A few hours in the morning of 4 days to study and learn with other Gloria de Cristo friends as the leader guides you through the book of Jonah. You need not bring anything except your willingness to learn. And as at all good Lutheran gath-erings, there will be coffee, snacks, etc. and it is all FREE. Attendance is limited. Watch for the sign-up slip in the bulletin or call the church office. January 26, 2020 – Annual Meeting of the Congregation of Gloria de Cristo. The Gloria de Cristo Council consists of eleven people that have accepted the call to serve as Ministry Team Leaders. Several of these leaders stand for election this year. In addition to the election of officers and council, reports of past activities, proposals for the future ministries, membership / attendance statistics, financial reports and a proposed budget will be on the agenda. This is your organization. This is your church family. You are an important part of this congregation and your attendance at this meeting is requested.

“We Are Church Together”

A new Rodgers 589 Organ was especially chosen and delivered for the require-ments of our sanctuary and music requirements at the cost of $72,500. $72,500 is the goal that is ours to meet to pay for the organ! Great news! Someone has already put up a challenge gift of $20,000. If we can meet that $20,000 goal very soon, there is a great possibility that others will fol-low. Double your organ gift!!! Enclosed is a special organ fund envelope for your convenience! Bill Timm, Pastor

E P I P H A N Y the 6th of January each year, also known as the 12th day of Christmas, is the official end to the festive season of Christmas. The ancient church used this day to celebrate the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist as well as the visit from the three Wise Men. (Some areas of the world known as Three Kings Day). In giving some perspective of time, the Kings visit to the now toddler Jesus was in fact a couple of years after his birth, however the story is usually folded into the Christmas narrative on Christmas Eve Carol Ser-vices. Epiphany is a day that we, as Christians, celebrate The Revelation (or Theophany) of God incarnate as Jesus Christ, thus Jesus’ being revealed as our true God to the Gentiles and all the world. This season will last until The Transfiguration on Febru-ary 23, leading us into Lent on Wednesday the 26th with Ash Wednesday. These themes of light, baptism and revelation are seen through many of our hymns for this season: ELW 301 Bright and Glorious Is the Sky ELW 302 As with Gladness Men of Old ELW 303 Brightest and Best of the Stars of the Morning ELW 304 Christ, When for Us You Were Baptized ELW 305 When Jesus Came to Jordan ELW 307 Light Shone in Darkness Sometime look in our (Red) hymnal before the service starts and just read the texts for some of the hymns listed for that service. Who knows, a whole new un-derstanding may emerge from the words about what this particular worship and season is trying to convey! It might enrich your worship experience.

This month, the council approved the purchase of a new Rodgers 589 organ to re-place our failed one for an amount of $72,500. In order to take advantage of an im-mediate opportunity and that the instrument is in place in time for Christmas cele-brations, and not having sufficient funds in our Checking Account to cover the cost, the decision was made to “borrow” money from the Savings Account for Dedicated Funds. Each of these decisions required Congregation approval, which we hope to receive retroactively at our Annual meeting in January. In the event these actions are not approved, we have pledges from interested members who will guarantee repayment of the funds to the Savings Account expeditiously.

Happy New Year: We hope all of you a blessed and wonderful new year. The Fellowship Committee is going to have a lot of new project starting in January. We will start our movie night again, Crafts start back up, and The Ladies Luncheon is coming up in March. So, let’s continue to have a good time together. We had a wonderful Christmas Bazaar with over 500 people coming and buying. The crafts sold very well, and the Goodies Walk was a great hit. Most buyers couldn't settle on one dozen. We made $2400, but most important, each person got a little taste of the Gloria de Cristo family. Thanks to all the Fellowship committee for the work and hour spent making it possible and Church members for making crafts and goodies. Watch the bulletin for dates and events coming to you soon.

