DECEMBER 11, 2016 - 3 - THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT In Phoenix, Arizona, a 26 year-old mother

stared down at her 6 year-old son, who was dying of terminal leukemia. Although her heart was filled with sadness, she also had a strong

feeling of determination. Like any parent, she wanted her son to grow up and fulfill all his dreams. Now, that was no

longer possible. The leukemia would see to that. But she still wanted her son's dream to come true.

She took her son's hand and asked, 'Billy, did you ever think about what you wanted to be once you grew up? Did you ever dream and wish what you would do with your life?'

Mommy, 'I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up.'

Mom smiled back and said, 'Let's see if we can make your wish come true.'

Later that day she went to her local fire Department in Phoenix, Arizona, where she met Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as Phoenix! She explained her son's final wish and asked if it might be possible to give her 6 year-old son a ride around the block on a fire engine.

Fireman Bob said, 'Look, we can do better than that. If you'll have your son ready at seven o'clock Wednesday morning, we'll make him an honorary Fireman for the whole day. He can come down to the fire station, eat with us, go out on all the fire calls, the whole nine yards!

And if you'll give us his sizes, we'll get a real fire uniform for him, with a real fire hat - not a toy -- one-with the emblem of the Phoenix Fire Department on it, a yellow slicker like we wear and rubber boots. 'They're all manufactured right here in Phoenix, so we can get them fast.'

Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Billy, dressed him in his uniform and escorted him from his hospital bed to the waiting hook and ladder truck.

Billy got to sit on the back of the truck and help steer it back My deepest thanks to all parishioners of St. Timothy parish for all you do to increase charity and to take on sacrifice.

Fr. Ed

to the fire station. He was in heaven. There were three fire calls in Phoenix that day and Billy got to go out on all three calls. He rode in the different fire engines, the Paramedic's' van, and even the fire chief's car. He was also videotaped for the local news program. Having his dream come true, with all the love and attention that was lavished upon him, so deeply touched Billy, that he lived three months longer than any doctor thought possible.

One night all of his vital signs began to drop dramatically and the head nurse, who believed in the hospice concept - that no one should die alone - began to call the family members to the hospital. Then she remembered the day Billy had spent as a Fireman, so she called the Fire Chief and asked if it would be possible to send a fireman in uniform to the hospital to be with Billy as he made his transition.

The chief replied, 'We can do better than that. We'll be there in five minutes. Will you please do me a favor? When you hear the sirens screaming and see the lights flashing, will you announce over the PA system that there is not a fire?' 'It's the department coming to see one of its finest members one more time. And will you open the window to his room?'

About five minutes later a hook and ladder truck arrived at the hospital and extended its ladder up to Billy's third floor open window. Sixteen (16) fire-fighters climbed up the ladder into Billy's room. With his mother's permission, they hugged him and held him and told him how much they LOVED him.

With his dying breath, Billy looked up at the fire chief and said, 'Chief, am I really a fireman now?'

'Billy, you are, and the Head Chief, Jesus, is holding your hand,' the chief said.

With those words, Billy smiled and said, 'I know, He's been holding my hand all day, and the angels have been singing.' He closed his eyes one last time.

AM I A FIREMAN NOW?

GIFTS FOR H.O.M.E.

Imagine, if you will, a young teenage girl discovering that she is pregnant, she knows her mother, who is rarely around, will throw her out and her boyfriend, who she thought loved her, doesn't even talk to her since she told him of her pregnancy. How terribly alone and

afraid this girl must be. Where will she go, who in this world would care what happens to her? These are typical challenges in the lives of the girls who reside at H.O.M.E., where they have found people who truly care about them and are ready to offer the help they need. The Respect Life Ministry is asking for "Walmart" gift cards for the girls and their babies who live at HOME. This will provide them with funds to purchase Christmas gifts for their children. PLEASE - can you help? Contact Barbara Stewart at 753-6376. Thank you so very much.

We know this is a “huge” gift… but…

"This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you. Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he." - Mt 11:10-11

TRINITY CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL SEEKS TEMPORARY MATH TEACHER

Trinity Catholic High School, a college preparatory high school in the Diocese of Orlando located in Ocala, Florida, has a teaching opportunity in the following area(s):

Math Temporary Teacher

Start date: January 2017

Length: 8 weeks

Must have experience in high-level math, A.P. Calculus AB and Pre-Calculus Honors

Trinity Catholic is looking for dynamic individuals who can further the school in its mission, as well as use a variety of instructional techniques in their classrooms, to provide students with the very best experience. The successful candidate should also aspire to join a faith-filled community of educators who work in service to their students.

