going to the plants and flowers you intended it for and not to greedy and unsightly weeds.• Choose native plants.

A garden filled with

exotic plants and flowers may be stunning, but unless those plants are native to where you live, that beauty is coming at a steep price. When choosing plants for your garden, choose native plants that are fully capable of thriving in your local climate.• Plant with a plan.

When planting trees around your property, plant them in locations that can reduce your reliance on air conditioning in the warmer months. Plant a tree in a place where it will help to shade common areas inside

your home so such rooms are comfortable without the air conditioner cranking all day long.• Develop a compost

pile. Compost is made up of decayed organic material, and it can be used as a fertilizer. Gardeners can make their own compost piles at home, providing valuable minerals and nutrients for their lawns, without having to rely on store-bought amendments that need to be produced, packaged and transported before they can make it onto the shelves in your local lawn and garden center.

It’s never too early to garden

KINDNESSIn St. Paul’s inventory of the fruit of the spirit, in the fifth chapter of Galatians, we find kindness, the translation of the Greek word “chrestotes.” The Greek word “chrestotes” has the connotation of goodness, and not just goodness as a quality, but goodness as expressed in actions or deeds. The person who exemplifies this type of kindness will be a genuinely good person, expressing their goodness by acting in ways that are gentle, patient and self-controlled. The person who is kind in this sense will naturally put others at ease because they can be more relaxed, knowing that this person will be kind and gentle. We do well to remember that when St. Paul speaks of the “fruit of the spirit,” that fruit is singular, not plural. If we are truly walking by the spirit, we will possess all of these virtues. This surely does not mean that we won’t struggle, perhaps with some more than others, but rather that we should strive for the kind of overarching goodness or kindness that makes us a thoroughly good person. And, not just good in this or that respect, but good across the board. Of course, no one is perfect, but by striving to be kind and good in all of our dealings, both at work and at home, and with our friends as well as our adversaries, we will be well on our way to perfecting our character and becoming more godlike.

Put on then, as God’s Chosen ones, holy and beloved,

compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness and patience.

A community collaboration of those passionate about refugees in Mission attracted a crowd of 150 people last week at the Clarke Theatre.

Focus for the night was refugee readiness and the forum was facilitated by David Gouthro of The Consulting Edge.

“The forum created a deeper and common understanding of what is involved in welcoming refugees into the community,” said Rick Rake, from the Mission Community Services Society (MCSS) which organized the event.

“This is a first in a series of community meet-ings to help Mission be a welcoming community to refugees, the next one to be in a World-Café style,” he added.

Featured speakers for the night were Jennifer Mpungu from Mennonite Central Committee, Saba Alam from MCSS, and Pastor Dan Rempel from Cedar Valley Mennonite Church.

Rempel’s church is responsible for spearhead-ing the process among a number of Mission faith groups to sponsor a 14-member Congolese family expected to arrive in the community next month.

The role Mission will play in accepting Syrian refugees is still to be decided.

Mission Mayor Randy Hawes, who opened the event, said he was pleased with the community’s willingness to get involved.

HANSONGwen (nee Ross)

May 25, 1926 - January 17, 2016

Gwen passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 17, 2016 with her daughter Joanne (Robertson) at her side. Gwen will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her children, grandchildren, extended family members, and longtime friends from Mission BC. She is predeceased by her loving husband Art Hanson (1927-2000). Gwen was born on May 25th 1926 and grew up in New Westminster,BC where she met and married Art. They moved to Mission in the 1950s where Art began his career as a high school teacher and Gwen worked as an elementary school secretary. Both Gwen and Art were socially active members of the community in Mission, participating in the Kinsmen Club, enjoying square dancing and bridge, and entertaining friends and family at their summer trailer in Birch Bay, WA. Gwen worshipped every Sunday at All Saints Church and was a dedicated member of the Anglican Church Women’s group for many years. In 2012, Gwen moved from Mission to West Vancouver where she was well taken care of by the dedicated and loving staff at the Capilano Care Centre.

A funeral service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church (33077 2nd Ave., Mission, BC) on Saturday,

February 6th at 11:00 a.m. The service will be followed by a tea and lunch reception at 12:00 noon.

In lieu of fl owers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia or to All Saints Anglican Church.

LAWRobert (Bob)

January 8, 1938 ~ January 20, 2016

It is with fond memories and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our Husband, Father, Grandpa and friend, at age 78. Bob will be dearly missed by his wife Patricia, married for 50 years, his daughters, Carolynne and Allison, his son David, his granddaughter Lola and sister Barbara, as well many relatives and friendsacross the country.

Dad enjoyed story telling, travelling, golf-ing and telling jokes that he found funnier than the people listening. There will be a celebration of his life to be announced in the spring. Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC.

Leona MacAlpine’s Celebration of Life