God Bless, Lynette, Fellowship chairman

MISSIONS AND SOCIAL CONCERNS

How we, as the body of Christ, can address the concerns of human need and social problems within our congregation, community, and beyond

Mental Health Ministry

December was taken up almost entirely with our two Giving Trees. They were erected in the Narthex on the weekends of November 23 and 30. Blessedly, all our Angel tags (considerably fewer this year than previously) were taken the first week, and there was also a good response to the ELCA "Good Gifts" tree. On December 10, our group, which included M&SC plus a good number of new church mem-bers, organized the gift bags for our families. The wonderful party for the "Angels" was held on Saturday, December 14, in Fellowship Hall but sadly only a few families were able attend. They missed so much fun, including a surprise visit from Santa Claus who delivered Christmas stock-ings containing other goodies, as well as a good photo-op for pictures to be given to the parents in prison. Our Glorious Quilters, as usual, have done a tremendous job in providing age-appropriate quilts for each Angel as well as, new this year, a beautiful quilted stocking contain-ing other goodies. The table assigned for making and writing cards to their parent was well-attended, and we saw many lovely notes the Angels wrote. They were also entertained with a reading of the Christmas story and continuous playing of Christmas music. The gifts for those not attending were delivered personally. We were unable to sing carols at local care centers and homes of our congregation shut-ins this year. Hopefully next year we'll be able to revive this popular event. I trust you all enjoyed a blessed and peaceful Christmas season, and I wish you all a wonderful 2020.

OUTREACH / YOUTH & FAMILY

“ Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous…”-Joshua 1:9 The church is built on a rock but it is living and flowing like a fountain and changes are bound to happen. With new volunteers, come new ideas. We need to embrace the new people that we are blessed with and listen to their ideas, maybe even try one or two. Lets have the cour-age to do that as we enter 2020. Thanks so much to our volunteers who worked at the Yuma Sun Welcome Back Winter Visitor Bash at the Yuma Civic Center. Hundred of flyers were handed out with Christmas worship, Christmas Bazaar and Yard sale info as well as GDC brochures. Thank you , Cal Bakke, for building the banner display! We are in the middle of planning Adult Vacation Bible School January 14-17 (Tues-Friday) from 9:00- 11:30. Cyndy Warnier will deliver an inspired series of lessons, “ Jonah- It Would be a Whale of a Tale if it Wasn’t True!” Please sign up for this and enjoy a lesson, food, activities and music and its all FREE! You can register early in the office (space is limited). Watch for a sign up sheet in the bulletin as well. Michelle Cegon will head up January’s Adopt-a-Highway- January 11 so look for those an-nouncements soon and sign up! That will be followed, as always, with breakfast at Daybreak-ers. Doreen Caldwell will be getting some new sandwich signs so people know GDC is working on that project. Nina Erikkson has been selling and distributing Polos and doing a bang up job! We will do an-other order in mid to late January if you missed it this time. Our Youth Christmas Party was well attended. Thanks to parents and our teachers who make our children’s Christian education a priority. ----Julie Villones

WELCA AT GLORIA DE CRISTO LUTHERAN CHURCH

WORSHIP, MUSIC & ARTS

Happy Holidays! What a wonderful time of year. The decorating committee got together and did a wonderful job preparing the church for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. And personally I am look-ing forward to the 21st of December, when we will be able to sing to the new organ. On the 11th of December, the Worship, Music and Art Committee, had their monthly meet-ing. I would like to thank Char, for all of her hard work in putting a schedule together for the Ushers, Greeters, Readers and Altar Committee. There are still some holes in the schedules, so if you are able to assist with any of the vacant areas, please contact Char, or myself. Also, once again, we would like to extend the opportunity for men and women to help out in any area of the committee. The work is not hard but the rewards are plentiful!! In closing, I would like to wish everyone a blessed holiday season. Brenda

This New Year will launch many projects for WELCA at Gloria de Cristo. First will be the oppor-tunity to assist with greeting and guiding the attendees and managing the raffle for the Adult Vacation Bible School. Due to all the January events at Gloria de Cristo, the WELCA Board chose to combine the January and March rallies into one rally at the end of February. Tentative date for the rally is Feb 24th and will feature a speaker from Amberly Place. Amberly Place con-tinues its important role in our community and WELCA would like to continue to support it. Two other events are fast coming up; that is the WELCA Triennial of 2020 which will be held in Phoenix beginning July 5, 2020. The second vital event is the Youth Triennial of 2021 sched-uled for June in Minneapolis. For each event Gloria de Cristo will be well represented. WELCA will continue to place the “change” jar in the church Narthex. You’ll see it there with a label designating donations for the Youth Triennial. As many of you know, the registrations for these events can be expensive. WELCA of GDC would like to support the attendance of one or two GDC members to the Phoenix. The support would be full or partial payment of the registration. The only two requirements would be that the applicant be a member or and associate member and would never have attended a WELCA Triennial. Board members would accept a written request from anyone satisfying those two stipulations before March 31st. Board members are Donna Brown, Mary Zieman, JoAnn Conrath and Linda Bryant.