Candidates should be certified, or be eligible to become certified by the State of Florida, in the area in which they teach. Qualified candidates should send a letter of introduction and a resume to school principal Lou Pereira at [email protected] .

WHY SHOULD CATHOLICS PARTICIPATE IN AN INTERFAITH PEACE PRAYER SERVICE? As you well know, our world is fraught with violence, not only abroad but right here in our country. This became all too clear with the shootings in Orlando. In response to these ongoing acts of violence, the

parishioners from St. Timothy Catholic Church gathered to pray for peace a year ago November. After an overwhelming response, many parishioners asked why we were not including other parishes, other Christians and other people of faith in this type of prayer gathering. To that end, we invited our brothers and sisters from neighboring parishes, other Christian churches, as well as the Jewish, Baha’i and Muslim faithful in the area. On April 12, St. Timothy parish held an Interfaith Peace Prayer Service that elicited a tremendous sense of solidarity and common cause among the over 250 people who attended. Each faith group contributed readings, prayers and sermons on the topic of peace. Each tradition was valued and respected for its particular beliefs but our common desire for peace and security for ourselves and our country provided a sense of unity. The Muslim Imam (the equivalent to a pastor) stated the following in his sermon: “The terrorists are not Muslims, they are murderers!” Similar sentiments were expressed by all, speaking a loud message that called for unity, cooperation and solidarity in our efforts to live and work peacefully to confront the problems in our world. The immediate response was: “When will we do this again so I can invite others?” If you have not already been invited by a friend or neighbor, please consider this your invitation to join in this beautiful effort to lock arms as we call upon God to lead us in our efforts for peace. The next Interfaith Peace Prayer Service will be held on Wednesday, January 18 from 6:30-7:30 PM at St. Timothy Parish.

The service will include song, prayer, ritual and an opportunity to listen to and share concerns and experiences. All are welcome. For more information, contact David at [email protected], or 753-0989.

THE “O” ANTIPHONS OF ADVENT SEASON - O COME EMMANUEL, COME -

By the ninth century the church at Rome, as well as throughout Charle-magne’s dominion, adopted a series of seven special antiphons to accompa-ny the singing of the Magnificat during Vespers (evening prayers in the final week before Christmas). This was called the “Great O Antiphons,” because each begins with the acclamation “O”. These verses both signal the shift in the focus of the theme of Advent on December 17 and function additionally as a countdown to the Feast of the Lord’s Nativity. The structure and content of the Antiphons continue to proclaim the fundamental truth we celebrate throughout the Advent-Christmas season. The Great O Antiphons are poetic meditations which characterize the life that God has given us through the life, death and resurrection of the Messiah. They share in a common pattern which begins with the cry, “O”, addressing the Messiah according to a specific Biblical title, and then they recount the salvific will and action of God that each title recalls.

Beginning Saturday, December 17 through Saturday, December 24, at the 8:30 AM Mass, a reader will proclaim the day’s O antiphon and a member of the parish will carry a candle to a specific window in the Church, which signifies specific Antiphon of the day. On Saturday, December 19, the O antiphon will be read at the 4:00 PM Mass only. On Sunday, December 18,, the O Antiphon will be read at the 9:00 AM Mass only. The O antiphons will continue until Saturday, December 24 at 8:30 AM Mass when the Savior will once again be born in our hearts and souls.

At each presentation, the Christ of God will be acclaimed: Lord of Israel, Flower of Jesse’s Stem, Key of David, Radiant Dawn, King of All Nations, Keystone of the church and finally, Emmanuel. Each title from death’s captiv-ity, reveals justice for the oppressed, gives true joy and peace to every human heart and promises freedom from sin to every creature He has created. Each also makes reference to a prophecy of Isaiah which pointed to the coming of the Messiah. For all these reasons, the O Antiphons make for a wonderful way to prepare ourselves for the Feast of the Lord’s Nativity. Our Pastor, Fr. Ed, invites all of our parish members to join in this wonderful tradition.