Wishing You the Best of New Years, Donna Brown

From Jan 2000 to 2020 “Now Thank We All Our God” In 2000 when our new church was dedicated the worshippers left the sanctuary sing-ing “Now we Thank We All Our God with Hearts and Hands and Voices.” In the pre-sent day, we all should be entering the sanctuary to that hymn. Lutherans do love to sing. First, Our Hearts: we have been a tremendously “giving” congregation- beginning with the building fund conducted at Otondo which enabled us to purchase land for the church campus. Pastor Tom Dudley of the ELCA conducted our next building fund- Kairos, a Greek word meaning “Giving.” From April 1,2002 until March 28,2005 re-sulting in pledges totaling $354,016. This plus other smaller donations, our Sunday offerings, loans, etc…enabled us to burn our $1,200,000 plus mortgage on Jan 5, 2009. Praise the Lord! Our Giving has also helped build the Columbarium. The site was originally designed to be a prayer garden, but a parishioner raised the idea of using the space for a col-umbarium. He personally worked very hard for this and it was dedicated, and a me-morial service held for his wife in Dec 2003. The fountain which was a gift given to us by Pastor Rod as a memorial to his wife. Phyllis was moved from the courtyard to its current spot, a much better location because it had ceased to work properly due to the swirling winds in the courtyard spraying water all around. The columbarium has recently been furnished with pavers, seating and some greenery making it a more inviting space for solitude and prayer.

The “Bells of Glory” were given by retired Pastor Palmer and Beverly Gedde along with a few memorial gifts and began ringing in 2008. The chimes were given to us by a church in Colorado Springs and a parishioner worshipping here and there during the winter months. Other major fun drives were made for the addition to Fellowship Hall (how did we manage be-fore) and the electronic sign on 40th St. Always we respond to our nation’s disasters- fire, floods, tornadoes. We also support four Mission Congregations. Don’t think that’s not appreciat-ed! We were a mission once ourselves and received support from established churches. Now with our new organ, let us again respond. Our Hands: Our Glorious Quilters started in 2007, giving away close to 400 lap robes locally every year. Also, there is the Prison Ministry with the Angel Tree gifts and party. The ELCA Good Gifts; all our “collections”- can tabs, transparent pill bottles, magazines, trou-pons, personal cosmetic items, used eyeglasses, and soda cans. All of these things are distribut-ed by volunteers. This church could barely function without volunteers: ushers, greeters, read-ers, altar guild, fellowship, both serving and providing goodies, choir bell and chime ringers, our property care givers; So many places for all of us to help. The banners adorning our church are handmade by a group of 5 ladies. Tremendously popular places for our hands are the Annual Garage and Bake Sale held in January the Queen’s Tea held in February or March and The Christmas Bazaar which features our “crafters” with their beading, needlework, woodworking and baking. Our voices: First our Pastor Timm celebrating his 16th year with us, always reaching out to us and our visitors. We’ve had 5 pastors previously called and 3 interim pastors. Our Worship and Arts Coordinator Jerry Grill so wonderfully leads our choir and is supported by Shirley Ehler and her helpers and more than 20 of our voices. There are soloists and instrumentalists among us who we hear occasionally. Then there are so many Bible Studies offered where we can be heard and learn. Our newest ministry is Mental Health and we are a Christ Care and Stephen Ministry congregation. The Women of the ELCA has been in existence since 1995 and nationally since the church merger in 1988 and now a new Men’s Full Contact Fellowship. Worship and the Arts also uses our voices in the wonderful drama and dinner theater presented in February, co-ordinates our Lenten Services with beautiful presentations and begins our church year with glo-rious, meaningful Christmas music and worship. Our newest Staff Member Julie Villones is the Youth and Family Coordinator bringing new life in that field. Finally, we lend our voices to our annual congregational meeting held the last Sunday in Janu-ary where our church council is selected, and our concerns voiced. Lastly, as you leave our church there is a sign above the entrance which reads, “You are now entering the mission field. As you read it, pray the prayer you read every Sunday. “Lord, help us your believers become disciples who love unconditionally; listen compassionately; speak truthfully; act justly; endure patiently; forgive mercifully; give generously, serve selflessly; invite constantly; pray fervently; witness unashamedly; and live worthily.
